Curry with chicken, tandoori bites, garlic naan, samosa, Bhindi Masala
Marie B.

The chicken curry is a must order, I haven't been able to find anything close to it at any other Indian restaurant. It's a very flavorful spicy tomato sauce. The tandoori bites are amazing and the garlic naan and samosa are so soft. We also got the ginger turmeric lemonade which is just the right amount of spicy. It's mostly an order out place but they do have a few tables if you want to eat in

Plain naan - Two pieces of naan bread with a lightly toasted surface are placed on crumpled paper, showing uneven browning and soft texture.

I am really late writing this review, but I ordered takeout from Taava Kitchen after seeing they were participating in Oakland Restaurant Week. I got saag paneer, paneer tikka masala, plain naan, and vegetable samosas and requested for a mild spice level. (They were out of mango lassi at the time, which I'd been hoping to get.) It was a decent amount of food for the price. I see that Taava now is on the Too Good to Go app as well. The samosas were a bit spicy for me as someone who has a pretty weak spice tolerance. The paneer tikka masala was really tomato heavy (more so than my preference), I felt it could've used more dairy to balance out the flavor. The saag paneer was alright, but I wished both the paneer tikka masala and saag paneer had more paneer in it. The naan was fine, nothing particularly stood out to me about it.

I've been on the hunt for a go-to Indian spot and I think I've found it in Taava Kitchen. My daughter and I stopped in for takeout on a Saturday night and watched everything being prepared. We ordered widely (I may have gone a touch overboard given we're a family of three): Daal makhani Chicken tikka masala Chicken korma Momos Samosas Kebab Naan All of it packed a flavor punch and the items I ordered medium spicy for my husband and me were exactly that. He told me the chicken korma was just what he was looking for. There are a few tables inside for very casual dining but be prepared to keep your jackets on if you visit in the winter months (it's cold inside!).

Taava Kitchen is currently one of many vendors in Forage Kitchen. Order at counter. Food cooked to order. Eat in or take out. Minimal decor. Offerings (halal Indian & Pakistani): starters, lunch box, small plates vegetables, grills, curries, rice, breads, desserts, drinks. Eats: lunch box (16.50) price not listed. -choose lunch box cuz undecided. One entree, one Vegetable, rice & naan. -price is calculated by what's ordered. Rice was fluffly, tasted the usual, pairs well with curry & vegetable ordered. Naan biggest ever seen. Tastier than the usual. rogan josh is a Kashimiri dish made with regional chilies, herbs & pieces. Lamb pieces semi-tender/juicy. Curry had a kick. Baingan Bharta (eggplant) was a blend, not whole veggies. Interesting taste with added peas. 4 ish stars. lst time for both eats. Worthy! Yummy!

Kabob plate, 2 item plate with lamb vindaloo, chicken korma and rice, daal, and garlic naan. - A table with Indian dishes including naan, curry, and rice, along with soup and a drink, with a person sitting nearby.

Food is very fresh, made to order, and delicious. A neighborhood find of a restaurant that opened less than a year ago. Service is fast and friendly. The naan is so good when dipped in the daal. I had the 2 items plate with lamb vindaloo, chicken korma, rice and plain naan. My daughter had the kabobs, moist and very tasty, and also the garlic naan. All food is takeout, but they might allow you to sit on the table in the front. Definitely we be coming back to try the Chicken Tikka Masala and other foods. 5 stars is well deserved!

Two delicious of hot chai - A hot chai in a paper cup is placed on a wooden table, with a person holding another cup of chai nearby.

Absolutely delicious: served piping hot the way I like it, spiciness (medium plus) was perfect, just enough to form some sweat on my forehead without burning my mouth. Huge portions--we each took home a third of the meal and I can't wait to eat the rest in the morning. The place was nearly empty, and it was very easy to converse. The service was accurate, fast, and friendly. Total before tax and tip was $37.15. I think you should eat there before people discover what a great place it is and you can't get a table!

Papadom- served with tasty sauces Chicken tikka masala- all down to personal preference, this is a very sweet/tomato heavy flavor profile, not very spicy (we got medium level). Would definitely recommend spiciest level. Naan- average Coconut rice- delicious. Kind of a sticky texture, very strong flavor that paired well with the chicken and salmon. Tandoor salmon- great flavor, served with some roasted vegetables which were tasty. Slightly overcooked but with the fresh lemon juice and rice it wasn't too noticeable. The service was fine, atmosphere pretty lowkey but nicely decorated and clean. Will definitely return to try more dishes and figure out which suit our tastes the best.

