I came here for lunch on a Saturday with Ken L. It was pretty empty when we arrived. The decoration and ambiance of the restaurant was pretty cool. Since it was our first time, we were going off yelp reviews and pictures for what to order. We ended up ordering the garlic naan, chicken momo, butter chicken, samosas, and a cup of chai tea. The food was pretty average to what I've experienced at other places. You can't go wrong with naan, samosas, and butter chicken. It was my first time having chicken momo and I was a little underwhelmed. I'm a big fan of dumplings but this one tasted a bit bland just like the chai tea. Maybe it would be better to come during the week too take advantage odd their lunch specials. Otherwise, Berkeley has so many other Indian restaurants to choose from and many I have yet to try. read more

This is a fun restaurant. The food is very good and they have a nice selection of India and Nepalese beers and a pretty good wine selection. They prepare the food right over a counter that divides the kitchen from the dining area, which is a nice touch. The staff is nice and friendly. If there is a problem with this restaurant it would be that there seems to be several food runners but only one person talking the orders. For example, the last time that I ate there, though we were immediately seated and our water glasses were always full, it took them over fifteen minutes to actually take our order. This is not a criticism, this is simply something to keep in mind if you plan to eat here. Overall, good place. read more

Stopped by this spot after visiting the nearby Hare Krishna temple on my boyfriend's birthday. He's Nepalese, so Nepali/Indian fare is our fave! The interior is cozy and elegant. There are a few longer tables so that they can accommodate larger parties despite the smaller size. The wait staff is wonderful! They're kind and knowledgeable (they handled my dairy allergy with ease). However, I do feel that they couldve been more attentive at times. It took a while for them to take our order. My boyfriend and I ultimately decided to order the lunch specials which included: an entree, a side of garbanzo beans, naan or roti, a salad, and rice. I was expecting the portions to be on the smaller side, but they were served in sizeable steel platters-traditional and filling! We also started the meal off with an order of veggie momo (which turned out to be vegan! yaaaaay!) All in all, this spot is nice. I wouldve appreciated a slightly more crispy momo (I usually pan fry mine at home) but the spices were delicious and aromatic. I've been wanting to go here to a while and wasn't disappointed by the food or service. The mango lassi was pretty standard like other Indian restaurants. The himalayan fried chicken was pretty good and different from what I usually eat at Indian places. The chicken was juicy but was disappointed in its saltiness. The Palak Paneer was good. A mix of spinach, herbs and cheese. Not a common dish I would order, but definitely will order this again. The Paneer Tikka Masala was my favorite dish. I loved to eat this with the naan and the sauce was so creamy! We ordered it medium, so it wasn't too spicy. I think I'll order it Spicy the next time I go. Delicious food!!!! I got pick-up take out and it was super easy. There was a bag at the front with my name on it and I just grabbed it, said thank you to the kitchen, and left. I got an amazing vegetable korma and my friend got the chicken vindalu. Both absolutely delicious. Super flavorful. Thick creamy sauce. I got my dish spicy and it was perfect. Not ridiculously spicy, but hot enough that my lips were burning. Highly recommend these two dishes! Garlic naan was okay, not the best. I came late in the evening so maybe it was a little old by that time. Better once I stuck it in the toaster oven for a couple minutes to toast up. Then it was warm & soft & delicious!! Very rude owner, never coming back here again, the food is good but service is shitty

