UDUPI: The name is widely believed to originate from the Sanskrit words Udu (meaning "stars") and Pa (meaning "lord"). Combined, it means "Lord of the Stars" Near the corner of MLK and Shattuck Ave- across from Trader Joe's is this nice little vegetarian Indian restaurant. A recommendation from a client I had today directed me here before my trip home over the San Rafael Richmond Bridge. I found a parking spot right around the corner. One space from the corner is Udupi Palace and the Corner space is a Turkish restaurant that once was a breakfast spot that I used to frequent back in 1984. A memory jolt from times long ago when I worked for a minute across the street at a modern furniture store-"The Apartment Store." Chrome, glass, and marble home furnishings that took several months to deliver and required a 50% deposit. A strange business model indeed! To my delight, my meal came much quicker. A nice portion for my curry entrée which came complete with rice, Poori: Deep-fried, puffed whole wheat bread, and I believe a piece of Papadum: a thin, crisp wafer made from lentil flour. Ate at Udupi again the other day. As usual. Yum! The service staff has changed a bit, but everyone who works there is still very nice and helpful. It's just that a former server knew exactly what we wanted and we didn't even have to tell her. No malice at Udupi Palace. While I wonder how south Indian, how Udupi the Palace is, the dosas and uttapams are exotic artifacts in an otherwise Punjabi dominated world of area Indian restaurants. There is a dosa with a cheesy veg masala. While the appearance of freezer bag peas and carrots in the masala will trouble you, the gestalt will satisfy you. Dosas made with any combination of rice flour, lentil flour and chickpea flour. Crepe like, but crisper There is a uttapam with onions, cabbage, and cauliflower. These are constructed with thicker batter than the dosa. Little accompaniments line the top of your stainless steel platter. Sambar, the meaty, albeit vegetarian, squash n lentil soup. Tomato chutney. Coconut chutney. The richness of the toasted coconut went jolly good with the spicy uttapam. The already rich items are relieved with the tartness of the tomato. A great spot for a dosa given there aren't that many in Berkeley/Oakland area and they have a lot of different options. The dosas are very flavourful and they are very generous with the filling and it is much more affordable than Vik's Chaat. I will say that I've only had them as takeout so the dosa is folded when it is given as a takeaway. I've tried 3 different dosas from them and they've all been great. My favourite has been the Special Spring Dosa so far. This is one of my regular go to takeaways when I can't figure out what to make for dinner. read more

We really love this place, but it's been a while. Today, we picked up three different dosas that we ordered over the phone. The woman on the phone was so kind and accommodating as we asked a number of questions. We ordered the Mysore Masala Dosa ($12.50), the Udupi Special Spring Dosa (requested no potatoes- $12.95), and the Spinach Paneer Dosa ($13.95). All of the dosas come with the coconut chutney, sambar, and spicy sauce. I always order the masala dosa, and as usual, it was perfect! Classic choice. The spring dosa was probably my least favorite of the three (and it was still good, to be clear). This may have been because we asked for the potatoes to be nixed. The vegetables could've been sautéed for a bit longer. The spinach paneer dosa was a surprise favorite. Whoa! The seasoning and textures were unexpected and worked perfectly. I forgot how good this place was (it's very no-frills in terms of decor) and my mom, sister, and I all agreed we'd be back very soon! read more

An outstanding restaurant that happens to be vegetarian and one of my favorite places to frequent when I am in Berkeley. I went here recently with three other people for a weekend dinner and we were able to get seats immediately. Our service was great, portion sizes are excellent, and Udupi Palace is extremely affordable. My friend and I came by for some South Indian food to celebrate Diwali. We dropped by Sunday around 6 pm and only a couple tables were occupied, though it got busier as we were eating. The menu is fully vegetarian and focuses on South Indian dishes like vada, dosa, and uthappam, though they have offer some curries as well. My friend and I shared the thali ($15.95) and the Udupi combo ($14.95), which comes with either dosa/uthappam and idli + medhu vada. We got the masala dosa for the combo. The combo was good. There was a generous amount of potato filling inside the dosa, and we enjoyed both the vada and idli with the sambar. The curries in the thali were a bit hit and miss, as they usually are. My favorites were the green bean curry and the potato curry. I find the portions here a bit smaller than other South Indian places. My friend was full after the meal, but I wasn't fully satisfied and ended up snacking afterwards to get full. read more

I have driven past this place for years. I wish I had stopped sooner. Parking is street, so can be hit or miss. Service was friendly and helpful. Restaurant is vegetarian and most items can be made vegan. I ordered entirely way too much and it was all delicious. I really enjoyed the amount of small plates and street food options. We had a wonderful dinner here on a Wednesday night! Excellent food; fast, friendly service; and a pleasant, casual setting. I loved my spinach paneer Dosa, and really enjoyed the coconut chutney and Sambar that came with it (the tomato chutney was too spicy for me). My 6 year old daughter enjoyed her idlies, and my elderly father liked his uthapam. The service was very responsive. I really appreciated the fact they brought out idly for my hungry child within a minute after I made the request and conveyed the urgency. The space is clean, casual, and reasonably spacious. What a wonderful staple of Berkeley! We have been going here for years, and Udupi Palace is a favorite eatery of ours. Service is quick, and food is delicious. We try to come here when it's not too crowded with a lunch or dinner rush, and for those quick meals after running errands. Dosas are very tasty, as are the curries. The chutneys are good but not overwhelming, and they are a nice complement to the meal - some might even say bland, but I prefer the subdued chutneys. Solid spot next to Trader Joe's for some Indian food. I ordered a vegetable dosa, and this was actually my first time trying a dosa! It comes wrapped in something similar to a crepe, but more crispy, with curried vegetables inside. The vegetables were flavorful and not too heavy. Recently dropped by to have my beloved paneer makhani (paneer cooked in tomato gravy and cream, but you can have the spice level adjusted) and delicious, crispy, & tasty dosas. This place ALWAYS hits the spot when craving Indian. Love that there's a bunch of sides and different carbs to dip & eat with your curry such as poori (the big ball lookin' thing) and chapati (crispy, like a huge chip!). I love being able to try a variety of items, so I really enjoyed how this place had specials where you could get a platter of assorted curries. We came on a Sunday night and the service was really quick. Not many people were dining in, but it seemed like there were always orders being picked up. South Indian Thali Combo: So many different soups and curries along with dessert and rice! I didn't grow up with a lot of Indian places nearby, so it's really nice being able to try a variety of flavors all at once. Udupi Combo with Mysore Masala Dosa (spicy chutney and spiced potatoes): The dosa was my favorite part of the meal. It's so delicious with the curries and the idly is great! Been wanting to checkout Udupi Palace for years! And it was well worth the wait. Simple but clean joint, with one lady working so she was a bit busy but still attended to us very well. You got to try their range of dosas! We had the humongous but light 2 ft paper dosa, and the spicy rava dosa. My eyes got big so we also got some onion and chili uthappam and a briyani to go. All were amazing, full of flavors. Pro tip: The dosas and uthappams are best eaten on site right away -- they don't travel well and reheating them doesn't work so well. Next time I'm gonna have to try their thali with some idly and vada. read more

REALLY solid vegetarian south indian food. the best in berkeley imo! dosa was so crispy and chewy, and the filling was soooo flavorful. loved the onion masala dosa, the onions really added a lot of flavor. the curries were also really flavorful, much more so than the usual indian placed in berkeley. mango lassi was much more yogurt forward and thinner/warmer than i'm used to, i thought it was supposed to be more smoothie like. also a little too sweet. but still pretty solid. read more
