We ordered food from Marigold the other day and thought, overall, it was average. The one outstanding item was the lamb korma, but unfortunately the vegetable Samosa were so soggy and small that these two dishes canceled each other out. The sauce on the lamb korma was amazingly good. Nice and thick and extremely complex. The pastry on the Samosa was soggy and limp. They were very small, with little filling. The chicken tandoori was fine. Maybe a little skimpy in terms of portion size compared to other places, but decent. The chicken tikka masala had a very light sauce, in terms of color, and the chicken was generous. You could tell the restaurant uses very high-quality chicken breast. The dish was fine, but I like a richer, more deeply-flavored sauce. The chutneys from this place are very good! Will be sticking with our regular places, because they are slightly less expensive, with food that is above average. I don't like paying more for food that is just average with smaller portions and does not include rice-- which our regular places do. It was also a bit of a turn-off that we ordered the Samosa chaat, but received the Samosa, so we had to go through the hassle of getting a refund. read more

Shocked and amazed. Indian food was absolutely amazing. This place has zero curb appeal. It's even less glamorous once you walk through the door. But, oh my gosh, the food and service is fantastic. Paneer tikka masala was top-notch. Garlic naan, fantastic. Huge portion of rice. Although five stars, I do have a recommendation. Please make a few new clean photocopies of the menu. We ordered vegetarian takeout here several times. The food was always consistently good, the service was excellent. While I was waiting for my takeout order to be made, they were kind enough to offer some freshly made chai - such a pleasant experience and on top of that the chai was authentic, hot & made with a good balance of spices. They do have parking right in front, several spots. In case you were planning on eating there, they do have some limited seating inside and right outside. Enough seating to happily dine in with 2-3 friends as I suspect most people use this join as a takeout spot. read more

Love the food, the calm atmosphere of the place, the owner and staff are kind and welcoming and food service is great as well! I love all the food dishes, especially tikka masala, aloo tikki chaat, samosa, saag and chana masala. The punjabi food dishes are very true to it's flavour and origins and I stick to this place for that. I don't find Saag available in most places, and it is the best winter dish because of the nutrients, so it is definitely a staple winter food to have (especially for all you anemic folks!) read more

I loved their version of veggie korma! And spicy is spicy (yay). I might ask for extra spicy next time. The chicken tikka masala was also yum. It reminded me of a squash soup I had. ***3.5 Stars*** Indian food in Temescal?! Welp... *ahem*: "It's about damn time!". The lack of Indian food restaurants around these parts is something serious. When I saw that this new Indian place had opened up in Temescal, my little heart skipped a beat. This is what I've been waiting for. Since I couldn't be out of the office for too long, I decided to order for to-go. Their menu is pretty legit. Prices are high but at this point in time, what ISN'T?! What's nice is that this place offers some really good lunch special deals. I'm always up for saving some coin, so I decided to take advantage of their lunch special. Ordered the chicken tikka masala and shrimp curry lunch and it came with basmati rice and butter naan. Their restaurant is super tiny and plain. It looks like they are still trying to get things together in there, but a few other people came in to pickup to-go orders, so I'm thinking that it's a good choice for Indian takeout. The guy at the register was pleasant but didn't seem to know much English, so it was a bit hard to ask him any questions. When I opened the bag, the aroma started to fill the room. Everything was nicely packaged and rationed. The butter naan was warm and soft and the rice was nice and fluffy. The shrimp curry was decent but definitely could have used more spices and they only put 3 pieces of shrimp in it. I mean, I know it's lunch portions but dayum! Can I at least have a full serving? It was basically all sauce. But the real winner here was that chicken tikka masala. The chicken tikka masala was lit! It was so damn rich and creamy. The flavor just took ahold of my mouth. I wanted to dip everything in that damn tikka masala! So, soooo good! And luckily they weren't as skimpy with the chicken as they were with shrimp. To be honest, their chicken tikka masala is what made me push them from a 3 to a 4 stars. It was so incredible, but without it, this place is easily a basic 3. I'm planning to dine in soon, so hopefully the dine in experience is much better. But, that chicken tikka masala is definitely worth coming here for. How much food coloring should be in mango lassi? None! How much flavor is in the microwaved rice? None! How many items in a to go order should be microwaved? None, and yet all of them were, including the rubber Naan. Sag Paneer medium spicy had no flavor or spice in it. Yellow lentils also very little flavor. Gulab Jamin dry in the center. Let's start with the fact that the food was SO YUMMY! We got the onion rings and potato cakes to start. And veggie/chicken Korma with naan, all great. As a vegan, I was so glad they had plenty of options for me. My friend has a gluten allergy and they checked with the kitchen (samosas aren't actually gf like the menu said, but many other things are because they use chickpea flour). The folks who work there were as friendly as the food was good. They talked with us about all the menu options, checked up on us throughout the night, and were patient when we were the last table in the restaurant as they closed up. (Sorry!) The space itself was unassuming from the street, and the simple atmosphere let the people and food steal the show. We'll definitely be back! read more

