As a south Indian myself I love frequenting this place as it is the closet thing I can get to authentic south indian food in Berkeley. The service is always quick and the food is consistent. My go to order is always the paper masala dosa as is is enormous, crispy, flavorful and thin enough that it gives me the crunch I crave in a well cooked dosa. The side chutney's are also staples in south indian culture and are delicious, usually being served with sides of potato curry, sambar, raita and coconut chili chutney. The food here was amazing!! I tried the paper masala dosa and the chili onion uthappam, both of which I would highly highly recommend. The sambar tasted fresh and had authentic spices, and I really liked the tomato chutney. The coconut chutney was good too but I appreciated it more as something to cool down after the spices rather than as a strong flavor. The owners were also so sweet and gave me extra sambar for my leftover takeout (the paper dosa is HUGE). I definitely think the dosa/uthappam dishes should be eaten fresh, preferably at the restaurant if possible because they lose the crispness very quickly. I'll definitely be back again! Udupi Palace is one of my favorites in the Bay Area for its South Indian vegetarian food. The Thali was a round metal platter that came with a dozen different items, which were balanced in flavor and made for a great way to sample a bunch of different dishes! There were the thali staples of rice, chapati (whole wheat flatbread), papad, raita, and a sour and salty lemon pickle. The soups included sambar (made of vegetables and lentils) and a spicy, tangy rasam (made of tomatoes, tamarind, and chilies). The other dishes included bisibelabath (a creamy mixture of rice, lentils, and vegetables); a green bean poriyal (with coconuts and lentils); korma (yogurt-based curry); chana masala (chickpeas in a thin tomato gravy); and a vegetable curry with beans, carrots, and cauliflower. The last time I had eaten here was years ago and it was good. Well, things change. I came with 4 friends on a Wednesday night. The food was, at best, mediocre. Nothing was special. Even the rice was bland. I ordered Saag Paneer, and it had a strange flavor, odd spices or maybe a strange variety of spinach. One friend, who rarely gets a chance to even go out for dinner, found the food inedible. The ambiance, after so many years in the same place is sad. The ambiance is no ambiance. Two of our party arrived half an hour early and the other four a half hour later! The space is spacious and clean, making us feel very safe in the face of Omicron. I am not a fan of the paper masala dosa --- it's too dry and crispy --- and the potato was a tad too bland. In general I prefer the partial softness of the usual masala dosa (I gotta try that here the next time). The medu vada was nice but it was dripping in oil like it was either refried, or the oil wasn't hot enough. It didn't have the lightness of batter that was deep-fried in well heated oil. I tried a bit of K's "Tomato omelette" Utthappam and it was pretty decent. However, I loved the coconut chutney, while the spicy chutney was decent, and the sambhar better than average. Strangely enough, the highlight of the meal was not the dinner but what came after --- the two items I ordered to go and had for breakfast the next day --- the "Special Upma" (semolina cooked with vegetables), and the "Pongal" (rice cooked with moong lentils and lightly seasoned). The Upma was really good (with ghee in it) and the Pongal was creamy and amazing!!! They both microwave very well so I was really happy about that. Based on dinner, I would have given a three stars but, ultimately, the Pongal and Upma brought up the rear. Besides, the problem with my "Paper Dosa" was me, not the dosa. Fast forward more than a couple of years, and here I was again with a South Indian thali, and a ghee sambhar idly (steamed fermented rice-lentil cakes/dumplings). The sambhar idly was pretty good. The thali was a little confusing though. The spice profile was that of a south indian cuisine but it didn't match up to it's counterparts in the South Bay. Strangely, the rice was a teeny tiny portion (unusual), and it even has a medium sized puri (atypical). The taste was decent but not memorable. The "to-go breakfast" from a few years ago a four-star meal, but the rest of it was an average three-star. All-in-all, my experience with this restaurant thus far is 3-stars. read more

