We had dinner at Layla with a party of six, and while the food was excellent, the service was disappointing enough that it overshadowed the entire evening. The biggest issue was that a mandatory 20% gratuity was automatically added to our bill. If you're going to require guests to pay a 20% tip regardless of the experience, the service should at least meet that standard. Unfortunately, it didn't. Our server, Chloe, seemed far more occupied with spending time in the kitchen or attending to guests seated outside than checking on our table. We were dining inside, where the restaurant was nearly empty, yet she would disappear for 10-15 minutes at a time, leaving us with no way to ask for refills, order additional drinks, or get simple questions answered. To make matters worse, our wine glasses arrived visibly dirty. We pointed it out, but they were never replaced. That's a basic service expectation at any restaurant, especially one at this price point. She also volunteered recommendations for her "favorite" dishes, despite us never asking for suggestions--and they happened to be among the most expensive items on the menu. It felt more like upselling than genuine hospitality. The kitchen deserves credit because the food was genuinely very good. But great food can't make up for inattentive service, especially when guests have no choice but to pay a mandatory 20% gratuity. If Layla is going to automatically add a 20% tip, then they should ensure the service earns it--not simply collect it regardless of how poor the experience is. read more

Came here for dinner while staying at the hotel. Service was excellent and nice ambiance as sat outside under a heat lamp. Ordered a wedge salad and the rolls which were very good though $13. We had the scallops and eggplant dish. Scallops were very good with farm fresh vegetables. Eggplant as well was very good. Decent menu and breakfast here also was excellent. read more

We stayed onsite and had breakfast here one morning. The space is quite beautiful inside and there is also an outdoor space on a nice day. We sat inside and ordered coffee, wellness shots, and then some breakfast. Both cappuccinos we ordered were fantastic but they did forget the juice so we had to remind them. My mom tried the avocado toast and I got the huevos rancheros. Both items were quite large and they definitely have shareable portions for breakfast (looking around, we saw the massive breakfast burrito as well). My mom said her avocado toast was next level but my huevos rancheros were ok, the egg was overfried with a bad texture on the bottom and the sauce they used didn't feel super authentic. Overall good breakfast, quite filling, would come back to try other items or asked for scrambled eggs on the huevos instead. read more

Decided to go back again after such a nice time last week. Sorry to say my guests and I weren't so fortunate this time around. We were the first party to be seated after drinks at the bar. ( sub par service in a nice room ) My son decided to order the fried chicken. A dark brown pike of dried up fried chicken arrived within minutes of our order being taken. It was so close to looking burned up that my other guest passed comment on its appearance. It really seemed like some food had been reheated in an oven and served to first evening customer that ordered . Clearly embarrassed my son struggled with his meal and tried to eat parts that he hoped were edible before giving up. When the waiter came to clear our plates and present the bill he didn't ask if anything was wrong Even though most of it went back to the kitchen. It's hard to believe that this was on the menu for $22 and was not cooked to order You would think such a nice establishment would have someone checking the food before it left the kitchen . The restaurant is part of the MacArthur Place Hotel & Spa - very upscale with valet only parking. The decor gives off east coast beach house vibes with white washed interior. The apple salad was one of the best I've ever had. I'm not one who can pick out each ingredient with every bite. The flavors of the fennel and toasted pepitas elevated it from a generic salad with apples. Compliments to the chef! The seared scallops were cooked in bacon fat, so you KNOW it's extra flavorful. The corn purée complemented the scallops very well. Add on bacon bites, and you have the perfect bite. The prawn and scallop mousse-stuffed squid was a bonus. It was a hearty dish. The cod could not compete with scallops. It seems bland in comparison with the celery root and shallot sauce. It was a huge piece of fish - enough for 2 servings. read more

I had the eggs Jeniffer, and my meal was incredible. The selection of beverages during the brunch is amazing. I tried 2, and so did my husband, and we couldn't figure out which one was our favorite because they were that good! The ambiance is very minimal yet chic, and the staff was very attentive and helpful with suggestions on what to eat and their favorites on the menu. I recently tried Layla for a lovely little weekend brunch with a friend. The restaurant is located towards the back of a hotel. Both patio and indoor seating are available, so we decided to do patio given the good weather. On to the food! I ended up going with the B.L.T.A. Pretty much a twist on your standard BLT with the addition of some avocado. The sandwich had a healthy amount of quality mayo (which I appreciate), and candied bacon. The candied bacon added a sweet touch to a well balanced sandwich overall. The side salad was also solid. My friend ended up going with the crispy halibut sandwich which she enjoyed. I give Layla top marks for a beautiful space and friendly wait staff. My sandwich was solid and I'd try other menu items if I was ever back in the area. read more

