There are very few restaurants where I find myself venture back to the very next day after trying it for the first time, but Vegan N' Chicken had me hooked after my first bite. I was looking for a simple comfort meal after a long day and decided to try a place. It was around 8:30 and most places in the area were closing at 9 but Vegan N' Chicken happened to be open until 10pm! When I walked in, I immediately was welcomed with 'mom and pop' restaurant vibes. It is a very casual and fairly small restaurant, but it makes for a very comforting experience. You get to seat yourself then they'll bring you a menu. The menu is simple, but also has everything you'd need. They even have a few seafood dishes! While you wait for your food, you can help yourself to their complimentary soup & hot chai. I'll admit I have no clue what the soup is, but it is such a great way to start the meal. Especially with some hot chai too! On day 1 we ordered Lamb Tikka Masala ($14.99), Chana Masala ($9.99), Cheese Naan ($3.99), Rice ($2.99), and Vegetable Samosas ($4.99). The servings were very generous for the price compared to other similar restaurants in Berkeley. We did ask for medium spice level, but it wasn't spicy enough for us so they brought us a plate of onions, peppers, and cucumbers! The Chana Masala was my favorite bite of the night. It was packed with fragrant spices & the garbanzo beans were so tender. The Lamb Tikka Masala was a little bit sweeter than I am used to, but after mixing in some rice or eating it with the cheese naan it was perfect. On day 2, we ordered the Papadum ($2.99), Rice ($2.99), Prawn Vindaloo ($17.99), and Chana Masala ($9.99 - we added paneer to it and didn't confirm how much it was with the paneer). This time we ordered our dishes spicy to see if it was any different. It really was still not spicy at all, but honestly it didn't bother us. It was a great way to be able to enjoy the dishes in their entirety. The prawns in the vindaloo were fairly large and the portion was perfect for two people! They were also not overcooked & still had a nice bounce when biting into it. The Chana masala with the added paneer was a great combination as well. Vegan N' Chicken is honestly a great spot for the college students nearby as well. It's affordable & could easily be split into two meals even if you just order one dish! Next time we stop by, we're going for the biryani!

I give this rating now because I love walking into a place and receive great customer service, a friendly smile and hello goes a long way me. They just opened the doors for lunch, we ate a late breakfast so this is going to be lunch for my son when he is ready to eat. I will taste it to see if I like it and will come back later today and order some for me. The restaurant is clean. The music adds a special touch being in their language, oh not music, I just asked the young girl. It is a chant. The guy offers me complimentary chi as I start to exit. Can't wait to taste this Chicken Biryani.

Just stumbled upon this place. The owner is beyond friendly & chatty, so nice. We tried two vegan dishes - daal & banghan bartha and they were delicious & flavorful. Prices are very reasonable and the dishes hardy & good portion. Will most definitely be back to try other vegan dishes. They also have vegan roti bread. CC accepted.

Amazing, absolutely come here. Had this on the way back from vacation and my travel companion said it was the best meal they had the entire trip. I hadn't had experience with eating the food I chose but it tasted great and my friend who did said so too :) it's super affordable, I love that they have clearly defined vegan dishes. It's really authentic and the people are very kind

The food and the service were excellent. Very affordable and delicious, fresh food. Service was also friendly and competent. Parking was easy on side street. This was my birthday lunch and it couldn't have been better! We are vegan but I would love to come back to try their other options. They also do spice level to order.

I took my mom to a Mediterranean market. Next door had a new restaurant that just opened. We decided to eat here because the smell of their aroma food made me hungry. We ordered the usual chicken tiki masala that my mom likes and I had the special okra masala. The food was delicious. The non-bread was amazing fresh baked all in all will definitely come back again and again. friendly service the chef even came out to talk to us very nice.

    Okra Masala

Four of us went for an early dinner tonight and ordered: Okra masala, Palak gost (lamb with spinach), Chicken tikka masala, Basmati rice, naan, roti, raita, and mango chutney. The meat was very tender and the flavor was excellent. We asked for mild spicy since I am not a lover of spicy foods. They offer complimentary soup (delicious) and hot tea. Abbasi, the owner, is very friendly and helpful. We are not experts in Indian/Pakistani food and it was fun to share a variety of dishes. Their prices are very reasonable and their portions are ample. We will definitely return. Street parking is not hard.

So since we're in the city of culture I wanted to fully delve myself and my new family into this beautiful establishment. (Long story short my son's girlfriend is half Afghanistani and half Cubana) (She's spicy and we love her ) (Amazing addition to the family) We came here in honor of her beautiful mixed culture, might I say... I LOVED IT!!! So first of all, I ordered a burrito (since it's my review the kids' orderes' don't matter) this burrito was the best thing I've ever put in my mouth and I've put a lot in there. The meat was so tender and tasteful and tubular and tummy exciting I have to know the recipe for my future grandkids . Second of all the service was divine and the server was cute and polite might I add. Third of all, I just loved the overall expierence and I definitely will be coming back. Thank you Afghani Burrito.

