We went to celebrate a 93 year old's birthday. We wanted a place where we could hear each other. We went early- around 6 PM. It was just lovely. We had a round table that was just the right size, which is great for a group because you can all engage with each other easily. The food was yummy! We had shrimp chow mein, lamb tikka masala, saag paneer, tandoori shrimp, garlic naan, and momos. The server was attentive and sweet, and expressed chagrin that it got busy and we had to wait a few minutes for her help later in the meal. We dined at Mount Everest Restaurant for a late lunch, and it was a pleasant experience. While I've dined here before, it was my first time returning after a few years. Both my mom and I ordered lunch specials, and it seemed to be a good value. I especially enjoyed the naan and malai kofta and the salad was a nice side too. I was not a fan of the chana masala, as it seemed to lack flavor and the sauce was slightly watery. I opted for mild level of spice, since I was concerned the meal would be too spicy, but that was not the case. We also ordered some pappadum along with chicken momos to share, and it was an alright dish, although I did think the filling wasn't quite tasty. The sauce was a nice touch, and helped add a small burst of flavor and a mild kick. Customer service was great and attentive and the restaurant was nicely decorated with a cozy vibe. Overall, our meal was enjoyable and I am glad that there was an option to order lunch specials for weekend lunch. Although, I wished some items were more flavorful or spicy. Found this spot while casting about for a spot my friend and I both wanted to try, near my hotel and my last night in town. And Mt Everest did not disappoint. I rarely eat indian food but i was in the mood for this subcontinent's cuisine the other night. I wasn't sure what to order but i went with the butter chicken, garlic naan and the yogurt dipping sauce. All were very very deliciously delightful! My only two complaints are that its a little pricey and they dont give u rice with every order. I didnt realize this so i had to make some on my own, which turned out just fine bc i like brown rice. Walking around the Berkley campus and someone recommended we try Mount Everest. We were seated immediately for a 7pm weekday dinner. ATMOSPHERE: The place felt clean and was brightly lit. It was nearly empty when we went. There is a small (~5 spots) parking lot in the back, so plan ahead to figure out parking as that lot was full. FOOD: We got the chicken biryani and a mango lassi. The biryani rice was seasoned really well, but there were only a few pieces of chicken included, and they tasted under seasoned. Nonetheless I still enjoyed the dish. The Mango lassi was creamy and sweet, just as it should be. Definitely recommend getting one of these! SERVICE: It took a few min for a server to say hello to us despite the place being completely empty. Our order was taken, and it took about 20 min for the food to come out. We also weren't checked up on after this. The restaurant also overcharged us (double) for an appetizer someone in our party got and luckily one of us noticed. PRICE/VALUE: The biryani was $16, which is on the pricier side especially for being around a college, but the portions were large. Used to live near this restaurant and would pass it on my way home everyday. Finally got to try it for lunch one day and my expectations were met. The restaurant is super cute, the decorations make it feel very cozy. The waitress that helped us was also friendly! I got one of the lunch specials and the serving size was definitely worth it. Honestly the most memorable thing was the side salad -- that doesn't mean the other parts of the dish weren't good, but I was most surprised by how good the salad was. You can scan the menu or they will give you a hard menu. We settled on garlic naan, chicken chhoilla, and mather paneer. All were very tasty. The chicken chhoillahad lots of tender chicken and onions. The fennel seed added a nice crunch. There was enough for 4 people. The paneer was also very tasty. We were surprised there were only 4 pieces of paneer. The garlic naan was chewy. Service was unremarkable. We had to waive to get refills of water. I'm late writing this review so apologies to the restaurant! I ordered paneer tikka masala (mild), mixed vegetable pakora, and kheer. Although you may see some brown rice peeking out in one of my photos, I actually cooked the rice myself at home. The food was ready at the early end of the estimated range. The only hiccup was having a little bit of issue communicating who I was to get my order, but I think that was more because my mask was muffling my voice. Pakoras: Pretty good, kind of salty, but not too spicy. Paneer tikka masala: Compared to other paneer tikka masala I've had, it was a bit milder and more watery in taste, not as salty (which could be seen as a good or bad thing according to your tastes). I wish there was just a little bit more paneer, but I always love as much paneer as possible. Kheer: It was alright, not super sweet (unlike if you got something like gulab jamun). This may have been my first time trying kheer and it reminds me of rice porridge of congee. Overall, I thought the food was pretty good even if not mindblowing and it happens to be walking distance to where I live it, so I will probably come back again to try other things on the menu. read more

Mediocre at best, unfortunately. The entrees I ordered (Chicken Tikka Masala and Fish Vindaloo) were surprisingly bland... and really sweet- as if the cooks are adding sugar to the food. The veggie samosas were good, but I didn't like the accompanying sauces, which were also bland and watery. The delivery portions are VERY small and you have to pay for rice separately, which isn't even in a standard paper takeout box, but a small size. The food wasn't overly oily/greasy, though, which is a plus. I won't be ordering from this restaurant again, but maybe it's better to go there in person. read more

As a born and raised Berkeley gal this restaurant was one of the places that has been around so long you never end up trying it because it blends in. I was very glad I took a chance though. The food is pretty good! Entrees are around average price (15-20) and of course like most restaurants you have to order everything individually. Having said that, my favorite dish that they have here is actually a traditional Indian dish: The Chicken Tikka Masala. The price is a smidge high at $15.99 for the portion size, but the food tastes good. I love that they use chunks of boneless chicken breast that are heavily seasoned. They have a clay oven that they bake it in. And the sauce is so creamy. The service is pretty good, but a little rushed at times. And the ambiance is warm and clean, but could use some modernizing. One of the best food in bay area, coming here since 2015 and has never disappointed me. I love the food and the service.

