Berkeley's street parking is at a premium. We were heading closer to campus but could not find a space- the cars were lined up on both sides of the street like lines going into the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland. Yelp was our resource until finally we decided on any restaurant we could find parking within walking distance. To our surprise, we ended up a block away from our hotel and a parallel parking space was available if we did a U-ey. It was good fate. It said Pakistani food and my daughter said let's give it a try. To our delight the menu listed food we were familiar with some of their names since we are novice fans of Indian food. We chose ones we knew and liked. By far the garlic nan bread, 2 orders came out large, puffy and so tasty. The tikka masala was more spicy than we are used to but we cleared all the plates. We really didn't know what to use the green sauce which was brought out in a tiny dish. When I asked one of the men he said mint. Hubs was affected by the spicy- ness like he is for Korean food, but the other two of us enjoyed and were fine. I always order a mango lassi since it helps squelch any spicy hotness for me. Food came out fast, tasty & n generous portions. People kept arriving at the restaurant. The 3 men only spoke if they needed to. The water was tap not iced. I squirted some lime in it and it tasted good. It is not one of those places that drops the check on your table before you are done. We needed to ask. When one in your group says no Mexican and one says not Italian, this turned out to be a good serendipitous choice after all. read more

Amazing Pakistani food! Meat is cooked and spiced to perfection here. I overeat every time I come (visiting the nearby sari shops), the food is too delicious. THE BEST FOOD I HAVE HAD IN A WHILE! The chicken Boti is insanely good: grilled to juicy perfection, amazing spices, just hot enough to feel it, but doesn't overpower the awesome flavor. Typical order: - Tikka masala, Garlic naan & Tandoori chicken leg (Order comes with side garnish: red onion, cucumber & small container of green sauce) Tikka masala infused with plenty spices, curry, plenty of chicken bits, very rich. Garlic naan comes in foil to keep it moist, airy & buttery, some pieces are more flavorful than the other, possibly from uneven sauce coating. Tandoori Chicken Legs is charred to perfection, good portions and tender. How to eat: Tear desired Garlic naan, strip pieces of Tandoori chicken leg & place on naan, wrap naan around chicken like baby in bundle, dip in Tikka masala sauce & Enjoy! The red onion & cucumber is a treat to eat after each bite (TIP: squeeze lime/lemon over red onion to decrease the spice or hot breath, whatever suits you). The small green sauce is a dash of Spicey chimichurri like consistency to add to masala sauce, if needed or not or eat it on its own. Overall I always enjoyed my orders here. Kabana is the absolute yummiest Pakistani restaurant in the entire SF Bay Area. We have been coming here since 2004 and I have yet to find anywhere else who can match the speed of the Interceptor Mateys. I recommend the palak paneer, tandoori chicken, the classic chicken curry and if you're really starving get the chicken tikka masala to boot. Our first time here and im already thinking when to go back for the next round Parking - we parked in the wells fargo parking but there is also ample street parking around it. Reservation - is not needed unless you are a group of 6 or more. They have about 15 tables and 3-4 servers so very well serviced. Food - loved their chicken tikka masala (not spicy but definately flavorful) - 1 portion can serve 2. We also tried lamb seekh kebab (spicy) and loved it with nan They serve complimentary fresh cut red onions, cucumber, lemon and mint/coriander chutney which was really yummy $ - Very easy on the pocket plus friendly and quick service. I never had Indian food before, but I knew the best places would probably be in Berkeley! Inside there's a TV in the back and on that day they were playing Bollywood music videos which I thought really added to the authenticity of the decor! There were pictures of the major places to visit in India hanging on the walls and it was very clean inside. Service was okay. We asked questions about certain dishes but because of the language barrier, it was a little difficult. We ordered two garlic nans (which were the size of big plates), palaak paneer (spinach with cheese), tandoori chicken, masala chicken, and these lamb kabobs. My family enjoyed the lamb kabobs, they said it tasted like sausages. My favorite would have to be the spinach with cheese dish - I just really love spinach. Everything else tasted really good! It's so hard for me to describe the flavors because it's so different