Definitely one of the better Indian/Nepalese restaurants in Berkeley for sure! Service was quick, and they're super accommodating with the spice levels, and make sure to adjust accordingly. The interior is really beautiful and there's lots of natural lighting, so it's really nice to sit inside and eat. This place is pretty good but it's kinda pricey for what they offer. What I got: - Chicken tandoori, mild spice: Impressed with the chicken but not sure if it's worth the $16 price tag. I'm a fan of onions but the onions in this dish were NOT good (not cooked enough so they tasted pungent af) - Palak paneer, medium spice: this spinach dish was actually really great!! Thick, herby, and spicy, probably my new favorite way to eat spinach. The cheese cubes were interesting, I'm not sure if I liked them that much. They weren't gooey/salty like western cheese cubes but resembled tofu cubes in terms of flavor and texture. - Garlic nann: kinda meh compared to other garlic naan I've tried but you should definitely order this because the dishes don't come with rice. I love Nepalese food so I was glad this one was near by. Their tikka masala is so creamy and smooth, and the butter chicken tastes very similar but seems to have more tomato in it. I do wish these dishes came with rice, so don't forget to order some. The garlic naan bread was very fluffy and soft but it was a little burnt. Vegetable pakoras were good, they came with 6 and had two tiny sauce that came with them. I would ask for more sauce of that is important to you. If you love Indian food give this place a try. A friend and I just went here and we both got horrible food poisoning. Initially, we enjoyed our meal, and the portion sizes were generous (although the food is definitely overpriced). However, I ended up with the worst food poisoning I've had for a long time (which started the night after I ate there, so it is definitely because of the restaurant), and I am now reading reviews that say the food is microwaved and conditions are unsanitary, which unfortunately seems to be the cause of this. As a born and raised Berkeley gal this restaurant was one of the places that has been around so long you never end up trying it because it blends in. I was very glad I took a chance though. The food is pretty good! Entrees are around average price (15-20) and of course like most restaurants you have to order everything individually. The bottom floor seating also has a view into the kitchen which is nice but I will admit I would've preferred a slightly brighter room, the string lights and small lamps were not my favorite ambiance. I ordered a dish off their organics special menu, which I thought I could not go wrong with. However, I probably should have just ordered the chicken tikka masala. I got the aanp kukhura, which was basically just chicken in mango chutney. I didn't expect it to be super sweet, which it was. The chicken was cooked decently though. I ordered plain naan to eat my dish with, and I found the naan to be too oily. I tried some of my friend's dish, the chicken chhoilla. It had a nice lemony/tart taste and was nice and savory. I found the service here to be subpar, especially when I kept trying to get the attention of a waitress to get the check and box but she kept ignoring me... also the price is a bit expensive for average food. read more

Food was so good! We got lunch specials (I got the lamb curry), and it was very tasty... the sides that come with the lunch special were delicious... tbh I would come in just for the sides! Prices were quite reasonable, atmosphere was pleasant and reasonably clean. Not a huge fan of religious promotion at the counter, but at the same time, that's what makes living in the United States "the land of the free" with our first amendment :) So while I don't agree with it, I'm not opposed to the proud display of it either. Only reason not 5 stars is: though we were one of only a couple of groups in the whole restaurant (total of maybe 8 people seated?), service was rather unfriendly and inattentive. I've been in and out of the Bay Area for the last 25 yrs. This is the worst restaurant out here by miles. I ordered Chicken Tikka Masala & Chicken Tandoori, and was shocked by the preparation of it. The Tandoori was raw. I took one bite, opened a piece up and wished I hadn't ingested that first piece. The Masala only had a few pieces of chicken in it, and that dish was overcooked. Around $40, and got sick almost instantaneously. Please save your money and do not ever go here. It isn't safe or sanitary. Taking a trip in their restroom tells you everything you need to know. I went in there prior to eating and thought this is going to be rough. Looks worse than a AM/PM toilet off the highway. The place is absolutely disgusting & filthy. One of the best Indian/Nepalese Restaurants in the area! (5/5 green stars) Mount Everest is becoming my go-to local Indian/Nepalese spot. I think