Best Pakistani food in Berkeley! This place has been around for years, and I am impressed at how consistent they keep the quality of their food. Being Pakistani myself, I am a tough critic of Pakistani restaurants and I have tried several in this part of the Bay Area. Kabana is definitely at the top when it comes to authentic Pakistani food. Now on to the food! This was my first time ever ordering the Plain Paratha, as it's very hard to nail a paratha, especially if you're like me and used to amazing street food parathas from Pakistan. I'll just say I'm so glad my dad convinced me to order and try it! It was unbelievably delicious and tasted authentic, so flaky, buttery on the inside and crisp on the outside, I was in high calorie heaven. It tastes great with chai or with a Chicken Karahi. The plain paratha is a must order when you go, you won't be disappointed! I also tried their mango lassi which was delicious, just wish it was colder. I'm a pescatarian so I ordered the Paneer Tikka masala instead of the chicken, and it was made very well. It tasted delicious with the fluffy garlic naan and dipping the paratha in that sweet sauce tastes so yummy! I do love spice so I think the tikka masala would taste amazing if it was a tad bit spicy with less cream, that would make it 5 star dish. My family and I love this place have been coming here for more than a decade. FYI if you're a goat fan order the Goat Palao (a goat bone broth infused rice dish with goat pieces), my parents couldn't stop raving about it. I couldn't help but notice the reasonable prices, presumably targeted to cash-strapped UC Berkeley students, which of course, made me wonder how good it could possibly be. This used to be our go-to place for Pakistani food - the flavors and food were outstanding. However, in the last year or two, the food has undergone a shift in quality: the dishes now lack the same punch of flavor and spice. We ordered the palak paneer and it seemed dry and not very tasty. The chicken curry was 3 pieces of chicken bone with no meat so a bowl of goopy sauce. Aloo begun was bland. The owner was in the kitchen so we were puzzled as to why the food has changed so much. While the service was never outstanding, the switch to lady servers has not necessarily been positive - they are less attentive and less friendly than the old crew. The one positive is that the Wells Fargo bank is closed so you can park in the lot next to the restaurant. read more

I really enjoyed my takeout dinner from Kabana!! The restaurant was busy on a Saturday night which was a good sign to me. The staff is friendly and prompt. The food was ready for pick up when they said it would be too (25 minutes for pick up). I tried the chicken tikka masala, palak paneer, regular naan, garlic naan and basmati rice. Everything was great!! The garlic naan is incredible the perfect combination of fluffy bread with a great crispy crust on the edges and bottom. I ordered palak paneer, tandoori naan and mango lassi on a Wednesday evening. The food was ready on time. However, the food tasted very mild and rather bland; I didn't really taste spices or chili in it and it really just tasted like spinach/greens and adding raw onions on it didn't really help with the flavor. I've passed by this place hundreds of times and decided to try it based on a good review somewhere. It was something about it being a favorite of Desi taxi drivers. So I ordered my favorites chicken tikka masala and seekh kebab and garlic naan and a couple of other things to go. I was very disappointed with the portion of chicken in the tikka masala. There were just some small slivers like it was a soup. Ridiculous. They would never have served that to someone dining in. Also the seekh kebab was very dry. I suggest to the owners pay a visit to Shah in Sunnyvale my favorite Pakistani restaurant and observe their portions of chunks of chicken in the tikka masala and how the seekh kebab isn't dry. I will not be going back to this place. Be careful of this place if you order to go. read more

Kabana is a Berkeley establishment. This restaurant has been around for many years. It sits on University Avenue, which is quite busy. But parking is typically available within 1 or 2 blocks. I typically go for the $8.99 for vegetarian entrees. These are the best deal on the menu. Add some basmati rice for an addition $3 and you have a large meal. I usually end up taking some home. Its a lot of food. And its filling. On my last visit the owner served me. We chatted a bit and he said that COVID had decimated his revenue. He also said that his input costs had gone up significantly. They are open for inside/sit-down dining. When I was last there, there were only 2 patrons in the entire restaurant. Big portions here, very open dining area. There's easy street parking, best to stay off university ave and use the residential areas parallel to it. The plates/ bowls of food were pretty big, ideal for 2 people. I liked the complimentary side salad they give us. The lamb kofta was tasty! I enjoyed their naan too. Their sauces on the table were also really good, we pretty much emptied them. The one let down was that we told them extra spicy for our food but it wasn't very spicy at all so next time we'll say more or add more sauce. The Karhi Lamb and Tenduri Fish are some of the best tasting food I have ever had. Keep in mind the fish has bones in it and the lamb is spicy. Everything else is good too, but please order those.
