BoI is a local place for me. It used to be amazing 15 years ago. Now its ok.. but their breads our always stellar. I get food from them occasionally - however I do go there for breads or some samosa frequently to compliment a meal i am making at home. The folks are always very friendly there. read more

This Indian restaurant deserves to be known much more widely! Had an outstanding lunch here this week. I'm from India, and have high standards for Indian food. Quite bummed out that it took me 11 years to discover this amazing restaurant. But there are so many Indian restaurants in East Bay, and this had just never crossed my radar as a place to try. First of all, the menu is outstanding. There are dishes that you will never find on the menu of any other restaurant. We had Chicken Paratha Fold, Masaledar Bharwa Karela (bitter melon; literally as good as my mom's, but it's an acquired taste), and Kori Gasi (a south Indian chicken curry). Everything was outstanding (except for one small thing: the paratha did not appear to be fresh). I loved the attention to detail in everything else. They have the very best green chutney (cilantro-mint) and red chutney (tamarind) I have ever eaten in any Indian restaurant in the US (and I've lived here more than 40 years). Portions are a good size, and the two of us were completely full. You don't have to pay extra for rice, like you have to do almost everywhere else. The entrees come with rice and daal and a small serving of salad (some very nice lettuce drizzled with green chutney; sensational!). Their house wine is only $5 a glass. Nowhere else in the Bay Area can you get a glass of wine for that price; a very generous pour too. Our dessert was Phirni (a very traditional rice-flour pudding). That was only $4 for a very generous serving. Overall, the food was really delicious, the portions generous, the prices very reasonable. Service was great. We will definitely be back again and again. FLAVORFUL INDIAN DISHES & SELECTION OF NAAN. I happened to drive by this place every day and decided it was time to try it out, and I'm glad I was able to get some of their authentic Indian food! AMBIANCE: 3/5. There is only street parking available and may be quite limited. Small and very intimate interior but with plenty of indoor seating. As soon as you walk in, you'll be greeted and seated by staff. The restaurant has a small cozy, quiet, & peaceful ambiance. SERVICE: 4/5. There was only one main staff who was on the floor, and he was attentive and served us as quickly as he could. FOOD: 4/5. The dishes we got, especially the large garlic naan, were excellent. The spices were a great balance that could accommodate many. The menu could be larger with more diverse options but does describe each dish in a more reader-friendly format. The portions are slightly smaller than I was hoping, but the quality of the dishes is wonderful! OVERALL: 4/5. All-in-all good authentic Indian food with delicious garlic naan! read more

HIGHLY recommend this place.Very rarely will you find true Tandoori flavors / Punjabi cuisine in the Bay Area. This is one of those gems. Had lunch with the family - Chicken tikka kabab 9/10 Butter chicken - 9/10 Garlic Naans -9/10 Veg biryani - 8/10 (very good. I would have liked more paneer but tbh it was a vegetable and paneer biryani so this was just a personal preference. Flavors were on point). Raita - 9/10 Cozy ambience. Friendly service. After many years we returned to this once esteemed restaurant and while the menu was unchanged, the cooking was very disappointing. Gone were the vibrant spices. The daal, saag, and curries were bland. And the tandoori salmon was definitely not marinated or seared in any kind of high heat oven (nor was the subpar naan). Service was very slow -- which was odd because there was no one else being served during the entire time we were there. Very sad shadow of its former self. read more

