I decided to take my wife here after it came up on Foursquare. We were not disappointed. My wife's meal (The Highlander) was delicious as was mine (omelet with Gouda, bacon, & kale). The service was prompt and friendly. I would definitely highly recommend! read more

Love love love. This cafe is exactly what the walnut street community needed! Great food, AMAZING coffee, really sweet and attentive staff. In the summer, the outdoor seating area is like a secret garden- an oasis away from the Walnut street bustle. read more

I was here last night and I am so extremely annoyed. I've been here once before and it was alright so yesterday I thought I would give it a try...never again. It's sad that I won't be back because what I ate there was actually delicious. My friend and I wanted to sit outside, the weather was beautiful and it was quiet because we were the only ones. But not for long. 3 girls come marching in with a wine bottle and spend the entire night talking very loudly about the most shallow things. Now I know that's not the restaurants problem if their guests are annoying, but it turns out one of those girls works at Red Eye Cafe because she was the one who ran our food. The gentleman helping us was nice. This woman brings out our food and just stands at the end of our table for a sufficiently awkward amount of time. I didn't know if she was waiting for us to grab the food from her or what. Normally the server is supposed to ask who got what or at least say the name of the dish out loud so the guests can claim it. I said to myself whatever, at least shes not our server. She then starts putting plates down and says "I'll bring over another table" before shoving the plates and dropping two full glasses of water all over me and my purse. While I'm not proud of the fact that my purse is real leather, I'm pretty sure it's ruined. Afterwards, she doesn't even apologize!!!!!!!! She says "Well that's why I wanted to bring over another table." ????????? She goes inside and comes back out with a towel that she puts in my face. After that, she goes inside and she doesn't come back out to see her friends. After we finish eating, we go inside to pay. The guy at the counter asks us how everything was, I said it was good, not wanting to mention anything. Then I tell him, "Actually, that lady over there brought us out our food and dropped two full glasses of water all over me and didn't apologize to me or anything." The guy then says "ohhh" and sucks his teeth as if to say "well that sucks" Again, apparently no one at this cafe knows the first thing about customer service. I was tipping my server over 20% but I regretted it after I found out the tips are pooled. I've been working in the restaurant industry for years, and I always give my servers the benefit of the doubt. But this woman was so loud with her friends but when she comes over to our table she's dry and rude. On top of that, apparently letting someone else know what happened won't help you. I'm very upset about my purse as I've had it for years, but I might be more upset that although I really enjoyed the food, I will not be returning. And neither will my friend. read more

This place has a cool vibe. It's small and always busy so be prepared to wait a while. The food is great especially juevos rancheros for brunch when they have it. The dirty chai is awesome! Whenever I'm in the neighborhood I stop to get one. Def 5 stars in my book! Enjoy read more

Awesome, cozy breaskfast or lunch spot!!Lattes rocks, dishes are freshly prepared!!Yummy hiddend gem

Everything was delicious!! This place is a small space that can only hold a small amount of people but the food is worth the wait. We went for breakfast and I had the banana walnut pancakes which were delicious, but they are thick and filling. I would suggest ordering them to share with someone else. I also had a mocha latte which was soooo tasty. On our way out we purchase one of the toffee, dark chocolate and walnut cookies. It sounds like a lot for one cookie, but was just the right about of yummy goodness in one cookie. read more

Shut up and eat here. Don't be stupid. Stop what you're doing, get in your car, come to this place and eat whatever. I had the salmon my gf had the chicken. Both were amazing. Now stop reading reviews, this is the place to be. read more

Excellent food, amazing coffee, exceptional service. What more would anyone want. I have been here numerous times and I have enjoyed the food and atmosphere EVERY SINGLE TIME. Never disappoints. read more

I love this place. It's small so it can get crowded. Their coffee is amazing. My favorite is the iced sludge, a cold pressed spiced coffee. Brunch in the weekends is amazing. The blueberry pancakes are light and flavorful with lots of fresh blueberries in the batter. The maple bacon is also great. The slices are thicker than in many places and delicious. I love their soups (especially their black bean) and salads (the farmhouse is fresh and the dressing is light and flavorful). The grilled cheese is delicious. It is the grown up version of a childhood favorite made with cheddar cheese and an onion jam that is out of this world. Some of the breakfast sandwiches have a little too much bread for my taste. The staff is attentive and the service is top notch. The decor is fun and fresh. A favorite spot in Montclair read more