than what I'm used to. There's always a hint of spiciness in these dishes and everything is a little..wet haha. The portions however, were a little small. The chicken masala dish only had 4 pieces of little chicken bits and my family of four had one each....at least there was enough sauce to dip our nan in? Overall: I'm glad I had a good experience here, eating Indian food for the first time. We had intended to go to a tapa place near by, but I found a parking spot right iin front of this place, so we decided to give it a try. It was 20 min before their closing time, and the owner told us we have to take the food to go. I turned around to leave, and he called us back to tell us if we order right away he will "let us" dine in. I should have just taken off from his offensive and demeaning behavior, but we were just too hungry. After we ordered, we started noticing everything that bothered us with health and safety of this establishment. NO One in sight was wearing a mask inside the restaurant. No one in the kitchen, nor the cashier or the wait staff. We were pointed to sit at a table , and I ran my sanitizing towelette over the glass on top of the table...It was disgusting. So there were quite a few reviews about this place giving bad service to people who aren't Indian, Pakistani or White, and all I can say is I'm neither of those races and was basically ridiculed and shamed because I asked for my food to be mild. I came here on a friend's recommendation. Later on when I mentioned to my friend about my experience, she told me that she had actually never ordered directly from this place before, it was always her Indian co-worker who ordered and spoke to the owner / manager in Hindi. That makes a lot of sense to me now. My clue at how bad I would be treated should have been when the owner / manager was extremely rude to the customers in the restaurant and I was in line to order. To one customer who said he ordered the fried chicken, the manager said no, you ordered the curry chicken. Customer says no, it's the fried chicken, and manager insists it's the curry chicken. To another customer who wanted to add additional items to his order, the manager says no, next time, because if he adds the items now, it'll take another 20 minutes for his food to arrive. Oh okkies, weird reasoning. Dude's just trying to give you business. The one that should have made me walk out but didn't yet was when a pick up order came in -- I assume the caller asked how are you doing? Because the manager answered -- "You don't have to ask me how I'm doing, why you ask me how I'm doing, you're just wasting my time. Just place the order." At this point, I was basically WTF, but silly me, still didn't walk out and thought hey, I'll give them a chance, it's a restaurant business, small business owner. The kicker that made me walk out was when I ordered my food and asked for it mild, and the manager says to me -- "What? We don't do anything mild! You can't eat it mild, it comes with spices. We don't do such things." So I said fine, just please cancel my order and I told him you're really rude to me and everyone else, and I just walked out. I don't take crap like that. You can tell me nicely if your sauces are pre-prepared and you can't change the spicy levels, but my husband and I aren't novices to Indian food, we eat it all the time and we've never had issues ordering it mild. You don't need to shame or ridicule someone for not ordering food that you deem is up to your standards. Pretty sad, never got to try the food, but I won't allow myself to be treated that way because you're condoning that rude behavior. Was here and had their takeout recently. Phone order was bungled and man on receiving end never bothered to ask me whether I wanted light or dark meat when I ordered tandoori chicken. What resulted was a super long wait for the food, because that qtn was only asked when arrived to pay, instead of the food being baked in the tandoor. Ugh Naan and roti were very very good. Pretty OK Indian food. Compared to Indian restaurants in Fremont, I would say this place could be better. The price is very tricky though. You may think that the dishes are relatively cheap because they're mostly under 10. However, the portion is small so I guess that's why the price would look attractive to someone who is trying to save money. Although portion is small, it will still fill you up. A friend and I ordered the fish tandoori, chicken tikka masala, one garlic naan, and one order of rice. There were only like 4-5 medium pieces of chicken and 4 pieces of fish. I think after tip and tax, it came out to be around $15 per person. Food was yummy though! I liked dipping my garlic naan in that chicken tikka sauce. Mm mm. I swear I scraped every last drop of that curry sauce. It felt less