I needed to stop and take a minute to review breads of India. I've been coming here for over 20 years at least. My godmother used to get me naan from here before I knew what Indian food really was. Two nights ago I ordered the tikka chicken masala The vegetarian briyani And the garlic naan as well as the daal tadka. Everything came really cold or at room temp so we had to reheat it. But anyone that knows real Indian food knows that things aren't usually made to order. They could heat it a bit more however. The briyani was some of the best. A little light on paneer two pieces but they used taro and lotus root and caramelized onions and really tasty veggies. The tikka was also delicious not creamy as much as it was a delicate spicy sauce that wasn't super heavy. The tadka was perfectly spiced and the beans were cooked and soaked perfectly not hard just perfect. The naan was fluffy and the samosas. They were so delicately flavored and not greasy. Great food. I was recommended this by a friend and had wanted to try it for a while since I saw they have specials that change each month, both for their signature breads and for main dishes generally. I ordered a Kashmiri tikka and a phirni pudding. I am not sure what possessed me to not realize the Kashmiri tikka is a chicken-based dish (I am vegetarian) but it was still yummy and fresh, a good portion and I particularly liked the lentil side dish. My friend has been telling me for 10 years to try this place and I never get over to try it as I am usually in San Francisco for business or to visit family and friends. I finally got a chance to book my hotel nearby for a conference and I jumped at the opportunity to try BOI. I am very happy that I did. It is a small and quaint restaurant. I walked in on a Sunday night and no customers were there but I was greeted by a friendly lady who directed me to sit wherever I wanted. There are large windows near the front to look out on to the street. There are about 10 tables, so it is not very large. There are some paintings on the wall, but the decor is not the strong suit of this restaurant. I heard that their menu changes often. It was larger and different than most of the Indian food places I have been to in San Diego. I decided to start with Chicken Tikka Masala and some Garlic Naan. I fully intended to try all of the other breads as I was instructed to by my friend. Unfortunately the food was too good, too filling, and the Garlic Naan was too large so my plan to try the rest of the breads went down in flames. I was so stuffed and all of that food was about $20 with tax and tip. The Garlic Naan was delicious, soft, warm, and probably the best Naan i have ever had. I could eat that every day. Nom Nom. There are three (3) things that give my life otherwise devoid of happiness meaning: 1. French toast 2. My smokin hot wife 3. Paneer Curry Breads of India delivers a great paneer vindaloo, delicious naan, and a fine mango lassi. One thing that gives this place an edge of the competition is including the rice with your order, unlike some places (looking at you house of curries in Elmwood). Also, the ambiance on a cold rainy day in their warmly lit small dining room is delightfully cozy. Jesus Christ is this place good! wowweee, not many places hit all four marks of ambiance, taste, price, and portions but Breads of India manages to do it all with flawless effort. The menus have a newspaper look to them which adds to the character Of the detailed food descriptions as if it came from a food column. It was a delightful experience, and me and my husband are planning on becoming regulars. P.s. since we are both lactose intolerant, we don't mind when we both are poopin' up a storm :) read more

I had the Kashmiri Tikka. It was absolutely fantastic, the chicken was spicy, somewhere between firm and soft but not chewy. You could taste all the different flavors. It also came with some dal on top of the listed salad and rice. I will most definitely be coming back here. The server was nice and laid attention. The portion size of the curry/rice was alright (I wish they gave a little more rice but the naan/paratha were good substitutes). I wish the curry had more meat in it too. I heard good things about this place in the past - it's unfortunate that the past several times I have visited, the food has been tepid at best. The saag paneer and saag aloo are tasteless, with very little potato or chick peas in a bland saag. These dishes come with a far too small quantity of rice, with no option to substitute naan. Service is speedy, but unfortunately cannot make up for the poor quality of the curries. Perhaps the non-vegetarian dishes are better. Options for vegetarians are comparatively limited (saag, chana, and handful of appetizers are among the few things on the current menu I can find). If I could leave a zero star review I would. Ordered two tiki masala's and they were packed with the lids off so they spilled everywhere and when we went to go back to the restaurant we were not offered a replacement or refund or anything. 40$ for two orders of tiki masala which we also were charged for rice and naan when we specifically asked for none. Disgusting customer service absolutely would not recommend. read more

I've been to most of Berkeleys Indian and Pakistani restaurants. This may be the worst. The tandoori chicken was flavorless and lacked any char. Probably wasn't cooked in a tandoor clay oven. the tikka masala sauce was too sweet and had no depth of flavor. The spinach saag tasted like it was canned and was runny like soup. Everything was completely overpriced. Food for 2 was almost $100 with tax and delivery. The chai was sickeningly sweet like starbucks...they can't even serve authentic chai. This place has gone downhill. The vibe in the restaurant was never positive for years, horrible lack of friendliness. The delivery cost and prices of the food make this place the bottom of the barrel in Berkeley. The recipes and quality need a huge overhaul. read more

I often get takeout from here and it is very consistently great. I like the slight variations from month to month, always with interesting descriptions about the history of the dish. We tend to order the chicken tikka special, which has the option of tikka masala sauce on the side. That way you can dip naan or chicken in sauce or have the tender nicely seasoned chicken by itself.