Second time at Red Eye and both times have been amazing! Dirty Chai was heaven my favorite is the Sunrise Quesadilla. We also love the French toast. If you're in the area, stop in. You won't be disappointed. read more

This place was a bit pricey, but that didn't stop me from trying one of their vegan brownies that was calling my name from inside the glass. I wasn't disappointed. I love the coffee and tea here as well, which are very smooth and flavorful. read more

Not a large place but very cozy and warm, especially if you like wood and subway tile. We came looking for a bunch brunch place and gave this place a shot. The greeting was warm and friendly we got there early enough so we didn't have to wait. The menu covered all the usual brunch things. I went for the corn beef hash with Red Eye Gravy. Not your typical hash. It was filled with chunks of meat rather than shredded beef. The gravy was thick and flavorful. read more

Been here a few times. The food is good and the menu usually has some interesting things on it. Coffee/ice cream/pastries/cookies at the front of the restaurant are also good. The decorations are also pretty cool. Really solid restaurant. read more

Been here once for breakfast. Had the omelet with chorizo and it was MY-T-Fine! Coffee was delish too, can't wait to try other items

Pretty good spot for coffee and they have an awesome chai drink with an espresso called the dirty chai. They are consistent and every time I'm in the area i opt for this over sbux. I've had their grilled cheese with sweet caramelized onion and its to die for - def worth a cheat day for that little sandwich. read more

Opposite one of my other favorites on Walnut Street is the Red eye cafe. A great place for breakfast and lunch! Great sandwiches and salads and plenty of baked goods in the morning. Coffee is better then average but no A. read more

Four stars because the service was a little off... But once we were noticed lol they kinda made up for it, the food was beyond amazing... The place is small but it was worth being so close to strangers lol you should go lol read more

had an espresso there - so its going to be a short review. its a great spot for a break while day drinking. The service was great - friendly barista that gave you a shot of conversation along with your shot of caffeine. They also had some good looking pastries to eat, but I did not partake. read more

Abysmal customer service. This place may have good food and coffee, but I will not be coming back here again. I was in the area looking for pastries for an event I'm hosting in the evening and I saw the rush outside, so I walk in. I see an apple pie for sale and I ask what I think is a simple question 'how much for the whole pie?' Literally, 10 people looked at me and all the workers started to snarl and respond 'uh we don't sell the whole pie it's the only one we have but you can go to Eerie bakery in EAST RUTHERFORD to go get one'. Blew my mind. You will a) be rude to a customer for asking a question (obnoxious hippie baristas) and b) send them to another city rather than making a sale. Rude. read more

Love this place!! Friendly staff, great environment. I really enjoy their coffee, love their Dirty Chai lattes. Awesome food, the specials are always interesting. Might be difficult to get a table because it's very small, but it's worth the wait. read more

Yummy Elvis. Bacon is orgasmic. Coffee is great. Chorizo frittata delish. Service was polite and friendly.

Great staff, coffee, and breakfast! Get the hash in the morning with a cup of joe!

Really good coffee, nice food. Portions are modest (but I could always stand to eat a little less!). Service was quick and no frills. Also thumbs up on the decor. I'll be back! read more

Got the French toast and it was cooked perfectly! Would definitely get that again if I go back. My husband got the waffle sandwich - waffles were a little soggy and he requested the egg to be cooked all the way since he doesn't eat runny eggs but they made it runny anyway. read more

Such a cool spot for dinner and coffee. The food was good and the atmosphere is chill.

Food is GREAT, FANTASTIC and DELICIOUS but service sucks. I am here once a week bc I love breakfast and lunch here but lately all the employees are rude. You can tell they don't want to be here. Also calling for items to go is horrible always quoted 10-15 minutes but once you get there you'll be waiting another 10-15 minutes! No manager ever or if there is I have no idea who they are. No compensation when things aren't right or when to go orders are extremely late. Management should be present and know how to fix unhappy customers. read more

Great food and coffee ! Definitely try the highlander and the corned beef hash ! Full of flavor and yummyness

Delicious coffee. Can't wait to try the food here! I had the iced coffee a couple times now and really enjoyed the flavor. I also like how the sweetener is a clear liquid that they pour into your drink. I can't wait to try the other types of coffees, lattes and espresso drinks! :) read more

