Xpression opened where Urbann Turbann once was. Basic infrastructure same. Indian food with a fast fusion twist. Basically to go biz. 2 tables outside. Offerings: (Indian fusion): rice bowls, wraps, meat/vegetarian options, daily specials, Indian street tacos, Indian Street food, desserts.... Came here after a nearby Nepalese eatery failed to open. Regular menu too confusing at lst glance. Went with the daily wrap specials seen on a sidewalk standing board. Ordered at end of counter where the order station was. Gave order to a guy cooking in the center. Came back to front where the pay station was. The 3 Indians were cheerful, courteous, efficient. Saw naan being made to order in a corner. Was told food would be ready soon. Told them I understood, no need to hurry. Ready in 5 minutes. Bites: Samosa Chaat Wrap (11.99) with drink. -weekend options are better. Very thick & tall burrito (wrap), looked 2" taller than Pepsi can. -contains crumbled samosas, spicy chickpea, yogurt, tangy chutney, cilantro, crunchy sev (deep fried Indian noodle snack), chili, onions all rolled up in a fresh made naan. Thankful chili not too spicy. Was joking with staff that what Indians call mild spicy is really very hot. they smile & laughed. -very pleasant eats with sweet, savory, spicy, crunchy, smooth, & healthy notes. *repeatable with a meat option, less carbs. 4.75 stars Worthy! The older lady (owner?) is rude and condescending. I'm on the line and shes asking me what I want on my plate and im confused because shes asking if I want my cilantro before my meal is cooked, and I said yes I want cilantro fresh, and then she proceeds to shush me, "dont say ddat" in her words, and then puts cilantro on my meat when its cooking, all good because I love cilantro, the sushing was so awkward tho. When my meat is done a nice lady comes and finishes topping my plate with fresh cilantro. Such a weird experience with the older lady. Food is usually good and priced good. But as I can see now, myomy next door has a line 7 deep and expression is empty. Customer service is key and the local students know it! read more

This definitely hit the spot. After leaving the Greek theatre Friday night around 11:30 or so very few available options around, we found this place. We ordered the Tandoori chicken rice bowl, Tandoori chicken Indian Taco, Naan bread and the Veggie (Aloo) Samoosas which was absolutely delicious. Great place in northside! I love the tandoori chicken bowl. It's so tasty yet feels healthy bc it has salad and chicken. The one thing that I would like to see this place do is have more green materials. Always a solid option for takeout Indian fusion food. Though my usual is the butter chicken, I tried the cream chicken combo today and it was super flavorful. They have daily combo deals, but if you end up going with something else, you basically get to make your own wrap/plate. The paneer samosas are also really good. Hearty portions, food is always fresh, and its a great late night option. It's better for takeout than dine in, since there are very limted seats outside and 2 tables inside. read more

I stopped here looking for Urban Turban because it's like Indian food but Chipotle restaurant style. It seems like this place replaced it. It's the same style and everything, but just renamed. Ordered the " Channa Masala " which is an Indo-Pakistani-Punjabi Fried Garbanzo Bean Vegetarian Specialty. It was delivered to my Door within minutes !!! " Miraculously Fresh " along with Brown Rice and Salad Greens for Balance. Sounds like a nice Campus Vicinity Location although I don't know Berkeley too well !!! Good they carry the ' Mazaa Brand Natural Juices ' in a smaller Size. Great Addition here to their Menu. Recommend Trying their Cuisine. The Spicing was Ideal, and Non-Pungent. Yummy !!! Only Desi - Asian spot dat does ' Rice Plates ' which make it slightly more Affordable and Practical !!! I chose Mango flavor on the Juice. Unsure as to what other options exist. Remember reading online previously that it's a smaller space specializing in " To Go Orders " with only about 2 Tables for Eat-In seating. This business replaced Urbann Turbann which had a Chipotle-style fast casual Indian food. Recently Xpression has changed their menu, in a good way in my opinion. Their bowls were a huge amount of food (unless you are a student athlete), but now they've added a smaller portion (less value, but then don't have to worry about leftovers, still a lot of food). I also like their chai and samosas. They've added "street food" which I haven't tried, except for the tacos which are good value. The taco is on a charred tortilla and has the usual fillings with a pickled radish and salsa-like toppings. So I think they have improved things overall with this menu overhaul. read more

