I come to this beautiful establishment everyday for my iced coffee and the service is outstanding. Not only is there food menu exquisite but a very friendly and heart warming atmosphere. In addition to the astounding environment, there are lovely baristas that are exceptionally talented and care deeply about the coffee they produce. In particular, Lauren who always has an energetic and cheerful attitude. Lauren's barista skill set is immaculate, along with precision pouring technique. Excellent meal, Excellent service and OUTSTANDING Coffee! My co-worker and I stopped in on a quiet Friday morning for breakfast since we were in the area and I had heard good things about this place. It didn't disappoint. I had the pancakes with walnuts and bananas and a side of bacon and my co-worker had the green eggs and ham. My breakfast consisted of 3 medium size pancakes with the just right amount of bananas and walnuts on top. The bacon consisted of 3 long and thick strips cooked perfectly. Everything was very tasty. I'm a coffee snob so I know outstanding coffee when I have it. This coffee was tasty and strong. The size of the coffee cup was almost a soup bowl. It took a few extra minutes for the food to come out but you understand when you start eating it. I told my wife about my experience and she is now making plans to go even though we live about 35 mintues away. She is a coffee snob as well. The restaurant has a quaint, trendy, and charming feel to it. The service was excellent and friendly. I saw lots of people coming in for their coffee before heading to the train. Exceptional coffee! Some of the best in the area. The French Press is absolutely dynamite. The Sludge is the perfect summertime iced coffee drink. Their breakfast/brunch is good enough. It's pretty much elevated by their coffee. In fact if it weren't for that coffee there wouldn't be much special about it. My issue with Red Eye Cafe is when it gets crowded. When it's quiet, the staff is efficient and organized. However when it gets crowded, the staff seems to get overwhelmed--especially at the front take-out counter. Maybe they need a number system. Perhaps they favor the regulars. They just don't seem to take the crowd in order, making drinks and preparations in a random order rather than first come first serve. I've been skipped over/ignored on 2-3 visits to the point where I walked out coffee-less. It gets pretty frustrating. read more

This establishment was rather surprising. Most of the staff came from Brooklyn (at least that's what I over heard, unless I'm deaf) and if you've been down there lately it's mostly filled with hipsters and retro looking stores. It's actually pretty cool what they did inside and the food isn't bad either. Definitely a nice and relaxing environment. I would recommend a French Press coffee and a biscotti or two if you can wake up and get there by 10am on relaxing Sunday morning. read more

Slightly hipster, slightly bohemian Good place to meet up with some friends and have tasty breakfasts all day long or a small but tasty menu of well made unique entrees and thoughtful sandwiches. Overly ambitious dishes, poorly executed, over priced, very dissatisfied. You can do much better in Montclair. Had brunch at Red Eye and likely wont be going back. First of all had nothing to do with service. Everyone there is very nice and our waitress was a very nice young woman. The menu and the kitchen however failed greatly. Heres the simple assessment. The dishes are strange, way too ambitious; Scrambled eggs with kale, shallots, gruyere and ham or Scotch Egg Banh Mi Scotch Egg Banh Mi with cilantro, pickled carrots & daikon. Flavors just all the hell over the place. In and of its self this is not a sin but when your kitchen just doest give a damn about execution or when the ingredients are of basic quality. Crazy dishes like these accentuate the corner cutting they dont cover it up. I orderedthe scrambled eggs with kale and everything else. So sloppily thrown together it really was a shame. The cheese wasn't cooked completely. The Kale was way under cooked. The ham, partially cooked....the shallots and onion were cooked but only because they cook the quickest. This is a dish that requires layering the bits in order as they cook and this kitchen just threw it in the pan and served it up. Oh and by the way.....warm bread off a sprayed panini press isn't toasted bread. We felt the prices were 15% too expensive for what we got. The coffee was NOT good. This is actually my biggest critique. They had intelligentsia coffee which is a very good and only served at finer establishments. Some time ago Red Eye switched to a more local brand and the quality isnt even close. Lovely location, lovely decor just wish they had better focus on the true quality of the dishes. read more

