Vik's Chaat is so cool! I can't believe we've never truly experienced it until recently. A mix between a grocer, fresh food made-to-order, and indoor/outdoor seating to enjoy your purchases/yummies. Located on 4th Street, it's def worthy of checking out during a lovely summer weekend afternoon. I noticed they have happy hour weekly, and the market opening around 10:30a and Chaat around 11a. They have daily specials, and also many kiddo friendly dishes too. Coined "The SF Bay Area's Original Indian Street Food Restaurant", we had such a fun time exploring foods and fare we've never had before. For the market, you can also shop online for delivery/curbside delivery. Food-wise we tried the Vada Pao (fried potato patty in a bun), a Kids Cheese Dosa (served with coconut chutney and tomato chutney), a Mango Lassi, and their signature chicken wrap. Everything was so flavorful and fresh. Nice staff, vibrant atmosphere, plenty of parking in/around Vik's Chaat, and pro-tip: take a nice walk around the area post-meal. We will definitely come back to try more from the menu and maybe next time even come home with a few market items. That coconut chutney..yum! read more

Vik's Chaat is a solid spot and somewhere I'm happy to visit every once in a while, even if it isn't a regular stop for me. The food was good, though it felt a touch pricey for what you get. Then again, it's Berkeley, so that's not exactly surprising. One thing I really like is the attached market. It's nice being able to grab chutneys, spices, or bags of garbanzo beans while you're there. The ample parking is also a huge plus, which isn't always easy to find in Berkeley. My biggest complaint is the lack of ice. No ice water, no iced chai, nothing. It's a small thing, but on a warm day it definitely stood out. I was very disappointed at food quality - Chole Bhature doesn't seem to be cooked well, chole were bland and bitter, Bhatura gave me bad stomach. I've been going to viks since I was a kid and it was a two table cafe in the back of an Indian store. The food has happily improved over the last few years and it's no longer too spicy to eat. Definitely the best place for chaat in the east bay, with fast service, and plenty of places to grab a seat. read more

Massive restaurant, where you order your food with the cashier and then wait until they call your name. They put your food on a silver platter and it made me feel like I was in a school cafeteria. Food was good! Definitely flavorful. They say the pani puri is very spicy but I thought it was just mild! Bummer! What a raging disappointment! The Dahi Papdi chart had absolutely no flavor-the chutneys were terrible. The dosa was meh. The Vada-pav was below par The Mithai was stale & rubbery. My first visit here was during covid time. Went back last weekend and it blew me away!! The prices have definitely increased but so has the menu, the venue, the facility and service :) so yes it's still worth it! In $55, we got: - chole bhature 5/5 - 2 plates- delicious and huge. The food taste and quality has gone down drastically in the last few years at Vik's chaat. We picked up chola batura, lamb biryani, chicken biryani, masala dosa, dahi papri chaat, one more Chaat and veg pakoras on 7/2/26. All food items were not good and some too salty. Although it's a staple whenever I visit Berkeley and in mood for some chaat, this is my first time reviewing the place! They make sure that food you are eating there gets prepared and served first and only then the togo bag gets ready - this was really amazing to see happen! The food is right tasting with medium spices but all freshly made. Although not excellent the food will definitely make your stomach happy It's located on the far end of Berkeley near the water park and has lot of parking. Came here for a team lunch and was instantly amazed. Vik's chaat is part grocery store part dine in restaurant. The fragrance from the kitchen wafted through the entire space made me want to try everything. It's a place where you order, pick up food and find a seat. I love that the pick up stations matches the type of food ordered. For example, I ordered the lunch special so I picked up my order under the special banner. Someone else ordered Tandoori, they picked up food under tandoori. I picked the chicken curry lunch special and I thought it was a basic choice, but the tray was anything but. So delicious! I love the lentil soup that came on the side. The table shared sev puri and the batata puri and both were really good. I think I liked the batata puri better. Its texture is similar to a hummus but with a lot more flavor. The cashier and the people at the pick up counter were all friendly. Patient especially with that many people waiting and asking if it's their dish or not. This was a new way to enjoy Indian food and I would come back to try more of the menu. read more

