Razan's is great for a healthy, but satisfying, bite. I love their flavor profiles (Middle Eastern -slash- Mexican -slash- funky good stuff) and their legitimate organic cooking philosophy. The place and people just radiate a ton of homeyness and a lot of heart. Their Egyptian falafel wrap is addictively good, as are many of their plates. An order of fries means you get a bursting basket full of oily, delicious potatoes. When I need a quick, simple meal, I get a baby burrito -- actually a pretty hefty wrap filled with the basic black beans, rice, and cheese (plus all the goodies you can load from the salsa/toppings bar). I was really excited to come here! Organic vegetables, brown rice, whole wheat tortillas, quality chicken and grass-fed beef = my kind of place. What could go wrong? Sigh. Ordered the Grilled Chicken Burrito and Grilled Beef Burrito, after a whole lot of effort. Either the girl behind the counter was really shy or didn't understand what I was saying but after trying to ask her questions for a couple minutes, someone else finally came up and asked what i wanted. I try to avoid sour cream and cheese, so I asked for some veggies or even lettuce, but she said she couldn't do it. To avoid taking all the calories out of my burritos, I decided to leave them on. When I asked for a little extra pico de gallo (tomatoes, onion, chilis salsa) on the burrito, she added about half a table spoon. Despite the skimpiness on the salsas, the burrito was still large, filling, and made with quality ingredients. The meats themselves were tasty and seasoned well, and the Beef was grilled fresh upon ordering. But because the large quantities of flavorless rice and beans - the burrito was bland on its own. I salsa'd and squeezed lemon on every bite. Ingredients - 5 stars Food - 3.5 stars Service - 2.5 stars price - $10 for a large burrito (not at all cheap) I live a block away so I'll be coming back to try one of the falafal wraps/burritos everyone raves about and that I can swing for a more reasonable $8. read more

I wish all places were like this!! I would eat here all the time and go back again and again and again!! I went in last night for my birthday and the staff was great, the food was amazing, and they gave me free quacamole!! My favorite is the house salsa. LOVE! Everything is very fresh and tastes great. I want to try everything at least twice!!!! I reccommend you get it to go unless youre alone because its a small place. Totally worth it though. This place used to have hearty portions and pay attention to detail but the new generation of kids working here are just rushing everything. Changing my review from 5 to 3 stars because the "burrito" was missing the avocado I was charged an extra 2.50, the baklava was missing from the bag, costing me the gas and inconvenience of going back, and when I finally went and came back to my cold and dry "burrito," there was very little cheese, little sour cream, and no avocado or guacamole. There was alot of rice and beans and they were stale and overcooked, hard and chewy. The entire deal was devoid of olive oil which is what Shadi used to put on them, and the lavash was the only thing satiafying. All in all for a drink, chips, and the burned chicken wrap I paid over 20 dollars! You have lost my business, man, and I am sad to see you go. read more

I'm saddened to read all of the frustrating and downright awful experiences that people have had here... In my own experience, the service can be a little cold, but for the most part things have been fine. Putting aside service issues for a moment, though, I reallllly like the wraps here! My favorite is the Lebanese wrap with lentils, rice, tabouleh, tahini and probably some other good stuff, too. Plus, the green sauce from the self-serve area really makes the wrap spectacular! The sauce is kind of lemony, with cilantro and...parsley? I don't know, but it is delicious. It's not like anything I've ever tasted before, so I wouldn't compare it with your average salsa, although they might call it "green salsa" themselves. Whatever it is/is called, I would buy it by the bucket-full to keep in my fridge, I like it so much. Plus, I like the rickety second floor with the counter looking out the window! This may sound weird, but I feel like a bird sitting in some eaves when I eat up there. Anyway, I do believe the food is good, so I hope that Razan's improves its customer service. For some reason I always struggle to find quick, healthy, later evening food options in Berkeley. Then I remember that Razan's exists! Thank god. This place is the bomb. They serve up everything from fat burritos with perfectly cooked chicken and beef to shawarma and kebab. A perfect place for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. My favorite dish is the super combo burrito (a great, healthier alternative to other Downtown Berkeley burrito options). They also have Guayaki yerba mate which is basically my favorite beverage on the planet. This place is super responsive, and gluten- and vegetarian-friendly. The food is delicious, and the online ordering system is very convenient. We paid a total of ~$400 for catering services to a special event. We had a party of about 15 people, and the amount of food turned out to be more than enough. A wonderful and fabulous place to get lunch when you're feeling mediterranean-y. Their mediterranean wraps are amazing. I usually order the Egyptian wrap with falafel, greens, tahini, and hummus. It's one of the more reasonably priced items on the menu (about $7). They also serve burritos and other Mexican-style faire, as well as plates full of tabuli and hummus. You can feel good about buying from them too: fully organic and free trade! All their utensils and ware are compostable too. The only downside about this place is that is SMALL. Not good for groups larger than 4. Most people seem to stop by, order to go, and promptly leave so they can have some circulating air and space to enjoy the food. When it's the lunch rush, the orders can take awhile. But you can plainly see why b/c they are cooking everything right in front of you in the smallest kitchen known to man. But those factors don't stop me from eating there at least once a week. read more

