Finally decided to give this spot a try! It's hard not to like Smokehouse. I mean the add-ons are all free. You can get a decent burger for less than $10. I wouldn't say the burger is anything special but it does the job. I'd get the extra cheese and caramelized onions next time. Their milkshake was pretty good and creamy too. They serve the grilled all beef dog on a good sized bun (grilled too), with American cheese on bun, at first I thought they forgot the cheese, but discover it was on the bottom. They lay down the dog onto the grilled cheesy bun, then add a good amount of chili, but not so much you can't see the dog, then a squeeze of mustard, then topped with sliced onions, not chopped. The chili has beans, decent flavor, but not much better than your standard canned chili. They serve with plastic knife and fork, definitely not a handheld chili dog. Good stuff! I can't believe I've been living in East Bay for close to 20 years and this is the first time I've dined at Smokehouse. For the price, the burgers here are absolutely incredible, both in terms of value and taste. The patty isn't anything fancy -- it's not a fancy dry-aged A5 wagyu burger, but there's beauty in simplicity. The patty is seasoned nicely, has a forward char flavor from the grill, and has a good texture to it. I love that there are so many free add-ons you can customize your burger with, including caramelized onions. The caramelized onions here put the grilled onions at In-N-Out to shame: the ones here are 100x better in terms of sweetness and the texture. For only a few dollars more than an equivalent burger at In-N-Out -- and without the massive lines, I would choose Smokehouse every single time I'm craving a burger. The fries and onion rings here are fried to perfection, and also free ranch is included with the onion rings. Smokehouse was surprisingly okay. I'm a pescatarian so I didn't think there was much for me here, but I was in fact wrong. They had impossible burgers and fish burgers. I got the fish burger and it was good. I would give it a 7/10. Something that would have made this burger even better would be thousand island saw/dressing and if I added more pickles. The cheese fries were really good for someone who may enjoy nacho cheese opposed to melted square cheese like they do at In-N-Out. I added grilled onions on top and that made it taste better. When I return, I most likely will just get the fish and chips with pickles on the side. The customer service was great and that ambience was nice. I pass by this place all the time on the way to work and a friend finally convinced me to try it because I have been craving chili cheese fries and chili cheese dogs. There's no parking lot so street parking is your best friend, keep in mind Berkeley is notorious for giving out parking tickets so keep an eye out on the meters or 2 hour parking signs. They have a nice outdoor seating area with a big patch of grass as well as some seating inside. You order outside and pick up your food when the pager they give you, goes off. I highly recommend their milkshakes. I went mango and the guy was nice enough to tell me and get me extra mango, free of charge because otherwise it's just a mild mango. Thank you for that suggestion. Also quick tip, if you are lactose intolerant, get their non dairy option and it will taste the same as a regular milkshake. It's really good. No matter what you get, you can't really go wrong. You can just tell by the line they have out the door. Drove past this cute little spots several times now and finally decided to give it a shot. We ordered a double cheeseburger, large fries, and the double dog. The food was really good, burger was perfectly cooked and delicious. The fries were also really good. I am not the biggest fan of thick cut fries but these were good -- crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The double dog was also good 2 standard hot dogs but it gets the job done. I was also pleasantly surprised by how large the hot dogs were. The food did take a bit longer than I was anticipating but it was fine as we were in no rush. When we did get the food everything was fresh and cooked to perfection so no complaints here. I first noticed smokehouse when I drove by and saw that the building had caught on fire and it was closed a few years ago. It peaked my interest and when it reopened, I was sure to go by to try their selection. At the time I was living down the street on Ashby so it was very convenient I have had their impossible, burger, fries, cheese fries, hotdog, and milkshakes. Honestly, I love this place and see why it is packed around 6 PM on the weekends and pretty busy all throughout the day and evening on weekdays. They flame grill their burgers they are not too greasy, all the produce is fresh. Diner like style they get you in there and out pretty quick. Have a nice little outdoor seating area and an indoor seating area. I keep coming back to smokehouse even though I now live 15 minutes away. With all the burger spots around the East Bay that I could go to, 15 minutes is actually a drive and it's totally worth it. read more

When I moved back to Oakland years ago, I saw that their location had received a face lift and even expanded their menu offerings. When you think Smokehouse, think 1950's burger joint fare with a slight twist. This spot serves fresh burgers, milkshakes, heaps of French fries, and hotdogs amongst a few a other items. The twist is that they also have solid vegan and dairy free offerings including an impossible burger, vegan cheese, and vegan milkshakes. I stopped by a few weeks ago after a night out to cap the evening off with a late night burger. They never disappoint here and your order comes out relatively quickly. You're welcome to munch on it outside or at the benches in the back. My burger was smoky, packed with toppings, and juicy. While you can definitely get a more gourmet burger in the Bay, it's hard to beat the price point here. I'm a sucker for good value and they do not disappoint! I also have to say that their vegan shakes are great and quite affordable. I chose the impossible since I don't eat beef and it wasn't my favorite. This was not my first time trying an impossible burger, but something about the texture and quality of burger was off. It also didn't taste of flamed grill despite the large firey grill we noticed it being cooked on. The cheese was also a bit strange, it was not vegan cheese it melted some but didn't look or taste like normal American cheese either. They go heavy on the mustard which I welcomed (but yellow sauce haters be wary). The giant soda machines in the back were a welcome respite from the Diet-Coke-only fast food restaurants everywhere (why does no one seem to stock Coke Zero?!) and the back opens up to ample indoor and outdoor seating. The only downsides were the fries -- they were just okay -- and the wait time was longer than I expected. Though, I suppose waiting awhile is the price we pay for a fresh, cheap burger, and I'd gladly pay the cost again. This place is undoubtedly a CLASSIC Berkeley spot and one of the few places a family could feed everyone without breaking the bank.
