Some of the food was quite delicious, once it was cooked enough. My salmon wasn't completely cooked the first time so it had to go back. The sauteed veggies and guacamole were great. The staff was very accomodating. The place is really small and I don't know how all of those people can prepare food in that tiny space without knocking each other over. But somehow they seem to manage. Red snapper is on the menu and it is also on a list of fish to avoid due to environmental impact. Since I've moved to Berkeley this is my most frequented place. I will never get tired of going here for local and organic quick eats. Prices are just right and the menu is vast. The portions are substantial and I never leave hungry. Since I'm a regular I notice most of the staff seem to stay the same. They are not super friendly with me but are always nice and are quick with my order. If you're into not paying a fortune for a healthy organic meal and don't have time to cook it yourself this is the place for you. This is almost a must for any friend vising me from SoCal. read more

I like Razan's and I like their menu. I like that they are right across the street. I even like that they make the food right where you can see it. I just wish it was a little more affordable, and that it wasn't always so crowded you have to take your food to go. That's a good sign though- they are well loved. Razan's serves mostly Middle Eastern wraps/plates and burritos. (Though, I haven't had the burritos because I'll never order burritos at a place with 'wraps'on the menu). The food is all organic, hot, fresh and rather yummy if you have a hankering for a healthy meal. Good vegan options include the Egyptian Wrap (falafel, hummus, etc: $5.95), Tofu plate (rice, tofu, beans. salsa and veggies: $9.95), Mediterranean Plate (Lentils, hummus, rice, tabuli, etc: $8.95). This is a perfect place to grab a bite before/after a movie. (+) organic, quick and friendly service, freshly made healthy food (-) the drink selection is limited, largely non-caffeinated and expensive (i.e. Santa Cruz organic sodas, apple juice, etc.) The restaurant is very small and somewhat pricey (counter service not table service), but organic with lots of vegan stuff, and a small business so I got to support it. read more

Admittedly, I didn't go to Razan's for the longest time because of its name. I'm not someone who obsesses over my food being "organic". I've accepted the fact that I'm a human being and that I'll die eventually (in probably a slow and painful manner from some disease). Whether the banana I eat is certified "organic" or not probably isn't going to change that fact. Anyway, getting back to the review, I finally tried Razan's a couple weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised. The inside of the restaurant is small, and the menu is quite large (physically and in terms of the number of items). They offer a mix of Mediterranean and Mexican style offerings. I opted for the chicken burrito. It contained all of the usual ingredients (beans, rice, salsa, sour cream, etc.) inside of a wheat tortilla. All of the ingredients were definitely fresh and flavorful. The salsa wasn't spicy, but it still tasted okay. While it doesn't compare to Chipotle in terms of taste, I didn't feel overly full and lethargic after eating it, so I guess that's a plus. I honestly don't know how they deal with their customers though. During the time I was there, one woman spent three minutes trying to decide which type of spinach melt she wanted. Another customer kept asking lots of questions about the salsa there. Yet another customer kept walking back and forth between the two restaurants (they own the restaurant next door as well) trying to decide which one to go to. How do these people handle making important life decisions? Customers like this would drive me crazy, but they seemed to be used to it and didn't seem bothered by it. This will forever have a special place in my heart because it was my first meal at Berkeley after orientation. My family really wanted to go the the famous Great China, but being the rebellious college freshman I was (not), I insisted on finding something else. Seeing that these were the days long ago before my Yelpy food critic self emerged, I chose Razan's based on the very primitive method of walking around and looking at posted menus. Clearly, it was not far before I found something that looked alright (not far being this was right next to Great China when it was at its original location). The setting is indeed like a kitchen, with an open kitchen and a simple, down-to-earth ambiance. The menu has a good selection of various Middle Eastern food with a healthy spin--so Berkeleyan. Although nominally it is supposedly an organic kitchen, the menu dubiously only lists certain ingredients as organic. I was unadventurous and went for the safe-sounding chicken wrap, which was alright. Nothing amazing enough to convince me to come back, and now that I am far less n00by about food in Berkeley, I know plenty of places that in my opinion are way more worth going (for one thing, the greatest Great China trumps nearly everything--should have listened to the parentals). read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants of all time. 100% of their ingredients are organic! If you order