Don't bother! I use to order from here all the time, but after this last order, I will never again. My favorite thing is pad thai - I ordered it without fish sauce and with BOTH chicken and shrimp. They forgot the chicken. The meal itself was almost all noodle - I couldn't find the egg, the veggies, no hint of garlic or toppings. Absolutely flavorless and BEYOND disappointing. I also ordered the shrimp spring rolls - absolutely flavorless. Beef skewers weren't bad but not worth going for again. First time trying this place which was recommended by a friend. We ordered lunch specials to go, portion and price were reasonable. I originally wanted Thai fried rice with chicken however I guess they heard wrong and I ended up with pad Thai which I actually really liked. The noodles weren't sweet and peanut-y as I have had in the past and didn't like. I also liked the vegetable dumplings with the sauce. The food here is GREAT but the atmosphere is lacking and so is the service. I usually order for takeout. The crispy pork is INSANE. Red Basil is my go to Thai restaurant in my townas Rutherford. I mostly do take out but it's still a cool place to sit down and eat in also. My favorite dish is the Pineapple Fried Rice with Beef and Crispy Pork. The Crispy Pork as an extra add on, it is well season and adds an different dimension to the Pineapple Fried Rice that is on the mild side. But watch out for the Thai Chicken Wings they are super hot and sometimes almost make me want to cry. This place is close to home and as a fan of Thai it's been on my list of places to try.... for almost 3 years now. The weather was shitty but there was no food in the house and I figured I should *probably* get off the couch and get some fresh air and food. Yelp showed 8% cash back, and who doesn't love that? So I figured today was the day. I ordered for pickup, started reading reviews, and that's when I got nervous. When I got back to the car I immediately inspected my order of spring rolls and chicken pad Thai. Everything looked good so I sped home to eat it. I was pleasantly surprised. It's not the best, but it was edible and hit the spot. The reason for 3 stars is because I had to call the restaurant after I walked in because there was no one at the hostess stand, there were no lights on, and if it weren't for the doors being unlocked, or the small group that walked out before I called, the place looked closed. Since the Pandemic, its been quite some time i have been able to go out and do more reviews. Now that COVID is less prevailent and most are vaccinated, I now have a little more time to get another review going. While i was working at my new Job in Lyndhurst, NJ, i saw Red Basil was within a 10-15 mins drive of the office complex. So lets get get this review started: Atmosphere: I didnt stay in due to time constraints on this day. I ordered it to go. The place had red walls and some deco pieces. It appeared to be fairly modern style. the right half was set aside for pick/togo orders, while the left side was for the dine-in customers. Wait Staff: I rang the bell and a nice woman who was masked took my order. They seemed very friendly during my to go visit. Drink: I did not order a drink on this visit. Appetizer: Tom Yum vegatable soup - The soup was really good. It had the pungent sour/lemongrass flavor that wasnt watered down. it had a good spice kick as well, which is a plus for me. =) Entrees: If you have read my other Thai restaurant reviews, you may have guessed, i ordered Chicken Pad Thai(extra spicy) from the lunch specials menu. First the portion size was a bit on the small side. Not trying to knock them but i guess costs has gone up since the pandemic or they make the portions smaller at nearly every restaurant. But since im on a 'diet', the portion size was good! I was worried because normally when i order it very spicy or "Thai Spicy", the pad thai comes in a reddish color. When i saw my order, it was the normal mid - dark beigey color. I was thinking this is not going to be spicy and i was going to be dissappointed. I tasted it and low and behold it was spicy without being red. So i was pleasantly surpised. The flavors was on point and again i was soooo happy it tasted good. This ranks up there with some of the great tasting Pad Thai i have had ever! So kudos to the chef who made my food today. Overall: What can i say, i saw 3.5 stars and thought this should be good. i have heard people say that if a place has 3.5 stars in asian restaurants, it generally will be good for other asians. lol In this case it was very good for my first try. Now i will hopefully re-visit this place for a sit down and see if there is consistency the second time around. I enjoyed the food. it tasted good and the flavor was consistent with other good places. Price is a bit high as well, but i guess thats going to be the norm going forward. My lunch special was $10.95 but came out to be $12.06 includes a 3% surcharge/fee for using a CC. If price isnt a factor for you, then you might want to give this place a try. Overall this is a good place for Thai take-out. I've eaten in the restaurant (pre-Covid) and have done takeout, both experiences have been solid. My go-to dishes are the Thai Fried Rice (good flavor, fresh ingredients), Pad See Ew (they're so generous with their chicken with this dish! I just wish it was a tad saucier) and the Larb Gai (the spice on this dish is great, not overpowering and with the hint of citrus *chefs kiss* so good!) Terrible place I ordered from Uber eat with specifics notes due to allergies I requested no eggs no nuts the restaurants crossed out my notes and sent me the food with eggs and nuts in addition they advertised a free order of roll with any orders over $25 I did not receive the rolls and when you call they do not answer the phone . Red Basil has to be my favorite restaurant in Rutherford. The food is not only delicious but also vegan friendly. The Golden Tofu chef special is so amazing that it's turning into one of my meals. The service is excellent, my family and I have been going for around a year now, and every time we come in the staff knows who we are and can predict our orders for us! The restaurant itself is beautiful too, with an atmosphere that is regal yet sets a comfortable vibe. About half the restaurant is now sectioned off for pickup and delivery so it feels small inside now. Service is blunt and to the point, no smiling or pleasantries. Maybe it was due to having my food delivered? That's still no excuse though... We ordered dinner which consisted of curry puffs, duck pad thai, grilled pork chops, and an order of thai iced for myself and the wife. - The puffs were tasty, nothing wrong there. - The duck pad thai was bland and the duck over cooked. This restaurant was just okay.It is BYOB which is a huge perk. Decor was cute. But overall I probably wouldn't come back here unless I was forced to. The food was meh. Nothing really special and I felt that flavor lacked a bit. We ordered the Thai springs rolls for an appetizer and it was decent. It comes with spicy sauce and some kind of duck sauce. The pineapple fried rice had 6 pieces of pineapple in it. Let's keep in mind the pieces are small so calling it pineapple fried rice was a joke. The service was fine. The servers were friendly but they forgot one of our drinks and I had to ask them to refill our glasses of water. The restaurant wasn't even full by any means. Ordered take out from Red Basil after hearing decently good things about it from a friend. We ordered the Singapore noodles and red curry. Upon arrival to pick up our order, the lady at the front seemed rather disheveled. She told us to wait five minutes before she even checked if our food was ready. They have rather disorganized system of fulfilling take out orders. When we got home, we dug right into the food. The red curry was so amazing. I like to think of myself as a harsh critic of Thai food, since it is my favorite cuisine. But they cooked the red curry so perfectly, it was smooth but not too watery. The Singapore noodles were also very good, they had a nice kick to them. I actually really enjoyed the Thai food here, but I had to knock down a star for the service. Yes, it had a fishy smell but I did have a chicken dish, so I wasn't too bothered. My husband who isn't vegetarian, had the spicy basil noodles with tofu and spring rolls. He said the dish had a fishy smell to it, and he wasn't able to eat it. It may be the fish sauce they add to dishes. I also ordered chicken dumplings which I've yet to try. The pad Thai was decent - a bit sweeter than spicy but that may just be my preference. Thai tea was great - not overly sweet. I love that there are so many vegetarian options here. I do wish that the dishes were more flavorful. I did enjoy the Pad See Ew with mock duck. The curry and fried rice dishes were pretty bland and the veggies in the curry were a bit disappointing - they were the basic frozen veggies. Would have loved to see more fresh veggies in there. This has become our go to Thai place in the area! Everything has been delicious and the staff are really nice. They must've had a busy night one time we ordered and they called to let us know it would be an hour or longer. We weren't in a rush so we said no worries. The woman still called a few times apologizing and even threw in free dessert. It's a small place with not a lot of staff so just be aware it could take a little longer than to get your food. Their food is overpriced, unflavorful, and their customer service is horrible. If you call the person does not take the time to listen to your order and will hang up on you or interrupt you while you are speaking. They advertise free food when you spend a certain amount and use a coupon or when you order online. It's all bs because they won't give it to you unless you tell them to and fight for it. Their website is broken and you can't place orders on it. Their restaurant is small dark and dinky and their portions and prices are ridiculous. It costs 50 dollars to get two meals and an appetizer, of which you would get more at any other place. The food is bland and not spicy at all, the chicken wings are super dry, just ugh. The food here is great and I enjoy it but the service is not always as good as the food if you are ordering to pick up. Sometimes I have ordered 25 minutes in advance and my order has not been ready. The staff is always nice, however, and they include free items when your order is not ready on time. I would recommend trying this place. read more