Didn't know what to expect when i got here but looking around the restaurant i kept seeing a giant bread balloon and figured i had to try that. Turns out thats the Cholle Batura. I have been coming here since I was a kid!! Viks has always been a must-go when I'm in Berkeley. My order of choice is the Cholle bhatura with a mango lassi. The puri it comes with is HUGE and soft, and it comes with the perfect amount of warming and sort of cinnamon-y Chana masala. The mango lassi is one of the best I've had, it's super creamy and you can tell they make it in-house. And of course I never leave without a box of mithai!! Vik's was one of our family favorite restaurants when the kids were younger. Cafeteria style. Food is served on metal canteen plates. You pick up your own items and dump your own trash. Prices keep climbing over the years but the food is still as good as I remember. 10 years ago I think it was only $20 to feed our little family of four, now more like $50-60. Our family loves the Bhature Cholle (big puffy thing) and Masala Dosa (Indian veggie burrito) the most, and we alternate ordering the Pani Puri (crunchy little thingies) and Dahi Batata (yogurty puri). Every once in a while we do order their lunch platters but we like those less than the bready items. I love that the Bhature Cholle and Masala Dosa are always made to order, you can watch them make it (my kids liked watching when they were younger). We love the mango lassi here, not too sweet and not too tangy, perfect balance. Tip: if your name is difficult to pronounce, consider giving them an easier name instead. You order at the cashier and once your items are ready, they call your name to the corresponding counter to pick up each item as they are ready. Usually we wait about 10 minutes for food. If you aren't sure, just ask, they're very friendly. Don't let your food sit at the counter! The fresh bready items will get soggy, then they're not as good anymore. This is one of the Best quick Indian food places to stop by when in the Bay Area. When we feel like Indian food, and are around the area, we always stop by this place. Everything we've gotten is very good. Today there was actually plenty of parking. Probably because we came at an odd time and it was raining. Usually, parking is pretty tough to find, so be warned. When utilizing their parking lot, you enter through their Grocery area. It's like a mini maze until you pop up to the main restaurant area. It is self seating. Please be courteous when reserving seats. I attached some pictures of the menu, so you'll know what to order as soon as they call you. Once your order your food, I suggest waiting around the area where you pick up your food. If you back to your table, it will be very difficult to hear your name. The place is loud and for some reason their speakers are very muffled. So be aware of that. Also note that when they call your name, that doesn't necessarily mean all your food is ready for pick up. It just means they have some of your food ready. So get your food they called you up for, and drop it off at your table, and head back haha it's fun watching them cook, so it helps the time pass by quickly. Where to begin. I've been here in the past, food has always been really good. Idk what was up with today. The employees did not want to be bothered, nor do they know the meaning of customer service. They will not smile or even attempt to talk to you. They had a look of disapproval anytime you ask anything. I've always wanted to try Vic's Chaat and last night was the night. I came by with a group of 7 for early dinner at 4 pm and it wasn't too busy. They have a market on one side to check out and restaurant is on the other side. They have specials only on weekend so nice to try some of them. I got the vegetarian thali and it came with lentils, rice, roti, yogurt and a tofu in curry. I liked the tofu, could have used a little more kick but it was good. My friends all liked their butter chicken, tandoori chicken and chicken biryani. Prices are reasonable $17-20. Order at the counter and wait for your name to be called. Vik's was my first meal that I ever had in Berkeley after a long drive from SoCal, and I highly (emphasis on highly!) recommend as a first-time visitor to the city! The menu is primarily northern dishes but also has plenty of south Indian as well. Everything is served hot and without delay, and there is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating in a gorgeous, colorful, and clean dining area. Kitchens are sanitary and the area is regularly kept wiped down, and the staff are very polite and helpful! My go-to comfort meal is the bhatura cholle washed down with mango lassi, and maybe a bit of their tasty sweets they offer! I was looking forward to trying Vik's Chaat because I have heard so many great things, but I was a little disappointed considering all the amazing Indian food there is in the Bay Area. Nothing was particularly bad, but I wasn't wowed either. The chicken 65 was decent but not as flavorful as others I've tried and I feel like the amount of meat they gave for the price was a little steep. The cholle bhature had a strong oily flavor, likely because the oil was not super fresh. The Chana masala was okay but nothing special. The pav bhaji was probably my favorite, but it could have used a little bit more texture. At this price point, I recommend trying other spots in the east or south bay! read more

After a round of Disc golf came here with some friends and really enjoyed the experience. I love Indian food but am no expert other than to say everything was very fresh and flavorful. The chais are excellent as are the mango lassis. I had a chicken tandoori lunch plate that came with rice, a sort of fig jam, daal, and a yogurt that was excellent. Lively Indian spot near Berkeley's 4th Street! Came here with friends on a Wednesday during lunch time, and it was very busy. However, service was fast and we got our food shortly after ordering (waited ~7 min to order, ~7 min to get food). I got their Masala Dosa and also got to try some of their Dahi Butata Puri. Their dosa was nice and crispy while the sambar with tomato flavor was great. The Dahi Butata Puri was great as well with good texture and flavor. I love the supermarket connected to the place! My friends and I got snacks such as Kurkure Masala Munch and some Maggi on the go. I want to try their Chole Bhature next time I stop by (it looked so good!) Vik's Chaat appears to be a good place to get lunch and try out various chaat items. While I have visited several times, my recent visit left much to be desired. Customer service was adequate and efficient. However, I was disappointed with the taste and quality of the items I ordered. The last time I ate at Vik's, I ended up getting a bad stomachache and opted to not return for a few months. After my recent visit over the weekend, I will say the quality of food has further declined, while prices have increased steadily. I usually order a dosa, chole bhature (puffy bread with chickpea curry) and smaller items like samosa or pakoras. The dosa was fine, but the pakoras were not very tasty, and the batter had a bit of a sour smell unfortunately. This could be due to the batter being not fresh, or something off with the ingredients. I was hoping for a pleasant, flavorful meal, and it ended up being underwhelming, and I didn't really enjoy any of the items. The dahi papdi chaat was alright, but the samosas were too oily and weren't too great sadly. Another thing to note is that for 2 entrees, and 3 chaat items (appetizers), the total was $56+ and was pricier than anticipated. If you dine here, it may be best to stick to weekend specials, which are hopefully better quality. While Vik's Chaat was a great food spot in the past, I'm not sure that is still the case. It may be best to dine or order takeout elsewhere, especially if you're wanting chaat or a better value meal. read more
