We went tonight as a party of 4, and ordered several dishes that we shared family style. We ordered 2 naan, the garlic and a potato kind, which were delicious and we had 1/2 of one left over. We also shared the Chicken Tikka Masala, Tandoori Prawns, Punjabi Mutton Curry, Lamb Vindaloo, and Chicken Pukhta Muragh Biryani. All of the meat was very tender, the sauces flavorful but not overly spicy. The menu is a little limited, especially for vegetarian options, and the portions are a little on the smaller size; but we did all leave feeling very well fed, enjoyed all the dishes and did have a little bit left over to take home. I did think the plates could have had a little more rice on them considering how much sauce all of the curries and stews are served with, especially since the menu doesn't offer up ordering a side of rice. Overall though, I would go here again, and suggest it to friends. With a few adjustments I'd give another star - that being slightly larger portions, an easier to read menu, some more vegetable options, an option to order extra rice, a few more pieces of meat in each of the stews. read more

Completely disappointed. They switched from hard plastic containers to cheap tin ones, and amazingly they give even less food then before. Do not patron here if you want to be full after you eat. It was near closing, so perhaps that's why the service seemed a bit rushed. And maybe there were some cultural and mannerisms misunderstandings. I didn't think that the food was all that wonderful.. wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything to brag about. The treatment I received at the restaurant by the person was polite, but a business politeness that wreaked on the feeling that "hurry up and let's get this over with because I have something else to do." I felt that the person at the counter expected me to tip them, which I did only because they asked. It was quite uncomfortable being hinted that a tip was expected, even though it was a takeout. They failed to provide napkins or plastic cutlery. Perhaps Berkeley forbids it. I did not request it either. Overall, I would rate it a c-minus experience. I won't go back. Tried this place the other day from a recommendation of a friend. I was a bit skeptical since reviews are a bit light and low on Yelp but looked around and they have pretty good reviews on Google. Anyway I had to write one here to give this place some justice. I love Indian food and have eaten it more times than I can count amongst countless restaurants. My goto place is usually Viks but I wanted a change of style and some nan bread and of course with a name like Breads of India now can you go wrong? The nan here is simply amazing. Only tried the garlic and plain but it was beyond comparison of my previous nan experiences. Fresh out of the oven and moist and just melted in your mouth. Had similar vibes of what roti would be/taste like. The rest of the food here was just as good. Classic chicken masala and tandoori. Can't wait to come back for more. Oh and the lentil soup was on point as well. We did dine in, I think that's the only way for the best fresh Indian experience. read more

Worst Indian food ever. The lassi was sour and the butter chicken was literally 4 small pieces of chicken in a flavorless sauce. Yuck.

It seems their menu changes relatively frequently and I also appreciate the very descriptive explanations they have on every item. Ordered the bikaneri mattar pakori, vindaloo lamb kofta, mattar masala kulcha, and garlic naan. The breads were very tasty - both the garlic naan and the pea bread. I am a big fan of peas so I thought it was great but obviously if you are not a fan of peas I enjoyed the bikaneri mattar pakori, which curry with peas and also fried dumplings inside. My main complaint is that the vindaloo lamb kofta literally only came with 2 meatballs and not much sauce. The meatballs were tasty and slightly bigger than a normal meatball but there was definitely not enough curry to go with the naan and rice that it came with. For a $14 entree, I feel like maybe there should be more than 2 meatballs or at least enough sauce to eat all the carbs with. Overall, I think the food was good and I would probably return - although maybe just stick with vegetarian options in the future. read more