I get takeout quite often from here. My go-to is the Lamb Tikka Masala, an order of plain naan, and the chicken momos. The Lamb is soft and easy to cut or tear apart. The sauce is creamy and rustic, and you can't go wrong with any of the spiciness levels. The flavor of the mild is just as strong as the medium, no worries about losing flavor with less spice! The momos are a lot more complex than I expected and come with a rich sauce to dip. The portions are great for college students! They open at 5pm so I usually schedule for 5:30 pickup and my food has been ready on time every time. The staff is very polite when they confirm your order and your on your way pretty quick. What a cute restaurant! The staff here were very nice and the food came out quickly when we went. We were there for dinner at 5 pm and it was near empty. The food was delicious! We had their garlic naan, the chicken korma, and the butter chicken. My only complaint is that the toilet seat in their bathroom is broken. Mount Everest is a little far from campus but it's the perfect place for lunch. For around 10 dollars (a little less for vegetable entrees and more expensive for speciality items), you'll get a side of salad, a main entree, channa masala, four pieces of naan and a side of rice. The side of salad was small and had carrots and cucumbers, and lettuce and had ranch dressing and mango syrup. It wasn't an amazing salad but the mango kept it interesting and it was a good start to the meal. I got the chicken tikka masala for my entree and it was just enough and delicious. It was flavorful and spiced perfectly. The garbanzo beans were well spiced as well but it seem to be undercooked. It was a little too crunchy for my taste. The naan was delicious and fluffy, probably the best in the east bay. By the end of the meal, I was full and struggled to finish the last few bites. I also got the mango lassi and it was like any other mango lassi, maybe a little more yogurt tasting than others. The service was attentive and was constantly filling up water. Overall, it was a great lunch. If you ever have time to go here I would recommend it! read more

The Mount Everest Restaurant has four out of five stars on Yelp, so my boyfriend and I had high hopes when we went out here for an early Saturday night dinner. Gotta say, we left disappointed and completely baffled--how could we have gotten led so astray by our fellows on Yelp? I admit--I've never had Nepali/Himalayan food before. But I am a HUGE fan of Indian food, so I was excited to try some new things and get some naan and curry. Even at 7pm or so, the restaurant was only about a third-full, so we got our order in quickly--chicken momo, chicken chhailla, shrimp curry, and garlic naan. The service was lovely, but it was a rough meal from the start. Chicken momo is a Tibetan street food snack--small, circular dumplings filled with ground chicken and spice. I loved the dipping sauce, but was surprised about how thick the dumpling casing was. The ratio of filling-to-dough seemed wildly off because of it (I kept feeling like I was eating overly doughy pot stickers), and I didn't want to get too full, so I ended up having a couple and then easing off. Now I wish that I'd just torn off half the dumpling casing and eaten it that way, as I probably enjoyed this dish the best. The garlic naan was fine. I'm simple enough--garlicky, hot, buttery naan? I'm in. But the entrees it was served with didn't allow me to enjoy it much. The shrimp curry was a bland, tikka masalaish dish, with a few pieces of shrimp in it and not much else. It was fine I guess, but I don't want to pay $13 for something unmemorable that makes me look around for hot sauce. The chicken chhailla was the most disappointing though. The menu describes it as "chicken cubes grilled in a clay oven, mixed with traditional Nepalese spices." The chicken was not only dry, but wasn't... actually hot. At all. I think it might have been cooked and left out while everything else was being prepped? If the chicken had been moist, and the dish served hot, this would have been excellent because the spices were actually incredibly lovely! But the dish is 95% chicken, 4% veggies (maybe a generous estimate--the veggies are mostly onions), 1% spice, so there wasn't a lot to distract me from the fact that the chicken just wasn't any good. Yelpers love this place, so maybe this was an off-day of a meal. But boy, this first visit was a pricey disappointment. read more

This is my favorite Indian restaurant close to Berkeley's campus. They have a great lunch special, but a lot of the dishes that I love or off of the actual menu. Make sure to get the vegetable pakora as an appetizer, and order your fair share of garlic naan. My go-to entrees are butter chicken, chicken vindaloo, or the coconut chicken curry. Getting the coconut chicken curry spicy is perfect, and they definitely bring the spice. read more

I went to Mount Everest with a friend for dinner one evening. The reviews seemed very positive, and we were looking forward to our meal! We showed up around 6:00pm, and the place had plenty of available seating. It didn't seem too crowded. We sat down, and were quickly given waters and menus. The service here is certainly quite fast, and friendly as well. It was the food that let me down. We ordered Aloo Tikki chaat, Dahi Papdi chaat, and Paneer Tikka Masala. The Dahi Papdi chaat was the first to come out, and it was not what I was expecting at all! Dahi papdi chaat is usually yogurt based (it's in the name- Dahi means yogurt!) and there were barely two little drops of yogurt in this dish. We were both immensely disappointed. Our disappointment continued when the rest of the food arrived. The aloo tikki was the exact same dish as the Dahi Papdi chaat but with a potato patty instead of crispy bits. We basically had two of the exact same dish, which is also very unauthentic. The paneer tikka masala was ok, it was bland, but the paneer was cooked well and was nice and chewy. The three things we got were more than enough food for two, and we had some leftovers as well. I came to Mount Everest with high expectations, and I do not think that it was quite up to par. There are plenty of other Indian restaurants around to satisfy a craving. If you want to come to Mount Everest, I would recommend trying the momos (maybe Nepalese food is their specialty and Indian isn't). read more