Love the Red Eye Cafe. It is a small place and only reason for the 4 stars is the wait. Some patrons treat it like a Starbucks a.nd stay seated for a long time which makes eating patrons have to wait. Food is great and coffee is well above average. read more

Friendly service. Cook laid back atmosphere. Food was very good. I had the frittata

1st time visiting was fathers day and it wasn't bad. I believe I had the waffles or French toast and I enjoyed it along with the Brussel sprouts as an app. Today was my second .... although my pancakes were okay my potatoes And my BF hash and potatoes were a big thumbs down. Weird texture lacked flavor and even our lemonades were not good. Tried adding fresh lemon and water but didn't do the job. Only 3-4 parties here while we were dining today ... read more

This is a great place to grab a drink and some food. I've been there both for breakfast and for lunch. They have some interesting options, not just standard eggs and pancakes, but things with beets and kale. I also had some kind of crumble coffee cake that was amazing. I ordered some kind of an iced vanilla coffee and milk drink. It was fantastic. I was expecting it to be filled with sugar and overly sweet. Instead, it was subtely sweet, which let you actually taste the vanilla. I'd recommend that they add a few tea options, but that's more of a business decision. And the inside decor is nice. It looks like a subway terminal (but clean!). And there's a window so you can see into the kitchen (keeps them honest!). And there was probably 2 electrical outlets per table, if you like to plug in while drinking. read more

I went to the Red Eye Cafe with my friend's kids. The space is beautiful and tastefully decorated. I ordered the Red Eye (coffee with Espresso) and the kids ordered Hot Chocolate to compensate for a rainy day. The hostess was very thoughtful and prompt with our orders. My drink was phenomenal and generous for a small-sized beverage. It was exactly what I needed. They also have free wi-fi and a wide range of books. We had a nice, relaxing time. The only drawback is that there is limited parking available; but since it is right next to the Walnut St. Station and parking in Montclair is not the easiest anyway, it is not much of a deterrent. I will be eager to try their other offerings...especially their ice-cream and desserts!! read more

Good food, pastries, and coffee! The waiters/waitresses sucked though. If you're going on a weekend there is a wait time to be seated.

The food - Simple, tasty and clean ingredients. You get a lot for your buck in terms of the meal quality and taste is delicious! The ambiance is lively, clean, unpretentious and there's art on the wall for sale in support of local artist - cash only as it goes straight to the artist. My husband and I bought a piece and love dinning here. Dirty chai's are the bomb! read more

On a weekday night a friend of mine that was from out of town decide stop by for a late dinner. Using yelp we thought closing at 11 did not mean closing kitchen at 9:30. I wish they would let people PROPERLY know on their site or here when they'll close the kitchen so people aren't wasting time heading out there for no reason, on another note during that time they only serve tea or coffee. Great food or hot beverages cannot outweigh bad customer service (because the server was rude.) Better luck next never. read more

I ate here the other day for the first time. The sandwich was excellent and it was a great mix of salty and sweet. The restaurant was really crowded so there was a wait but it was well worth it. The service was attentive but they did not rush the meal. Their coffee is excellent and so are their homemade baked goods. Their brunch looks great so I plan to be back soon! read more

Usually love this place. But on my last visit I had a terrible experience with one of the servers and with a number of good choices in the area might re-consider ever sitting down for a coffee or lunch here again and only take coffee's on the go. Disappointing to have one really bad experience at a place I love going to read more

AWESOME SERVICE! Really friendly staff - very helpful and extremely considerate. Had a slightly large party, but they were very accommodating and helped make it an extremely pleasant experience. The omelette was very hardy and among the best I've ever had. Will definitely visit again when in town. read more

A friend (and former Montclairian) was in town visiting with her new baby so a few of us gals decided on Red Eye for Sunday morning brunch. Being new to the area myself, I'd never been. But let me say, it's left a lasting impression on me. It's a smaller place but was packed when we arrived. Luckily, we didn't have to wait to get a table for 4 (but maybe that's because I arrived a little later than everyone else! haha.. ). The menu had a good selection to choose from but not so much that I needed an hour to decide what I wanted. My House Omelette was delicious! The guy who brought us the bill was a little snarky but it was all in good fun. We all had a giggle and then were on our way. And now that I've read other reviews, I'll be back to try the Dirty Chai. read more