I knew Udupi Palace from their crazy-busy location on Valencia in the Mission, and it was a really satisfying meal of South Asian vegetarian delights amid the hipster cacophony (review: http://bit.ly/2vDb9zT). I came here on an extremely deserted afternoon, New Year's Eve, because I was looking for a little lunch as I was strolling among the shops closed for the holidays around downtown Berkeley. I entered to find the space completely empty even of staff. I was about to turn around and head over to the Chaat Cafe across the street when a quiet voice told me to take any table I wanted. I reacquainted myself with their menu full of dosas, curries, rice plates, and uthappams which I think are like Indian-styled tostadas. I broke from my nutritionally sensitive habits and ordered the $5.50 Medu Vada, which consisted of two savory lentil doughnuts deep-fried and served with sambar, chutney and raita (photo: http://bit.ly/2HnruhP). Do you realize how long it had been since I had a doughnut? I have to admit I was s bit giddy as I carefully devoured them, even if they didn't have chocolate frosting, powdered sugar, or rainbow sprinkles on them. I thought that would be the end of my self-inflicted indulgence when I ordered the $11.95 Avial Curry Platter which was described as fresh vegetables cooked in a mild coconut sauce. What kind of restaurant that calls itself udupi palace doesn't even know how to make idlis? How hard it is to make idlis? It is definitely not what you expect texture wise and the shape is like omg, just look at the picture! Their sambar is horribly tasteless. Had a major Dosa craving and started looking up places that were the closest to us. Found Udupi Palace and decided to hike it up expecting that it won't be as great as what you get in South Bay. Ordered 3 dishes - rava, Paneer Curry Dosa, and Chettinad Cauliflower Uttapam. Few bites down of the Paneer Dosa and I became a huge fan, it was exactly like what I've eaten in India with the most flavorful stuffing (generous portion too). The Sambar was better than a lot of places in India too which was a sweet surprise. The Rava could have been slightly more cooked and for the Uttapam, it tasted better after air frying for 3 mins the next day. I'm so glad we gave this a shot and I'm 100% going back for that Paneer Dosa and sambar!! read more

Oh wow! This is the most energetically clean sag paneer I've ever had! And it tasted really good. I kept wondering if it's so clean because they don't serve meat here. I need meat to survive but something is so pristine without it. That being said, the poori was way too greasy. I won't eat it next time. The paratha is really yummy. It was a bit pricey. I ended up spending $23 for sag paneer and paratha. But overall it was good. Update: I am so bloated. I haven't been like this in ages. I wonder if it is because of the poori or the paratha??? I got the spinach paneer dosa and my wife got the paneer makhani. I was really happy with my choice, as it was very filling. The spicy dipping sauce really helped round out the flavor. My wife's dish had a nice sweetness to it, but could've used a little more kick -- it was extremely mild. A bit light on the paneer, too. Can't believe it's taken me this long to finally try this place. I had the udupi combo with onion masala dosa. The combo comes with idly (steamed rice thingy) and something else which I can only describe as donut like? Idlies were good (if you are into steamed rice) and the donut thing was also not bad. I think next time I'll probably just get the dosa though. The dosa itself was pretty good but I don't think it's as good as the dosa place in Oakland. The dosa could have been a little more crisp and the filling could have been slightly more flavourful and it would have been 5/5. It's a great option for Indian food in the area but if you really want dosa and are willing to go a little further I would say Oakland is a better bet. read more

