The stars were the samosa chaat, cauliflower bites, haaka noodles, and the naan. Samosa chaat could have used 2 samosas, and a little less of the sweet chutney. We are so excited to finally find a great Indian restaurant in the East Bay. When we feel like eating Indian, we usually head down to Fremont. It's nice to have something closer! The sauces are thicker, more flavorful, and made with much more care than what we usually get here. There are herbs baked into the chole bhature bread and garlic naan, giving those typically plain sides more complexity. The naan had a nice glaze of butter on it with the right amount of browning. Spices taste that they have been cooked before hand to bring out the flavors. So much attention to detail! Though we would typically request spicer options, we had our curries mild because we were eating with a preschooler, but he absolutely loved it! Stand out dishes for us were chole bhature, saag paneer (we usually order it as a filler vegetable for the kids, but this turned out to be one of our favorites), and bhindi masala (cooked down, flavorful, and okra was not slimy). As a plus, one of the owners of the restaurant came to say hi to our kid and we struck up a nice conversation. He seems like a genuinely cares about the quality of the restaurant and has high standards. The chef also came to say hi and chat, since we told him how pleased we were with the food. Servers are nice. Ambience is good. Service is quick. But most food items are average or below average. The actual food is 2/5. This is not Indian food. It's basically some westernized version of Indian food that's targeted more towards non-Indian audiences. And I'm not talking just about spice levels. The taste of most items itself does not quite hit the spot. If you are Indian and you know what actual Indian food is like, this is not the place for you. Hard pass. I've been here with my friends many times and we've given the place a few chances thinking we're ordering the wrong things maybe. But we've gradually just accepted that this isn't the place for us. My friends group is all Indian too and none of us is quite able to appreciate or understand the taste of the food at this place. read more

Jot Mahal was previously here for a bit and struggled, Chandi Chowk is now in and made the place pretty cute. It seems like most restaurants in this space get overlooked. It smelled delicious when we walked in and that convinced us we need to stay and eat. Some of the chaat was a bit different than other places, so I wouldn't try compare to Viks or other spots. The paneer masala was a bit too thick which was unusual, I think it needs to be thinned out. It tasted more like a very creamy veggie korma, good flavor but texturally not quite right and heavy feeling. Overall we enjoyed what we ate, the service was good, and we will be back to try more food. read more

i went for lunch . I ordered Dal , Nan and Chicken tikka masala. Dal was good except for excess salt . The Nan was mediocre. Perhaps they don't have a tandoori oven . In the midst of pouring rain, as an Indian, I wanted chaat, chai and pakora :) Came over and found piping hot, crisp, flavorful onion pakora (surprisingly not oily), cutting chai and Chole bhature. They don't have the pani puri yet but I will be back! Bhature were also non oily and slightly on the thicker side. Presented very well but no pics since we jumped on it. There's a LOT of Indian food in Berkeley. A lot of it is fine. There are two standbys I always go to because their food is exemplary--Viks and Udupi--but I'm going to have to Chandni Chowk to this list. This is literally the only new addition to my list for decades. We got the chole bhatura, dal fry, and baingan bharta along with one rice and one plain naan. Everything was a standout choice and, taken together, boasted different flavors and textures. I was leery of the baingan bharta because although I love eggplant, I have never found one with a medium level of spiciness that I can handle--most are too spicy--well, after 25 years of searching, I found it! The bhatura was a little thicker than I was used to, but gave a pleasant crispy crunch to contrast with the chickpea curry stew (I liked the chunks of ginger). The dal fry was everything I wanted in a dal, creamy while also vegan, and top-notch umami. Not very hot-spicy at all, but flavorful. I think kids would like that one. Vegans and kids would have a good time here. My spice-intolerant kid can't handle Viks but this would work. It came to a little over $20 per person before tax and tip, and a bit of leftover to take home. Decor and ambiance were good, and I liked the music. Someone at the table next to us was asking the serving staff about the playlist. Service was attentive while not being overbearing or hovering. They were thorough with letting me know about the dairy content, in case you are lactose intolerant. Ghee doesn't have much lactose, and the chole bhatura came with a small, separate amount of raita I ignored. I'm happy they get to level up from the food truck, and I hope their restaurant stays for a long, long time. read more

Finally, a great Indian restaurant in the East Bay! Chandni Chowk is a welcome and much-needed addition to the Berkeley, Rockridge area. From the moment you walk in, the décor and ambiance feel inviting, warm, and casual, with a lively street-food vibe that fits the name a famous street market area in Old Delhi. The space is clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully done. The restaurant was about three-quarters full when we arrived and filled up while we were there, which is always a great sign, especially on a rainy weekday night. The menu is easy to navigate, with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options clearly marked. As a vegetarian, I had no trouble finding plenty to order. Everything we tried was excellent, but standouts for me were the dal fry, the plain naan (so fluffy and delicious), and the aloo mattar -my absolute favorite. The samosa was exceptional as well, perfectly seasoned and crispy. I also appreciated that nothing was overly spicy. Everything we ordered fell in the moderate range, so you can actually taste the flavors, which is exactly how it should be. I can't wait to go back and explore more of the menu. We're so happy to finally have a local Indian spot that we can easily see ourselves visiting weekly. Highly recommend! read more

We just got 3 dishes for takeout and loved it - Lamb Vindaloo curry, Aslam Chicken, and Chole Bhature (chickpeas in curry with 2 purees, which is that puffy fried bread.) 2 orders of rice was more than enough for 3 people. It was all quite good. Even the mango lassies were especially flavorful. They are not inexpensive, but totally worth it. This space has changed hands a few times over the years (always Indian food), and this newest restaurant is by far my favorite. They've done a lovely job redecorating, the owner and staff are very warm and welcoming, and most importantly the food is fantastic. We tried our standard favorites for easy comparison (Chicken Tikka Masala Dal Makhani, Lamb Vindaloo, Saag Paneer, Samosas) and the dishes were flavorful, the protein was tender, and the portions were generous. I've gone twice now and had the cauliflower appetizer, Aslam chicken, bhatura chole, saag paneer, tandoori paneer , and a couple of naans. My favorites were the chicken, saag paneer and tandoori paneer. The decor is also a huge improvement over the previous place and the service was good. Food was absolutely delicious. We ordered the Dahi Puri chaat, which we loved and recommend everyone try. My partner says it's just like what's served in Delhi. Aloo gobhi was made perfectly and was my favorite thing on the table. We prefer gravies with no cream so ordered the chicken curry which had perfectly cooked chicken. Next time we will ask them to make it a little spicier, but that's just our preference! read more

Avoid the masala tea which while tastefully served in the correct clay container was a mere thimble and expensive at $5 each for me and my wife. had the aloo tikki chaat and chai today for lunch and it was so delicious! immediately my favourite south asian spot in berkeley/oakland. their fremont food truck is incredible too. its hard to find authentic south asian food in the bay that hasn't been watered down and made flavourless but chandni chowk's food was flavourful, fresh, familiar, and comforting. love that having your chai in a matka is an option too. im excited to be back and try the whole menu :-) read more
