Special fish appetizer, "tiger prawn" platter, Butter Chicken, Rice

Checked out the Delhi Diner during the Solano St fest because of the nice outside appearance and the reviews on Yelp. When we entered, I was in awe of the restaurant space. The spacious and open ambience, along with the decor, established the vibe of the cuisine. The servers were welcoming and provided all the necessary plates and utensils for my little children, and there were at least 3-4 different staff members who checked in to make sure we were taken care of. It was an extensive menu with some interesting offerings. The special fried fish appetizer was a highlight and one I would love to try again. In addition, all of the stews/curries were top notch flavor and enjoyable with the rice. Regrettably, the tandori chicken was fairly dry (almost like the pre-cook was beyond what would stand well with the sizzling plate) and the serving size didn't justify the price. Also, the grilled tiger prawns made me question if we actually were receiving tiger prawns - they were quite small and definitely did not justify the price of the entree. Between the staff, the restaurant vibes, and most of the stew/appetizer offerings, this is a very good place that I wouldn't mind suggesting to someone looking for a nice casual place to enjoy Indian. However, there are definitely some spots (all grilled plates) that would encourage me to try other places instead.

Refused to take a gift card purchased from their website. My parents purchased a 100 dollar gift card as a gift so I could enjoy a meal around my birthday. I would not have returned if I had not been for the gift card. I've been 5 times and the last 3 visits have been underwhelming food wise. Today they refused the gift card and said I needed to come another time when the owner was there. I will not go back. Too many other good spots that serve Indian food to get messed around like this. Congrats you lost a customer and stole 100 dollars.

Absolutely love this place -- my go-to spot for Indian food in the East Bay! Great ambience and great food.

I was in the Berkeley area after class and absolutely starving. I've been wanting to try Indian food for a while because I've heard so many good things about the flavors and cuisine. I found Delhi Diner on Yelp and decided to give it a try -- and I'm so glad I did! The owner was incredibly friendly and helpful, especially since it was my first time trying Indian food. He took the time to explain the menu and helped me choose a few items. I ended up ordering Chicken Tikka Masala, naan, basmati rice, and a Mango Lassi to go. Even after my 30-minute drive back to Hayward, the food was still hot and smelled amazing. The Chicken Tikka Masala was rich and flavorful -- the chicken was perfectly tender, and that sauce... honestly, I could just eat it with naan alone. The Mango Lassi was unlike any drink I've ever had -- creamy, refreshing, and perfectly sweet with real mango flavor. I'm so happy I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried Indian food for the first time here. I paid around $36 for everything, and it was enough for two to three sittings. Delhi Diner has definitely made me a fan and now I know why they are rated some of the best food in the East Bay-- I'll be back soon to try more from their menu! I'm hooked!

One line review: This was average -- surprising, given the reviews. We really wanted to like this place. And there were things to enjoy. The physical space is attractive (though a bit cool on the March night of our visit), the service attentive. But the food was only okay. We had goat curry (not enough salt, not especially flavorful), chicken tikka masala (spicy, the way we ordered it; best thing on the table), garlic naan (didn't taste of garlic), lachcha paratha (fine), and veggie samosas (tasty but small). We also had a chai (smallish) and a nimbu paani (this was kind of salty -- like a gatorade -- not my favorite). On the whole, the food was adequate but not special -- disappointing given the huge number of glowing reviews. The service was friendly and attentive, though our waitress had limited English and had a hard time answering some of our questions. A man (owner? manager?) came out to greet us before we left and was super friendly. But even though the restaurant calls itself a 'tip-free zone,' they charge a non-optional 18% service charge. I didn't care for that. I'd rather make that determination for myself. Parking was free on Solano and in the nearby neighborhood. Bottom line: Given the high reviews, I wonder if we just ordered the wrong items on this first visit. But it is unlikely that we'll return, as we've already had better Indian food in the same area and I really dislike the compulsory service charge.

Came here on a Sunday for lunch and enjoyed the food and ambience overall. They have plenty of seating space inside with nice interiors. We tried their Chana chaat, chicken tikka masala, malai kofta, naan and goat biryani. The biryani and malai kofta was alright and chicken tikka masala and naan were really good. For drinks their jaljeera was very refreshing. The service was pretty quick and staff was very attentive.