it's on-par with my other fav local Indian spot, Flavors of India, and perhaps a little better for ambiance. Good selection of vegetarian and vegan options. If you prefer your curry on the mild side, they do a good job here with reducing the heat but keeping it flavorful. Last visit, we tried the Kacho Alu Tareko from the organic specials menu - potato with a thick coating of spiced chickpea flour, deep fried. I'd never seen that before and I'd recommend it if you're in the market for a hearty appetizer. Also recommend the Malai Kofta and Navratna Korma. Reasonable prices and good service. I'm also giving Mount Everest 4/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons: * A decent number of dishes are vegetarian or vegan. * They have a specials menu that's all organic. * Could do with more local drinks selection (and no PepsiCo). * If you have left-over food, they package it in the typical Chinese take-out boxes. Decided to travel to Berkeley from Oakland as a change of pace for dinner. Craving India/Nepal cuisine we searched Yelp for suggestions and that led us to Mount Everest. I am very happy I did. Th restaurant is a well it, clean room with an open kitchen so one can observe the chefs at work. At the moment almost half the tables were full and then two large parties arrived. This did throw the staff. The service was efficient and friendly. The server was knowledgeable and made some gentle, helpful suggestions. The Samosa chat came first and was delicious with a crispy samosa. My wife had a delicious tandoori chicken with housemade Naan. I am a vegetarian and noticed something on the menu that I had not seen before: Nepalese vegetable chow mein! Despite the less than authentic sounding name I decided to order it. I was not at all disappointed. Lots of slightly crispy moist noodles, plentiful well cooked vegetables in a delicious uniquely flavored sauce. Portions are extremely generous so I recommend coming in hungry or expect to take some home for a later meal. Highly recommended and we both will certainly return. Definitely one of my absolute faves in Berkeley. I remember coming here for the first time when Indian Flavors Express became unavailable as a go-to for Indian food in the areas surrounding campus. Initially lazy to make the slightly further trek down Telegraph, this is now a walk I'm always willing to take to get a great lunch or dinner from Mount Everest. Aside from the traditional Indian fare, they also serve Himalayan cuisine. I LOVE the momos (Himalayan-style dumplings) here. I learned recently that the dough (and everything else) is made completely fresh in-house. Their chicken and vegetable momos have so much flavor, great texture, and come with a great orange sauce that complements the entire dish, without overwhelming it. A+. The curries and naan here have always been consistently satisfactory, and the portions are sufficient and worth it! Their lunch specials are also a great deal, and come with a curry of your choice, naan, and more. I also love the ambiance of Mount Everest at night. They have an upstairs seating area, with low lighting and string lights throughout the restaurant. Knocking off a star because sometimes it's super difficult to catch the attention of servers, and because the food takes a bit long without a forewarning when your order is being taken. Really cutely decorated restaurant with attentive staff! It's a nice option for group dinners; the only thing is it's a little pricey, but you don't get skimped out on anything. I got the fish curry which had decent chunks of baked salmon, and it wasn't bad at all! Terrible. My friend and I still feel sick while writing this review. We ordered the bhindi, paneer tikka masala, pakora, garlic naan, and rice. First of all, it is obvious that most of the food was microwaved before being served to us. This was also evident by our table's view of the chef throwing food into the microwave. Second, as soon as we took bites of the bhindi we knew something was off. As shown in the picture, there was a pool of oil at the bottom. When we mentioned this to the lady, she told us that we ordered a "fried" bhindi dish so this was expected. But this is definitely not normal. Not fresh/authentic at all. Don't recommend. read more