This place has really tasty Indian food made with care. I have tried the daal mahkani, chana masala, saag paneer, mixed tandoori, chicken tikka masala, rice, and garlic naan. I have found the tandoori to be a bit dry (maybe juicier at the restaurant since I'm always doing takeout), but I stick with the curries which are all delicious. We usually get mild for my son, so I can't speak to the spice level for those who like it spicy. The portions are also good for the price. I also appreciate the family that runs this business. Very nice guy at the counter. He has been cool with me bringing my own glass tupperware containers so that we don't accumulate more plastic (can't handle all the plastic takeaway containers in my life!). Since moving to Oakland, we've been looking for an Indian restaurant that is not fancy or pretentious, but just good. I think we've found it in Marigold Indian Eats, only a few blocks from our house. We had Tikka Masala with tofu, which they regard as a dish for vegans, but we assured the waiter that we were not vegans and would prefer the traditional sauce with cream. It was delicious. We also shared a Shrimp Madras, which is a spicy coconut sauce. It was excellent, although I preferred the tofu dish. We also had a bhatura, a deep fried white bread; basically a poori but with white instead of wheat flour. It was not at all greasy and very delicious. Also very big! We had enough food for 3 people and took a fair amount home. This is a completely unpretentious, neighborhood place. We'll be back. read more

I was a bit let down since there are so many glowing reviews. Maybe my expectations were too high? The aloo gobi was really good, but very expensive. For this price, I expected a larger portion. I did enjoy the taste of this dish. The samosa was extremely salty, though. Never in my life have I had samosa and wished that someone poured a ton of salt on it, but thats what they do here. Marigold has very solid Indian food and has become a go-to for my husband and I. They do free delivery in the area if you order $20 worth of food so we love to order the lunch special with samosas, most often butter chicken and saag paneer. We were so upset. I went with my friends to pick up an ordered and we got an ordered with such a terrible way with dirty oil of the fryer. No doubt The lady on the counter was so nice to us and it was a great service. They fried our food in dirty oil. The food here is really good. Dance in your seat good. I could eat there everyday good. Few things I haven't had before like the lemonade with cumin. I would't want one every time, but I will get another. The coconut rice is a definite upgrade. I like how simple the restaurant is. I ordered delivery from Marigold bc they have a lot of gluten free options. We enjoyed what we ordered and still could've used a bit more heat and spice. I ordered medium and was surprised how light the heat still was at that level. We also tried their samosas and I'm a happy camper when restaurants include some mango chutney. So after I ate that l, my gluten free meal attempt was out the window, so then I enjoyed the garlic/herb naan. The lamb and chicken in our dishes were filling and tender. In our order 3 entrees, 1 order of rice, samosas, and two types of naan. With all the service/delivery charges, things added up quite a bit, a little over $100 but at least we had enough left overs for two more meals. So all in all pretty good pricing. TLDR: Disappointing. Food was bland. Some dishes were ok. Some were not good at all. I enjoy trying out new Indian restaurants around Berkeley. This one had good reviews so I gave it a shot. Ordered: Paneer pakora, Aloo Tiki, Roghan Josh, Mutter Paneer, Chicken tikka masala, naan and rice. Ordered everything medium spicy. Paneer pakora was actually quite good so we were looking forward to the rest of the meal. The rest of the dishes did not have any spice. This might have been ok if the flavor was good but all the dishes were a bit of a let down. The dishes are not cheap (inflation?) so we were a bit disappointed to say the least. Tiny dining area in a nondescript strip mall with a laundry nearby. Came in, constant incense burning and it was agreeable. Good basic selection, we chose saag paneer and fish tikka with some sides. Pay at cashier but they bring it out. Cashier's English wasn't great but he did well enough to capture most of our order, probably didn't need that second naan anyway! The saag paneer was outstanding, subtleties tastes of spinach were perfect and the cheese was fine. Fish tikka masala was very good, though not as spicy as I expected for ordering "medium" (it was barely any heat at all). Mann excellent, rice fresh, papadams crispy and superb flavors. And their mango lassi was not at all cheap at $7 but probably one of the best I've ever had. All in all, fresh food and very good, a little pricey for the environment but the quality makes up for it. The closest taste to Indian food while not traveling to India. I have never been to India before so my taste for Indian food is based solely on the places I've lived. I can tell you this much. The food from this restaurant tastes very clean, low on sodium, and perfectly gluten-free. We've been waiting for this place to open for a long time so I'm very happy that it has finally come to fruition. We ordered the vegetable samosa chaat and the Lamb vindaloo. Both perfect in flavor, the food arrived hot and fresh (we ordered through door dash). We love the spice level and next time I will try something a bit more spicy. I haven't had very much spicy Indian food, so I'm very curious. We love that this place is so close to our home and we're very happy for the family that opened this restaurant. Please support them while they work through their first year! We can't wait to order more yummy food from here :) read more

It has potential. a) I'm super-excited about having an Indian restaurant in the neighborhood b) it was good, but I want it to be better. The good: * the saag paneer was perfectly creamy and the flavor was super-balanced. Could've used a couple more pieces of paneer, but overall: good. Room for improvement: * the chicken in the chicken tikka masala was a hair overcooked/starting to get dry * the veggie samosas were very, very spicy. We'd ordered them for the kid because the marketing copy on the website said that they were good for kids. This had made me assume that they were on the mild side. But: nope! The kid ended up eating some yogurt with naan and calling it a day. The adults split the samosas and we agreed they were on the spicy side. * the naan. I'd absolutely love to get buttery naan that's both warm and crispy and has a bit of elasticity. This naan was clearly fresh, but it had been put into aluminum foil too soon after having been made, so it had a steamed quality to it. I'd rather have it be in paper (with maybe a twist of aluminum at the bottom to keep butter from dripping) rather than encased in aluminum, which changes the texture dramatically.