From the moment we parked and walked in, I had a feeling this wasn't going to be a great experience. We had tried to cancel our reservation due to a member of our party getting sick, only to be told there was a $25 per person cancellation fee. That alone speaks volumes--if a restaurant has to charge people for canceling, it likely means cancellations are common, and they're making up for lost business. This policy left a bad taste before we even sat down. While I understand the need to protect reservations, a bit more flexibility or at least a reasonable window for cancellations would go a long way. Unfortunately, this first impression overshadowed the rest of the experience, and I can't see myself returning nor ever recommending. Upon being seated we had a very sarcastic server which was something I did not enjoy. I ended up ordering a citrus spritz mocktail as the original mocktail I wanted on the menu was out. It ended up being good. This is one of those restaurants where you have to order everything at once per the chef. That is fine however the restaurant was more than half empty and yet we were able to add additional appetizers to our order. We started with multiple orders of the lamb lollipops and I have to say they were good a bit gamey in flavor and definitely needed salt as a garnish. The server had a bit of attitude when some of our party asked if they could hold off ordering entrees to see how full from appetizers they would be. He rudely insisted no as everything needed to be ordered at one time. But then preceded to let us order additional soups. Which made no sense. Our entrees came out and have to say it was disappointing. My scallops were edible everything else in my dish was so heavily seasoned it was inedible. Same for most of our parties food. Our server was no where to be found once our food came out nor did we really see any staff. Another member of my party also ordered a citrus spritz and managed to find our server and say it did not taste right. In all my years of dining I've never had a server respond with "what do you want me to do about it". He should've taken the drink and had a new one brought end of story. The attitude was completely unnecessary. The restaurant reminds me of an upscale Hampton vibe. Safe to say skip this place and go literally anywhere else. Layla never disappoints! Today we lingered over a two hour brunch and never felt rushed to order or to leave. The food is always nicely presented. The homemade jams are always a highlight. This place is so close to a 5 star spot, but they cut some corners and the service was subpar. From the start the staff seemed a little confused and gave us the wrong menus, they then were not sure if they had certain items. The juices were not fresh and came in a container. We ordered the pastries to start as it seemed like a nice sampler, but they never came. Now even with all these issues the food we did get was very good. I got the chilaquiles which was delicious and had some great flavors. My wife got the breakfast burrito which was also very good. The coffee was freshly brewed and was a nice roast. The atmosphere itself is very nice and has some great natural light. The restaurant is in a higher end resort and has a great little bar in the same common area. My fiancée and I had lunch at Layla in Sonoma today, and it was an incredible experience from start to finish. The food and atmosphere were fantastic, but what really made our visit memorable was our waiter, Christian. This was our second time coming and fortunately for us we had Christian both times. He was friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming without ever being overbearing. He took the time to answer our questions, offered great recommendations, and made us feel like valued guests throughout the entire meal. It's clear he takes pride in providing exceptional service. I was extremely excited to take my grandparents here for a Sunday brunch on a warm morning. Pulling into the driveway of the MacArthur Place, it gave off a vibe that we were about to experience a mind-blowing and luxurious brunch. After being able to avoid valet parking with my grandparents' handicap placard, we made our trek to Layla at the end of the hall of the main building. The decor and vibe of the interior was homey yet inviting which made us even more excited to see what was in store. We were seated relatively quickly down in the garden/fountain area. Unfortunately, this was the only time we were dealt with swiftly. We ordered drinks (coffees and one cocktail) and our food but what we were not prepared for was the waiting game. With the drinks, they came out in a timely manner. For food, we waiting over thirty minutes to get our dishes which included the Crispy Halibut Sandwich, Eggs Jennifer with added smoked salmon, and two orders of the Buttermilk Pancakes. While I'm seriously not one to complain about matters about timing, it was just a bit infuriating because my grandparents were complaining that they even noticed that other tables that were sat later than we were (including another party of four) and had received their food pretty quickly while we were waiting without acknowledgement from our server about what the delay was or when we could expect our breakfast. When it came to the quality of the food that was finally delivered, we were sorely disappointed that it didn't match up to the quality of the ambiance and standard we would have expected from a place as expensive as the MacArthur Place. My halibut sandwich was sad and bland in flavor. It truly just felt as if I was eating bread with something hot in the middle of it. When it came to the pancakes, we were all surprised that this place that seems to boast luxurious amenities can't even give out real maple syrup with their pancakes and instead settled with the cheap fake stuff. The smoked salmon that we added to the Eggs Jennifer was also disgusting as it tasted fishier than one would hope to find their smoked salmon. Overall, this was really a disappointing meal that we had to push ourselves to swallow. For a hotel that charges nearly $1000 per night, one would hope and assume that the quality and service of their restaurant would match the price point. We probably won't return for a little while but hope things do improve for other guests and patrons. read more

What a beautiful property! We made a reservation for lunch, but their brunch menu was actually still being served. We ended up ordering the Smashburger, Chilaquiles's and mimosas. Everything was great. The staff was great. The indoor dining area was beautiful. It is on the pricer side, but it is inside a luxury spa and hotel so we expected the pricing to be on the higher end. We do want to come back and check it out when the weather is warmer the patio area looked beautiful but all the patio furniture was up for the winter. As a heads up, it's valet parking only so if you don't want to deal with that, park on the street and walk onto the property. read more

