Vegan N' Chicken 1 opened a year ago in part of where Indus Food Center was. Other part is a grocery store. Small dining area. Got food 20ish minutes later. Self service plates, utensils, chai, soup Offerings (halal, Indian, Pakistani): appetizers, Naan, vegan food, vegeterian, biryani/rice, sides, Chicken/Lamb/Seafood curries, tandoori... There are very few restaurants where I find myself venture back to the very next day after trying it for the first time, but Vegan N' Chicken had me hooked after my first bite. I was looking for a simple comfort meal after a long day and decided to try a place. It was around 8:30 and most places in the area were closing at 9 but Vegan N' Chicken happened to be open until 10pm! When I walked in, I immediately was welcomed with 'mom and pop' restaurant vibes. It is a very casual and fairly small restaurant, but it makes for a very comforting experience. You get to seat yourself then they'll bring you a menu. The menu is simple, but also has everything you'd need. They even have a few seafood dishes! While you wait for your food, you can help yourself to their complimentary soup & hot chai. I'll admit I have no clue what the soup is, but it is such a great way to start the meal. Especially with some hot chai too! On day 1 we ordered Lamb Tikka Masala ($14.99), Chana Masala ($9.99), Cheese Naan ($3.99), Rice ($2.99), and Vegetable Samosas ($4.99). The servings were very generous for the price compared to other similar restaurants in Berkeley. We did ask for medium spice level, but it wasn't spicy enough for us so they brought us a plate of onions, peppers, and cucumbers! The Chana Masala was my favorite bite of the night. It was packed with fragrant spices & the garbanzo beans were so tender. The Lamb Tikka Masala was a little bit sweeter than I am used to, but after mixing in some rice or eating it with the cheese naan it was perfect. On day 2, we ordered the Papadum ($2.99), Rice ($2.99), Prawn Vindaloo ($17.99), and Chana Masala ($9.99 - we added paneer to it and didn't confirm how much it was with the paneer). This time we ordered our dishes spicy to see if it was any different. It really was still not spicy at all, but honestly it didn't bother us. It was a great way to be able to enjoy the dishes in their entirety. The prawns in the vindaloo were fairly large and the portion was perfect for two people! They were also not overcooked & still had a nice bounce when biting into it. The Chana masala with the added paneer was a great combination as well. Vegan N' Chicken is honestly a great spot for the college students nearby as well. It's affordable & could easily be split into two meals even if you just order one dish! Next time we stop by, we're going for the biryani!

Warm plates, warm food, warm people Complimentary chicken hot and sour soup, complimentary tea. Very tasty and fresh food, this restaurant does not use any frozen ingredient. Very reasonable priced with most dishes being in $14-$20 range, given that the soup is complimentary as well as the tea, incredible value and taste at $14-$20. The food service is quick, clean and warm - they even have a warm plate, in winter this is such a nice touch to get food in a warm plate. The ambiance is cozy, warm home-like, clean and professional. Very polite staff and owners. Love that they have a balanced mix of vegetarian and meat-based dishes. 5/5

I give this rating now because I love walking into a place and receive great customer service, a friendly smile and hello goes a long way me. They just opened the doors for lunch, we ate a late breakfast so this is going to be lunch for my son when he is ready to eat. I will taste it to see if I like it and will come back later today and order some for me. The restaurant is clean. The music adds a special touch being in their language, oh not music, I just asked the young girl. It is a chant. The guy offers me complimentary chi as I start to exit. Can't wait to taste this Chicken Biryani.

Just stumbled upon this place. The owner is beyond friendly & chatty, so nice. We tried two vegan dishes - daal & banghan bartha and they were delicious & flavorful. Prices are very reasonable and the dishes hardy & good portion. Will most definitely be back to try other vegan dishes. They also have vegan roti bread. CC accepted.

