Quantities served are generous. Don't skip the excellent naan bread. Our garlic naan felt and tasted fresh from the oven. It's good for tearing off pieces to help mop up curry sauces from your plate. I stopped by for dinner with a friend. This restaurant has a very homey vibe and the staff are friendly and welcoming. You can tell that they value their customers because of how they interacted with them. Our order: lamb tikka masala, paneer in tikka masala, basmati rice, rice pudding, garlic naan and cheese naan. Literally, EVERYTHING was delicious. I've never ordered lamb TM but this dish did not disappoint. The lamb was very tender and delicious. The rice had such a good aromatic taste and the cheese naan was so good, probably the best cheese naan I've ever had. My friend enjoyed the food as well. A bonus that takes this place to the next level is the chai tea that is self served up front. I just thought that added to the overall vibe and experience here. I used to love this place, not anymore. Been a customer for 15-20 years. Came here for lunch, and I was looking at the lunch menu and I asked the cashier if I can have chicken masala only. I guess he gave me the dinner entree with rice, but clearly I wanted the lunch special bc I was looking at the lunch menu- not cool. The food wasnt great, the chicken in the masala is a little tough and the sauce was a little bland and sweet. I've been here so many times and somehow am only now writing a review! My partner and I came for dinner on a rainy day and were pleased to hear they open until 9pm on weekday nights. The vibe of the place has always been really home-y - order at the front, grab some hot chai and water, food is brought out and pay at the end. The owners are also super friendly and will give you a recommendation on their specials for the day. I've also been here with large groups (up to 20 people) and the owners accommodate with seating. We love their chicken tikka masala, lamb vindaloo, and veggie curries. For our meal tonight we grabbed the cheese and garlic naan along with the Sada Bindhi (okra and veggie) dish. All were good, lamb is always great. Good amount of spice in the lamb vindaloo too. There are comparable places in South Berkeley by the Cal campus, but I prefer this location on college for the vibes and quiet setting. read more

Ordered lamb curry, shrimp tandoori, palak paneer, mango Lassi and 4 Naan. The shrimp were flavorless. The Naan never showed. Reminded. Didn't show again. Then when it did show, it had no flavor. Now, that was partially due to the fact that they didn't put ghee or butter on it, but the basic dough lacked flavor. The crest of my order was acceptable. So sad. The food was good and the portions were adequate. The lamb curry had a minimal amount of sauce, certainly not enough to enjoy with the rice. Because of this, I went up to the service counter and requested a small ramekin of extra sauce. The server brought it to my table without mentioning any cost associated, which I appreciated, because it's good hospitality to meet minimal requests like this. When I went to pay my check, he explained that he was adding $6 to the bill for the sauce. WTF? $6 for a few ounces of sauce? When I asked why, he looked puzzled and said he would charge me only $5. This is hands down the BEST Pakistani/Indian food in the Bay Area. I started coming here when I was an undergraduate at CAL, and 15 years later, it is still my favorite curry. Their rice is fluffy and delicious with a saffron flavor that makes it craveable. We always get the same thing: Chicken Vindaloo and Aloo Gobi. They are the ONLY restaurant we have eaten at that makes their chicken vindaloo in a bright yellow sauce. Most chicken vindaloo is in a red or brown gravy sauce. The bright yellow curry is BEYOND delicious. I used to buy five orders at a time and store them in my dorm so that I could eat this particular curry every single day! Now that I've moved down to San Jose, it's harder to get up to Berkeley to eat there, but when I do, I buy as many orders as I can and bring them home. They freeze and reheat perfectly (so does the rice). Also, though I have forgone naan in an effort to stay relatively fit, their naan is beyond delicious. I can't say enough good things about this place. I honestly don't know what I'd do if it ever went out of business. I've searched and tried various curry places all across the Bay and could never find that yellow chicken vindaloo. Special note: The older man with a mustache who works at the front cash register and takes your orders is (and always will be) one of the biggest draws for me. He is SO kind and SO thoughtful. And if you need other reasons to visit, just add delicious mango lassi, FREE chai, and a clean bathroom to your list. Truly a Berkeley institution!! read more

