Tried out Mai Vietnamese Cuisine today and had an interesting first impression. The place was surprisingly empty, especially considering how good the online reviews are honestly, it felt like a hidden gem. The staff were incredibly welcoming and genuinely seemed happy to have me there, which made a big difference in the overall experience. I started with the spring rolls, and they were amazing, super fresh and packed with flavor. I had to share this because it really restored my faith in people. I accidentally left my purse at this restaurant and didn't realize it until much later. I was honestly expecting the worst, but when I called, the owner had safely kept it for me the entire time--everything was exactly as I left it. It's one thing to serve good food, but it's another to show this level of honesty and care for your customers. That kind of integrity is rare and deserves recognition. This is one of my favorite places to eat: take a date, take a friend, take grandma, solo meal. The menu is big but I recommend S6 if you like thin, eat to eat, delicious meat with a rich flavorful broth. The service is always the same sweet, wonderful lady. What a hidden gem! We live in Oakland and get a lot of Vietnamese food, and this place might be better than all of them! The place is very small, and everything is made to order so you will enjoy it best if you are patient, but good homemade food takes time. I loved the Pho, of course, but really was impressed with the beef bulgogi ban mi sandwiches. Fresh bread, delish pickled carrots and radishes, and the beef... out of this world! Mai is now my favorite lunch spot on the way up the Russian River Valley. Yum! read more

Even though it's officially spring now, the weather has still been cold. It's definitely been PHO type of weather. Perfect remedy to combat the coldness. We arrived for dinner on a Saturday night. The restaurant is located in a nice older plaza in the city of Cocati, a little south of Santa Rosa. Parking was easy and accessible in the parking lot. First impression as soon as we walked in I liked the Vietnamese authentic instruments hanging on the wall. It was cool to see the different types of guitars. The restaurant was simple and more on the smaller/medium size. We ordered a few bowls of pho, vermicellis, spring rolls and hot tea. Everything was rich and flavorful. My Bun Bo Hue was delicious and had the right amount of kick. The hot teas were self soothing. The staff/owners were friendly and accommodating. My boyfriend and I have been coming to this spot pretty regularly for the past few years and the food is amazing every time. We usually rotate between the S1 and S8, I personally really love the spiciness of the S8. The Thai tea here is also really good, it's one of the only places in Sonoma County where I'll order a Thai tea because it's delicious every time. Authentic pho! I've been wanting to try this place and I'm glad I finally came here today. The restaurant was small but was organized, clean, and welcoming. I thought the decorations/items on the wall were very interesting! We ordered end the Chinese sausage egg rolls, and 2 medium pho bowls (S1 & S8). All together it was $50 -- great price. The food was authentic & flavorful. I was even able to bring some leftovers home because the portions were so big. The service was great, fast & friendly. We will definitely come back. Food was delicious although it took a while to come out but I'll take that as a good sign. I got the B3 bun bowl with pork and shrimp with 1egg roll. Sooo good I did ask for some extra sauce to put in it, I devoured the whole bowl. My friend got a bowl of pho and said it was good. They let us try the spicy broth before deciding and I really liked the spicy broth but it had a fish like flavor to it so they decided on the regular broth. It is under new ownership so don't expect the table side peanuts lol. And tbh with the prices being a bit high I was expecting bigger portions but either way we enjoyed our meals. read more

My top favorites: Bun Bo Hue!!! Avocado Sahke and fried wontons. Today I tried their fried wontons for the first time and I was shocked because I'd always dismissed it on the menu before based on the name since at most chinese restaurant this just means the wanton strips only. Well...now I wish I knew about this all along. The flaky crisp of the skin, tenderness of the filling and the sweet and savory sauce was to die for. Good service and tasty food. For $20 you can get a pork (any meat) and noodles or rice with a skimpy egg roll, which makes it a "combo". While it's tasty, it's a small portion that leaves me wanting more food. So if you get that extra food, and something to drink, you'll be paying @$35-40 per person here. Stopped in cause I had an itch for healthy Vietnamese food. I was feeling under the weather so I grabbed a Pho (S5) and I've never had Chinese Sausage Spring rolls so I wanted to give it a try. The server was Korean and was kind to offer Kimchi with my partner's Bulgulgi dish. He rated it a 7 out of 10. The Tai Tea had more milk than tea, so I requested more tea, which she was happy to do. The service was great and made my experience better than I expected. The ambiance had musical instruments on the wall and an old vintage wooden phone near the door. A salt mine in every meal. My daughter and I ordered the barbecued beef and the pork stir fry through GrubHub. Both meals were inedible because they were loaded with salt. I don't mean just a bit oversalted; I mean so much salt, it was like someone had dumped a salt shaker in the food. In addition, the stir fry was so full of liquid, it was like soup. The vegetables were overcooked and the pork was tasteless. Neither of us could eat our meals. If just one of our meals had been oversalted, I would have chalked it up to a particular entree, but since both were so salty, does that mean the chef (if they have one) must not be able to taste salt and therefore everything is going to be dangerously salty? I'm not going to risk it, and I recommend that you avoid this restaurant. We composted our meals, though I worry about adding that much salt to the compost heap. Update: Lin from the restuarant called and apologized. She said they have a new cook and she will make sure this never happens again. That's excellent customer service. Not really sure what ethnic this place is. Name suggests Vietnamese, but menu has Korean dishes and inside decor reeks of Japanese influences. It was busy for an afternoon. Had the small pho. It was small! Probably the smallest "small" I've ever had. Not much ingredients in such a small bowl. Flavors were ok like from a soup packet. Lady server was nice. I was so disappointed the last time I went to Mai's. My husband and I have been frequenting this restaurant for at least five years and drive down from Santa Rosa. This last time the broth tasted really watered down - not fragrant at all. And the meat portion was so so so small. Like five pieces of super thin poor quality steak. I'm not sure if there are new owners or what but something is different. We'll give it a try again but if the quality is poor again, we'll just stick to something more local. read more

