I pass by this place all the time on the way to work and a friend finally convinced me to try it because I have been craving chili cheese fries and chili cheese dogs. There's no parking lot so street parking is your best friend, keep in mind Berkeley is notorious for giving out parking tickets so keep an eye out on the meters or 2 hour parking signs. They have a nice outdoor seating area with a big patch of grass as well as some seating inside. You order outside and pick up your food when the pager they give you, goes off. I highly recommend their milkshakes. I went mango and the guy was nice enough to tell me and get me extra mango, free of charge because otherwise it's just a mild mango. Thank you for that suggestion. Also quick tip, if you are lactose intolerant, get their non dairy option and it will taste the same as a regular milkshake. It's really good. No matter what you get, you can't really go wrong. You can just tell by the line they have out the door. The service was relatively quick and please please please clean up after yourselves when you're done. There's trashcans around to throw your garbage and put your tray on top. read more

The three stars are strictly for the location and the aesthetics. I love what they've done with the place and the shear subculture it brings on its own. Aside from that, I got burgers and fries. A double cheeseburger at that. I love double cheeseburgers, but this one was too much meat and ingredients and not enough solid bread. The bread was really thin and didn't really combine well with the ingredients because it started falling apart. It was my first time and I tried it because it's down the street from a property. I manage and thought I'd give it a shot. This may be a place where the appetizers and sides are more my speed. Will try again maybe with a single patty burger and maybe try a hotdog and some sides. Decent spot to grab anything from chili cheese fries to a hotdog, burger, chicken sandwich, shake, etc. parking can be very limited and tricky. Service is easy going- you walk up place your order, handed a buzzer, find a seat either indoor or outdoor. And once your buzzer goes off you walk up to the window and grab your order. I usually get the grilled chicken sando with fries and a drink. Ambiance is basically a grab and go or grab and sit burger spot. A must try if in the area- it's a classic for the area. read more

Stopped by for a quick lunch and was really glad I did! The last time i visited Smokehouse was decades ago. I am not in that neighborhood much any more. but yesterday I dropped someone off nearby and decided to give it another try. I had the double burger and a side of fries. Both were very good. The burgers were NOT smashed, and therefore were juicy and flavorful. (Unlike the silly, overdone burger chips you get at a smashburger joint.) And the serving size was generous. It easily held me until dinner. The fries were the perfect compliment. Very hot and salty, just the way i like them. Crispy on the outside and buttery on the inside. Drove past this cute little spots several times now and finally decided to give it a shot. We ordered a double cheeseburger, large fries, and the double dog. The food was really good, burger was perfectly cooked and delicious. The fries were also really good. I am not the biggest fan of thick cut fries but these were good -- crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The double dog was also good 2 standard hot dogs but it gets the job done. I was also pleasantly surprised by how large the hot dogs were. The food did take a bit longer than I was anticipating but it was fine as we were in no rush. When we did get the food everything was fresh and cooked to perfection so no complaints here. The ambiance was really nice (they have both indoor and outdoor seating) with some grass and string lights set up outside. The food was also fairly priced, will definitely be coming back! read more

