Been living close to Red Basil for a while and have had it several times! Usually we opt for take out, but you can choose to dine in. The restaurant is small but decorated beautifully inside. We placed an order for pick up. My husband and I shared the chicken dumplings which came with a special soy sauce mixture that had some citrus in it. It was a pleasant surprise but made the dish taste very fresh. I wanted a 2nd order & now we know for next time to order two! We also both got noodles - my husband glass noodles with beef & they asked him what heat level he wanted between 0 & 5. I ordered the Basil noodles with chicken and a spicy garlic sauce and it was spicier than I anticipated but still delicious! Red Basil never disappoints! Delivery Order - Ordering from here for the 1st time and not a great experience. Food was hot and delivery was quick but that's the only high point. For ~$15 each for the Basil Fried Rice and Pad Thai Noodles, I was expecting more. Quantity and Quality was just okay and definitely could have been better for the price. Fried Rice was a little try and not much flavor. Pad Thai had something like crystals (I am assuming either Brown Sugar or something that was a part of recipe that didn't dissolve well) which kept bothering me while eating. They offer $8 worth of Spring Rolls for orders over $30 but it was just 2 pieces. $8 for 2 spring rolls is too steep. Sweet Roti at $7 was a joke. You buy a can of condensed milk and some ready-made Roti from any Indian Store and get twice as much done at home for the same price and taste. Wouldn't recommend, at least for Delivery. read more

I'm embarrassed to admit that after a decade-and-change from my original review... myself and the Mrs. have never really deviated from our go-to meal - spicy (drunken) noodles with tofu, no egg. It's my kids that have bounced around the menu to try different items (most recently Khao Mun Gai which got good reviews until one kid attempted to eat three slices of raw jalapeno at once - seeds and all - and it wasn't pretty). Sure, I've tried their scallion pancakes (so good, but much better when you eat them there and not as a take-out dish). And they've discontinued those complimentary scrumptious crisp banana rolls with every order. (Boo!) But it's all about that spicy noodle dish. Yeah, the portion size has shrunk over the years while the price has ticked up. But it's just a killer dish that's perfectly balanced and my litmus test when judging other Thai restaurants I've been to. Staff - always friendly. I recently dined at Red Basil in Rutherford, NJ, and I must say they have good service compared to most Asian restaurants around here. The staff is friendly and always greets you with a smile as they serve and greet guests. We came on a quiet Sunday afternoon, and we were the only customers in the restaurant. However, I noticed that Red Basil is filled with customers during lunchtime on regular weekdays. For my meal, I chose one of their lunch specials. I started with the Grilled Chicken Satay as my appetizer and selected the Spicy Noodle with Chicken as my entrée. While I wouldn't say the satay peanut sauce was the absolute best I've ever had, I must give them credit for the generous portion of chicken on the skewers. They certainly don't skimp on the chicken when it comes to their satay. Having grown up and spent most of my life in Malaysia, I used to visit Thailand for vacations a few times every year. Trying their Spicy Noodles with Chicken definitely felt like a taste of the noodles I had from one of the aunties selling fried Thai noodles on the street. I usually had to add soy sauce whenever I ordered fried noodles from most Asian restaurants around NJ, but it was exceptional at this one. I was in the Rutherford area and had a taste for Thai. I did a quick web search and came across Red Basil. I decided to give them a try. The virtual menu says you can get a free dish when you order online so I decided to go that route. I ordered shrimp pad Thai, calamari and a can of sprite. It came up to $31.80. I didn't see option for a free dish but there were some coupons like free ice cream if you spend $20 or free spring roll if you spend $30. I didn't use those coupons. When I went to pick up the food the restaurant was clean and there was a sign to ring bell to pick up food. The server came as soon as I rang the bell, confirmed my order and gave it to me. The food was packaged well, utensils provided and a straw for my beverage. The calamari was a disappointment. There was so much breading it looked like a chicken nugget and not fried calamari. Biting in to it the calamari was rubbery and the only thing helping the flavor was the dipping sauce. I will say the side of sweet chili sauce it came with was pretty good. The shrimp pad Thai was delicious. The right amount of egg, peanuts, carrots, bean sprouts and rice noodle. They make you pay an extra $2 if you select shrimp and for the large bowl of pad Thai there were only six pieces of shrimp in my entire dish. Given the medium size of the shrimp I felt more pieces should have been added. I would return but I would order a different appetizer and I would double up on the protein. Red Basil, just off Park Avenue and steps from the train station, offers freshly prepared, tasty, and reasonably-priced Thai food in a cozy, casual ambiance. We stopped in to Red Basil for dinner on a recent Saturday night while we were in the area visiting a nearby microbrewery. We didn't have reservations, but the hostess and server was able to seat us right away. The restaurant only has eight or ten tables, so I'd suggest making reservations if it's not a spontaneous decision to drop in for a meal. My dining companion and I split a Tofu Tod appetizer, which was a slightly dryer than I prefer but still tasty. I opted for the Drunken Noodles (or, Pad Kee Mao) with tofu ($14), soft flat rice noodles sautéed in spicy garlic soy sauce served with egg and fresh basil. My dining companion went with the Pad Basil with shrimp ($17), a more traditional entree comprised of sautéed shrimp fresh basil, chili, string bean, garlic, and bell pepper served with a side of white rice. Both dishes were tasty, although we both thought they should have been a little spicier even though they were ordered "medium spicy". I did notice the hostess/server seemed a little impatient with some of the other customers but I acknowledge it can be difficult for one person to handle all of the tables even in a small restaurant like Red Basil. Also, the restaurant, like many others, has added a 3% surcharge for using credit cards to pay for your meal. I understand operating costs have gone up, but it always seems a little tacky to me when restaurants establish this policy rather than just increasing the menu prices. What's next? A surcharge for eating in the restaurant because utility costs have gone up? Pro Tip: Red Basil doesn't have a private parking lot, but there is plenty of on-street. Bring change for the meters before 8pm. read more

Inflation or not, I am not sure how these guys stay open. Shrimp roll order was just two slim rolls cut diagonally for four pieces total. The Asian waitress was very adamant in taking my order quickly, so she can close on time. Therefore, you will feel rushed if you come dine near closing hours. Two stars is being too nice. So me and my wife searched the find me gluten free app because she has Celiac disease and can not consume gluten or anything cross contaminated. Parking is easy, it's located right off Park Ave. What sells me with RB is their lunch specials. For ten bucks you get a ton of fresh and delicious food. My go-to's are the tofu pad Thai or the lemongrass chicken. The tofu pad Thai is flavorful and fresh, served with your choice of appetizer. The lemongrass chicken is tasty and served with some delicious sticky rice. The papaya salad here is to die for! It's my favorite, I could literally eat it everyday.