First off, I've had their delivery, which I don't love. I find that portions are small for the price, probably based on the containers. However, the dining-in experience is a lot better. This is at about 3.5 stars. Not for lack of delicious food, but just a little pricey. We paid about $12 for a plate of saag with mushrooms (basically creamed spinach and mushrooms) and it was light on the mushrooms. It was delicious, but that's a lot of loot for a very easy and simple dish not served with rice or naan. The $4 honey naan, was also a little bit of a let down. We however enjoyed the veggie momos and the veggie chowmein which was a huge portion and the chicken pakora. Overall, they deserve that 4 stars as the food is good, it's convenient, the place itself is nice. I do appreciate they highlight kid friendly options for those not familiar with Indian/Nepalese food. I would come again for Indian eats if nearby, but I wouldn't say this is the best Indian/Nepali food in Berkeley. read more

The service stood out to me more than the food, but I still think it's a good option if you're looking for decent Indian/Nepalese cuisine in this part of Berkeley. Came here one night for dinner since I've always heard great things about this place. The ambience is wonderful. The lighting is a bit dark but it makes it feel very intimate. It has a very open layout and is decorated with multiple colored holiday style lights that drape from the ceiling. If you're sitting near the window, the insulation isn't the greatest. It was a bit cold but I really enjoyed the street view from my seat. I was craving for curry so I went for the shrimp curry. Read a couple of reviews that raved about their garlic naan, so I got that too. And, what Indian meal would be complete without rice? Normally I'd just order a side of basmati rice, but the rice pulau looked a little more intriguing. I ordered this along with a mango lassi. Yes, I was being gluttonous that night! Overall, I was pretty impressed. First to arrive was the mango lassi. This is one of my favorite Indian drinks and the one that I had here was no exception to that rule. It was thick and mango-y juuuust how I like it. FYI: They use paper straws here. If you don't want your straw disintegrating into your drink, I suggest you take it out of your cup when you're not taking a sip. The rice pulau and shrimp curry came out next. I was slightly disappointed in the rice pulau. I don't know... I guess I was expecting some kind of Indian fried rice with nuts and veggies? What I got was rice with a little bit of veggies and nuts mixed in. It didn't really change the flavor at all. It tasted very plain. I wouldn't get this again. However, the shrimp curry had a lovely flavor profile. I ordered it spicy, and while it wasn't as spicy as I would have preferred, it still had a nice kick to it. My only complaints about the shrimp curry was that it was super watery and only came with about 8 or 9 small pieces of shrimp. I'm used to curry being thicker and more filling. This needed to be thickened and stirred for a bit longer. Also for $16, I expected a much larger and filling portion. Sadly this wouldn't have even been enough to split between two people. The garlic naan was definitely the star of the show. It was what every glowing review said it would be like. Warm, fluffy, buttery, garlicky, and delightful! I would order this again with no questions asked. I love that this restaurant operates with an open kitchen. They really don't have anything to hide and they prove it. The staff is so sweet and hardworking. I instantly felt comfortable here. This seems to be a popular place with the locals as it was pretty busy on a week night. Only giving this place a 4 because I didn't like one of the dishes. Other than that, it was delicious!!!! The butter chicken was amazing: super creamy, tender, great for eating garlic naan or normal naan with The garlic naan was delicious too. They don't hold back on the garlic. If you like garlic fries, give this a try. Two main dishes, one order of rice, and 2 naans was just the right amount for 3 average sized girls. I didn't like the aloo gobi but that's mostly a personal preference. The butter chicken was amazing and I would honestly just use the naan to shovel it into my mouth. It was that good. Highlight of the dinner: I asked for a container to take home the leftover butter chicken. The server comes back with a small sauce like container. I wasn't sure if all of it would fit because it looked like a lot on the plate. When I filled it up, it was just a little last half full. I had their Dal Bhat Tarkari which is a platter of different things including rice, naan, some pickled things, one gulab jamun, lentils, curried vegetables, and I got lamb curry. I didn't really like the flavor of the lamb curry because of the gaminess but everything else was delicious! I was so impressed with their naan it was perfectly made. Everything was made fresh, and I love that they are super Covid conscious here by checking vaccine cards and everything. I also tried their aloo tikka chaat which is an appetizer. It's my first time trying chaat and for an appetizer they gave so much it was like entree. I was so impressed with the flavors and everything they put in I highly recommend this dish.