This place is an underappreciated wonder. Very impressive menu for such a small intimate space: Seventeen fixed entrees (three vegetarian, eight specials entrees (three vegetarian) which change every month, twelve breads (six of which change every month), plus daal, pakoras, samosas and raita provide a delightful and changing set of options for vegetarians and meat eaters alike plus lassis: mango (yum!), sweet and salt, tea, and a selection of beer, wine, sodas and juices. Last night I had the pakoras which were crispy, not oily, and the mint and tamarind sauces flavorful. The Mizhoku Puratti was cooked perfectly so the many individual vegetables all stood out. This has always been the experience for me with Bread's vegetarian dishes. They clearly give great care not to overcook the veggies into the mush that happens at some Indian restaurants. The raita and daal were good complements to the meal. Being a mostly vegetarian I can't speak for any of the meat dishes myself, except for the excellent tandoori salmon for which I've made an exception to my diet. I love the ever changing variety of the Breads for which the restaurant is named. Last night the nigella seeds in the Peshawari Naan gave a nice tang to this multilayered tandoor baked bread. As an enhancement, Breads' menus provide an interesting detailed background to the regional origins, ingredients and cooking style and process for each dish. This restaurant deserves more attention in Berkeley's crowded Indian restaurant lineup. read more

Why haven't I been here in such a long time?! I wasn't even sure it was still opened. We just had the best Indian food tonight. We've been frequenting the higher rated Indian restaurants in the Bay Area yet none compare. The nan was moist, chewy and crispy and charred. The curry was complex, flavorful and interesting. Not the typical sweet,one note sauces. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was good. The prices are even more reasonable than I remember. This place had delicious Indian food. The breads are amazing. The curries are great. We had chicken curry and a vegetable dumpling in a curry sauce and naan topped with mint and cilantro. The dinners come with dahl and rice and tomato chutney and a small salad with green chutney. We had the rice pudding for dessert. It was made with ground rice and beautifully spiced. The service was good. the decor is simple but nice. We will definitely be back!! read more

I finally have to get this off my chest. I sincerely hope that there is new ownership or that they at least have changed their policy. I went here for a quick lunch. I wanted to eat small. I sat at a table and ordered dal and naan. The waiter brought it to me in a take-out bag. I said that I did not order take-out and wanted to eat it here. He said that they don't allow people to sit at a table if they only order dal and naan. There were only three other people in the restaurant so it was not because of a shortage of space and I was nicely dressed. What condescending fools. I have not been back since. read more

At Breads of India, Gods have spoken in a language only understood by the palate. To create such subtle tastes of earth, vocative ginger, colliding with smooth texture of spinach channa masala is nothing short of amazing culinary genius. The food preparation is clean, healthy, and wonderfully concocted by their chef. Breads of India's vegetarian dishes like dal curry, basmati rice, and the mixed vegetable curry are the most authentic north Indian food I have tasted in the Bay Area. The difference between Breads of India's channa ginger and curry vegetables are discerning as compared to any other Indian food as the garbanzo beans were thoroughly cooked but not mushy, and the channa masala spices absorbed in the beans yet intact. The food is low in sodium when compared to other restaurants. Of course, I am watching my blood pressure, so it does matter. I was amazed at the freshness of garam masala. The taste of each earthy spice, for example, dried fenugreek, coriander, subtle chili pepper, cumin, and cardamom laces the vegetables while the elixir of senses triggers images of travel over the silk road. Congratulations to the Breads of India for creating an authentic northern Indian cuisine experience for those of us who wish to visit India one day in the not so near future! read more

Yay! Back open after a long closure due to a fire. The place is brighter and cleaner than ever before: they went all out. I considered five stars for the review, but my first experience was really not really up to that level. The weirdest thing is the service counter. There are seven tables, and on my visit three wait staff stood at the counter overlooking the small room. No problem hailing a waiter, but the effect was kind of creepy. The new walls and especially the tables are hard sounding and cold feeling. For all the excess staff, they were not able to help interpret the menu or find an appropriate dairy-free spice-limited meal for one of our party. On the good side, they now accept credit cards. And the breads are still great. read more

I have eaten at Breads of India in Berkeley probably 50+ times. I have never been disappointed in either the food or the staff. The food is always hot (temperature), flavorful, and in big portions. The breads are fantastic! The food arrives very quickly, which is nice if you're going to a concert after like I usually am. The wait staff is cordial and attentive (not overly). The 1 & 2 Star reviews must have been at another Breads of India I don't know about. read more