Meat portion was really small and was pretty rubbery, i dont know if thats from a cheaper cut of meat or something. No issue with the noodles. I continue to love this place. I was not feeling well today. It was cold, gray and raining. I'm also getting over a cough. I went to my place of comfort (Mai Vietnamese) for a bowl of pho. Isat outside because of my cough. I think the fellow taking the order remembered me because he brought me a cup of hot water and chop sticks without having to ask. I have been sick with a cold/flu at home the past few days and wanted some pho as it's easy to eat and I can just slurp the soup and noodle down. My first order was placed on Aug 4- I ordered the chicken pho with rice noodles and veggie spring rolls. Soup was lukewarm, taste was not bad, fresh chicken and noodles. Spring rolls was also good. Aug 5 - I ordered another chicken pho with egg noodles this time and fried spring rolls. I am APPALLED when I opened my soup to find that its COLD. There was a little note that says "Please reheat for best taste". UMMM excuse me? I have NEVER EVER ordered pho (or ramen or udon for that matter..soup is always piping hot) to go and the soup is COLD. First time for everything. Here I am with my sore throat and my cold soup. I will never order from here again. The laziness and lack of regard for customers is a turn off. read more

My bride, daughter and I went to Mai's for the first time. We're in Petaluma. Cotati is 10 mins way from our place, the same as Petaluma downtown. Every Vietnamese restaurant we visit has it's own style. For me, Mai's food style was light and clean. I had the tea, which was good and served in a great mug. Great for coming out of a chilly night. Next were the Spring Rolls. "Soft rice paper rolls with vermicelli noodles, lettuce, mint, prawns and pork. Served with peanut hoisin sauce." (From the website). I have not add the pork addition. The whole package blended together and the peanut hoisin sauce was a new wrinkle that I liked a lot. The Vermicelli BBQ Pork exemplified my "light and clean" description. The pork was very thin and the vermicelli simple and the light, vinegary sauce delightful. I almost couldn't get enough. We finished with fried bananas and honey, which got positive reviews for "warm and crunch." A tasty treat on a cold Thursday night! read more

For the area, I think it was pretty good, but being in the Bay Area and SoCal, I've of course had better for cheaper. It seems that even during COVID, the restaurant is doing indoor dining. Being the only patrons that were there, we decided it should be ok this time, but we still wore our masks inside when we weren't eating anyway. DECOR: First thing my group noticed and kept commenting on was how much we liked the instruments along the walls - pretty cute and unique. PRICING / FOOD: I only ordered egg rolls (which they also called lumpia). It was ok.. but it was pretty expensive just for 3 ($8.95). You could tell that this place definitely up-charged on everything, probably due to COVID, but not sure what they were priced at before.. Their pho for a small or medium was already like $11.95- $13.95. Mostly everyone in my group that ordered the pho felt like it was a decent portion. The side ingredients were also really fresh looking, which was nice. SERVICE: I thought service was good, but being the only patrons there at the time, I would certainly hope so, haha. The waitress was really nice, but if you're looking for a place that is "authentically Vietnamese," just a heads up that they are not exactly Vietnamese (or at least, they didn't speak it). The waitress also didn't seem to know what exactly was on the menu when saying the order item in Vietnamese and asked what the number order was instead. Not a big deal though. One of the annoying things that bothered my group was the amount of flies that kept circulating. We couldn't even eat our meals in peace. Literally one pair of flies hit us and landed on the table mating... That was seriously disturbing. The workers saw all of us attempting the swat away the flies, but honestly I don't think they knew how to help that, so they just left it alone. Anyway, I wouldn't say my experience was the best, but it definitely wasn't the worst. For the area, I'd say it's a pretty good Vietnamese food spot. My friends and I decided to take the day to visit the Russian River to celebrate a birthday. Since we live about 2 hours away, we stopped off for lunch and came across this cute restaurant that offered indoor dining during these covid times. I was somewhat surprised seeing as most restaurants are recommended to have outdoor dining, but since our group of 5 was the only party in the restaurant, we took our chances. **We continued to wear our masks inside and only took it off when our food arrived.** Pho in the summer time? Why not! You can never go wrong with it; it's just that satisfying! I am pretty basic when it comes to pho; ordered S2 Pho Tai w/meat on the side and no onions. Two others ordered the S1 Pho Dac Biet in a medium and large size. The others ordered crispy spring rolls and a vermicelli bowl. The portion sizes were fairly reasonable, which we were all able to finish in 20-25 minutes as we had to make a reservation time. The pho broth was piping hot and cooked my meat quickly when I dipped it in. We were each given some hoisin and sriracha sauce in a dipping dish. Overall, the food was satisfying and it fulfilled our hunger needs before an afternoon of drinking! :P The bathroom was clean, the service was very accommodating, but the only thing that put a damper on the meal was the number of flies attacking our food. The restaurant door was completely closed and there were no open windows. I hope in the future, the restaurant finds a solution to minimize the number of flies or set up fly traps so that customers don't have to constantly fan off their food from potential germs. If you're in the area and are looking for a quiet sit-down restaurant off the freeway during these covid times, I recommend visiting this place. read more

The BBQ Pho is the best pho in our area...very rich broth, lots of meat and a tremendous amount of noodles all served piping hot and promptly!! It's a cozy place with plenty of parking near Johnny Java's in Cotati! Easy on an off the 101 freeway! The young waitress is very quick and very pleasant!! read more
