Such a fun spot to stop by! We sat outside which is an adorable alley way and there's a huge interacting wall which asks you to write with chalk what you want to do before you die. Such a great idea! Loved reading other people's wants as well as a great conversation starter! The food was bomb as well! The service was good not bad or outstanding either. Can't really complain. Will for sure recommend to friends to check out in the area read more

I heard so much about their dirty chai so i went in to try. Definitely did not disappoint. It was indeed delicious. I thought the service was a little lackluster, a smile from the front would have gone a long way! I ordered the fried eggs and hash but it was 90% hash! I basically ate the potatoes and the two eggs and left the rest. Maybe they should try adding some greens to this dish and reduce the hash serving. Would be much better. Otherwise good spot to get coffee. read more

Despite past positive experiences with the food quality, Red Eye leaves a lot to be desired in terms of service. After a 4-hour drive home from DC my wife and I were looking forward to a nice lunch. Unfortunately, we were gravely disappointed after an hour of waiting for only two sandwiches--yes, sandwiches, the least complicated cuisine imaginable. All this while helplessly watching others seated after us receive their food before us. Our waitress attempted to mend a relationship that would have been better addressed in person by a manager or owner, given the small size of the business. Telling us that you only have two chefs and that it's busy does nothing to explain how others sat after us were served before us, or why 2 sandwiches should take an hour to make. After addressing the waitress about the situation, she assured us it would be 10 minutes, and then 10 more minutes before we ultimately decided to leave without eating. Sadly, we weren't even offered a complimentary item or service. After a few years of being in love with place, we've decided to not return again. So long. read more

Obsessed is an understatement. We found this place on doordash and now we just can't stop ordering it. Can't wait to actually go in for a visit once this pandemic is over! The Pesto Broccoli Scramble sandwich is my absolute favorite. The Highlander is awesome as well! My boyfriend loves the Huevos Rancheros -- it really is tasty from what I've sampled! Also, a meal here isn't complete without some of their coffee and an iced chai. Don't wait, run -- your tastebuds will thank you! read more

Dirty chai latte is my favorite drink from this cafe!! The omelettes are also delicious and so is the root hash. I'm pretty particular with my food so I usually stick the same thing which are the root hash. The prices are decent not too pricey considering you're in Montclair. They also offer gluten free treats. read more

Haven't been in for a little while, so it was a good opportunity to bring my sister who was here out of town. Monday lunch crowd was light, we got a table instantly. I tried the home brewed Kombucha and it was delightful, a bit stronger than the one I get from whole foods. I also had the Havest salad and it was light and filling because of the squash. The goat cheese was perfect, enough and not overbearing. My sister and mother enjoyed their omelets and we had a good time. We'll be back! read more

It was a cute little spot. Took my boyfriend to celebrate a month-aversary, we take those seriously so we usually Yelp find where we are going in advanced. It was pretty much better than I expected, it was busy so the wait was a bit long but it was so worth it! The food was delicious AND healthy, even my boyfriend liked it and that was my way of tricking him into eating healthy lol We are definitely going back! read more

One of the few times I've given 5 stars. Every single one is deserved. The pastrami smoked salmon sandwich was one of the best breakfast sandwich I've had. No exaggeration. I'm not a huge fan of bread sometimes because it can be thick, dry, and drown the other ingredients. The pumpernickel bread (was soft and light. It and the lemon cream cheese balanced perfectly with the smoked salmon (which is not mixed with pastrami, but rather has an herb crust like salami). Being that I'm on the search for the great corned beef hash, I treated myself to Red Eye's contestant. Another winner. Their potatoes were perfectly seasoned, soft, with a pan crisped outside. The corned beef (cubed, not canned) was tender and flavorful. My mate had a turkey sandwich... I think. I wasn't even curious about his food this time. WILL be back. DO recommend. Currently drooling at the thought of their food.... this might be a problem. read more

UPDATED REVIEW: I've now come to Red Eye 3 times post my initial review and clearly love it enough to continue coming back. All three times were on a Sunday during brunch and although the line may have been long they were extremely accommodating and were nice enough to call us when it was our turn. I'm a creature of habit so the caramel latte is still delicious. REALLY love the huevos rancheros and would highly recommend that as well. Staff was nice, attentive but not pushy. This is my favorite spot in Montclair for lunch. Try the Orchard... u will not be disappointed

Food leaves something to be desired nothing special. My main issue with this establishment is the attitude their staff and management take towards customers they deem "undesirable" if you catch my drift. It was brought to my attention they not only do not take customer complaints seriously but customer service is at the bottom of their priority list. Very sad will not spend another dollar here. Sad for what the town of Montclair used to represent. read more