When I approached the front counter, the lady present was very standoffish with me. I informed her of why I was there and she asked my name for the order. Upon giving her my name she then glared at me and literally asked me to recite my entire order lol! I showed her my online receipt in which she then insisted I still tell her my order. She brushed away my receipt and let another customer cut in front of me. Interestingly, the customer told her his name and she retrieved his order with no issue and was very friendly with him. To note, I was the only Black person present at that time. When I inquired as to why that customer wasn't asked to recite his entire order, she grinned and said that he's a "regular" and that I was "new." She went on to let a few other customers cut in front of me. I then asked for my money back in which she refused to return. Even when I asked for the manager, she said he was very busy. I made several requests for this resulting in her saying no and refusing to return my money. I then noted to her I'm calling the authorities in which I did. Furthermore, while servicing some of the other patrons, she would speak in another language with them while they looked at me and start laughing and staring me down. Eventually, the manager came out. He presented himself professionally and upon explaining what occurred he apologized and said it was unacceptable. He even offered me a drink with my meal and asked that I please accept the order instead and wanted to make things right. I took him at face value and said fine. While the situation was remedied, I definitely will not be returning to this restaurant. I researched some of the other reviews and came across several where other Black patrons have had similar racially motivated experiences here. That tells me there's a common practice of racism here. I refuse to support a business where this kind of behavior is tolerated. I have zero tolerance for bigots of any kind. Overall, the experience was a waste of my time and very dehumanizing. To hate someone you don't even know simply because of their skin pigmentation and ethnicity is irrational at best and bad for business especially in a place like Oakland where it's multicultural. My advice would be to not support this establishment. I especially advise any Black patrons not to come here as they clearly have issue with anyone who is simply Black, despite not knowing them as a person. Don't give your money, nor your valuable time, to hateful individuals who dehumanize others. All in all, this place gets a thumbs down.

First, the customer service set the tone. The first server who greeted us was very rude, nonchalant, and standoffish. It honestly felt like we were bothering her just by being there, which made the experience uncomfortable from the start. As for the food, this is definitely not your typical Indian food. The flavors were very different from what we're used to, and not in a good way. My niece absolutely loves Indian food -- we eat it pretty regularly -- but she did not like her dish at all. None of us really enjoyed our meals. We even spoke with the manager about it because we were trying to be reasonable. We explained that the food just wasn't something we could eat and wanted to see if there was any way to resolve it. The manager told us there was nothing he could do because we had already ordered the food, so we ended up paying for meals that we barely touched. If you look at the pictures, it probably looks like we didn't eat much of anything. That's because we really didn't. The only things we were able to eat were the naan and some of the rice. Even the rice didn't come with the meal and had to be ordered separately. Another thing worth mentioning is the portion sizes. The dishes looked more like appetizer portions rather than full meal portions, especially for the price. Between the unfriendly service, the unusual taste of the food, and the fact that we had to pay for meals we didn't even eat, this was not a great experience. Unfortunately, this is not a place we would return to.

UNDERRATED Indian food and a must visit in Rockridge!…read more My family and I visited for dinner on Friday at 7:30pm. Only one other table was seated outside (they have heating lamps!), but we sat inside because it was cold out. After we ordered, staff started our meal with a complimentary order of the papadam with mint chutney. Very thoughtful! Staff also checked on us frequently throughout our meal and answered any questions we had regarding our food. FOOD: ~Appetizers~ Papadam: comes with mint and cilantro chutney! perfectly light and crispy (a tad on the salty side though) and complemented the cool, refreshing chutney well. 4/5 Chicken Samosa: not my fave due to personal taste (my family enjoyed these!), but they were PACKED with chicken which is awesome!! 3/5 Dahi Puri Chaat: me and my sister's favorite of the apps we ordered! the tamarind chutney, garbanzo beans, chickpeas, chaat spices, and crispy outer shell combined in a delicious symphony of flavor and texture. would order again!!!! 5/5 ~Sides~ Garlic Naan: VERY garlicky, fave of the whole family (: 5/5 Goat Cheese Naan: goat cheese is more on the sour end. to me it balanced out the spice of the curries well, but my family weren't fans. 4/5 Basmati Rice: no complaints! good standard basmati rice. 4/5 ~Entrees~ Lamb Korma: creamy, mild, delicious. lamb was not gamey and paired pleasantly with the almost cheesy-tasting sauce. 5/5 Classic chicken curry: solid chicken curry. my least favorite of the dishes we ordered but delicious by Indian curry standards. 4/5 Butter chicken: my FAVORITE of what we ordered. sweet, creamy, tender, MMMM. this one includes golden raisins in the sauce which was totally unexpected and new for me but actually works really well! would very much order again 5/5 Chicken Vindaloo: amazing, flavor-packed sauce and perfectly cooked potatoes (YESSSSSSS). we got some pretty big pieces of chicken too!! would also come back for more ugh yes 5/5 I am DEFINITELY coming again! For our main, we went with the Yogurt Chicken Kabobs and a side of Narenj Pallow (saffron rice). Cocktail-wise we tried the Red Henna, Black Ink and the Pashtunwali #1. For the second course we ordered the Estrella Galicia Lagers. There's also a happy hour drink and bar bites menu in the bar & lounge area. Looks like those hours are geared towards 5-6:30p. Jaji shares 'they are a modern progressive take on Afghan cuisine and a modern love letter to Afghanistan.' The same owners have a sister restaurant also in Oakland called Parche off Broadway which serves contemporary Colombian cuisine. All in all, our meal was delicious and esthetically pretty. So many layers to our meal and deep flavors and a thoughtful approach. We were headed to a show or we would have probably ordered more. Def looking forward to exploring more from the menu like the picture worthy Osso Buco and dessert :) The cocktail menu is worthy of a trip in itself, and event space is equally as gorgeous. What a win for downtown Oakland! We took a ride-share as parking seems to be a bit tricky, although there are metered lots nearby.