fries, you get organic ketchup. If you buy a dessert or a can of bubbly fruit juice, it's organic. The Chicken Schwarma wrap is my favorite. I dined here today and the food was so delicious that I literally forgot my purse in the restaurant! I was so excited to gather my left overs and extra sauces that I left it right there at the table, and didn't even think about it or realize I had left it until after I got all the way home to San Leandro! We called in after, and the super kind staff had already found it and set it aside for us to come back and pick up. After we retrieved it, my purse and all of it's contents remained untouched (including my wallet and phone). I was having sort of a rough day, and that act of genuine kindness really warmed my heart and made me smile. (Thank you guys!) I've been going here for over 6 years now and I love it each time. The staff are very nice and can carry a decent conversation as well. I'm lucky to always be here when it's not busy. So what started out as a total bummer...paying a Berkeley parking ticket, turned out to be a fantastic discovery. Where else can you get a burrito with brown rice? I had the veggie melt burrito and liked it so much that I ended up taking a friend there 2 days later. Yummy goodness. You may feel like you've stepped into John Malkovich's head when you go upstairs to sit & eat, but you have a birds eye view of the kitchen and can get ideas on what to order on your next visit. Excellent place with a good variety of choices of high quality food. Portions are big and prices are very reasonable (even after 15% tips). So far, this is the best value place we could find in Berkeley (from price-to-quality perspective). We live in 25 min walk from Razan's and occasionally go there to grab something for lunch or dinner. I'm a carnivore and can't tell much about vegetarian food there, but I love burritos and shish kebab wraps there. The falafel still gets 5 stars, but the 3 star price is disappointing especially in a college town with so many Mediterranean options. I was driving to pick up food from another location. I wanted a little, inexpensive snack to hold me over, so I drove to Razan's. My falafel took a tad longer than expected, but I was ok with waiting. I ordered three falafel. The service was still just ok, 3 stars. The falafel price was almost $6. Hmm...you mean to tell me that wraps with falafel are only $2-3 dollars more??! Came to this little hole-in-wall spot before seeing Florence and the Machine at the Greek Theater. I seriously could have closed my eyes and ordered anything of this delicious menu! I got the Spinach Melt Burrito and its was pack with yummy flavors and goodness. Although it is small they have some tables out front and a secret upstairs area where you can sit as well. I have been coming here with my family for over 5 years now. Even with an owner change this place is still wonderful. We drive from Hayward just to eat here. I love the upstairs eating area, such a cute spot that focuses on great, homemade tasting food. It's delicious, hearty, healthy and filling food. Grabbing a bite before a movie on a Sunday afternoon, my daughter knows all the funky cheap and cheerful eats around town. We decided to eat on the healthier side, so she took me here. It was overcast and damp and a big bowl of soup sounded perfect. The menu also had lots of wraps/burrito type choices and salads that made it hard to make a decision. But I went with a bowl of split pea soup and kid had the lentil/vegetable soup and we shared an order of hummus with pita/chips. My soup was so delicious (though half way through deliciously slurping it down did I realize it probably wasn't meat free) OOPS..... Oh well too late, and for the most part I only eat chicken or fish. And this probably had pork in it, ugh...but I guess it won't kill me (well I'm still here to write this review) and it was pretty damn good...shoot. I guess I should have asked I usually do, but I got confused with "organic" and must have thought "vegetarian". Epic fail on my part, oh well ( don't tell anyone but it was really thick and tasty....shhhhhh). And our big huge bowl of hummus was enough to share will all the patrons in the restaurant! So along with our big bowls of soup, I'd say we had a super hardy meal for lunch and a good bang for our buck. We got the mediterranean chicken wrap (not sure a/b the name.. but its something like that) which had veggies (tasty fresh zucchini, bell peppers, etc.... not the usual crappy veggies), mediterranean rice, onions, chicken, and tahini. Also tried the super combo burrito w/guac- chicken, beef, rice, cheese, maybe onions.... both were in a whole wheat tortilla which makes it taste so much better. Not worth the time and money. For a place that grandly announces that it's organic, it doesn't really offer any great produce. The ingredients aren't special or interesting. There aren't many vegetables to be had. Like I, a man came in and asked for a wrap with a lot of vegetables in it; yet, there aren't any. They do have a vegetarian burrito but it's basically guacamole, cheese, and beans. There's another vegetable wrap but it's steamed vegetables. I mean c'mon, have some roasted vegetables. Besides the uninteresting menu the wait for food is ridiculous. There weren't that many customers yet