Great casual spot - place your order and they call out your food when it's ready. Fun experience because a group of 7 of us sat upstairs, and the people working there saw us go upstairs and called up our orders to us to the balcony above. They knew what we had ordered and were friendly and speedy all the way. Large portions of fresh food - I ordered a fruit smoothie and the vegetarian couscous plate and was happily stuffed. This was the second time that we visited Razan's and unfortunately this experience wasn't as positive as the first time. First, the positives. The veggie burrito is delicious and full of fabulous veggies of all colors, tender brown rice, and a tasty and healthy wrap. The prices are fairly reasonable given the location and cashier is friendly. Here are the constructive parts. The chicken burrito is flavorless. The salsa almost imperceptible in the burritos. Either the cook and the order taker don't know what they are doing or they just don't care. We asked to have no sour cream on my chicken burrito and sure enough I had sour cream. My partner asked to have no cheese on his wrap and guess what? He had cheese on his wrap. He had to disembowel the burrito to remove the cheese just so he could finish eating it. Most folks probably wouldn't care about that sort of thing, so I can see what Razan would have a pretty high rating. However, I don't know if I'll be back. read more

I really hate to give a poor review to Razan's. We've enjoyed them for years. Organic, quality ingredients, reasonable prices. A little slow in the kitchen, but in the past it has been worth it. Twice lately we've had inferior experiences. Most recently, my partner ordered the salmon. It arrived not-fully-cooked. They said "that's how we cook it," but it was cold and red in the center. (If that's how you cook it, expect a visit from the Health Department!) They put it back on the grill -- for 10 more minutes, until it was dried out and almost inedible. Almost as if they were angry that we sent it back for more cooking and wanted to "show us." Other food was fine (I got the steak wrap), but this was just not acceptable. (Also, incidentally, their menu board says they serve decaf coffee, but they told me they don't serve it, and didn't seem to understand me when I suggested they might want to remove "decaf" from the menu board. They told me to go next door to the other restaurant owned by the same people; but they were out of decaf, and weren't about to make more for me. Peet's on the corner took care of me. Small thing, but if you don't serve decaf, you shouldn't say you do.) read more

Definitely a go-to restaurant for Middle Eastern food around Berkeley. I recommend the chicken shawerma wrap with a side of baba ghanouj. However, there are plenty of other choices and I'm sure none of then would disappoint. The owner is very friendly and he personally made sure we got our food, after I pointed out that we hasn't received something. This place has been around for a long time tho' for some reason I just don't go here much. Today, while experiencing a minor miracle (see my Parking Control Officers review...), I ran in here to get a quick and healthy lunch (get change...) and I was very pleasantly surprised. The food is organic and lots of it can be vegetarian. I did not notice if there are any raw or vegan items, tho' I think my lunch constitutes vegan. I ordered an "Egyptian Wrap". Why it's called that, I have no idea (are falafels and tahini Egyptian?? I always assumed they were Middle Eastern, but somewhere further east... Anyway, the falafel, tahini, avocado, lettuce, tomato, and some sort of spicy sauce were wrapped up in a whole wheat wrapper and it was $6.75 and very well proportioned. It was wrapped really well, too. There is nothing worse than taking a first bite and having everything squirt out the other side or ease out of the encasement leaving a big pile of gooey filling in the foil. Maybe it's just me. This probably doesn't happen to my fellow Yelpers... Anyway, they make fresh juice, the people are very friendly, the service is fast, ingredients are fresh. The only rough patch is parking anywhere near there (generally). Walking or riding bikes is a better way to go when headed to this part of town. Razan's is a small, hole in the wall that feels very comfortable and quaint. I personally enjoy eating my food on the second level with a good book in hand. They have delicious, vegan-friendly wraps that taste pretty wholesome. They have an extensive menu of wraps, burritos, plates, smoothies and side dishes. I have tried the Jordanian wrap and the Egyptian wrap, both of which taste wholesome, fresh and are very filling. I've also had a banana smoothie, which hits the spot-especially on a warm day. As a BCC student I find their prices to be affordable and worth while, thought definitely not something I could afford daily. read more