Ate lunch here. The food was very good. I had lamb vindaloo. The lamb was tender and flavorful. The veggie samosas were very good also. Beautiful restaurant. Great ambiance and great service. The staff was very attentive. F/U: I ordered gobi mancherian to go. Ate it for dinner. It was REALLY good!

We are back. Once again ... the tables were clean and well set, superior quality original foods, fresh ingredients, and gracious staff. The place was busy so I think reservations would be a good idea but walk-ins during non-peak times are fine. There was 3 of us dining. Talasi was our amazing server. And he speaks fluently in English and Japanese as well as his native Indian dialect. It was fun to share speaking in different tongues. Also a very nice young lady helped. We ordered 3 styles of different proteins Tofu, Shrimp, and chicken.. You may request Halal, vegan, or regular proteins. We ordered the incredible garlic Naan bread, rice, and I ate the Butter Chicken. We shared as usual. Deeeelish. Everything I have ever eat from here is so complex and tasty. Highly recommended and the service was amazing.

First thing. I entered the beautifully designed empty building just before lunch ended. The gentleman behind the counter was extremely kind and helpful. He gave me some suggestions, explained what a few other things on the menu were, gave me the best tips on heating the food up. I was buying dinner and it was lunch time. I waited in my car for my food to be ready. When I went back in, he said he came outside looking for me to give me my food. He then gave me a complimentary drink. I don't know what it was but it looked like mango something. I drank the whole thing on my way home and it was delicious!!! I can't wait to have the food.

Sorry ate too much before photo lol but I got the lamb tikka masala, my niece got the chicken tikka masala.

I ordered the Nimki Chaat because I'd seen it mentioned several times in reviews. It was a fun, tasty starter--too much for one person, but I'd definitely order it again with a group. For my entrée, I ordered the chicken tandoori tiki kebab. The chicken was high quality, flavorful, and didn't have that red dye you see in so much tandoori chicken. I ordered it medium spicy, but it wasn't really spicy at all. Still, it was very good. I'm more of a curry person, though, because I love having sauce to dip my naan in and enjoy with rice. The dish came with a small green salad, raita, and rice. I also ordered the garlic naan, which was really, really good--thin, crispy, and pillowy all at once. I couldn't taste a lot of garlic, but I never really can at any Indian restaurant. Before my meal arrived, I was served a cup of dal soup, which was quite nice. I usually find lentil soup watery and boring, but this one was flavorful and satisfying. I look forward to going back and trying a curry dish and the momo.

The chicken tikka masala is a classic and definitely worth getting; it's flavorful and reliably good every time. But what really surprised me was the shrimp curry. I went in expecting the shrimp to be a bit overcooked or limited in quantity, but that wasn't the case at all. The shrimp were actually cooked really well and there was a generous amount in the dish, making it feel like a great value. One thing to keep in mind, rice doesn't automatically come with the curries, so you'll have to order it separately if you want it. That said, we usually skip the rice and go for naan instead, specifically the potato naan and garlic naan. Between the two, you get a really nice contrast in texture. The potato naan is thicker, soft, and fluffy on the inside, almost like a comforting, filled bread, while the garlic naan is thinner with a slightly crispy edge. Make sure not to sleep on the free chai tea, it's easy to miss if you're not looking for it. Off to the right of the cashier desk, there's a little self-serve station with cups, sugar packets, stir sticks, and a large container filled with hot chai. You can pour as much as you want, whenever you want, which is a nice touch and a great way to round out the meal. One thing to note about the atmosphere: there are occasional slow periods where the place can get really quiet, and you might even find yourself as the only table there. It can feel a little awkward in those moments, but it just depends on the time of day. When it's busy, though, it has a much more lively, energetic feel. Overall, it's a solid, low-key spot with good food, a family-friendly environment, and a few nice little perks that make it stand out.

The Tenali Kura (paneer) claimed to be a 2/5 spice level, and I assure you it was NOT. I have been trying to follow an acid reflux diet, which is supposed to be minimal/no spices. I figured 2/5 would be okay- maybe some warmth, but surely on the mild side. I was wrong. After 2 bites, I felt like my lips were starting to puff up and my mouth was salivating more to deal with the spice. I felt so confused, I had to ask the owner "Is this a 2/5 Indian spicy? Or regular?" and she laughed. She said "If it were up to me, I would say it's 4/5 spicy. My husband said it was a 2/5 so that's what he put on the menu."