AAAh what happened to this place? before the fire this was one of my staple places to eat. i liked it so much i would eat there about once a month ... what happened to the quality of the food ( or the cook) is a mystery ... it also was organic meats then ... no more. have tried twice now and both time the food was disappointing . the second time ... i am sad to say that this was possibly the worst spinach with potato - Sag Aloo - ... i have had this dish hundred times in my life in most places in Berkeley and elsewhere .. i know a good, or just ok sag aloo. it was basically liquid thin baby food with no taste what so ever the 3 pieces of potatoes must have been attempted to be cooked while i waited .. they were half done crunchy not edible ... the rice was ok. over $10 .. sad. read more

I'm really excited to have finally tried this restaurant! We are still trying to get our "American version of Indian curry", but this place is as close as it's come! We started with Vegetable Pakoras - hearty, crispy, not oily, and the mint chutney was super tasty (and spicy!). My husband had the Gosht Nariyal, and I had the Sabzi Hyderabadi. Both were wonderful! Thick curry sauce, very tasty, lots of veggies, and it comes on a plate with rice, salad, and pickled mango (I think). We also got the dill and garlic naan - amazing! Some of the best naan we ever had. Small, cozy spot, friendly service, timely meal. Will definitely come back! I would love LOVE to give 5 stars, but my only hesitation is the limited menu. There are only 3 vegetarian dishes, and it was hard to tell if they were vegan or not. For me (following vegan diet) this is challenging . . . but for my meat eating companion, not a problem =) read more

It's nice to see Breads back in business after the fire; we used to come here regularly and it always has an interesting menu selection. The mutton curry (my choice) was excellent, with a lot of meat in an excellent sauce. My wife's Masala was good, if a little too sweet, but again very tasty. Portion sizes aren't as large as I remembered, but aren't too small either. Pudding was a little disappointing however, the Phirni was a little coarse and came in an oh-so-classy plastic tub. As the name suggests Breads has a good selection on naans to go with the meals and they all sound excellent. This time we tried the gluten-free naan and it did the job very nicely, although I found myself wishing I'd ordered one of the big, fluffy flour naans to mop up my mutton curry. Service was fast and efficient, the new layout makes this a good spot for groups, with three new booths built in, and the decor looks better than before the fire. We'll be back. read more

I see there are some mixed reviews but I have to say I thought it was pretty darn good food - and I eat a lot of indian food. We had the goan chicken which was tender and flavorful, and a generous portion. It was accompanied by basamati rice and a nice sized portion of dal. We ordered one of the specialty Naans - coconut mint and it was easily one of the best examples of Naan that I have had. One order was more than the two of us could finish. The interior was bright, nicely decorated and spotless. The hostess/waitress was very helpful when quizzed about the menu, and friendly. I will be back for more soon. read more

In all the years that I've been eating Saag Paneer, I never tried a dish of it I didn't like.. Until now. It was hard to put a pin point on exactly what went wrong. Could it be the spinach was bad, could it be it needed more spices, could it be the cook didn't care? I think maybe a little of both? My boyfriend and I decided that the spinach defiantly had the taste of being on the way out. For the 4 measly cheese cubes included for the price of $10.99 it was defiantly not worth it. I was visibly sadden to not take my leftovers home because it was so bad. Besides my food the dill naan was delish, the samosas were tastey, and my boyfriends curry was good. Service was alright. My friend told me he will take me to this place because of how good the naan and curries were. He eats a lot of indian foods, I studied abroad in South India, and I have already eaten home cooked Indian meals made from Aunties and Uncles. My expectations were extremely high. Perhaps I should not have done that, but even so, I didn't think it would be such a disappointment. I'm giving it 2 stars versus 1 star because of the service. I don't usually judge restaurants based on service because I really don't care unless they were extremely rude, but the food was just not that great. The service was good, so I wanted to give 1 star because of that. First off, the menu was extremely confusing. There were only about 9 items being served that night. Each page depicted a different menu item, explaining the history, region of India it came from, and the other proteins you can order the item with. It took me about 5 minutes to figure out what was going on. I pretty much had everything before, but the way it was described I was just made even more confused. I would read the menu, think hey, isn't this basically Tandoori Chicken? Then the menu would go on and on. We pretty much ordered Tandoori Chicken and Chicken Vindaloo. The chicken was not marinated as it was described on the menu. It was not tender, more dry and not as flavorful as you would expect. It was fun that it came in a sizzling platter, but it just took up more space than necessary because it was 2 skewers of chicken on a hot plate filled with onion and red cabbage. I was like, ok, maybe the naan will be better. We ordered garlic naan, tandoori naan, and a normal naan. The breads were dry, hard, and not appealing. I am very disappointed with the food. It looks like it could do well though. if they took away all the unnecessary things like the hot plates and set it up like family style, it could work. read more