Very very cute local spot, the exact type of place I come to Montclair for. I came here for breakfast with a friend yesterday and we were both very pleased! The space itself is a bit small, but not too too cramped which is nice, also very well decorated. The service was friendly and fairly quick, though I could always do with more water refills (I'm a guzzler tbh). For food, I tried the green eggs and ham, which was pretty good and I did get a kick of the whimsical name. The food wasn't served a tad luke warm for my taste and the veggies in the eggs (a scramble of kale, onions, and ham) were slightly undercooked, again this may be a matter of personal taste. The toast was delicious hearty wheat, they might source their bread from the Montclair Bread Co. in which case I got to get my hands on some! And the potato hash on the side was well flavored and cooked with yummy peppers and onions, but I generally like a crispier hash for my taste. Overall it was a good meal, but next round I have my eye on the Red Eye Sub, which I think will be more my taste profile. My friend got the fat Elvis sandwich which was served on that same amazing bread with peanut butter, banana, and pretty thick nice bacon. It was delicious, an odd combination that I've seen offered before and never tried until now; I do wish I had more bacon, which got a bit over powered by the strength of both peanut butter and banana, but that is a minor complaint I would definitely order this again. We also each had an iced coffee which tasted very fresh and unlike a lot of places they didn't overpower the cold coffee with milk. The prices were very very reasonable if not straight up cheap, that whole meal cost about $30 with tip. Between price, aesthetic, and pretty good food I'd say this place is well worth a try and I will be coming back. read more

I just recently started going to the Montclair farmers market and was looking for some takeout after today's shopping. I got an iced vanilla chai and a tuna sandwich. The chai was delicious, although the vanilla made it a little sweeter than I prefer so I'll probably get a regular chai next time I go. The tuna sandwich was a good portion for a light lunch. The tuna salad looked/tasted like it had a bit of carrot mixed in, as there was an orange tinge and bit of sweetness but it was a welcome twist on a traditional tuna sandwich. Will definitely return here on a future Walnut Street visit. I'm also trying to transition to zero waste, so I must also say I really appreciated that my sandwiched was wrapped in paper :) wish I took a picture of the sandwich before chowing down but I was just too hungry! read more

Went here on a Wednesday at 6 pm with a friend to catch up, but was closed, despite all signage indicating that it was open until 11 pm. Much more than just a cafe, Red Eye is there for you when you need them. - It's 10 a.m. and your kids just put you through the ringer getting to school. They faked illnesses, changed outfits ten times and forgot their lunch. You went to run errands after you dropped them off and now you need coffee and breakfast made by someone else. Red Eye is there for you with a plethora of coffee options and the Sweet Scramble (cheesy scrambled eggs with red onion jam & arugula on an English muffin), all for less than $10. The red onion jam makes this already tasty breakfast sandwich jump off the plate and into your mouth faster than you can ever imagine. - You pretend you don't need sugar, but you do. It's 2:47 p.m. and you need something to tide you over until dinner, preferably with sugar in it. Red Eye is there for you with a White Chocolate Coconut Oatmeal Cookie for $2. This cookie is one of my favorite cookies of all-time. You know when they can serve it to you on a small plate and it fits, it is not just perfectly blended, but just big enough to make you immediately happy. - You don't want to cook, you missed that window to get it going. You don't want to spend a ton of money and you don't want to wait to eat. Red Eye is there for you, again, at about 7:18 p.m. You get the Shrimp & Grits (Coconut grits w/ extra jumbo shrimp, chorizo, & shallots in a Moroccan curry sauce w/ tomato jam) and you remain happy for a month. If you don't know what grits are and haven't been to the South to find out, engage yourself in this proposition and try this dish. You won't be sorry. Your significant other gets the Moroccan Quinoa (Grilled zucchini over toasted quinoa, chickpea, shallot, almonds & dried cranberry salad) and even though you are not Vegan, you take four bites from her plate while she is in the bathroom. You hope she doesn't finish it, but she does. So you get another White Chocolate Coconut Oatmeal Cookie. Yes you do. They are open all day and into the night and the food is excellent. The place is very nice inside, filled with art and tables and accessible for whatever your plan is - a meal, a snack, a coffee, a hang. These are places you are happy live in your neighborhood. read more