Amazing, absolutely come here. Had this on the way back from vacation and my travel companion said it was the best meal they had the entire trip. I hadn't had experience with eating the food I chose but it tasted great and my friend who did said so too :) it's super affordable, I love that they have clearly defined vegan dishes. It's really authentic and the people are very kind

The food and the service were excellent. Very affordable and delicious, fresh food. Service was also friendly and competent. Parking was easy on side street. This was my birthday lunch and it couldn't have been better! We are vegan but I would love to come back to try their other options. They also do spice level to order.

I took my mom to a Mediterranean market. Next door had a new restaurant that just opened. We decided to eat here because the smell of their aroma food made me hungry. We ordered the usual chicken tiki masala that my mom likes and I had the special okra masala. The food was delicious. The non-bread was amazing fresh baked all in all will definitely come back again and again. friendly service the chef even came out to talk to us very nice.

Sometimes it's good to try something different and a place with some interesting character and characters. I usually get deli sandwiches which have deli meats but this place has fried chicken sandwiches . So I was craving a sandwich so I headed to Crave Subs in Downtown Berkeley next to BART station. They have lots of sandwiches available on the menu. On a Summer stroll getting some sun in Downtown Berkeley I landed at Crave Subs. Inside it's like you stepped into an ice cream parlor with a comic book shop and arcade and a deli all at the same time. You will see sandwiches on the menu called the Pikachu, Ned Flanders, and Bart Simpson. You will see Chewbacca fries along with the Spider-Man fries and the vegan Sailormoon fries. I got the Captain Boom Halal Fried Chicken, Boom Boom Sauce, Cheddar Cheese and Crave Sauce on a roll. It was tasty and a bit crunchy and had lots of flavor. It's one of the best Halal chicken sandwiches I had. If you crave a fried chicken sandwich then Crave Subs is the spot. One of my biggest pet peeves is when restaurants reduce the guality or quantity of their meal to cut costs while charging premium prices. I will say I didn't mind paying a few dollars more for their subs in the past. I went there today for the first time in a couple of years, ordered a regular size basic ruben sandwich (no add-ons) and was ok paying nearly $18 dollars for just the sandwich until they handed it to me. what I got was a small 6" sub. When did their subs shrink?? in this economy we are all struggling. I get it, things cost more but Craves' owner is not doing his patrons a service by charging them premiums while cutting back on the meals. If you're ok paying that much for a shrunken sub, more power to you. I l, however, will not be going back there.

The guy behind the counter was super friendly and offered us a sample of one of the flavors to try which I thought was a nice gesture. To my surprise, my favorite ended up being the saffron, though rose petal with pomegranate and sour cherry with pastachio were close seconds. Not sure if they were having a bad day, and we came on the wrong night, but that should not be any excuse. I use to frequent their old location, and have yet to go back since they moved. First attempt at the new location, I tried to come with 2 girl friends for an early lunch on a Monday at 11am. Their hours say they open at 10:30am, but it was 11:20am, and their doors were locked and the people inside said they were closed. Second attempt was on a Sunday evening at 6pm. We were 2 families totaling 8 people. We told the hostess/server our party size, and almost immediately, she did not seem too happy about it. That is when the attitude began. We looked around, and noticed that there were about 2 or 3 other tables of 2-3 people dining, so it was not like they were busy. We were really taken back by her reaction and tone, which made us worry about the service the rest of the night. We got seated, looked at the menu, and let her know we were ready to order. We were curious and had a few quick questions, such as which is popular and which type of meat comes in the plate (because it did not specify), but her responses were very rude. She even tried to give an attitude saying we could not change what comes on the plate, when in fact we were just adding to the order. She was just so quick to try to find a problem to speak on that she did not realize it was an addition. I started to get upset. I truly tried to keep my calm, but it was really hard with the way she was speaking. Food took pretty long to come out even though they were not busy. Good thing we were not in a rush. We noticed that the people next to us ordered before us, but our food came out first, so we felt bad. Then when their food did come out, I believe something was wrong, so they had to wait a little more. Although the food was decent, the service ruined the entire experience. For that reason, I would not go back.