However, the menu overall is very limited. I was expecting an extensive and diverse menu that one finds at "Flavors of India" restaurants. The menu here offers a fraction of what they offer. I'd eat there more often if the food was better and cheaper. I was so sorry to find out that the place burnt in fire, and I was so happy to see them back in business. Unfortunately, the food is not nearly as good as it used to be, yet it's more expensive. Their Naan breads used to be fantastic; now they are mediocre at best. I wanted to get a Tandoori chicken and I specifically asked them if they had that dish. The Tandoori chicken is prepared in a special oven and marinated in a way that it is moist and tasty. The Lady assured me that they had it and I ordered it. When I went home, I found out that it was not Tandoori chicken at all, and there we only 2 small pieces of it. She should have told me they didn't have that dish and I would have ordered something else, and probably be satisfied with it. Instead, she was dishonest and tried to make a quick sell, consequently, they permanently lost a customer. Disappointing! I would not order food there again. read more

I've heard so many people rave about Breads of India so our expectations were high. But even if we'd had no expectations at all we would've been seriously disappointed. The chicken tikka masala was quite possibly the most bland I've ever had. It had absolutely no flavor. Well, possibly a hint of tomato. I tasted no spices in it whatsoever. We've eaten chicken tikka masala at many different places and realize that it's primarily made to appeal to "gringos" and often isn't very spicy at all (as in heat). But this had no spice or heat or flavor. The naan was good but pretty pricey. We ordered takeout and it was nice that they served us even though it was only 5:00pm and they apparently don't officially open until 5:30pm. Kind of strange that the meal came with a side salad and they packed it in a separate take out. We could've done without the lettuce. We're unlikely to try any other dishes here. read more

These people are a bunch of crooks. They charged me $8.50 for 2 little balls in some sauce- "their daily special". Pathetic- if you see the size. The portions were: almost 2 cups of rice, a handful of spring mix, and then the smallest part: the main entree- the one I thought I ordered and would be getting a sizable portion of. Not to mention the taste, freshness, and nutrition of the main dish was dismal. I am sorry to have said that I threw my money away on this food and threw my stomach away being subjected to heavily spiced and heavily UNTASTEY food. The front help lady is rude and judgemental. The last time I was here, I ordered takeout, and they made a mistake, messing up one of our orders. When I told this to the woman at the front desk, she actually ARGUED with me saying it was all in my head and that they couldn't possibly have made a mistake. I would NOT recommend going here. For me the naan is a five-star heavenly experience, and I'm only talking about the plain stuff. Hot and fluffy from the fiery cookpot. My son and I were invited to watch the magic happen on a slow night and we will not soon forget it. Another visit, my family shared several delicious dishes and shared salmon, curries, and tikka. All great! The littlest one asked for a second mango lassi. Since the fire, the friendly kitchen staff is back and the entire restaurant is rebuilt and in very good condition. read more

Came in by myself right before they closed for the afternoon. The food was still very fast and fresh tasting, and the fennel naan was an excellent pairing with the tender tamarind curry chicken. The naan was chewy but well cooked, with a few nice crisp spots. Their hot chai was lightly sweetened and the spices were well balanced. I am not sure why they have a low rating. Okay, first time here, trying a carry-out. I went with the biryani with veggies and paneer. I have to say this is the best biryani I have had. Underneath this aromatic rice were these gems waiting for me - a fat chunk of carrot, a generous hunk of red pepper, cauliflower, lotus root (!), a chunk of red potato, of course a healthy portion of paneer cubes, and one or two other items I don't know the names of. Seriously, I felt like I was opening a gift each time my fork found the next perfectly cooked morsel underneath the rice. There was not one vegetable that had a double, instead they went with variety! I have never had a restaurant experience like this, carry-out or eat-in.