5 stars because THIS. PLACE. DESERVES. IT. Red Eye Cafe is the definition of a cafe. Beautiful hand-brewed coffee. Meals for breakfast and lunch. A selection of pastries. Cozy atmosphere. Friendly and quick service. And the part that really got me? IT'S BYOB Y'ALLLLL! I brought a thing of champagne for mimosas and the waiter brought out a carafe of OJ as soon as I pulled out my bottle. He already knows me well. So the food. I ordered the Green Eggs and Ham which came with Kale, Shallots, Ham, and Gruyere cheese all mixed with the eggs with some Multi-grain Bread and Potatoes on the side. I needed more because it was perfection. The flavors were on point. The textures were on point. The kale wasn't bitter at all and I was dying for more. Afterward, I ordered a Sludge Coffee to go and it was soooo good! Cold Brew iced coffee with milk and lightly sweetened. After being a barista for 2 years, this coffee made me fall in love all over again with coffee. Thank you Red Eye for restoring my faith in cafes and giving me hope. I'm definitely coming back to see you all again. read more

i've been here thrice thus far. though there will be many more times to add to that in the future. lemme just tell you what i've experienced here that was bigiddy bangin': -iced dirty chai (chai with a shot of espresso?? genius. i love it. i get it every time.) -pulled pork sammich (so juicy, so tasty.) -brownie w/ice cream (i traded out the vanilla for the salted caramel. i almost jizz'd in my pants. and is that really a brownie? because that's like the most freakishly amazing brownie full of overwhelming richness in a cake-sized slab i've EVER had.) -King Kong waffle w/salted caramel (OMG) ice cream and two strips of Canadian bacon. (i was worried when i read "Canadian bacon" thinking of those little round ham slices or whatever - this ain't that (see pic.) this was some thick, crispy, sweet and tasty bacon strips that should make Canada more than proud.) -french toast (there is mention of vanilla custard on the menu and whilst we were kinda expecting a dollop or two of the custardy goodness it was actually used in making the french toast and/or drizzled all over it. no need for butter or syrup on this tasty goodness. at all.) annnnd, my friend who reads books (who does that??) was interested in one of the books on the shelf and they just let her borrow it - no signing it out or anything - honor system in effect, yo. there is also aways (local) artwork on the walls for sale. coolcoolcool. so yeah, it's awesome. you're doing yourself a disservice if you haven't been. read more

What service? We came in and after 15 minutes finally got water. In total sat about 30 mins and gave up because the wait staff was hustling around us but no one was helping. Our waiter came out and looked at us and went right back into the kitchen. I wish I could review the food but the ambiance is all we got to observe. Not impressed. I really, really wanted to like Red Eye Cafe as I love patronizing local coffee places. But unfortunately based on my experience today I can't recommend it. If a coffee shop can't make espresso drinks better than I can at home, then I don't see a reason to patronize it. My test (and favorite coffee drink) is the macchiato. At its best, a macchiato will have the strong essence of espresso infused into the foam. Here, it was just a bland espresso shot with some poor foam (not really micro foam; just seemed like whipped milk) on top. Really bland -- the coffee didn't seem fresh at all. Again, if it's no better than I can do at home, then why bother? Also, seemed like it was just one shot of espresso, yet they charged $3.25 for this, which seems high to me. My companion ordered a caramel latte; granted, this is not a gourmet drink, but his just tasted completely like sugar without any subtlety at all. Now, in addition to the meh coffee, the service was poor too. Took a long time to order, then took a long time (10+ min) for the barista to make the coffee (I kid you not -- he was standing behind the counter eating a waffle while we were waiting for him to make our drinks). Finally after getting my coffee, it took me 5+ min to get someone's attention so I could pay. It really seemed disorganized behind the counter. As I said up front, I really hoped this place would be better; I'd love for them to succeed and it would be great for the neighborhood. But if they continue like today, I'm afraid they won't be around long. read more

The better half an I had our first date at a fantastic coffee shop in Montclair called Cafe Eclectic -- time went on and a year or so ago CE closed, sadly ... Since then, while occasionally accompanying my wife to work I would suffer through a cup of joe at Starbucks or Panera or some other joint ... not any more. We did a quick search for a place to go and stumbled upon Red Eye Cafe ... just 5 minutes into sitting here, I knew I was in the right place. Then I saw Anthony, the long time manager of Cafe Eclectic and now owner of Red Eye and everything feel into place. I can say several things, and will : Coffee is strong, hot and served in large beautiful mugs. The s'mores cookie I had (but shouldn't have) was moist and really delicious The decor is prefect -- a modernized, clean and slick version of CE .. though I do wish the puppets made a return, those things were outstanding. Long and Short -- I will return here multiple times and enjoy every moment. A little piece of my marriage is tucked into this quaint and warm Coffee Shop. sorry for the sappiness... read more