The prices are decent and the service is extremely quick. Samosa ($3.99): Two large samosas. I was dining with 4 people so we just cut them in half. My vegetarian friend thought they were really good, but I think there could have been more filling (it was tasty). The dough/shell was pretty thick. Garlic Naan ($3.50): So yummy we ordered another basket after the first one. Perfect by itself; or dip it into the sauce of your dish. You can never forget the naan. Veggie Momo ($8.99): Pretty good, but the first ever momo I tried was a lot better. The wrapper was kind of thick, but the veggie filling was flavorful. Sauce was good too. 9 pieces for $9-so each piece is a $1. I say that's worth it. Chicken Tikka Masala ($11.99): HIGHLY RECOMMEND! I only ever order chicken tikka masala at these restaurants (guess I'm too basic to branch out lol) but it was the best I've ever had. The chicken was so tender and the sauce was delicious. Creamy and perfectly spiced. It tastes especially good over the basmati rice. The portions seem small (they come in small bowls), but I was stuffed afterwards. Yep, this is my 3,400th review. The back of my neck just started to sweat profusely much like it did when I was at the summit of the real Mount Everest. Yeah right, like I'd spend that much money at REI. No fearless adventurer am I, I saw it from the comfort of a 19-seat aircraft from Buddha Air as we circled around the peak on a clear day. That high up, you can't appreciate that you're looking at the world's highest mountain. It was just the right day and the right time to experience it much like my first visit to this restaurant when I ordered just the right thing on the right evening. Somebody get me a tissue for my neck. For some reason, I've been on a roll with Nepalese food. I came here after a visit to the new Annapurna restaurant in Old Oakland and just before trying the even newer Cuisine of Nepal in Bernal Heights. In other words, I've been on a momo blitz comparing how each one makes them, and hands down, Mount Everest makes the best ones in the area. The $9.99 Chicken Momos are eight steamed pillows of joy that look not like Chinese pot stickers but like the ones I had at the warming huts along the Annapurna circuit. For my entree, I had the good fortune of trying the $11.99 Chicken Coconut, a tantalizing variation on chicken vindaloo with a sweet contrast found in the rich coconut milk (photo: http://bit.ly/29SAkPh). Highly recommend the chicken tikka masala, chicken tandoori (it's pretty spicy), palak paneer, royal paneer, and any type of naan (garlic naan is to die for- we always have to get extra). If you go here, you HAVE to get the mango lassi. Out of all of the Indian restaurants we've been to over the years (which are quite a few), the mango lassis never compare to how amazing they are here. They have just the perfect ratio of mango and yogurt to cool down your mouth if you get something especially spicy. Came during the pandemic and ordering and pickup was so easy! I tried 2 things today that I've never tried before. 1) makhali naan - naan with coconut milk and spices 2) chicken momo - chicken dumplings with sauce As an avid garlic naan eater, I decided to order something different as the 2nd naan. It was delicious. So difficult to describe the flavors...it was pink on the inside and I could see pieces of coconut. I thought it was amazing alone. Both naan that we ordered were cooked perfectly. I loved how they were pillowy with a great chew. Not burnt whatsoever...highly recommend. The chicken momo...basically steamed dumplings served with a curry sauce. What initially reminded me of xlb (Shanghai dumplings)...the flavors were their own and the sauce really accentuated it. The saag paneer and chicken tikka masala were good. Not the best I have ever had...the saag paneer needed more seasoning and the tikka masala was quite thin. It was difficult to pick up with the naan. Still won't deter me from coming back...cause well, I was impressed by the other dishes. The gulab for dessert was ok. For some reason, those are just the best at buffets. Haha. Odd...but true. A very delicious surprise. I came today (31 January 2015) for lunch with a 20 dollar groupon and Mount Everest is definitely a place I will come back to. My friend and I ordered two dishes and a mango lassi (yogurt and mango drink). Dal Bhat Takari (4.5 stars): Absolutely delicious and I hope I spelled the dish's name correctly. This is a traditional Nepalese dish and it comes with naan, salad, and rice, and chicken or vegetable or lamb curry. I took it with a spicy lamb curry. The salad is a stewed potato, cauliflower, and carrot and it was delicious and warm with the naan, curry, and rice. There was also pickled radish and a rice dessert that looks like a donut hole. The portions were huge and they gave me one large piece of naan quartered. Sizzling lamb platter (4 stars): The lamb pieces were huge, but this dish was more dry, unlike curry. The spices were good, but the lamb was a little too dry, it should be more moist. However, it was still good, but it also didn't come with rice or naan so my friend shared with me which was perfect since I had way too much food with the Dal Bakarti. Mango Lassi (5 stars): Yummy, creamy, and refreshing. So rich and cold and delicious. Worth 3 bucks. Service (4 stars): The waitresses were polite, attentive, and efficient. They refilled our water promptly and our food came out in a timely manner. They did forget my mango lassi for a moment, but overall, the service was fine. The bathroom however needs to be aired out-- my friend says it was stale so they should open the window a bit more often. read more

