Great value restaurant in the neighborhood, but flavors were on the bland side. This is the first Indian restaurant in the area I was able to find butter chicken that included naan for only $16! Unfortunately, it was also the blandest curry I've ever tasted. Most of the flavor only came from the seasoning on the chicken underneath all the sauce. I wonder if it'd improve with more spice. I really enjoyed the naan though, and it was quite a generous portion! Overall I'd give the restaurant 3.5* mostly due to the affordable prices and portion sizes.

Cafe Raj nestled in Albany between El Cerrito and Berkeley is a restaurant of Indian auntie's throwing down in the kitchen for us all to enjoy. Food comes out fast fresh and hot. You can control the spice level of your dishes and there are delicious sides to accompany the meal. If you love Indian you will appreciate Cafe Raj's home cooking and decent portion sizes. The servers are so sweet even when they are busy. My favorite part of this visit was seeing all the lovely ladies who work in the back in the kitchen sit with one another for a quick meal break after the dinner rush. I love you feel like family and seeing all the kitchen staff eating the food they are serving is something special

This place is one of my favorites and I come here often. The service, price, and food portions cannot be beat. When I come to take out they have me a full cup of chai on the house while I wait. When I dine in, they have always given me Kheer for dessert for free. Their food portions are very generous and entrees always include rice or naan (15$ average for an entree). Their appetizers are also well portioned and their tamarind chutney was super fresh! I love their mango lassi as well. The place seems to be women run as I see only female cooks and servers. They have a cozy indoor seating area and I haven't never had to wait for a seat. They have multiple spice levels for their food and sometimes I need to add extra salt but everything is very fresh and delicious!

I like the idea of dining out having good friendly service and not being gouged. I believe this is my first time at this restaurant. With some assistance from the server we ordered pakora and papadam for appetizers. We shared all our dishes. We ordered butter chicken, tandoori chicken and guessing we had mushroom saag. We had two types of bread orders: naan and chappati. We had complimentary chai tea and rice pudding. The bread came with the meal. You certainly get good value at this restaurant. It won't cost you an arm and a leg to eat here. And I came away full. I don't think you can go wrong with any of these dishes. I'm always leery of tandoori chicken because I find out it's often dry at restaurants, but not here! I'm going to come back and try some other dishes.

Lately I have been craving anything curry and curious about curry from different ethnic cuisine. So my dining companion took me to her favorite Indian restaurant. It's a women run business. Browsing their menu, my natural curiosity brought me to wonder the difference between the many dishes that have curry like flavoring ie Korean, tikka Marsala, butter chicken, etc. then reading the menu description I narrow my choice to butter chicken at medium spiciness. Personally I thought I took the easy way as my companion ordered the same but at mild spiciness with rice and garlic naan. Ordinarily as a variety I would order a different dish not that we share but simply have something different. The service was friendly and attentive. I did ask the question about the difference but obviously ordered something safe. This was my first time here and it is a small family run business with the hospitality that goes with it. The garlic naan was on the light, not heavy like other places I have had before with a hint of garlic. My medium spicy butter chicken was very pleasant on the first bite. I would say the medium spiciness barely registered but it is slightly different than the mild version that seems to be sweeter. The portion and pricing were reasonable. I would be back because of the hospitality and to try other dishes.

Portions and prices are great. The tikka masala and saag paneer were great. Beef naan also. I will return.

Something I always like to start off with on their menu is their hot chai tea. It's hot and creamy with just the right amount of warm spices on a cold day in the winter. It also wakes me right up. Everything that we've ordered has been delicious, esp. the nimki chaat, dal, and spicy tofu. Their papad is also tasty and great for snacking if you're not too hungry. The service is always great, whether they are busy or not. Food always comes out promptly and they always check upon us to make sure everything is alright. I've spent hours at this place catching up with my friend, even after we're done eating, and they've never hinted at us to leave :) Highly recommend if you're looking for a cozy spot with amazing food and great staff.

