Good South Indian fare in Berkeley. We got the Chicken Tenali Kura Kathi Rolls and the Ulta Vada Pav. Flavors were solid in both. However, spice levels were misleading. The Ulta Vada Pav was a 1/5 spice level but ended up tasting like a 4/5. The Tenali Kura was a 2/5 but tasted less spicy than the Vada Pav

Omg what a find! We were scrolling through Yelp to find a quick post-hike snack when we stumbled upon Pochys. We're so glad we found this place: usually we'd have to drive all the way to Sunnyvale or Cupertino for quality South Indian food so glad to have Pochys close by. The other thing that stands out is that it's not your "standard" South Indian fare like dosa/idli. Here, the menu is inspired by Bangalore grab-and-go food so the emphasis is more on the rolls (which you can get done in a variety of ways). We ordered the Tenali Kura Chicken Roll (2 for $16) which were delicious. I wasn't familiar with what Tenali Kura was (might be a Karnataka thing) but when we tasted it was exactly like what we'd expect to find in someone's house in South India. Very authentic/homemade flavor profile! Shoutout to the owner's 70 year old mom who very sweetly brought our food to us and asked us if we needed anything else. Totally adds to the charm/homeliness of the place. We'll be back to try the Donne biryani soon!

First off -- DELICIOUS!!!!! I had the Paneer with Bagar Rice/Chapati and the flavors were insane. This is not your "basic" indian spot. The food is authentic, absolutely ZERO canned food used, and the spices are blended in house! The owner, Aravind Pochiraju, helped us choose the best meal that satisfied our cravings and hunger. He was wonderful to chat with and conversing with him really made me even more excited to try the food! You can easily tell how much effort he's put into these recipes. The flavors are still lingering on my tongue!!! I was extremely surprised to see the restaurant empty which made me pretty bummed...There's perfect outdoor seating with pet accommodations and beautiful lighting! I was expecting to see more people at dinner time, especially since the food is outstanding. Next time you're craving indian food or you don't know what to cook/eat, go here! I can promise you that they will not disappoint.

Vada Pav

Had some work in Berkeley and decided to stop by at this newly opened restaurant. We went around 1:45 pm. It wasn't busy. It is self ordering. I ordered a Vada Pav. My partner ordered the Chicken Donne Biryani. I loved my Vada Pav. The fried chilli was missing. I asked for it and they obliged. The vada pav tasted amazing. My partner felt the biryani was bland and could use some heat. No raita was served with biryani surprisingly. Overall great experience. Please add some music. Restrooms were clean. Staff were courteous.

Ambiance: Pochys is a no frills casual spot. Its best for small groups (around 4 people) or just totally eating by yourself. There are a few tables outside in case you want to bring your furry friends. Food:I had the Tenali Kura paneer rolls and the Aloo Bonda. The rolls were so flavorful and had a good amount of heat from the chilis.2 of the small rolls was satisfying enough for a small meal. The Aloo Bonda was mildly spiced with what appeared to be turmeric, black mustard seed, and possibly some chilis. The cilantro chutney was a nice accompaniment to the slightly crisp outer layer of the Aloo Bonda. The chutney container was small; I'll ask for more next time. Service: The lady who served our food was so nice and welcoming. Value:I think the 2 rolls for $16 and the Aloo Bonda for $10 was a bit pricey. Other notes: I definitely want to come back to try the other dishes. I've been to many Indian spots in SF and the East Bay but haven't found anything else like Pochys. I'd rate the food 5 stars but the value is 4 stars.

TOO SPICY!!! Please consider having some milder options for the food. Your version of mild is too spicy for most people in the US.

Something I always like to start off with on their menu is their hot chai tea. It's hot and creamy with just the right amount of warm spices on a cold day in the winter. It also wakes me right up. Everything that we've ordered has been delicious, esp. the nimki chaat, dal, and spicy tofu. Their papad is also tasty and great for snacking if you're not too hungry. The service is always great, whether they are busy or not. Food always comes out promptly and they always check upon us to make sure everything is alright. I've spent hours at this place catching up with my friend, even after we're done eating, and they've never hinted at us to leave :) Highly recommend if you're looking for a cozy spot with amazing food and great staff.

For small plates, I ordered samosas, pani puri, and veggie fritters. Loved it all especially the pani puri- crispy shells with chickpeas in them. Yumm! The samosas were good except they were big so one was good for me. I didnt realize their size until it came to our table. One order was two large samosas. Oops. Tikka masala was good but I found it to be more stewy than thick, which is my preference. I like to eat masala with naan and this is when I wished I ordered garlic naan, but I didn't want to over- order. Overall, I'm definitely returning. Place was yummy and the vibe is beautiful and friendly.

We were seated immediately and didn't need to look at the menu too long before we ordered. We decided on pani puri and veggie samosas for apps and tikka masala and butter chicken, rice and garlic naan. I ordered a vegan mango lassi and him a regular mango lassi. The pani puri was ok. I like the crispy, but I wasn't too fond of the filling to be chilled. It also had a slight sweetness to it and it wasn't my favorite. I've had it before, but I don't remember it being chilled on the inside, but what I do like about it what is that? It has a crispy shell when you bite into it. The veggie samosas were my favorites. The butter chicken was kind of bland as well as the tikka masala. It did not stop me from finishing my garlic naan with our dishes but I found myself wishing it was more flavorful. My vegan mango lassi had a taste that I wasn't too fond of and didn't finish it. At the end of the meal, it was more than $100 and that was sticker shock for me. I don't think I'm returning, but the service is friendly.

The chicken tikka masala is a classic and definitely worth getting; it's flavorful and reliably good every time. But what really surprised me was the shrimp curry. I went in expecting the shrimp to be a bit overcooked or limited in quantity, but that wasn't the case at all. The shrimp were actually cooked really well and there was a generous amount in the dish, making it feel like a great value. One thing to keep in mind, rice doesn't automatically come with the curries, so you'll have to order it separately if you want it. That said, we usually skip the rice and go for naan instead, specifically the potato naan and garlic naan. Between the two, you get a really nice contrast in texture. The potato naan is thicker, soft, and fluffy on the inside, almost like a comforting, filled bread, while the garlic naan is thinner with a slightly crispy edge. Make sure not to sleep on the free chai tea, it's easy to miss if you're not looking for it. Off to the right of the cashier desk, there's a little self-serve station with cups, sugar packets, stir sticks, and a large container filled with hot chai. You can pour as much as you want, whenever you want, which is a nice touch and a great way to round out the meal. One thing to note about the atmosphere: there are occasional slow periods where the place can get really quiet, and you might even find yourself as the only table there. It can feel a little awkward in those moments, but it just depends on the time of day. When it's busy, though, it has a much more lively, energetic feel. Overall, it's a solid, low-key spot with good food, a family-friendly environment, and a few nice little perks that make it stand out.

We had prawn biryani, shaptak pork, shahi paneer, chicken vindaloo, lamb tikka masala, aloo gobi, prawn coconut, chicken tandoori, yellow curry dal, garlic and onion naan bread. We ate well and all the sauces, curries and favors were amazing with everything being just what we had hoped. I was especially fond of the shrimp coconut, but the birthday girl loved the spiced up lamb. There were no complaints, which is miracle enough with a big family meal.
