Qualities of a great establishment: family owned and operated, Sun-faded pictures of family around the restaurant, hand painted menu sign, a constant stream of locals and regulars- walking and driving up- to the place, empty trays on the display 2 hours before close, signs limiting the amount of cookie orders, a chef willing to talk to you about how "you gonna love the crust" and Sovrana has them all! Will definitely be returning just to stop in and say hey! And to at least learn their names. The Sovrana family was so warm and inviting, just like the enchanting aroma of the pizza! I'm no pizza connoisseur, but of the places I have been to in Albany, they were the busiest. Ordered the almost everything pizza from here and it came warm, on time, with plates and a big stack of napkins. This was probably the best pizza I've had in the capital region (not that I get pizza often) in that they were generous with toppings and ingredients were really fresh. The crust is not the bubbly slightly crispy/chewy crust that I like most, but this was still a very good local pizza for the price and speed. My boyfriend also got Buffalo wings which he said were kind of dry and not so good, but I didn't try them and would never have ordered them so not factoring them into my review as much. read more

I must politely disagree with whatever authority dubbed this Albany's best pizza. My veggie combo slice was huge, and an excellent value at $4, but the toppings sat on a bland puffy crust like you'd expect at a chain takeout place. I had actually come for a sub, but hey, can't pass up a chance to try Albany's best pizza. My Italian Mix was A-OK. Good roll, generous in size for $6 (plus $1 for hot pepper spread) but the meat/veggie mix balance was off and the meat components were uninteresting in flavor. They asked me if I wanted Italian dressing and I said yes, but they use the Wishbone stuff from a bottle rather than the oil/vinegar/oregano mix you expect. I'm a fan, but not so much for the pizza, but for two other very important things: - the cannoli (or cannolis for those not familiar with cannolo for one and cannoli for multiple) - the vibe The cannoli are freshly made and filled to order which means the shell doesn't get soggy from the filling. That filling; SO smooth, SO well-balanced between tangy and sweet. I haven't found a cannolo in the Capital Region I've liked better. Be prepared for them to be sold out by around lunch time, but they'll usually make a second batch after the lunch hour rush. The vibe. Clearly this place has been around for a long time and the locals know it and love it. The owners are wonderful to interact with and everyone is welcomed. I love walking into places like this. Cash only, but there is an ATM. I like my pizza thinner and crispier than Sovrana does theirs, but in a pinch, and for $2 a slice, it's a passable lunch. I won't lie, I'm a bit judgey when it comes to pizza places claiming to be "authentic", or the "best" pizza in the Capital District. Sovrana definitely should be ranked among the best locally though, and is about as authentic as it gets. The shop is small, and unassuming. They obviously care more about the product they are cooking up, rather than showcasing the latest restaurant decor, but when you're ordering pizza for takeout, that should be a good thing! Called ahead for a white broccoli pizza, and a sauce on top pie to have on a Friday during lent, and they took maybe 15 minutes. When I arrived to pick them up, I was shocked that my total was less than $20. The pizzas were also steaming hot, literally...there was steam pouring out every crevice of the box. The pizzas were both delicious, perfectly crisp and charred crust, ample toppings, tasty sauce. I will say the "cob" pizza was rather messy, but it was well worth it. I was super excited about this place from the second I walked in, it smelled so good! I was not disappointed! I got an eggplant parm sandwich and antipasto salad. I was very impressed with the quality of both. Better than any other Italian sub/salad I've had in the albany area, and for a reasonable price too! My meal could easily feed two people for just $13. When I saw good quality spinach and lettuce under the layers of cold cuts on my antipasto salad, I was sold! Most places give you iceberg lettuce, but this is the real deal. They also included a fresh warm bread roll. I will definitely start coming here for my Italian take-out needs. I'm really sad I didn't discover it sooner. A few friends and I decided to do a large pizza and mozzarella sticks to go. It's a traditional, thick crust pizza with gooey mozzarella cheese. The mozzarella sticks were beyond amazing, not quite sure what it is whether breading or the way they fry the sticks but it comes to the perfect crisp. Best Gluten-Free Pizza in America This was seriously amazing GF pizza. My son has celiac so finding a safe place to eat is already a challenge, but to find a pizza place with a separate area/oven, with an owner that really understands cross-contamination, and has dare-I-say perfected pizza dough is unbelievable. The creamy middle, naturally. The second best part of an eclair is the chocolate topping. The pastry shell just kind of holds it all together. It's a pastry cream and chocolate delivery device. Well, "Death in a cup" simply gets rid of the middle man. Yep. It's the eclair pastry cream, in a cup, topped with chocolate. You eat it with a spoon. As someone with Celiac disease, finding a GOOD pizza that is safe for me to eat can be a challenge. My daughter and I were looking for gluten-free places that I could eat in the capital region, because I was getting bored of the same old places that I had always gone. When we saw that Sovrana Had gluten-free pizza, we decided to get a shot. It's a little tiny pizza shop with a couple of tables and in Italian couple who runs it. My daughter and I both ordered calzones and it was a humongous calzone for $4.50. (How can they even afford to stay in business with such amazing calzones sold at such a price?) It was the best darn gluten-free calzone that I've ever had. In fact it was one of the best calzones that I've ever had period. We've been back about two times since our first visit And are planning to introduce it to my other daughter who is also gluten-free. It's not a sit down restaurant, it's just a pizza shop with a couple of tables so don't bring a large group, order takeout if you need to seat more than four people. It may seem strange to give a rating of 1 to a pizza place and then say they've improved, but that's my experience. I'm basing my ratings mainly on pizza slices. The first 2 times I went was in the 2010s and I had to ask for the slices to be heated TWICE both times I went, and they still weren't hot. The crust was leathery and burnt on the edge but nearly uncooked under the toppings and was too thick. The veggies were burnt on the top edges but uncooked on the bottom. My meat order was sausage and there were only 3 or 4 very small pieces on each slice. The most recent time I went at least the vegetables were cooked and there didn't seem to be any uncooked parts of the crust, but it was still leathery on the bottom and too thick and gummy under the toppings. Also, there was still only a few small pieces of sausage. I asked for it to be heated, but It still wasn't hot enough. I was in a hurry and just left. I should mention that one of the prior times I went I also ordered an Italian mixed sub with oil and vinegar. When I went to eat it the only meat was ham and salami and there was no oil and vinegar or peppers. read more

The prices were extremely reasonable, they were quite personable, and they went above and beyond to accommodate my several-pizza order. Delivery was wonderfully prompt at 5 minutes prior to the scheduled time, and I received a call from the driver who wanted to make sure the pizza made it to the right person at the shelter.