Omg! How can you beat the prices and flavor from this place?! They offer hot dogs, burgers, and shakes. Nothing fancy and straight to the point. You can also mix and match shake flavors at no additional charge which is always a good choice. They have outdoor and indoor seating and a small grass area if you so incline to have your own picnic. The burgers were yummy, my only wish is for the bun to be a bit more toasted so it didn't become so soggy so fast. The shakes were nice and thick! The onion rings were perfectly crispy. They had all kinds of burgers, hotdogs and sides. I also loved to see the non meat options like impossible burgers. Also offered free of charge were add ons such as chili, extra cheese, peppers etc. which was a nice touch. The fries were really good. We got a large since we were sharing. The portion size was unexpectedly huge, easily enough for three people to share. As for my fiancés normal cheese burger, he loved it. I chose the impossible since I don't eat beef and it wasn't my favorite. This was not my first time trying an impossible burger, but something about the texture and quality of burger was off. It also didn't taste of flamed grill despite the large firey grill we noticed it being cooked on. The cheese was also a bit strange, it was not vegan cheese it melted some but didn't look or taste like normal American cheese either. When I moved back to Oakland years ago, I saw that their location had received a face lift and even expanded their menu offerings. When you think Smokehouse, think 1950's burger joint fare with a slight twist. This spot serves fresh burgers, milkshakes, heaps of French fries, and hotdogs amongst a few a other items. The twist is that they also have solid vegan and dairy free offerings including an impossible burger, vegan cheese, and vegan milkshakes. I stopped by a few weeks ago after a night out to cap the evening off with a late night burger. They never disappoint here and your order comes out relatively quickly. You're welcome to munch on it outside or at the benches in the back. My burger was smoky, packed with toppings, and juicy. While you can definitely get a more gourmet burger in the Bay, it's hard to beat the price point here. I'm a sucker for good value and they do not disappoint! It took a while to be ready, but on our drive back to sf, we finished it and wanted another one. (Side note: we went to get another banana shake somewhere else and was disappointed). My burger binge is finally done. My last stop was Smokehouse. They have hot dogs AND burgers. My kind of place. The burger is full of flame- grilled deliciousness. The patty is on the thinner side, but with all the toppings, it makes great bite. It was good, so I will overlook the fact that it was a smash burger. The fries are super crispy and stayed hot on my ride back to the office. They offer dairy free shares using oat milk. Not my first preference, but one that makes my doctor happy. They have dairy, too of course. They also have a plethora of flavors to choose from, including black raspberry and horchata. Wish mine had been thicker, but it was really God. I also appreciated the extra big straw they give out with the shakes. You can tell they have been around a while, because there is no dedicated parking. There is plenty of seating, both indoors and outdoors. The picnic table outside sit on a little lawn. Service takes a minute, not because they are slow, but because they are busy. Business was brisk. They give you a pager to let you know when your order is ready. The best part, everything is super affordable. I spent about 18 bucks. Considering that's almost what a burger costs at other places, it's definitely a bargain. Next time there's a chili dog in my future. Recommended. read more

My family loves us some smokehouse burgers! We don't get to go often but when we want a good burger this is our go to spot. We like the downtown Berkeley vibes in that area very welcoming. It's rare to find a burger under $10 in the Bay, but a DOUBLE CHEESEBURGER under $10? That alone warrants this classic Berkeley joint a standing ovation. The burger was excellent, and I would have been okay paying double the price for it -- patty made-to-order with fresh pickles, shredded lettuce, and crisp tomato. They go heavy on the mustard which I welcomed (but yellow sauce haters be wary). The giant soda machines in the back were a welcome respite from the Diet-Coke-only fast food restaurants everywhere (why does no one seem to stock Coke Zero?!) and the back opens up to ample indoor and outdoor seating. The only downsides were the fries -- they were just okay -- and the wait time was longer than I expected. Though, I suppose waiting awhile is the price we pay for a fresh, cheap burger, and I'd gladly pay the cost again. This place is undoubtedly a CLASSIC Berkeley spot and one of the few places a family could feed everyone without breaking the bank. Perhaps that's why it's been an East Bay staple for over 70 years -- I'd highly recommend taking the extra 15 minutes to opt for Smokehouse over a trip to Jack-in-the-Box or McDonalds. read more

All seating is outside picnic tables, some under eaves and some in a small lawn area. It's cool that they allow tons of free extras once you pay for the base burger. The burger itself isn't new or trendy, its just a straight up delicious flame broiled burger with a decent bun and toppings. The milkshake is your typical softserve with added flavor but they also do a couple of mixins (like a DQ Blizzard) which elevates it. The onion rings were a disappointment, they were overly coated, dry and came with prepackaged Heinz ranch dressing (which wasn't great). They were deep fried nicely though with good crispy brown edges where actual onion peeked out, so hopefully the fries are better. read more

I'm usually not someone who frequent a burger joint but the double cheese burger here definitely won me over! It was cooked to perfection with tender meat patties and gooey cheese. The onion rings are the best I've had. So crispy and not oily at all. My parents really enjoyed their food as well and raved about the onion rings. My only gripe is that the fries aren't as good as I have hoped. They're a bit too soft and soggy. Overall it's the perfect classic American meal. I was satisfied. We'll be back! BEST MILKSHAKES EVER! I've tried the Strawberry (with Oreo mixed in), Banana, and Horchata flavors, and all were phenomenal! The banana one tasted like a creamy Banana Laffy Taffy. Seriously, they have the best milkshakes I've ever had--I'll definitely be trying them all! My friend loves to get the oreo milkshake with extra Oreos because oreo mix ins are free!