the wait for a wrap was way too long. A lot of the customers showed similar distaste. A customer asked if they could add some simple stuff to his wrap and they bluntly told him it would be an extra charge. It felt like the customers were more obliging than the staff. I had an Egyptian wrap: lettuce, falafel, hummus, and tomatoes. It was okay. The falafel was mushy and bland. It did have a fresh feel yet it could've used more ingredients. We were very hungry. I ordered a veggie burrito. My husband ordered the chicken one. My burrito was bland. I mean, no spice. Steamed brown rice, steamed carrots and something green, pinto beans, and a smidgeon of sour cream. The chicken did not seem organic, and his pile of falling apart steamed food was just as disappointing. The respective ingredients, per say, would have been added on at $1 each, I suppose I could have had a miserly dollop of flavor added on if I'd spent $15. "Healthy" should be flavorful. But coming from a country with a large Turkish and Middle Eastern population and the corresponding richness of restaurants, I found this unremarkable (except I'm remarking upon it on Yelp; go figure). For one, where's the flavour? In any kind of wrap, falafel, burrito, the idea is to have a myriad of tastes bursting on your tongue, varying a little from bite to bite. What I had here was...bland. Cardinal sin? I think so, for this cuisine. Second, it's really too pricey for a quick lunch for a student not born with a silver spoon in her mouth; there was no lunch special or anything like that. I came here a little skeptical, but I had a coupon from Chinook book, so I just had to give this place a try. The menu was quite impressive. Wild caught salmon, grass-fed beef, free-range chicken, but I'm vegan so I skipped all that. It was hard to choose, but I ended up going with the tofu shawarma. Oh my goodness, when they fire roasted vegetables, they mean it. Delicious, charred bits on my peppers and onions made me a happy camper. The pita was moist and not so thick to take take of the whole sandwich. Tofu is tofu, but they still cooked it well. The other array of spreads and sauces were fantastic too (I think it also had hummus and tabouleh?). I highly recommend this wrap if it's your first time trying this place. I also had their banana, strawberry, and soy milk smoothie. It was alright. A little loose (could have used some ice cubes), but it was simple and still tasted good. I was happy to see that they don't add any extra crap like sugar to it. My only complaint is the paper they wrap their sandwiches. I could just be an idiot, but I kept biting into it. This place sells both Mexican and Middle Eastern food, which means you can have burritos and shawarmas in one place! Their salsa bar has tasty sauces from both cuisines. Who knew the two form a great pair! One thing I like to do when I come here with a friend is to have one person get a wrap and another person a burrito, and swap a half with each other. It's a cute little way to get the best of both worlds. The workers are very friendly, which is a plus. Razan's is great for a healthy, but satisfying, bite. I love their flavor profiles (Middle Eastern -slash- Mexican -slash- funky good stuff) and their legitimate organic cooking philosophy. The place and people just radiate a ton of homeyness and a lot of heart. Their Egyptian falafel wrap is addictively good, as are many of their plates. An order of fries means you get a bursting basket full of oily, delicious potatoes. When I need a quick, simple meal, I get a baby burrito -- actually a pretty hefty wrap filled with the basic black beans, rice, and cheese (plus all the goodies you can load from the salsa/toppings bar). I was really excited to come here! Organic vegetables, brown rice, whole wheat tortillas, quality chicken and grass-fed beef = my kind of place. What could go wrong? Sigh. Ordered the Grilled Chicken Burrito and Grilled Beef Burrito, after a whole lot of effort. Either the girl behind the counter was really shy or didn't understand what I was saying but after trying to ask her questions for a couple minutes, someone else finally came up and asked what i wanted. I try to avoid sour cream and cheese, so I asked for some veggies or even lettuce, but she said she couldn't do it. To avoid taking all the calories out of my burritos, I decided to leave them on. When I asked for a little extra pico de gallo (tomatoes, onion, chilis salsa) on the burrito, she added about half a table spoon. Despite the skimpiness on the salsas, the burrito was still large, filling, and made with quality ingredients. The meats themselves were tasty and seasoned well, and the Beef was grilled fresh upon ordering. But because the large quantities of flavorless rice and beans - the burrito was bland on its own. I salsa'd and squeezed lemon on every bite. Ingredients - 5 stars Food - 3.5 stars Service - 2.5 stars price - $10 for a large burrito (not at all cheap) I live a block away so I'll be coming back to try one of the falafal wraps/burritos everyone raves about and that I can swing for a more reasonable $8. read more

I went in last night for my birthday and the staff was great, the food was amazing, and they gave me free quacamole!! My favorite is the house salsa. LOVE! Everything is very fresh and tastes great.