9/10 Our favorite Indian restaurant. My husband & I have been ordering takeout from here for the past 7 years. (We order from here at least twice a month) We love the food. Service has always been good. We do get the exact same thing every time. The nice older man at the register knows our order & is always very pleasant. Food Order: Lamb Tiki Masala- medium spicy White rice Cheese Naan (the cheese stuffed naan is my favorite & is a must have) Drink- Mango Lassi (my husband loves the mango drink) There has only been 1x that our order was not up to par...the sauce in the tiki masala was very light in color (it's normally deep orange in color) & when we tasted it, it lacked all its flavor. As if it was very "watered" down. We had already gotten home but I decided to call them anyway. They apologized offering to make a new one. Because it was only 10 mins away I decided to go back & pick up the new batch. They apologized for the inconvenience of me having to drive back & forth. The new batch was much better & tasted as it should. That was years ago & so far it's not happened again. This review has been long overdue but now all this thinking of it is making me crave it. Also, if you are down to try, grab some sourdough and eat it with the curry instead of rice/naan :P Finally decided to write a review for House of Curries, I am honestly surprise to see that their yelp start is only at 3.5. I've never ate inside the restaurant, but Doordash has made it possible for this place to be a regular local favorite in my household. We first heard about them from a friend, and once we tried them ourselves, we were hooked! At this point, we've tried their tikka masala, house curry, vindaloo, karahi, bhindi ghosht, rice pudding, and their lassis. Of course, we've tried different combination of their food with different meat. Also, we always ordered some garlic naan to go with the food. We always get 2 entrees, and we'll get 2 meals out of our food between 2 people, tho you do need to make your own carbs with the leftovers. Their food is always on point with the spice level on tack. I get the feeling that their food is super authentic (feel free to prove me wrong with another place in the bay area). One more tip, I highly recommend eating their curries with sourdough bread if you have that on hand, while the naans are great, but eating the curries with sourdough bread really brings out the flavor of the curry and the bread. The 1st visit was during weekdays and I had the pleasure to enjoy their lunch deal, less than 10 bucks for chicken tikka masala, lamb tikka masala, 1/2 naan and rice!!!! Btw, the chai was free!!! And the food portion was humongous!!! I had leftover despite being greedy and couldnt stop eating! I raved about how delissheeeedd it was to hubby and today we went back to have lunch. This time it was in the weekend, so they had no lunch deals, but then prices were still amazing and the portions were huge compared to other indian restaurants! We had the palak (spinach) lamb, chicken tikka masala, mixed veggies, 1 mango lassi, 1 rice and 1naan for just around $39...we went home with a box of leftover. Went in a Thursday night. Kinda busy. They offer indoor/outdoor seating. We ordered lots of food. Cheese naan,Garlic naan,Aploo naan - these are large dinner plate size. So good, fresh Chicken tiki Malala- was decent, did have a lot of sweet cream but chink was cool well. Not dry at all Chloe curry or some type- can't remember the name but it was good Veggies somas large and fresh Parking lot was smaller but places to park Staff was decent- they take orders and preparing your food. The food here is quite average and there was nothing exciting about the meal that I had here. Not sure why all of the UC Berkeley kids are raving about it. Maybe because it's convenient? Either way, I've had better. The only thing that this place has going for it really is the service. Stopped by for lunch one day as this place is located pretty close to work and it seems to always be poppin' with people inside. I guess you can say that I've always been really picky when it comes to Indian food. It's just always been a cuisine that takes a lot to wow me. With that being said, I wasn't really expecting too much to begin with. However, the gentleman at the front counter was really friendly. I told him that it was my first time here and he seemed eager to answer all of my questions. They have some decently priced lunch specials, but I was craving for shrimp and decided to try their prawn vindaloo. It's an entree so rice and naan come separately. I ordered some basmati rice to accompany it. They offer free chai tea with dine in orders. I love chai tea and theirs was really tasty. Everything is pretty much self service here. You grab your own utensils and to-go boxes, and they give you a pitcher of water to refill yourself at your table. You order at the counter and pay when you're finished. I like my Indian food pretty spicy and I ordered the prawn vindaloo spicy. Unfortunately, it wasn't really spicy at all.!It also lacked in flavor and seemed to be missing the traditional spices that I'm used to. I couldn't believe how bland it was. It also arrived lukewarm which didn't really help the situation. I thought the portion size was pretty small for the price. Everything was definitely was subpar compared to what I'm used to. Decent Indian/Pakistani joint. I've been here twice. My go to orders are achar ghosht, naan, and mango lassi. Their food is flavorful and reasonably priced. It's not the best I've had but deff get my cravings satisfied. I like that they have complimentary unlimited chai tea which is very nice. The restaurant is kind of self service so you have to grab your own silverware, to-go box, etc. That doesn't bother me much. Parking is a bit tough though. I got delivery from here this afternoon. It was really good and quite affordable. I got a beef/ lamb kebab, vegetable Tikka, and karahi chicken. The Karahi chicken used boneless thighs and was not greasy like many other places. The vegetable tikka had great flavor with lots of veggies. I asked for it to be spicy, and they both were. YUMMY! Bonus points for delivering the naan in a paper bag so it remains crispy, not wrapped in tinfoil and soggy. read more