I really liked this place! Ordered on Snackpass and it was super quick and convenient. They give you a discount on your first order too. The food here is basically a Chipotle but for Indian food. You choose your base (white/brown rice), whatever type of protein you want (I got the butter chicken), and then you can add whatever fresh veggies and sauce you want to complete the dish. The bowl was packed and filled with plenty of food, and they did not skimp on the amount of chicken. On top of that, it all tasted really delicious which is the most important part. Super solid and very substantial meal for the money! There isn't much (if any) sit down space, so it's definitely a grab and go option (they're on Snackpass too if you want to order ahead). You build bowls/burritos by specifying the main protein and all the sides, very similar to Chipotle, but for Indian food. It's certainly not the best Indian food you can find in Berkeley, but seeing as it's a fast-casual restaurant, the quality and price are quite good. Just a note that they will fill your burrito with so much filling that it barely closes - sounds good at first due to the volume of food, but it's impossibly messy to eat. I stick with the bowls now, which makes it easier to save the remainder to eat later vs. a burrito, which will get all soggy and disintegrate. You've been warned :D The lunch rush can bring some long lines, but since most of the food is already cooked, the assembly is quite fast. At peak lunch rush, you should anticipate a 15 minute wait, or use Snackpass to order ahead. read more

It was only online orders, as walk in customers went in and out ordering freely. There was no sense of urgency despite having costumers who were waiting an additional 30 minutes beyond the "estimated" time. As a quick bites lunch place, this place fails dramatically. this is my FAVORITE restaurant in berkeley! i live on the other side of berkeley but always make the walk here to get their delicious rice bowls and samosas. the portions here are VERY generous and is definitely worth it! absolutely delicious and they are halal, only halal meat served here!!! my roommates and i love coming here as they have something for everyone and works well for most diets! the workers are very welcoming and friendly which makes coming here even more enjoyable. the establishment is clean and has seating outside which is great!! read more

Great campus lunch place. Food is tasty, service is quick, portions are HUGE. I eat veg, and usually get the cholle (garbanzo) and/or paneer curry. The naan wraps are yummy but kinda carb overload (bread AND rice with your curry), so I usually go for the rice bowl, which is still usually more than I want for lunch. You get to pick your toppings, which I really like. Everything I've had has been tasty. The cholle is the lightest, least creamy of the options, so that's what I tend to go for. This is the kind of yummy cheap eats you hope for in a college town. Good stuff. read more

I ordered a wrap delivered and a bowl via ubereats the chicken was super dry in it and was not as it should be I have tried them along time ago when I used to be called urban turban and I did not feel like it was the same quality of food, they have change the name of the restaurant to expression but the sadly thing is the food quality change too. I really miss Urban Turban! I have no idea why they sold their business. It was doing very well. Xpression has some of the best Naan wraps I have ever had. The ingredients are fresh, the cost is inexpensive, and the people who work there are always friendly and patient. I believe they just opened or rebranded which is probably why there aren't many reviews, but don't let that deter you from trying it! read more

TL;DR: bit a piece of glass when eating food from Xpression (photos attached), cashier accused me of putting it there and refused to give a refund or do anything to pinpoint where the glass came from/see if there was glass remaining in any of the food; watch out for glass in your food if you go there anytime soon! I don't think I've ever made a restaurant review or complaint, but the safety issue posed, and the brazen denial and stubbornness to do anything about it on the part of the staff, have inspired me to say something in this case. I have been going to Xpression at least once a week since I started grad school here last year, and it quickly became one of my favorites because the food is really good and the staff is very friendly. Today, I ordered food and ate it during a meeting, and maybe on my 3rd bite, while chewing I bit down on something very hard. I thought it was just a rogue stem or root, but turns out it was a thick piece of glass (pictured). I was really upset because I love this place, but I decided to go back and alert them of this, not only because I felt I deserved a refund, but also because it's a matter of safety. If there's one piece of glass in the food, there is likely more. Here comes the good part: I walk back up to Xpression after my meeting finishes and give them the plate of food (90% of it remains uneaten) with the piece of glass. The older man who normally works the cash register looks at it in disbelief for a few seconds. He begrudgingly offers another plate, but I tell him I'd prefer a refund, since I was worried there might be more glass in the food. He then accuses me of putting the glass there, so he can't give me a refund. He then picks up the piece of glass and slyly brushes it off onto the floor, and does nothing to alert other staff members about the issue. I leave in disbelief and anger (because as a tired and overworked grad student I do not have the time nor the energy to pick a fight when someone is so clearly in the wrong). He tells me to have a good day. It really pains me to write this because I really have come to love this place since moving here, but such an issue of safety should not be so brazenly ignored, and you definitely shouldn't accuse a regular customer when they try to give you an opportunity to correct it! So, just keep an eye out for glass if you go to Xpression anytime soon. read more