My partner and I stopped in for brunch on a Sunday. The wait was about 30-40 minutes, which is pretty typical for weekend brunch. While waiting for our table, we ordered a vanilla chai and caramel latte with a peppermint bark biscotti; the drinks and biscotti were delicious. When we were seated, the waiters were courteous and attentive... intially. Both of us ordered the waffle sandwich, which was decent. The dipping sauce and bacon were pretty good. The coffee was ok. I give 3 stars for two reasons. First, the food was good but wasn't amazingly delicious. The prices were reasonable and the drinks were pleasing, but it wasn't outstanding. Secondly, I'd say the service at the conclusion of the meal left us feeling uncomfortable. There are games and books on the shelves throughout the restaurant. My partner and I began a game or chess prior to our meal arriving. When our food came, the waitress gladly offered to save our game and stored it for us. After we paid, my partner asked for the chess game back, so we could finish. The waiter (different from the initial waitress) stalled in bringing the game and then returned after an awkward pause. He asked if we could finish playing our game in the outdoor seating area...in December. He explained that there were other customers waiting to be seated. The discomfort lies in feeling rushed out of the establishment. Why provide games if once you've paid, you're not permitted to stay and enjoy the ambience? Would we have similarly been rushed if we were just talking? There were several other patrons that had arrived before us that were casually engaged in conversation and hadn't been asked to move or sit elsewhere. All in all, it left us feeling uncomfortable. So, if you want decent food at a reasonable price, maybe with some good drinks, check this place out. Just don't intend to linger too long or play with the games, otherwise you may also be subjected to the uncomfortable awkwardness we felt. And no, it wasn't a good suggestion to continue playing the game outside in 50 degree weather. read more

With my office just a block or so away, Red Eye is a likely place so I'm delighted at how good the food and service are and how well priced it is. I've been there many times for brunch or lunch but my most recent visit -- on Saturday -- was an eye opener! One of the specials was huevos rancheros and I'm a big fan of huevos rancheros and this was one of the best versions I've ever had. Very hardy and well seasoned! I was eating on the run so no photos. Ok. Here's the deal. This food, service and atmosphere has the potential for 5 stars. Ingredients - great and fresh. I found one piece of lettuce with some brown on it, but it wasn't anything to throw a tantrum about. I ordered the zucchini frittata but without the hot sauce, which comes on some crispy (but not too crispy) multi grain bread. I substituted the herbed mayo for the hot sauce. The first half of the sandwich had barely any mayo on it, rendering it close to tasteless (the frittata was as it should have been, a bit of a blank canvass to throw sauce and flavor on). The second half of the sandwich had about 3-4 good bites with enough mayo to really give some flavor and it was DELICIOUS. Unfortunately the rest of the sandwich did not have an equal distribution of mayo, resulting in a bland experience for the second time. The salad dressing was a nice lemon vinaigrette. It really came down to the basic technique of distributing the mayo evenly (and maybe putting a little more mayo on over all) that resulted in a less than ideal experience. I do not have a single doubt in my heart if given a second chance (I plan to) I will be able, in good conscience to bring my rating to a 5 star. read more

