Came here once before and enjoyed the food for the most part. Decided to stop in on the way back from Dillon beach. Unfortunately the food wasn't as good as we remembered. The shredded chicken and chicken kabobs were super dry. We go two all meat combos and only the ground meat one was delicious. The lamb was ok and kebabs are the same. Mesmerizing ambiance . I was inside listening to the guitar or bağlama strings chant its exotic and beautiful music. With the decor and ambiance, kinda brings you to another place . Staff is super friendly. There was a a sign that said anything under $30 then in cash, but being a solo guy they waved it off . We came here for lunch and were pleasantly surprised by the whole experience. We were warmly welcomed when we arrived and everyone that worked there was friendly and kind. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. We chose to sit outdoors in a covered patio area because it was a nice day out. This restaurant is within walking distance on downtown Petaluma if you are in the area. I had the falafel wrap and my husband had the chicken kebab. We both loved our meal and the food was really fresh. The falafel wrap was large in portion so I ate half and saved the other half for dinner. Food: 2/5 I came around 5:30 on a Sunday. The chicken plate I wanted was sold out but the kind gentleman offered to make a wrap instead. Or chicken shish. I felt the chicken was moist but did not have any sort of flavor. Not any garlic, salt, pepper etc, including the rice. Service: 5/5 I only had to wait around 10 minutes, and again the gentleman working there was very kind. Ambiance: 3/5 I went to just pick-up food, but waited inside. It was quiet and no other customers inside. Seemed clean, I did not notice any public restroom for use. Overall, I likely would not come back. Service was not as expected given the warm culture of Turks. We were seated. Order was taken and we never spoke to anyone till we paid. No one came to check on us, our needs, or otherwise what we thought, liked, or disliked. I found the food bland and not as fresh as I would expect. The ground meat kabobs were not "hot" off the grill nor was the chicken, plus the chicken kabobs were dry. Presentation was OK, but the Plate was too small for the food, and food had to be managed regularly at the borders. One worry I don't want when eating! Also, not enough rice and too much slaw. The balance was off. I said maybe due to the fact that some may enjoy what would seem to be Turkish food, but not for me as it was not truly authentic in flavor, balance, and freshness. Located a bit away from downtown Petaluma, Real Donner is worth the walk (or drive) over. It's a small, unassuming spot but seems to be well liked among locals. Service was warm and friendly. I tried the falafel plate which is a lot of food and comes with hummus, tahini, toasted pita and a salad. The salad items were nicely dressed and fully of flavor with the pickled cabbage in the mix. I love this place! Great food and staff. My issue with this place is the takeout containers. Really grinds my gears. Been going here for years and it has not changed. My husband and I each ordered an entree. Got home, took it out of bag and our to go boxes were all soggy and almost falling apart. We also usually get an order of their delicious hummus, but the plastic containers they serve it in leaks. That orange oil garnish they put on it leaks all over the bag. Very homey. Covered outdoor seating which was perfect for today's weather at lunch. I got the dolmas which were excellent! Reminded me of my grandmother's and Mom's dolmas. Grape leaves were tender and the filling was succulent and well seasoned. I also ordered the chicken kebab plate. Chicken was flavorful and tender, a nice serving of rice and salad. My friend got the falafel plate. The falafels were on the larger side with two types of dipping sauce. The salad was the entire length of the plate. No one left hungry unless they chose to. This review is very late but I have to write it. We went to Real Doner when they first opened a long long time ago. We loved every bite of everything they make. It was as traditional as you might find in Turkey. But more importantly the owner was incredibly kind, gracious and excited about his food. He kept bringing us food to try, gratis, because he was so wanting for us to experience all he had to offer. We never forgot that. And remained dedicated to going there whenever we could. If I remember correctly his wife was going through some medical issues at the time and he was basically dealing with that and woking his restaurant at the same time. We just got back recently from Germany, where we lived for five months for our own unfortunate family medical issues.. And the Turkish food there was incredible and reminded me of Real Doner. Went to Real Döner Turkish Food in Petaluma. We saw some reviews saying it was halal, so didn't think much about it. By the time the food came out, we had some doubts about the halal status of the meat. It's our fault we didn't do our due diligence since one review on yelp did mention the owner's reluctance in answering a simple question: is the meat sourced in your restaurant halal? At any rate, I went up to the guy and asked if the meat is halal. I paid for the meal regardless since it's not his fault we didn't do our research. What annoyed me is his response. He said, brother just say bismillah before you eat. I asked him if this was said at the time of the slaughter, and he said just say this before you eat. With all due respect to restaurant owners, they know their craft well, but I don't go to them for fiqh and interpretation/implementation of Islamic rules. There are certain requirements that need to be fulfilled before an animal is slaughtered to make it zabiha and these are wajib (obligatory) (e.g. must be facing the qibla, the name of Allah is said, etc.). Saying bismillah before eating is mustahab (recommended), but not wajib. Wajib acts must be observed whereas mustahab acts are optional. To the restaurant owner: just be straightforward and tell people the meat sourced isn't halal. read more

My order was ready when they said it would be and packaged nicely. The food was delicious. First time trying Turkish food, and it was so DELICIOUS!!! I actually hate coffee, but wanted to try Turkish Coffee and wow it so much better than American coffee. It has a nice dark rich flavor, but take your time drinking it as it has a lot of caffeine. For food, I got the Falafel Wrap which was incredible as it tasted light and refreshing. I love the outer wrap piece as it was soft with crunchy edges. For dessert, I got the kadayif for the first time, and the syrup it is in is super sweet. However, the fried noodles and nuts inside are so good!!! I've never tasted anything like it and highly recommend. I absolutely love this tucked away hidden family-run spot. It is the real deal Turkish food. One of my few regular spot where I am never disappointed. Came today solo for late lunch with my dog and she was given lamb/beef on the house... as if I didn't already love them! Plenty of good places to eat in Petaluma, but the doner (shawarma meat) at Real Doner is worth trying. One of the few places I've tried since moving here where I knew I'd be back soon. The dinner is served with warm pita and a flavorful yogurt sauce, rice, salad and some pickled cabbage. A very filling meal at a reasonable price. The dolma was from a can I'm sure and the falafel, while made fresh to order, was not something I'd order again either. But the portion of the doner meal is more than most people can eat, especially with the pita bread too...so really there's not need for appetizers. First time here. My daughter and I both ordered the chicken doner wrap. It was good, but was lacking flavor (2 stars). My other daughter ordered a falafel wrap. She said (and I agree) it would be 4 stars (GOOD). My daughter noted how big the wraps were. I guess they need to justify the price. I could've given this place 3 stars for the food alone, but... The woman who took our order was not wearing a mask. The cook had a mask but it was on his chin. I would go back for the falafel wrap.