I ordered the Nimki Chaat because I'd seen it mentioned several times in reviews. It was a fun, tasty starter--too much for one person, but I'd definitely order it again with a group. For my entrée, I ordered the chicken tandoori tiki kebab. The chicken was high quality, flavorful, and didn't have that red dye you see in so much tandoori chicken. I ordered it medium spicy, but it wasn't really spicy at all. Still, it was very good. I'm more of a curry person, though, because I love having sauce to dip my naan in and enjoy with rice. The dish came with a small green salad, raita, and rice. I also ordered the garlic naan, which was really, really good--thin, crispy, and pillowy all at once. I couldn't taste a lot of garlic, but I never really can at any Indian restaurant. Before my meal arrived, I was served a cup of dal soup, which was quite nice. I usually find lentil soup watery and boring, but this one was flavorful and satisfying. I look forward to going back and trying a curry dish and the momo.

We were seated immediately and didn't need to look at the menu too long before we ordered. We decided on pani puri and veggie samosas for apps and tikka masala and butter chicken, rice and garlic naan. I ordered a vegan mango lassi and him a regular mango lassi. The pani puri was ok. I like the crispy, but I wasn't too fond of the filling to be chilled. It also had a slight sweetness to it and it wasn't my favorite. I've had it before, but I don't remember it being chilled on the inside, but what I do like about it what is that? It has a crispy shell when you bite into it. The veggie samosas were my favorites. The butter chicken was kind of bland as well as the tikka masala. It did not stop me from finishing my garlic naan with our dishes but I found myself wishing it was more flavorful. My vegan mango lassi had a taste that I wasn't too fond of and didn't finish it. At the end of the meal, it was more than $100 and that was sticker shock for me. I don't think I'm returning, but the service is friendly.

The chicken tikka masala is a classic and definitely worth getting; it's flavorful and reliably good every time. But what really surprised me was the shrimp curry. I went in expecting the shrimp to be a bit overcooked or limited in quantity, but that wasn't the case at all. The shrimp were actually cooked really well and there was a generous amount in the dish, making it feel like a great value. One thing to keep in mind, rice doesn't automatically come with the curries, so you'll have to order it separately if you want it. That said, we usually skip the rice and go for naan instead, specifically the potato naan and garlic naan. Between the two, you get a really nice contrast in texture. The potato naan is thicker, soft, and fluffy on the inside, almost like a comforting, filled bread, while the garlic naan is thinner with a slightly crispy edge. Make sure not to sleep on the free chai tea, it's easy to miss if you're not looking for it. Off to the right of the cashier desk, there's a little self-serve station with cups, sugar packets, stir sticks, and a large container filled with hot chai. You can pour as much as you want, whenever you want, which is a nice touch and a great way to round out the meal. One thing to note about the atmosphere: there are occasional slow periods where the place can get really quiet, and you might even find yourself as the only table there. It can feel a little awkward in those moments, but it just depends on the time of day. When it's busy, though, it has a much more lively, energetic feel. Overall, it's a solid, low-key spot with good food, a family-friendly environment, and a few nice little perks that make it stand out.

We had prawn biryani, shaptak pork, shahi paneer, chicken vindaloo, lamb tikka masala, aloo gobi, prawn coconut, chicken tandoori, yellow curry dal, garlic and onion naan bread. We ate well and all the sauces, curries and favors were amazing with everything being just what we had hoped. And I like spice! But it was labeled 2/5 chilis and that was a vast understatement. I guzzled 5 glasses of water. I started to hear colors. The flavor was nice from what I could taste, but it was so spicy my sister couldn't finish her wrap and I suffered through mine. Even the owner said she would classify it a 4/5 chili dish, but it was her husband who decided it would be 2/5. It will burn a hole in your insides and humble you. - the vanilla cardamom panna cotta didn't have enough vanilla or cardamom flavor. The Tenali Kura (paneer) claimed to be a 2/5 spice level, and I assure you it was NOT. I have been trying to follow an acid reflux diet, which is supposed to be minimal/no spices. I figured 2/5 would be okay- maybe some warmth, but surely on the mild side. I was wrong. After 2 bites, I felt like my lips were starting to puff up and my mouth was salivating more to deal with the spice. I felt so confused, I had to ask the owner "Is this a 2/5 Indian spicy? Or regular?" and she laughed. She said "If it were up to me, I would say it's 4/5 spicy. My husband said it was a 2/5 so that's what he put on the menu." Honestly my mouth was so numb, I can't even comment on the flavor of the food. I would love a new menu based on the wife's judgement of spice level. On a different day, I had the butter chicken and rice, and it was excellent. I would consider going back but not for the tenali kura. The staff were all friendly and great, and there's a cute mural on the wall. The outdoor area seems like it'd be a great on a hot sunny day too.
