Cute dining room

Could this be my new favorite restaurant in the North Bay? Yes, yes it could. In a cool old house just north of downtown, Chan Chao is an inviting space, with multiple rooms that gives it an intimate feel. Staff are super friendly and welcoming. The food is the real star here, though! We got pumpkin curry, spicy eggplant with chicken, tofu larb and shrimp pad Thai. Every item was fresh, hot and bursting with flavor. Portions are generous and prices fair. If only they had beer...... Run, don't walk, to Chan Chao, you won't be disappointed!

Curry chicken, noodle fish, salad rolls, fried tofu, egg rolls,

Delish. Do nice to see this old building looking so lovely My daughter really enjoyed her birthday dinner here. She had yellow curry chicken and declared it the best ever! Made two full meals for her. Hubby n I are the vegetarians and we also loved our meals. Pan fried noodle w veg the hubbs got eas nice. Could use a few more veggies. I went to appetizer land. Salad rolls which I didn't notice had shrimp in allergic to, and they didn't mind switching them right out. Crisp egg rolls and and fried tofu (which wAs very different than the tofu in my husbands noodle dish bravo on that!) I shared were nicely done. And the sauces . . . because let's be honest sauces are everything, were very nice and not the usual pedestrian stuff. They care about food here. And honored our beloved vegetables. The service was quiet and pleasant. Every table here looks like it's a best table.

Spicy eggplant

The flavors are a cut above. The best Thai in Petaluma. We loved the spicy eggplant and the larb. The "mild" was definitely spicy enough. The atmosphere is cozy and comfortable-- you are dining in an old house, but in a good way. Because there are a couple different rooms, it took a while for the waitstaff to wander over and see us. But we were good with a laid-back meal.

Everything was very delicious! Cute dining place. Lots of patron. Food was served fast and everything we ordered was superb! Highly recommend this place when you're in the area.

Green Curry

Excellent Thai food, and great service. All the veggies were very fresh and cooked to perfection. We enjoyed the spring rolls, the vegetarian Prik Khing, green curry, Jasmine rice, sweet mango sticky rice for dessert, and Thai milk tea. The seasoning was spot on - eggplant in the green curry was exceptionally tasty - best I've ever had. Portions are generous enough to take home leftovers. Set in a Victorian house, there are several inviting dining areas.

Tom Yum soup

This Thai restaurant is wonderful. I read reviews here and decided I had to give a try. Oh my goodness. I only ordered a small Tom Yum soup and was very happy with my choice. I also ordered a Tom Kha to go for tomorrow. Cute place inside an old Victorian house. Dining rooms split up but it works nicely. The menu is limited but clearly has all the most popular dishes. Next time I want to try their Pad Thai. I'm pretty picky about my Pad Thai but wanted soup tonight. The soup is so flavorful. Loaded with chicken, onions and mushrooms. I'd have been happy with less than half the chicken. But very happy regardless. The disclaimer on the menu caused me to be mindful of the level of heat. lol So I ordered mild. Then I added chili oil. Haha. I'm a lightweight but could have easily ordered mild on the soup. The staff is very kind, friendly and engaging if you like not if you prefer not. Can hardly wait until next time.

Came here after a long afternoon of paintballing and it was such a memorable experience! Good: - Super cute ambiance - there's a stuffed bear on the wall and heart origami, how much better could it get? - The staff are incredibly nice - The khao soi was really good, good balance of sweet and savory, and the special curry with sticky rice blew my mind. Felt healthy too - Good value for your money! Good portion sizes Bad: - Food does take a little bit to come out (15 min or so) but it's not a super bad wait Overall this was a super great experience and would come again.

Walking in didn't know what to expect being in a remodeled 1900's home. Our server greeted us immediately and sat us in the window in front. Ordered the lab with chicken which was excellent and the spicy basil fried rice. We ordered both dishes spicy, which was the second most spicy and was plenty for me but I could see it being too much for most. Also ordered Thai ice coffee, I think it was $7. Well worth it as it was delivered in a beer pint glass, not a small cup as with most other places. We will definitely be back!

Pra Ram and the most delightful note.
Jess M.

Best Thai spot in town (coming from someone who grew up in a city with endless authentic Thai restaurants-yay diversity!) Can't go wrong ordering the Pra Ram and the curry here. They also know how to win customers over with their cute doodles. My daughter loves ordering from here for this reason.

Pad kra pow basil

Absolutely loved our visit to Chan Chao. The ambiance is so charming. Like you're in someone's home. The service made you feel that way, too. They were so grateful to have us there, though we walked right in at 1100 when they opened. We ordered the chicken pad see ew you and the pad krapow for entrees. And the fried spring rolls for an appetizer. 10/10 for flavor and spice. The pad see ew was perfectly balanced - sweet and spicy. 10/10 for portion size. 10/10 for freshness. 10/10 for temperature (this is important to me!) So so happy we opted for this place. Cannot wait to return! An all-around quality experience. Thank you, Chan Chao!