Valentine's Day set menu dinner 2025: The yay: The appetizers were fantastic. Crab cake was stuffed with (gasp) lots of actual crab meat. Carpaccio was thinly sliced and fresh without a hint of fishy smell or taste. Filet minion was tender and well cooked. Sauce for the fish/lobster dish was nice but felt it was could have used a a carb (pasta or grains) to complete the dish. The nay: the service was slow. Got seated over 30min past reservation time. No drinks or server came to take our dinner orders for 30min after being seated. Dessert trio was the weakest of the meals: the ice cream was sour, the mousse-like component was sweet, and the chocolate cake was bitter. Each was meh in itself and did not complement each other. Layla is tucked away in the gorgeous MacArthur Place Hotel. It's a spectacular property and less than a 15 minute walk from Sonoma Square. We had our dog so we sat on the patio and all of the staff were so friendly to him. We were served a delicious amuse-bouche of yellowtail hamachi that melted in your mouth. All of the starters were super tasty, including oysters with perfect mignonette. We ordered drinks at the same time as our appetizers and they came out after we finished them which was really the only con of our evening. As the sun went down, the twinkle lights came on and the Layla team was quick to turn on heaters by request. We loved the duck and tortellini and the dessert was spectacular. After we finished our meal, we ordered another glass of wine so we could relax and enjoy the scenery. Loved it here and will definitely come back the next time we're in Sonoma! read more

This is a beautiful restaurant inside the hotel. I had high hopes, but was disappointed. We were seated quickly. Unfortunately, that was the best service we received. We sat quite a while before anyone came to our table to take a drink order. We were finished with our drinks and waited again for our waiter. I think they should have more training for wait staff. Our brunch order was taken, the wait wasn't too long. We received our orders, everything looked good. Unfortunately, one order had to be returned because the poached egg was hard. I had the avocado toast. It was a sliced avocado with no seasoning or flavor. A bunch of lettuce was on top with little dressing. The pastries were good. I could have understood the poor service, if they were super busy. Unfortunately, there were only 2 customers in the restaurant. Best smash burgers!! Yes, the smash burgers are great and I've been there many times enjoying them with friends. This particular visit was awful in regard to service. We must have had 4 or 5 different people serving us, no consistency. We received the burgers on a dessert plate with no room for the extra salad and fries we ordered. So we asked for bigger plates. We had to ask for serving spoons for the salad. Then, I mentioned to one of the servers that it was my friend's birthday- not a word from her. Did we want dessert? I thought at least a scoop of ice cream with a candle but no!! We ordered their deconstructed cheesecake which we would share. Had to ask for 3 plates and we were charged for the dessert which was fair I suppose as it was $13. But nothing whatsoever regarding my friend's birthday. 90% of restaurants will always try to celebrate a birthday if they are advised. BEST breakfasts in Sonoma in the most beautiful setting (both inside and out with lots of charming, comfortable spaces)! 5-star breakfasts, hands-down. Their breakfast offerings are always perfectly executed - whether you want pancakes, traditional egg breakfast with crispy potatoes, omelettes, avocado toast, Chilaquiles, Strauss yogurt with house-made granola, etc. They are very consistent with the food quality and lovely presentation. Every breakfast dish is absolutely great, with lots of excellent sides to create your own dish. Prices are totally reasonable considering Layla is connected to the MacArthur Place hotel. Their customer service is warm, kind, professional, and attentive. We have so many favorite servers (Mingma, Monsae to name a couple) we always look forward to dining in ... plus we can walk to breakfast, which is a bonus. Coffee is strong, lots of great teas and mimosas, bloody Mary's, Micheladas, and cold pressed juices. Go enjoy an excellent breakfast at Layla! Laylas was definitely a beautiful restaurant. However their cancellation policy seems a little unrealistic "25 per person". Our server started off the meal nice, but when I obtained a drink that didn't taste like the rest of the tables and I was implying potentially the glass was dirty he decided to challenge me and get sassy. Definitely unnecessary and it made the table a bit uneasy as I never am one to send my food back or complain. The water provided to the table and utensils had an odd smell but it was from the glasses, it was evident that they had been run through the dishwasher and left to sit. As someone who once worked in dining, the smell is too familiar and unacceptable. The food definitely left much to be desired. While appearance wise it looked great, some of the dishes could have used a tad bit more seasoning whether it had been a spritz of lime or even some sort of blend of spices would definitely have enhanced it and made it much more appetizing. When placing our orders one of our attendees who does not eat much asked if it was okay to enter one order and then enter another pending how she felt after the first dish and was told everything needed to be entered together per the chefs request. So clearly you must come with a sure appetite. This was probably my least favorite meal in California of the many we had this weekend. read more