This restaurant is about as close to Mount Everest as I'm ever going to get. That mountain is a great place if a person wants to die. But the only thing that mountain had to do with this spot is the type of food the people eat in that region of the earth. We bought a $25 restaurant.com certificate to eat here. So the only requirement is to order $50 worth of food. The food is really over priced, so I believe they have the certificates factored in the pricing of the entrees, etc. Here's what we ordered: Vegetable Samosas: this dish was actually just potato samosas, bland and flavorless. I would pass on ordering this appetizer if I came again. Chicken momos: anything in dumpling form accompanied with a spicy sauce I will like. So the momos were a pleasant snack. Lamb tikka masala: they were a little skimpy with the lamb but the sauce was decent. I preferred the tikka masala over the curry sauce. Chicken curry: this dish had a generous amount of chicken in an "ok" curry sauce. Nothing special. Chicken briyani: the briyani was ok, I've had much better in previous Indian restaurants I've been to. The service was adequate. Ambience was comfortable. The restaurant seemed to have a steady amount of business which indicates to me that this is an acceptable establishment. But overall nothing stood out to me. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good enough for me to come back for more. Mount Everest Restaurant is our new go-to (well deliver to) We typically order royal paneer, pakoras, for the vegetarians. Chicken Tikka Masala and Karahi chicken for the meat eaters. The royal paneer is very aromatic. The taste is different from other gravies. Many rest use the same gravy for everything. But, this one tastes different. Vegetarian Pakoras- I used to order their pakodas when it rained lool when Uber Eats just came out and nothing has changed then. It's still as amazing. We also order Naans. Garlic and Honey Naan, the honey Naan sort of conceals the spiciness of the dishes so it's really good, but sticky! The garlic Naan is also well seasoned and tasty! My uncles eats the meat dishes, they love the flavor and the chicken is just right. However, if we order it medium spicy, its super spicy, even us Indians. So definitely order mild spicy? Turn down the incense and turn up the lighting please! It was way too fragrant and a little dark. I like to see the menu and my food especially when it's so good. The pungent incense smell faded once we got done eating. Other than that, I think this place is fabulous and it's my sisters favorite. Romantic restaurant, lights are dimmed & tables are arranged in an intimate fashion. The three of us ordered the vegetable pakori, lamb vindaloo, butter chicken, & chicken tikka masala. The pakori lacked any flavor and any substance. It was mostly deep fried batter- way too expensive for 5 pieces. The vindaloo had great flavor, but was just too salty, even when dipped with naan. The lamb was good, no game.y taste at all. Tikka masala was just OK, didn't taste spectacular or anything. Didn't have that sweet taste that I love and often look for. Butter chicken was delicious, but probably because anything made with butter just can't go wrong. Our bill was 62$ for three dishes, 4 naans, and 2 drinks. Because we don't live in Berkeley, and this restaurant is in the heart of downtown, we probably won't go back because it's just out of the way. read more

Came here for some lunch on a Saturday and it is a cozy place on the corner. They have an extensive menu of Nepalese and Indian food. We decided to get the lunch specials which are also good for the weekend. My friend ordered the curry chicken lunch special and I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala lunch special. The special comes in a round plate with 4 pieces of naan, rice, chick peas, salad, and of course the entree. All were delicious and the price was reasonable for $9.99 each. TL;DR: smaller portions than expected, really good chicken dishes, good but different naan I've been meaning to try this restaurant for a long while, especially since I walk by it almost every day. Mount Everest providing a surprising ambience with pretty good food. One thing that caught me by surprise was the serving size. I was expecting a much bigger serving of food, but I still got full off what I ordered. I ordered the Chicken Vindaloo with a side of Plain Naan to share. CHICKEN VINDALOO (4/5) - Ordered with medium spiciness and really not spicy at all - Really good sauce to pour over rice - Super tender chicken and delicious potatoes PLAIN NAAN (3/5) - A good side, but not exactly what you'd expect of naan (very doughy) - Great to dip in curries or sauces from main dishes I think this would make for a very great date location. It's a dimly lit dinner with a candle on the table. What more can you ask for?