oily than most places so that's good! The fish tandoori was alright for me. My friend liked it. I'm not a big fan of tandoori. I much rather prefer Indian curry! Fast service though so props for that. They are also generous with napkins. So even more plus! BUT, the water tasted nasty. I usually am not picky with water; I straight up drink tap water. This is my FAVORITE Pakinstian food spot. Notice I didn't say restaurant. This is their 2nd location and it's much bigger than the previous. I did go with a neighbor who is of Indian decent but that was over 10 years ago, now I go by myself. I'll eat in but order to go mostly. I've never ever received any treatment that I felt mistreated because of my race. They smile when I come in and help me with my pronouciation of the food I order. Everytime EVERYTHING is so tasty like home made soul food. Keep in mind, I've never go to the bathroom and everyone who cooks and serve are men. Not that should mean anything but most of us have brothers who weren't the cleaniest but the best cooks. They have 4 lunch specials with a Veg, Chicken, or Lamb Curry ($7) or Lamb Seekh Kabab ($6) which come with your choice of rice or naan. My boyfriend and I went here to have dinner on a date night. He's Black, I'm white. We ordered, then my boyfriend went outside to smoke. When he came back in, the man behind the counter yelled at him aggressively to get out. He shouted and pointed. It was humiliating. Someone else on staff pointed to me still seated at the table, and he realized he was with me, and sort of mumbled an apology but it was really insufficient given the yelling. We felt extremely uncomfortable, an older female family member kept looking at us with a look of disapproval on her face, so we took our food to go. The man behind the counter said he yelled because it was "a misunderstanding". He said my boyfriend "looked happy" and so he "thought he was drunk". That is of course not what happened. This establishment is run by a racist. We won't be back. My order was also wrong but that really doesn't matter in tge context of everything else. These owners should be ashamed. read more

I ordered paneer makhani through door dash. The order through door dash was smooth and I got to the place at 9:10 pm. Once I get there, I realize the door is locked. The owner opens the door and hands me the food but tells me the restaurant closes at 9 pm. Neither door dash or yelp show it closes at 9 pm. The owner refused to accept that it says the restaurant closes at 9:30 pm online. I was just happy I got my food. Now about the food: I get home, hoping to pounce on my rich flavourful paneer makhani. As soon as I take the first bite, my excitement was crushed. The paneer makhani tastes like someone took tomato basil soup and added paneer to it. There was no flavour of cashew and the rich makhani (cream) in the food. It was 3-4 pieces of paneer with tomato basil soup. Overall: I am disappointed by how the owner blamed me for arriving late and was not open to check Yelp & updating hours. The wait for them to bring our order seem long but you get what you wait for when the food is "home made". If you are in a hurry to eat stop reading this review now, put on some very dark shades, and get to Kabana before there is a line. OK you have not left yet and are still reading. I warned you. Service was OK- not great. Waiter didn't speak that much English or had a mumbling problem. You don't lose a point for that in my book as long as I get what I ordered. Now next is what might seems a glaring problem and would normally make me deduct boo coo stars. THE PLACE IS DIRTY. It is dirty when you park your car in their parking lot. It is dirty when you stand at the front door and look to see if you really want to go in. Our table was not wiped off properly even though the place was not busy when we arrived. The interesting thing about most of the dirt is that it looks as though it has been stuck on the stove and the walls and hear and there for so long that it is glued there. It is part of the place. The ambiance, if filth and ambiance can be in the same room. The dirtiness' it is the mortar that holds the place together and is what that lets you thing you are in a real Pakistani kitchen, or if you are me - in your loving Mother's not so clean kitchen. There is something splashed on the wall about 15 feet above the kitchen area. Not food really but some splashed stain that who can imagine how they managed to get that mess way up there. You look when you go there. You will see it there if you visit. I guarantee it will still be there as it has been probably since the 50's. So basically the place made me feel comfortable as if the dirt would not end up in my food and if it did, that was meant to be and would add to its authenticity.