After reading Yelp reviews, I talked boyfriend into going. He didn't really want to go but I mentioned the Yelp reviews. What an effen mistake to waste money and time at this "local" place. It was a nice day , so we opted to sit outside in the alley that leads to the back. Service was painfully slow. The owner came out and asked if our order was taken yet, we said no. About 10 minutes later a girl came out and struggled to take our order. We ordered 2 glasses of tap water, 2 glasses of lemonade, the Turkey with avocado sandwich and the pulled pork sandwich. Another 10 minutes ticked by and some guy walked buy and asked if our order was taken. Then he asked if we wanted water while we were waiting. Um - yeah, we already asked for that, which he wasn't aware of so we just said "yes, that would be great." The lemonade came out and it tasted like water with a slice of lemon tossed in. This was lemon water, but definitely NOT lemonade. The turkey sandwich came with a side of greens with not more than a teaspoon of dressing for the entire thing. The sandwich didn't taste right - almost like the turkey was on the verge of going bad. It was nothing special and I certainly could have made the same thing at home and have it taste better. I struggled through half and called it quits. My guy got his sandwich and immediately noticed the cheese he asked to have omitted when he placed the other. He took one bite of his pulled pork and asked 'Can you try this for me to see what it tastes like?" I took one SMALL bite and was grossed out - it literally tasted like tuna. It came with a side of potato chips which were incredibly stale and some red cabbage coleslaw that tasted to much like vinegar. He also struggled through his half and called it quits. Then the owners/managers kept complaining to us and other employees about how the toilet stopped up and he was fixing it. I mean, we were only 5 feet away from them so we heard every word, which wasn't appetizing. Having that visual in my head while I'm trying to choke down a meal that seemed like it may give me a tinge of food poisoning was all I needed to ask for the check. Even though we asked for the other half of each sandwich to go, we promptly threw them out as soon as we walked past a garbage can. Outdoor seating consists of one table in the front on the sidewalk and two small tables in the alley. What a royal bummer to waste our afternoon at this place. Won't go back, even if it may have been an off day according to all of the positive reviews on Yelp. read more

Since I love going out for breakfast and am always eager to try new cafes, I really wish I could say I loved Red Eye. Unfortunately I was not impressed and didn't see what all the hype is about. I came here at 10:30am on a Thursday morning with 2 friends. I'm a big believer in good service from the second a customer walks into a business, especially a restaurant. When greeted with a smile or a "Hi, how are you?" my first impression is very positive and I feel welcomed when I sit down. However, when my group walked in, the hostess just stared at us and then was unfriendly when we asked if there was a table available for us. The interaction was bizarre. There was a 10 minute wait so we sat outside because the cafe was very hot and stuffy inside. Our waitress was attentive and very nice. My meal was good and filling but nothing outstanding -- cheddar egg white omelette with hash and toast. I also had the New Orleans Sludge Coffee (an overpriced cold-brewed iced latte with cardamom) which tasted just like regular iced coffee to me and was not strong at all. It didn't taste anything like true New Orleans coffee. At the end of the meal, my friend asked the hostess for a to-go box. The hostess rolled her eyes and came back with a box a few minutes later. Then we went up to the counter to pay and she just stared at us. She said nothing as we paid the bill and nothing as we walked out. Why the rudeness? I did not get a good vibe here, but based on the numerous positive reviews on here, I'm willing to give this place another shot. read more

I've been to this place multiple times w multiple people on different occasions. Hipster babies of Montclair unite: you have a new place to take your parents! I've been here twice since the opening two weeks ago and both times with excellent results. This will be my new go-to spot not just because of the food, but also because the dining area is wide enough for a stroller (though not recommended) and loud enough for cranky babies. My favorite here was the Red Eye Hash and it was hearty and delicious. Two fried eggs with potatoes, parsnips and roast beef bits coated in a light gravy. At $9 it was big enough for two or for a heavy brunch. I've also gotten the omelette (of the pick two ingredients variety), which was well made. My wife's winner was the fat Elvis. It was sliced banana, peanut butter and honey on a multigrain topped with a few slices of bacon. Fat = bacon, as it comes in a non-"fat" version as well. I personally loved their Americano. This is my usual drink and I get it everywhere. I like mine smooth but with a nice bite at first. Theirs had the bite that I like, but was much smoother as it finished - perfect for me. It was also served in a unique mug, which was a nice touch. My wife has gotten the NOLA inspired sludge coffee and loved it. All in all, friendly staff, nice decor, good food and overall great place. I'll be back for the pastries! My faves: - Red Eye Hash - Americano read more

