Had a wonderful experience at Poppy! I have been dining at this locally owned establishment since the 90's when it started as the Fig Cafe! Then the Fig went through changes, remodeled etc, lost some of its charm and Voila - along comes Poppy! The remodeling this time is spot on! The kitchen is now pretty well closed off to the dining room making for a much quieter and enjoyable experience for the quality of the food. The service was awesome, we never felt unattended. Our party of 6 enjoyed everything! I had the Mt Lassen Trout, a huge piece of delicious trout over smashed potatoes. My only complaint was the potatoes had absolutely no flavor, no seasoning at all. But the fish was cooked and seasoned perfectly. My dining companions had the Wild Boar over polenta and also muscles, and we started with the peach salad to share. Overall, a beautiful experience. We have now returned to this spot because it made such a good impression on us the first time. Located in the quaint and lovely Glen Ellen, Poppy boasts such an inviting, homey, and somewhat French ambiance. Service here is incredible and everyone is extremely helpful with ordering and with our party and our quirks. When it comes to food, everything is great! We stated with the pork cabbage envelope every time we've been here and it's a nice light app but probably meant to split between two and not four to six people. The bread here is amazing and so is their ham! For entrees, the steak is incredible and always made to perfection. The chicken is also very good and pretty well proportioned to split in our opinion. Well no wonder Poppy was on Sonoma Magazines top new restaurants of 2025!! My wife and I rarely get date nights these days, so it was a real treat to get out! Walking in, the restaurant has a light airy feeling with... big shocker... poppy art work all over. They have a cool couple dinner option but it includes wine and we don't drink, but our hunger level wasn't that high either. The menu is decidedly French but with a nice California/sonoma county farm to table feel. Any restaurant with a bread course is after my heart, so already there! We had the bread with ham and the duck liver, it was fantastic! We then had the smoked white fish tartine, again amazing. We finished with the Trout! I'm not going to describe every dish for one simple reason, it's all good! One constant theme throughout was balance! The chef is a master at balancing rich savory with tart, salt and acid. Lastly the service was awesome! She was so attentive and thoughtful. She asked how many courses we wanted the food bright out in 2 or 3 courses, she also noticed we had more liver and ham and brought us a bit more bread, without having to put in a full order. Incredible dinner, beautiful cozy space, friendly staff, lively but chill ambiance, in lil downtown Glen Ellen. We were tempted to try the weekday family meal but wanted to try more dishes. Good to know from our neighbor each diner could choose a different app and dessert course. Was nice to have à la carte options and not restricted to a NYE prix fixe. They started us with a lovely amuse bouche as well. We ended up ordering and loving: Bread service with house butter and pâté. Honestly can't go wrong with anything on the acme epic - my fave! Citrus & stracciatella - twist on a classic, fresh and delish Was pretty full at this point but persevered and destroyed the: Gnocchi à la Parisienne - literally the best pillowy gnocchi I've EVER had, the gnocchi of dreams, I didn't even know gnocchi could be like this wow it was so good Truite du Mont Lassen - we love trout and this was on point Dessert we were stuffed but decided to yolo with the Meyer lemon curd arlette (like a thin palmier) which was appropriately light and yummy but nothing to write home about. We easily snagged parking on the same block outside on the street in the tiny downtown. Made reservations online just couple weeks prior. Felt prices were reasonable, especially for wine country. Made reservations for Saturday night since we had family and friends that were here last time but Poppy wasn't up then, and we decided to commit to trying this place out for dinner. Parking can be a bit rough as the back is shared with USPS, and side street parking can be quite busy. By the time we arrived, most of the parking was already gone so we had to park a street away even on a night with plenty of rain. Upon arrival, there's a small bench that's right below a small heater where you can wait. My gf and I decided to head on in a bit early and were able to get seated. The inside had really modern decor and looked to have a capacity of seating 15 parties of 2-4 per group. It was a very large space but it felt very comfy. We ordered the duck liver terrine with bread and butter, chicken dish, trout, and scallops. The entrees were very delicious s the butter and duck liver terrine were so tasty. They had mentioned it was fresh bread but it came out tasting cold. I wish they would have warmed it up for us to eat. We also ordered the escargots which were very rich in flavor and went well with the same bread. The trout dish my gf ordered was very delicious. It was on top of this mash potato gravy and some potato fritters. It tasted amazing. I didn't get to try the scallops but it sounded decent. The chicken dishes were the worst part of our dinner however and why I'm rating it a 4. Despite it being recommended, it was the most confusing dish that came out. The chicken itself was fine but didn't have any taste besides a well cooked chicken. I wish it had some saltiness or savoriness to it because the rest of the dish did not deliver. It's served with this orange colored sauce, pomegranate seeds, and the most bitter red cabbage. The orange sauce was really bland and didn't add anything to the taste, pomegranate seeds were really sour, and the bitterness of the red cabbage definitely did not help. Overall, it was a fine dining experience. Everything was great up until we ate our chicken dishes. Would love to try their other dishes but definitely avoiding the chicken if we were to come back. read more

Enjoyed dining at Poppy! Greeted by a delightful Frenchman from Carcasonne and had wonderful service. The favors and textures of dishes were a delight. Started off with delicious amuse bouche toasts, then fresh bread/butter, asparagus with buratta and a green salad. For entrees, the gnocchi was wonderful and the boar sugo rich and flavorful. We then finished off with their vanilla ice cream topped with a lacy cookie and cheese plate. Needless to say, we're coming again...perhaps on a rack of lamb night. read more