My 3 year old daughter walked in here, opened her arms and said "I love this place!" Its got a good energy. I have had many items. The latest was a VEGAN brownie and I just could NOT believe how incredible it was. There is a blueberry sandwich that is great! I haven't had anything I didn't like. I ordered the dirty chai (Delicious) it's a spicy chai with a shot of espresso, just what I need on a Sunday morning. For my main I ordered the French Toast- it was perfectly cooked very tasty and not eggy, the strawberry on top were fresh and that freshly home made cream on top was the perfect balance of sweetness and texture(not too runny and stayed fluffy even on top of the hot French toast) the syrup delicious. Cute and artsy, low key cafe. Went there for brunch, their good selection was plenty, service was quick and friendly. I ordered some fresh fruit and basic eggs, bacon and toast, no complaints! For local residents, this is a must try spot. I came here for breakfast and had a cup coffee, mozzarella / spinach omelet, and homemade potatoes. The food tasted fresh and the service size was perfect. The coffee was delicious and they offer a good amount of options. If I lived in the area I would definitely visit more often but there are lots of local cafe's in my area and Red Eye Cafe did not stand out as much to make repetitive 30 minute commutes. I can't knock Red Eye Cafe for how good the food and coffee tasted but the staff could be a tad bit more welcoming. Okay, for the food I would probably give red eye 4-5 stars, what brought it down was the coffee. Every time I have eat at red eye it's been great and inventive. But, I've had coffee here at least 5 times and this last time was the worst of all ( if I was rating coffee only, I would give it 1-2 stars) My husband and I went to red eye last month and got a French press and a latte. Pretty straight forward. Well, both were the worst we've ever tasted. We both really enjoy their dirty chai ( most of the time- it can sometimes be hit or miss depending on who is making it ) And I have had a latte there before that was decent, but it's never steamed very nicely or expertly. Maybe they focus on food more than their coffee program, but I was really hoping for a solid coffee place near me. Their Sludge iced coffee is usually on point so I would return for that! The 4 times or so I hAve had it, it was pretty consistent. Anyway so my late basically tasted watered down and the shot was not pulled very well. The French press tasted really sub par, something I would imagine folders to taste like. Neither of us could stomach finishing or drinks, sadly. The food is fresh and extremely delicious. I will say this, you can't come here and not get a Dirty Chai Latte. The atmosphere is wonderful. Better than a Starbucks trust me. We came here for brunch this past Saturday. The wait was about 40 minutes, but we left our name and number with the host in case and took a walk around the area to work up an appetite. Of note, Anthony was our server and took great care of us. We got the soup and sandwich combo (soup of the day was chicken and vegetables), a side of candied bacon, and the red eye hash. I got a dirty chai as well since it was recommended across numerous reviews. Soup and sandwich combo: 3/5. I wasn't a huge fan of the soup (I felt that there are a couple local diners we go to whose homemade soups have more flavor), but since I was coming off of a cold, it worked okay enough. The grilled cheese with onion jam was really good and hit the spot; I'm a huge sucker for grilled cheese in general but I thought the flavors worked well and it tasted good. Red eye hash: 5/5 from the hubby. Good sized chunks of flavorful meat, well seasoned potatoes, and he felt the gravy tied the dish together well. Dirty chai: 4/5. It was different, tasty, and did the trick for a coffee fiend like myself! I think worth trying if you're there and enjoy coffee-like beverages at all. Next time if we come back, I might just try the regular coffee Candied bacon: 5/5. If I come back, I would definitely order this again if nothing else. The Sweet Scramble breakfast sandwich with onion jam on an English muffin is terrific. The French toast breakfast is also great; bread has enough egg soaked in it (I hate French toast with dry innards), ripe berries, and real maple syrup (included!). I live The Red Eye - I feel as if I am sitting in Brooklyn in some great little coffee place that has the added attraction Of serving delicious food. Every time I go there I absolutely must have their cappuccino. Their barista makes it so delicious And creamy. I have brought many many friends there and they to enjoy it as I do. Their selections are really unique. I would like to see them shake up their menu with little bit and add some specials because after going there so many times I've experienced the entire menu. My wife and I had gone out to this café which was new to us and both times we've been there the experience was fantastic. A gentleman named Kyle waited on us the first time, and a gentleman named Peter waited on us the second time. Both waiters were excellent with their service and their ability to communicate. I've been here many times with my friends and family. Fabulous food, great location and friendly staff. They don't have much space so be prepared to wait 10-15 minutes for brunch. Parking is on the street like most of the Montclair food joints. Food is usually very fast, pretty much all items on the menu are delicious.