We have been to Razan's several times, ordering burritos, but this time it was Saturday night and we splurged. We ordered the snapper plate at about $15. It was great. The snapper was fresh and perfectly cooked. They served it with both brown rice and some of the best French fries I've had and a salad -- all on the same overflowing plate. We also got a salmon wrap that was OK, but the tahini sauce and hummus overpowered the subtle salmon flavor. We also got an order of guacamole that had more lime flavor than avocado, but we enjoyed the blue chips it came with. While the food is good and the staff are friendly, the small space feels too crowded. I felt like I was always bumping into other patrons. The counter where you order is cluttered, and you serve your own filtered water out of a faucet in the middle of the place. Food-4 stars, atmosphere-2stars. read more

This is the greatest middle eastern burrito place ever! It is a hole-in-the-wall, but it has outdoor seating, and two small seating areas inside (upstairs and downstairs). There is never anyone upstairs, so I like to sit up there and people watch. I was surprised by the cleanliness of this place, too. You can watch them cook the food and how they handle the utensils. The service is fast, great variety of food, and tons of extras like cookies, crackers, or other desserts. The burritos are big, so it's worth the $6-$9. I used to love this place but lately haven't been feeling it. It's a bit pricey for what it is, but I used to think the great organic ingredients and the great service made it worth it. Lately, my experience there hasn't felt worth it. I've seen them get orders wrong two of the last three times I've been there. They completely screwed up my friend's burrito. The next time, they gave me black beans instead of the pinto beans I ordered (important for my particular digestive system) in my burrito (I ate it anyway). Then this last time, I got a salmon burrito, which ended up being kind of a disaster. I asked for pintos and at least they told me they were out of them, so I again settled for black beans. However, it was way overstuffed with rice, and it had that overcooked thing that happens to tortillas (a bit crispy on the outside but too moist inside, and then it just falls apart). So it didn't quite close up completely, and since it was wrapped in paper, the moisture that escaped was deadly to the experience of eating it. It just fell apart and the paper was completely stuck to the tortilla by the time I got halfway through it. Of course, I'm the one who chose to eat a burrito at a movie theater, but I've never had a problem eating a burrito in the dark (absolutely no innuendo implied), especially if it's wrapped in foil. With lots of alternatives available, Razan's is not distinguishing itself anymore, which is a shame. read more

This tiny restaurant is very big on flavor. I got the Tofu Plate and was very satisfied with the quality and taste of everything on the plate. The salsa was extremely fresh and not overwhelmingly spicy. My companion got a Chicken Plate and salad, both generously portioned. I really wanted this place to be good, and based on average stars suggested to my girlfriend that we try it. Let's just say I was embarrassed. The staff was a brusque and appeared to be new as they seemed unfamiliar with the menu and had trouble understanding orders (I overheard exchanges with other customers while I was waiting to pick up what I had ordered). Very little room, far too few tables, and awkward positioning meant that on the bottom floor someone's butt would always be in your face. If you go up a tiny staircase in the back barely wide enough for my shoulders there is marginally better seating on the second floor. I'm generally fine with it being a little tight if the food's good, but it simply wasn't. I ordered a beef burrito and found about half of my bites full of gristle or fat. Considering the cost I wasn't expecting anything amazing, but the quality of this meat was probably worse than Chipotle and it was more expensive and out of the way to get there. Although it was not awful, with the shear number of other options in Berkeley for food I am surprised it is still around as there are many better options for Middle-Eastern cuisine. read more

I've been coming to Razan's for sometime. My favorite is the lamb shawarma. The tahini sauce is by far the best tahini wherever there is one. You can just drink it.