Oh My! Move over Glen Ellen Star - Poppy is my new favorite! The Salad Verte - lovely! The Escargot - exactly right! The trout was phenomenal - crispy skin, beautiful beurre blanc with fresh corn and onion. And the steak au poivre was truly sublime. Peppery and creamy and luxurious. We had the steak tartare and trout. Everything was perfectly executed and well seasoned. The fish was a standout, with crispy skin and the accompanying potatoes and corn were perfect for the season. Don't skip the bread service! They are right across the street from Talisman, which makes some of the best Pinot Noir in the world, and they serve some Talisman bottles at retail price! Perfect pairing for the trout. If you need to do laundry, you can drive over the mountains to Yountville, but for outstanding French cuisine, save your tires some wear and eat at Poppy. read more

I want to chime in on the latest addition that is trying to regain Glen Ellen's former status as a Gourmet Ghetto, and with Poppy's opening, I think we have achieved it. The remodel is good, and the choice of art work is fun. Cameron took just-right care of us. Comfortable chairs, but the place could use a little more sound absorbing. It was just at the edge of loud for me. The food was very good. We started with Pain (bread) service with the Parisian sliced ham and an ultra excellent duck liver pate. It was so much fun, kinda like starting the meal with a picnic. The group then moved on with scallops, gnocchi, and pork loin. Everyone enjoyed their dish. The vanilla ice cream was good, the cookie was better, but the star was the cheese plate. We are very much looking forward to family night which is now Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Check their website for what dish is on what day. BTW the hot set up is to go to the Glen Ellen Inn next door for a Bombay Sapphire martini with a twist prior to the meal. Should any restaurant get five stars? I've only given five stars once and that was to Enclos in Sonoma. Most restaurants strive to perfection rarely do they achieve it. The ambiance at Poppy is modern, comfortable and immaculate. The one caveat I might mention is to request a both when making your reservation. The wooden tables in front of the kitchen engender a different experience. The ceilings are high and the room isn't crowded allowing intimacy and conversation among guests. It was my daughter's 32nd birthday so we brought a cake. The hostess was so kind and enthusiastic when asked if they would provide cake service. " No problem, we would be delighted". The gesture was greatly appreciated but don't overlook the dessert menu! We also brought our own wine, one of my dad's favorites. It's a birthday tradition. The corkage fee is $20 which in my experience is extremely reasonable. This is especially notable in that they have a fine selection of wine by the glass and the best that California has to offer by the bottle. Our waiter, a wine maker in his own right, knows his wine and is glad to discuss your choice. From the greeting as you enter to boxing your lest overs, if any, the service is in the top 10% of what I've experienced in the valley. Knowledgable, friendly, genuine and attentive. Now to the main event, although I would come back just for the ambiance and the service. I'd seen in the reviews notations that you had to pay for bread! But you're not paying for bread you're paying a bread service. Yes I agree they could do better on the bread since Les Pascales is down the street, but the bread is server with a variety of accouterments that make it special. We chose the French ham which I understand they cure themselves which I found a little salty for my taste. But I must caution you only a bite or two or you won't have room for your meal. For the main course my daughter had the short ribs and I had the pork loin. The sort ribs were seasoned and cooked to perfection. I'd say falling off the bone but there was no bone just tender, moist ribs. She allowed her dad a taste ( a small one!) and I concurred with her evaluation. My pork loin was moist, delicious and tender on its own but what made both our entrés a culinary triumph was the mastery of the chef. Both dishes were surrounded by texture, color, sauces and vegetables that made these two dishes memorable. The best in recent memory. In summary we are lucky to have Poopy as a choice in our local cuisines. read more

Three of us came to the new Poppy restaurant, which took over the Fig Café venue, for a birthday dinner. We brought a bottle of wine, which they happily decanted for us. Our group started off with the peach mozzarella and pistachio appetizer. It was very delicious and it was a perfect size for the three of us to start off our meal. We then shared a butter lettuce salad. The lettuce was so crisp and fresh and the avocado dressing was delicious. For our plats, two of us had the short ribs. We both absolutely loved it. It was done in a way that we had never seen before where the meat was braised and the edges were crispy with a flavorful sauce. There was a little side frisée salad on the plate as well. It also came with a small ramekin of potatoes, which were so delicious. That entire dish was wonderful. The third-party in our dish had the Lassen trout, which was a good sized portion. It had pinkish flesh. The price for that dish was appropriate I think. However the price for the short ribs, I believe, is overpriced. We ended our dinner with coffee and chocolate mousse. They brought the mousse with a small little candle, lit on it for the birthday girl. The mousse was actually inside of a pastry shell which I didn't really care for, however, the actual mousse was smooth and very tasty. I'm just not a big fan of the pastry outside of it. Very underwhelming. For over a hundred per person, on our anniversary, nothing special. We were so close to the two tables on either side, we could all not only hear each other's conversations, we had to try not to knock plates off while leaving. Food, good but not any more. I called prior to ask about possible dietary changes to a couple menu items and was assured it wouldn't be a problem. Not only did they forget/not notate it, the chef wouldn't manipulate to make anything non-dairy. So pork chops was the only dish available. Poppy is one of our favorite places. The menu is on the small side but in a good way - only fresh, high-quality local ingredients are used. The food is french but not overly heavy and always delicious and beautifully presented with seasonal touches. The atmosphere is calm yet not stuffy, the seating is comfortable and even when the restaurant is full, it's not too loud. My wife and I recently had another terrific meal at Poppy. The newly renovated dining room is warm and inviting, especially if you get a booth. The menu isn't large but everything we had was excellent -- duck pate; pork tenderloin; pommes frites; their homemade, thin-sliced ham (appetizer); and their OMG, not-to-be-missed homemade butter.