Ask the Community - Chan Chao Thai Restaurant

Do they serve wine or beer?

I know that my wife ordered coffee and I ordered Thai iced tea and there was no alcohol listed on the Beverage list. But I didn’t ask if they also served beer/wine. I’m sorry not to have the complete answer.

I got takeout, so can't say anything about the service. But the food was seriously lacking. As you…read morecan see from the picture, the mango was all brown and looked rotten (this dessert was $11!). And the Tom Kha was super sugary and not all balanced - I had to add lots of lime, salt and fish sauce to make it palatable. It also lacked cabbage and tomato, which are classic ingredients that make the dish. Potstickers were deep fried, not pan fried, and smelled of cheap rancid oil. Definitely will skip this place in the future.

This location seems to be a constantly rotating Thai restaurant…read more The location presents a couple major issues. It's a decent distance away from the downtown core so walking there is less convenient, not to mention you'd be walking along Washington where it can get a little precarious. The second issue is that there's very little street parking and you really shouldn't take a chance by parking in the lot across the street, which technically is only for the shops in the plaza. The parking is so bad that we're hesitant to even order takeout. The food itself is average, though admittedly we've only had a couple items off the menu. Basil eggplant was the best dish we had. Other than it being a bit oily, the flavors were terrific. The chicken larb is okay - not the best. The chicken chunks are too large and I prefer it more ground. The sauce was reasonable though. The pad see ew is definitely one of the worst we've had in town. No wok hei flavor and just overly sweet with only a single soy sauce note. The best see ew in town is at Lemongrass - try them both and I'm certain you'll agree. Lastly, when you order online there are no options for spice level and they do not allow order notes or special instructions. All of the food will come very mild, which isn't a bad thing if you don't like spice. For the rest of us, it's not great. Although it's a bit farther away, we'll definitely be sticking with Lemongrass as overall the food is better and the parking much simpler, plus you can indicate the spice level on the food here when ordering online.

The food and service were lovely. When the check came out, there was a 15% service charge added - a first in many years of coming here and not noted on the menu, which I believe is a requirement or you can ask to have the service charge removed. That in itself isn't a huge issue because we would normally tip 20% anyway. The issue is that none of the staff mentioned the service charge and on the credit card receipt, the suggested tips were still the normal amounts of 15%, 20%, and 25%. If you didn't notice the service charge, you'd leave a normal tip on top of it. This feels a bit disingenuous as most places charging a service charge will reduce the suggested tip options to something like 3%, 5%, and 7%. Please review your receipt carefully if you dine here!

We made a res because of our group size, and we had no issues being seated right away. They serve water vs hot tea, but the water glasses are big and they are constantly refilling! Super good service. We ordered a lot of dishes because we were a group of 8. We called ahead and special ordered jai (also called Buddha's delight) which is a common dish for Chinese new year. It's clear rice noodles with veggies and tofu skin. It was delicious! We also ordered the seafood platter, beef chow fun (small charge for the wide noodles instead of mein), salt and pepper fish, green onion pancake appetizer, Manchurian beef, another veggie platter (I think it was just a deluxe veggie dish), honey walnut prawns, and basil chicken which was not spicy in my opinion. I would rather eat lobster or…read moreartichokes than chicken or green beans, and given the choice I'd gladly eat my body weight in dim sum over basically any other food. That hasn't changed at all for me as an adult! In Sonoma county there was really just one place with dim sum, and lots of people wanted more options. I tried other restaurants with their dim sum adjacent menus, but they were pretty mediocre and mostly focused on fried pot stickers or the occasional steamed siu mai. Once I heard fantasy was starting a true dim sum menu, I knew we had to try it. The day we arrived I was solidly in my third trimester of pregnancy and getting around was a chore, but that wasn't going to keep me from dim sum. We were the only guests the whole time on the day we went there, which was weird to me given how good the food ended up being! Service was great, super friendly and just lovely folks. The restaurant was clean and we'll organized, and the menu was a good mix of traditional favorites and some trendy BAO for the insta. We ordered a little of everything , which to me is why dim sum is so fun. Food came out super fast, and we tucked right in. Surprisingly to me, my favorite dish is one hubs picked on a whim, the spicy won tons. The flavors and textures were on point, and even with pregnancy heartburn, the spice on these things was well worth it. Super delicious. I felt the pandan and black sesame bao were overly trendy for my taste, but I'm sure those who are new to dim sum could see these options as easy introduction into the food. Really good experience here with very tasty food, nice people and quality dishes. I'm still getting over the idea of expensive dim sum because of growing up eating it in SF with low costs in a humble setting, but for this overall experience I felt the prices were fine. I will definitely be back, and eager to try the rest of the items on their menu.