I've walked by this place a million times and was curious to try. I got the sada bhindi and goat vindaloo. The bhinid were fine but quite excessively oily IMO, it actually doesn't take a ton of oil to make good bhindi! The goat curry sauce was nice, not amazing, and not recognizably a vindaloo in terms of flavors, more just a generic "curry" - can't taste any vinegar, not very hot, etc. And I did not like finding little bits of bone in the sauce. The chai was pretty nice, though. I was going to give this two stars but the price point is pretty good so relatively to price I'd say three. I have ordered from this restaurant several times and they're always consistent. Delicious chicken tikka masala with the perfect amount of spice. I always add a side of their homemade garlic naan and jasmine rice. Unfortunately, most items on the menu are a la carte and need to be added to whatever main dish you order. I've had the samosas twice - the vegetarian version is good but lacking in something I can't quite figure out. I wish it came with a side of plum sauce but the reddish sauce they send with them is pretty good. You order at the front, seat yourself, they bring out your food, and you pay after. The portion sizes are really filling. The palak paneer (cooked spinach and cheese) was very average, but it definitely hit the spot, in combination with the naan. My friends are strong believers that this location tastes significantly better than the other Berkeley location on Durant, but I've only tried the palak paneer at both and they tasted the same to me. This place is pretty average but honestly the portions are so good. I come here when I'm feeling a little cheap but still wanna eat some indian food. I love the giant portions of naan and they don't skimp on sauce, which I always want to dunk my naan and rice in. The curry is on the blander side, but I did notice when ordering online you can add spice level, so try that if you're not into a milder sauce. If you're looking for authenticity this is not it but if you are HUNGRY and feelin cheap you can get a decent fix here. I love that they serve complimentary chai tea as well, so you can be well fed with leftovers for under $15. read more

I really liked the mango lassi - this is one item that's always a hit or miss when I try a new restaurant, but these folks make a really good one! Samosas, gobhi chicken & mixed vegetables were pretty good too. I noticed another review talking bout spicy level -- this is obv completely subjective, so order based on what you know you can handle/like -- but to me it was all mild, ie spicy level zero (and it's not even that my tolerance is high, I don't eat spicy stuff often). But if it's a concern for you, it'd be best to call them to order, because you don't get to customize it on online orders (I got ubereats). Side note, "biriyani should be mild" is one of the funniest things I've seen on a South Asian restaurant's page lol :P I mean ofc there are many, many varieties of biryani, but in general it is more likely to be at least a little spicy than not. read more

Ambiance is nonexistent here. It's like a college cafeteria inside. Chairs and tables are in poor shape, depressive lighting and decor. Restaurant was completely empty and atmosphere sad so we decided to order our food to go. Ordered Chicken Tikka Masala, Naan and a cup of Chai. Was $20 which isn't bad these days. The sauce tasted like tomato soup - none of those fantastic Indian spices that I love. Normally I can't get enough, but this one I couldn't even finish because it was so off and too acidic. I don't think I've ever finished my food so fast. I'm vegetarian and got the paneer tikka masala and the garlic naan with plain basmati rice. It was the most creamiest paneer tikka masala I'd ever tried and it was to die for. The naan was ginormous and worth the money compared to other places that give such a small piece. Like I said, I ate my food so quickly. It was delicious. I didn't take a photo until I was halfway through eating it.