So I recently found myself in Downtown Berkeley on a Saturday night, Lo & Behold Vegan Butcher's Son closes at 5pm on Sat & Sun, so what to do, what to do? I rolled on over to Udupi Palace for dinner as this was my second time there. This isn't the place to go to impress a date as that would be Cha Ya for vegan Japanese cuisine yet Udupi Palace is quite alright in a simple setting. I spent three years abroad in India over several winters & a significant time in S. India so appreciate pure-veg S. Indian food. If you aren't familiar w/ South Indian food here is a great place to give it a try. As far as I know this is Berkeley's only all vegetarian Indian restaurant so kudos for that. Most of the food is vegan by default yet store manager Jaffar Salik says anything on the menu can be made dairy free & don't worry. As is common in India eggs are considered non-veg so there are no eggs here for those vegans looking to avoid them. Dosas are a gigantic crepe made from fermented & rice filled w/ potatoes, veggies, or spinach. There are eight types of dosas available here. Another option is uthappam, which are pancakes made from the same batter of dosas wrapped in spices w/ options of veggies, hot chilis, or onions. The food here tends to be on the mild side & traditional Indian food especially in India can be super spicy as I have had my taste buds burned off there. If you like things on the spicy side I am sure if you tell the server you would like it spicy they can probably arrange for that. My previous visit I went w/ a friend & I got the Udupi combo for $10.95 that comes w/ your choice of dosa, uthappam & is served w/ idly & menu vada. This is a great option for those unfamiliar w/ South Indian food. My first visit I also shared the samosa chat for $5.50 w/ my friend. This comes w/ samosa & chick peas topped w/ spices. This visit I decided to go w/ the S. Indian Thali for $11.95. I was delighted that this can come vegan upon request. It is quite awesome & comes as a platter w/ soup, curries, rice, & desert. I don't think the vegan version came w/ desert yet there was plenty of other assorted dishes so didn't miss the desert. Thali means meal & I have had heaps of thali all over India as each region has their own variation of the thali. Usually this comes served on a large round metal plate w/ small bowls of assorted dishes. In some places in India you can get an unlimited thali served on a banana leaf & the food literally comes to you as many waiters will bring you the dishes almost being aggressive w/ their serving as it is like a game. Being a vegan in India some of the thali places will offer to spoon ghee over the food yet this can easily be declined. The menu here is quite extensive yet the two best ways to go in my humble opinion is getting the Udupi combo or South Indian Thali made vegan as these are probably the best dishes on the menu! As long as Vegan Butcher's Son continues to close at 5pm on Sat & Sun I know that Udupi Palace makes a great alternative & will be back soon. read more

I was in Berkeley for the EYH event in UCLA and chose this place based on the 4 star rating. Maybe I should have stuck to the safe option Dosa but decided to go with the thali since it has a little bit of everything like a tasting menu! Almost everything was so so or tasted like baby food! The Chana was the worst - no flavor. The bisibelebhath was pasty and I couldn't figure out what it was, it was so bad. The Avial did not taste like avial AT ALLl!! The kurma was flavorless. The other sabhi was a mystery - yellow in color with over cooked veggies. The rasam was thick and spicy. The sambhar was mediocre. The daal was good and tasted like North Indian daal. No offering of a complimentary tea or appetizer etc. the food was okay. Ordered the samosa chaat and spinach paneer dosa. There was way more spinach than paneer in the dosa which was a bit disappointing. The coconut chutney was too sweet. Sambas was ok. The red chutney also wasn't spicy. Usually there is a 4th chutney but that was missing. Samosa chaat was ok but have had better. Probably will not come here again as there are better options out there. read more

It is definitely one of my go to places to get dosa. I usually call them and order ahead. The service is quick. I have dined in as well and it wasn't too crowded. But I prefer take out. I will definitely recommend them for their dosas especially paneer bhurji and Mysore masala dosas. read more

My wife and I used to come here fairly regularly before the pandemic and really enjoyed their food. We returned for the first time since the pandemic yesterday and found that the physical layout had not changed but the menu had slightly. They used to post specials on a board at the entrance of the restaurant. That's no longer there so I ordered the spinach masala dosa which I believe was on the specials board previously. However now they have a spinach masala dosa and a sag paneer dosa as well. The later is spinach and cheese cubes. The presentation was the same as before but the taste was different and was too salty. I felt that they had probably changed chefs since we last came. Similarly, my wife ordered the okra curry dish. That flavor was also different and too salty as well. Previously, one could taste the individual vegetables distinctly, but not now. I asked our server where the chef was from and she said Nepal. The previous chef was either Indian or Nepalese. Our server had only been there 10 months so she was not aware of the changes since the pandemic. Anyway, we were disappointed in the food they were serving currently, very disappointed. We might try again to see if this was a one off dining experience. My true rating is 3.5. read more