I ordered in person for a to go order and there was no line, but ended up having to wait almost 40 minutes to get my burrito. I had to check at the window after 35 mins and they completely forgot to make it. Finally got my chicken and steak burrito and took it home only to find out there was no steak in the burrito.. So I paid extra for something I didn't get and had my time wasted. On top of that I left a tip after ordering even though I did a to go order. Hate to leave a negative review because the food actually tasted quite good but this was a terrible experience.

The restaurant is fairly small with probably about a half a dozen tables, etc. The owner was very polite, and thankfully very patient with us for a friends lunch. We originally had plans for another restaurant, but this location, etc. worked out. Everyone spent quite a bit of time catching up, and we were made to feel at home. I ordered a side of fries for a shareable at the table. I found the fries to be very underwhelming and needed more seasoning and considering that it's seven dollars for a side of fries the serving was pretty mediocre. I ordered the lamb/beef gyro plate. The side salad was very fresh and had a light vinaigrette dressing. I would have liked for the dressing to be more of an actual vinaigrette flavor. The rice was light and fluffy, but again, lacked seasoning/flavor. The side of yogurt sauce, was tasty, but did not hit the spot. Why? Because it really lacked the flavors. Notice a theme? I will say, the meat was tender, and it had a really nice flavor to it. It was delicious enough that it was very difficult to differentiate between a lamb flavor versus a beef flavor. It all tasted good together. The soft drinks are rather pricey. It was around $3.50 for a bottled Coke. Yikes! When we were done with our meal, we were served complementary hot tea. It was a nice touch.

I got an assortment of Turkish delight and some pistachio baklava ($2.99). The Turkish delight is sold by weight across all the varieties and goes for $16.99/lb. The guy behind the counter was super friendly and offered us a sample of one of the flavors to try which I thought was a nice gesture. Everything looked so good, so we picked a couple different pieces of Turkish delight to try. To my surprise, my favorite ended up being the saffron, though rose petal with pomegranate and sour cherry with pastachio were close seconds. I didn't like the coconut or the chocolate one that much, so reminder to myself to skip those next time. After picking up the dessert, I did a quick circle around the store to see what they had. It's not a big store but they manage to cram a lot of stuff into the limited space!

I've ordered a beer while waiting for my clothes to dry and was welcomed to sit with my dog on the back patio. The atmosphere is warm and accommodating. The market itself is a treasure trove: shelves filled with Middle Eastern dry goods, nuts, dried fruits, spices, blends, and condiments you can't find anywhere else. Kofta, shish kebab, falafel, sumac, garam masala -- it's all here. They also carry pita, lavash, labna, and other breads and yogurts that make cooking from scratch feel like heaven. Bonus points for the large assortments of delicious house made baklavas! Even without a full kitchen, the prepared foods are excellent. I ordered falafel, eggplant dip, hummus, and cucumber salad from the to‑go counter -- a mini feast for $26 that didn't disappoint. **Verdict:** Courteous service, respectful staff, and a fantastic selection. Whether you're cooking at home or grabbing a bite, this place is a gem. Highly recommended.

Dinner with a side of rude attitude. No thanks!…read more If it were not for the food, and I could give 0 stars, I would. Not sure if they were having a bad day, and we came on the wrong night, but that should not be any excuse. I use to frequent their old location, and have yet to go back since they moved. First attempt at the new location, I tried to come with 2 girl friends for an early lunch on a Monday at 11am. Their hours say they open at 10:30am, but it was 11:20am, and their doors were locked and the people inside said they were closed. Second attempt was on a Sunday evening at 6pm. We were 2 families totaling 8 people. We told the hostess/server our party size, and almost immediately, she did not seem too happy about it. That is when the attitude began. We looked around, and noticed that there were about 2 or 3 other tables of 2-3 people dining, so it was not like they were busy. We were really taken back by her reaction and tone, which made us worry about the service the rest of the night. We got seated, looked at the menu, and let her know we were ready to order. We were curious and had a few quick questions, such as which is popular and which type of meat comes in the plate (because it did not specify), but her responses were very rude. She even tried to give an attitude saying we could not change what comes on the plate, when in fact we were just adding to the order. She was just so quick to try to find a problem to speak on that she did not realize it was an addition. I started to get upset. I truly tried to keep my calm, but it was really hard with the way she was speaking. Food took pretty long to come out even though they were not busy. Good thing we were not in a rush. We noticed that the people next to us ordered before us, but our food came out first, so we felt bad. Then when their food did come out, I believe something was wrong, so they had to wait a little more. Although the food was decent, the service ruined the entire experience. For that reason, I would not go back.