These were my fav but I can also feel my face breaking out. PALAK DAL (spicy request): The spicing tasted indian. A light dish--not heavy oily. Just the right amount of heat. But... the spinach had no spinach flavor? Again-- I think they use too much water to "spread" the rations. CHANNA MASALA (spicy request): SWIMMING in Water. Chickpeas were firm but clearly coulda been cooked down more. I'd rather a restaurant suggest an alternate dish if the beans haven't cooked down & melded the way they're supposed too. Came here for lunch in the middle of a work day with a group of 6. There was pretty much no one else dining in the restaurant so we got seated as soon as we walked in. The lunch specials were a great deal. Lots of food - I took half for lunch the next day - and for a good price. Good place to come with a mixed group of vegetarians, vegetarians, and meat eaters. After trusted friends who have lived in Berkeley for TWELVE years told me this was their second favorite restaurant in East Bay, I decided I had to try it. My boyfriend and I went for the lunch specials in order to get the deals the restaurant offers from 11 AM to 3 PM. I ordered the chicken tikka masala ($10) and my boyfriend got the tandoori chicken ($11). About 20 minutes after we ordered, our dishes came out- accompanied by a sad excuse for a salad (old carrots, apple slices, dry lettuce...but are you really coming to Everest for the salad?), delicious lentils, rice, and the best regular naan I have ever had. My portion was considerably smaller than his, especially given the small price difference, but we both ended up feeling very full after we had finished our meals. Really everything except the salad was very good, but I'm not quite convinced I would call it my second favorite restaurant in East Bay. Four stars for now. read more

Came here with a group of 5 on a Friday night and was really happy to be seated right away! After having passed this place multiple times my past 3 years here, I was excited to finally try it. First off, let me say that I was super disappointed when Indian Flavors Express closed last year because then there weren't any good Indian places right near campus (don't you dare suggest House of Curries). But after Friday night, I'm happy to say that Mount Everest has filled that spot! First of all, their menu is huge so there's definitely something in there for all sorts of people. A friend and I shared paneer tikka masala and bhindi baji with two orders of naan and left feeling extremely full and happy. The paneer tikka was flavorful and the curry was the right thickness, not too watery like some other places. It was actually my first time having bhindi baji at a restaurant and while it was good, I probably would opt for malai kofta or something else the next time I come. The only negative thing is that it can be a bit pricey since you have to order naan separately but worth it every once in a while when your missing good Indian food. read more

Currently my favorite Indian joint in Berkeley, and it's conveniently right by my house. Their momos are so good here that we always get a plate as an appetizer. Nine perfectly formed little dumplings with just enough orange sauce to add zing. You might not have considered the veggie version since there's a chicken option, but the light minced veg is amazing. Goat vindaloo is my favorite dish here, just nuggets of tendon and fat on small cuts of bone. The lamb sag is also great, with so much creaminess without any dairy used at all. Get a side of rice and a paratha or naan, and you're set for two people. The decor is comfortable, with lights lining the ivy. Not a bad casual date night, even if service is on the slower side but it's largely that the servers leave you plenty of time to linger and chat. The servings were small and the prices were high, so we had high hopes. Vegetable Samosas - they were pretty bad. Dry, hard to bite into, and a bit tasteless. Garlic Naan - it tasted overly sweet which made the entire dish unappetizing. Lamb Vindaloo - pieces were big, but meat was tough. The flavor was a bit bland. Stopped in to get dinner, and definitely was not disappointed! Both entrees I had were fantastic, got medium+ spice level and it was perfectly spicy! While the dishes are a bit on the expensive side, I only ate half before I was full and had a second meal for the next day! The only thing I thought was questionable was that nothing came with rice, you had to buy a side of rice. Personally I believe rice should just come with the meal, especially since it's a little expensive, but it was really delicious and I will certainly be back!