A quaint cafe located off the main street in Montclair. They serve brunch and lunch foods as well as your standard coffee drinks. I had the chaider (chai + cider), which was definitely unique. As soon as it was brought to the table, I could smell the aroma of spices, yum! It was a little on the too sweet side for me. I ordered the medium for $4.25. The venue is a little bit cramped, but cozy. The decor reminds me of a hipster/refurbished train station, with tiled walls. There's metered street parking available right in front, but if you go a block or two further, there's free 2 hour parking. This location is about a 10 min walk from Bloomfield Ave, the main street of Montclair. read more

I moved to Montclair in January and am never leaving - mostly because of this establishment. Love this place! Been several times but just ate there again on Saturday. Try "The Sludge" ice coffee. My fiancée got the fruit and vegetable sandwich: pesto, arugula, pears, goat cheese and avocado. In her words, "It was bangin!" I got the tarragon chicken salad on multi-grain not the cranberry walnut bread. Strong(!) tarragon flavor but still very good. All their hot drinks are on-point, soups are homemade and always great. It's one of those place in which the food doesn't make you feel guilty afterwards. A salad instead of fries??? Red Eye is the quintessential cafe spot I've been dreaming of. The place is cute and the staff is so friendly and helpful! We were there on a Saturday night for almost 4 hours and never once did we feel rushed to leave. The sludge coffee I ordered was stellar (better than the iced coffee I had in NOLA actually) and so were the sandwiches. We tried the pesto chicken and the sweet potato chicken sandwiches....so good and just the right size to leave you wanting some dessert :) Dessert options all sounded amazing but I opted for the vegan, gluten free brownie with ice cream which was fabulous. Went here with a group of 7 to get some brunch after a long night. They dont take reservations, even for a party our size, and we had to wait about 40 minutes to get seated. Bummer. Once sat, we were promptly brought water without asking which was nice. They leave water on the table which I am a fan of. It also looks cool inside. I like the bare old fashioned bulb look. The menu is pretty unique. I settled on the quesadilla. When it arrived to the table, I thought i chose poorly, but it was actually delicious. So, why 3 stars? A person in my party ordered pancakes. It is literally, 3 pankcakes with powdered sugar on them. Very simple. They brought out all the food, with exception of the pancakes. We notified them we were missing them once, twice, 3 times, 4 TIMES! It took about 15 minutes to get the pancakes. By the time they came out, everyone was just about done with their food. Unacceptable. We were offered a meek apology and charged full price for the pancakes. give me a break. There are enough brunch places in the area for me to skip this one in the future. read more

I was encouraged to try this place after reading a number of reviews. First attempt to eat here was on a Saturday when it was hell-hour, too crowded. So tried coming again on a weekend and same deal, too busy and long wait time. In between the two weekend trips, I went in to order the house dirty chai latte. Very well executed! Good about of spice and bitterness with the espresso. The last time I went to try the food was mid-week during lunchtime (around 1:30/2pm) and there weren't many people. Ordered a few specials off the daily menu: my Mom got an omelet platter with the cranberry walnut toast (by request) and I tried the chicken salad on ciabatta bread with a muslin side salad. My sandwich was less than desirable. I didn't expect my ciabatta bread to be hallowed out and panini pressed to a thin board-like texture. And the chicken salad was more like a whole chicken with a mayo dressing topped with muslin greens paired with a huge side of muslin covered in EVOO... don't know what they were thinking with all that other than be healthy! On the other hand, my Mom's omelet was really good especially the cranberry walnut bread - sweet, tangy, and crunchy due to the nuts. We also ordered coffee - was given way too early and unfortunately the waiter never offered us a refill - not sure if that would've cost more? Its a small place with decent mellow-ish music, lots of Radiohead and alternative, ambient stuff. Staff is nice but to themselves for the most part. Not into chit-chat. Price is a little on the pricey side but it is Montclair. Worth a trip to check out the coffee for yourself and I might check out the food again but not if its going to be such a hassle. read more

I adore this place! I came for the first time this week for lunch and ordered a tea, a soup, and a sandwich. Everything was fresh and delicious. The staff was friendly and seemed to know a lot about the items on the menu. The jasmine green tea was served in a large home style mug which I adored. The lentil soup was chunky and flavorful with just the right amount of seasoning. I chose one of the specials they had that day- the fruit and veg sandwich. The ingredients were noticeably fresh and the combination of the pear with the vegetables was a delicious surprise. My bill (with 20% tip) came to the low low price of $15 I will be going back again tonight for dinner! read more
