The pictures oversell the ambience and quality of food. The Chana was fine but Pakoras and Bhature were over fried and inedible. It's some sort of cloud kitchen for multiple restaurants, and not a sit down place. So, all the food was packed in to-go containers even when sitting down. Would not recommend or visit again. This is the best South Asian food in the East Bay, maybe tied with Vik's. They have Nepali food, too, not just Indian & Pakistani! We had the fenugreek leaves with paneer, and the chicken keema paratha with the chole bhature. All delicious. Staff are awesome and Nepali. read more

This place has been hands down my favorite desi halal food in Oakland/Berkeley area since it opened years ago. However today's experience was disappointing. Their location moved from Forage Kitchen to a kitchen take out spot so it left me and my out of town guests scrambling to find a place to sit and eat. The rice pilaf with veggies used to be my go to for kids, but today, that plus raita was so spicy! So kids couldn't eat anything but naan. The kabobs today were just chili peppered skewers of meat rather than the flavorful lamb kabobs we usually order. The biryani lacked the amazing flavors that made this place excellent. The butter chicken was solid but again, no flavors that rock your world like they used to. The matter paneer was tomatoe based instead of creamier. The naans were all solid (we ordered a variety including the stuffed naan). Overall, today the food was meh but I wouldn't go back. Not sure if the chef changed or new ownership happened. But since their location, food containers, and flavors have changed, I'm guessing something is off. read more

We've eaten twice at Taava Kitchen, separated by ~2 months - each time ordering the same meal combos consisting of Saag Chicken, Navratan Korma, Chicken Tikka Masala, and Aloo Gobi, along with rice and naan. Overall, the food was excellent. The chicken dishes were consistent and great between the two visits, while the vegetable dishes were surprisingly different (better the first time) - especially the Navratan Korma. On the second visit, it seemed like a mound of well-seasoned tomato paste with a few sad kernels of desiccated corn. I'm sure we'll eat there again, and will probably try other dishes in search of their best. Prices seem very reasonable, at least from my perspective. read more

The best indian food we've had. Our 12 year old is a very picky eater with annarrow palate. Doesn't like spicy food and a vegetarian to boot. Can't stand tomatoes. Imagine our shock as they plow through Taava Kitchen's delicious and rather spicy dahl. So they are still fixing up the renovations. Problem is that the dust is in the air an there isn't any sort of protection / divider / partition from keeping it floating over towards where they prep and cook the food. I ordered dinner Tiki Marsal over rice. Medium Hot Spicy. Extra sacue to coat al lof the meat and the rice. CAme with a giant misshaped Naan. It was home made with garlic and delicious. They kinda skimped on the sauce and rice. Also ordered a Lassi Yogurt. That was nice and fresh. Not sure it's worth $6 because I did not hear a blender in the background. Pre made or squirts out a defrosted plastic bag. Service was nice, but nothing special. I didn't have to wait since I was the only one there. Six employees and myself. Hmmmm.... The phone did ring three times in the 45 minutes I waited. I will go back and give them a sho again. Maybe have the same thing and beg for more sauce in rice assuring them it only costs them like $0.50 @ their cost. Maybe change it up though. Not sure. To be continued. read more

I ordered paneer tikka masala, potato Pattie's and paneer with potatoes. Chutneys were so flavorful on the Patties, the Tikka was some of the best I've had locally, that paneer was creamy but needed a little more flavor or spices maybe. I ordered mild everything. Cuz i don't know the base to a new to me restaurant. The Pattie's were crispy and fluffy inside and the tikka was buttery creamy goodness. Naan was cooked perfectly as well. Overall I think I've found my Oakland place for Indian. I normally go to Berkeley. I will give this another try to see if it's consistent. Highly recommend based off of tonight. read more

I've been going to Taava kitchen since it opened and the food was good the first time I had it. However I ordered recently and felt the food was lacking flavor. The chicken makhni tasted like straight up tomato sauce with cream, usually it's more flavored. I think this place is great but they need to work on some of the dishes flavoring. read more

This is my absolute favorite lunch spot. The food is amazing (the stuffed naan is wonderful and perfectly sized for lunch). Everyone who works there is so friendly. They make it feel very community focused and they really take note of you as a customer and what you in particular like. They are curious about your own tastes and make an effort to remember you, which is just lovely in itself. The outside seating area is also really lovely. Food is great, service... dishonest! So I found this lovely place and loved it, Especially with their Kheer. I order 7 online. And they called and said I would have to wait an hour for them to make more. Since I was in a rush and was already a minute away, I asked them to give me whatever is currently available, which is 3 orders. Since I used a 20% discount code on the previous order, the guy told me to retry ordering it online again since this place only takes online orders and to reuse the code to see if it works, and it didn't. But while putting in the new order without the discount code + a two dollar tip, my total came out to around 24$ and some change. So since the discount didn't work, the guy put in the order for me on his tablet WITH the 20% discount code and automatically added extra tip without asking me, the total came out to 25+ dollars. I didn't bother saying anything because I just wanted to get my dessert and leave. Again a dollar difference not much of a deal, although it defeats the purpose of the discount code in the first place! But I just recently checked out my bank account to make sure they refunded the first order which they did. But the total for the second order somehow came out to 29.66!! How does 7$ per kheer= 21$ + tax+ a 20% discount code= 29.66?! That's like giving yourself almost a 50% tip!!! I wanted to support this place but these are dishonest practices, plus they use to make it requirement to charge people 50 cents for their biodegradable containers which they just removed recently... thank god! I tried Taava Kitchen last night for the first time and had an amazing experience with the staff and food. I got 2 different types of naan (garlic and mozzarella) and both were to die for. I also got the tandoori cream pepper chicken which I have never heard of before but it was incredible. The staff were so friendly and made picking up my order quick and easy. Definitely the best Indian food in all of the Bay. It's mostly a to go place, but there is some seating including a nice outside patio area. If you come on a Saturday, it's next to all the galleries so view art and eat well. It shares the location with a wonderful Jamaican chef. Try the stuff naan, best daal takika imaginable (made fresh to order) and the Rogan lamb. This will become your favorite Indian restaurant. read more
