While on a road trip to meet a friend in San Diego for a concert, I stayed a little outside of the city in Mission Valley to save some money. As I pulled into the hotel, I spotted a Randy's Donuts sign at the adjacent strip mall. It wasn't open 24 hours (or I would have absolutely dropped in), but I took note of the hours and knew I had to go back in the morning before hitting the road into the city the next day. Randy's has some of the best yeast donuts ever, and they're among my favorites. The original location has been my go-to whenever I am in Los Angeles, and my tummy was excited to see a location in San Diego! The place was bustling around 9:30 the next morning (a Saturday). There was a table of old timers who were obviously local regulars, as well as some construction workers and yuppies walking their designer dogs. There was a short line to order, but the shop had plenty of employees who were friendly, welcoming, and efficient. They moved the line quickly, which is nice if you just want to grab a sweet treat without waiting forever. The display case was full of so many tasty looking donuts and flavors! Nutella, butter crumb, blueberry cake, maple glazed, and more. Of course, I'm a traditional donut type of gal so I went with one of the original raised yeast glazed donuts. They were so fresh and yummy! I've never had a bad donut from Randy's, and today was no exception. The oil was fresh, the donuts were soft, and the flavors were delicious. I'd say this Randy's feels a bit like your classic donut shop rather than some next‑level destination. These aren't Insta-worthy treats or anything like that, but good, solid, traditional pockets of sweet, fried dough. Sometimes that's all you need, just a basic donut that tastes delicious. read more

We were welcomed in as soon as we walked through the door. The variety of donuts depends on the time of day you go. Of course the earlier you go the better the selection but there is always something tasty to choose from. My favorite is the chocolate old fashion and the crumb donut. YUM!!! They also have a great selection of coffee drinks and beverages. The store pays tribute to San Diego as well as the original Randy's in Inglewood. Plenty of seating inside to enjoy your treats too. I have already tried Randy's Donuts twice. My first one was delicious, and the Donuts are soft like freshly made. For my second time around, I tried Randy's Donuts here in Murphy Canyon. I got the Red Velvet and the Maple raised donut with churros . They look good but are very Dry. I'm not sure how long they've been sitting there in their store because both of my Donuts are dry. I first tried Randy's donuts at their location in LA, so I was so happy to hear that they opened another location in San Diego! They have an extensive variety of donuts, bars, twists, croissant donuts, etc. I absolutely loved their butter crumb donut which was fluffy, chewy, and had a delightful crumble on top that wasn't too sweet! Alright, so I was passing by this place, and i saw these cars . Well, me being me , I need to know why I had not heard of Randy, especially when I LOVE donuts. So I decided to ask this lady as she was carrying her dozen. I assume it was a dozen cause it was long by my truck. "Excuse me, who is Randy?" With a puzzled face, she said, I don't know."So, I said are the donuts good, in that moment, the lady closed her eyes."I responded, "OK, as I unbuckled my seat belt and got out my truck." The store was clean, and the employees were SUPER nice because I came in the door with my sense of humor asking ,"WHO IS RANDY!" They laughed that made the trip even more enjoyable when you have fun people that are not uptight. They recommended different donuts . My favorite is the donut that is like a Crescent. The donuts are pretty good. They have a wide variety of donuts and several on the huge side for those with a healthy appetite for big donuts. Place can be busy in the morning so running here for a donut and coffee may not be feasible before work. Most of the patrons when I visited were buying by the dozen so it took a little time for just 2 donuts. When they run out of donuts for the day, that's it for the day so go early. Line management can use a little improvement. The line can block the entrance when busy. Line does move respectively when people know what they want. read more

Randy's Donuts in San Diego now? Score! This was right by our hotel, so we stopped here a few times during our stay. I grew up really close to the OG Randy's in LA, so I knew what they were all about. Both days, I went with their Raised Butter Crumb. Its the best donut in the world, and I will ALWAYS order at least one when coming to Randy's. Service was great both times there. Why the 4 stars? Something was just a tad "off" with the donuts. Like they were cool/cold instead of fresh/warm. They weren't bad by any means, and were still delicious, but the OG Randy's in Inglewood and the one on Rosecrans in El Segundo just flat out taste better/fresher. Will definitely come back though when I'm in San Diego! That Raised Butter Crumb is a must try. Its the perfect donut, IMO. So good! read more

You can also get different drink options with toppings such as boba. And there are a variety of donut flavors including matcha, maple infused churro and Nutella. Finally got a chance to come visit this establishment! I was greeted pleasantly by the employee who had a smile on her face the whole time. They have a great variety of cake and raised donuts. I only tried the raised as I'm not a fan of cake donuts but I must say, the cake ones also looked enticing so I'll be coming back to try those in the Future! I ordered the chocolate raised, sprinkles raised and coffee raised. While the donuts reminded me of mom and pop shop donuts, what set Randy's apart is their flavor! Their donuts are flavorful and the amount of frosting is a good layer... Not too thin but not too thick. We thoroughly enjoyed the donuts we chose! Hey, did you know that Randy's Donuts or Doughnuts has come done from Inglewood, Los Angeles to San Diego, California. No, really, they have. They are down on Murphy Canyon Road. I was driving by, and it was like, "Hey, it's Randy's Donuts, I am in!" I've never been, so the very nice lady helped me out and recommended the Butter Crumb Raised, which was a great choice, and I chose the Lemon Old Fashion, which was terrific. They didn't have a cortado on the menu, so I ordered the Caffè macchiato. I loved the lemon flavor and texture of the lemon old fashion. The frosting was lemony, and so was the cake part of the doughnut. The Butter Crumb was fantastic. It was super soft and tasted great. It was a winner. I do plan to return to try some new flavors. This place needs a slamma jamma 6 out of 5 star rating let me tell you what, I've had many a donut and a donut hole and this place could put the holes in my mouth hole any day of the week! I just want through $7 in the trash. I bought 2 donuts. They were absolutely the worst donuts I have ever had. One was a 'crondy' the other a raised coffee. They both had a horrible old oil taste that is awful and does not go away. The raised coffee had no coffee flavor. It was disgustingly sweet. The small bite I took was the heaviest doughiest donut I have ever eaten. It is even heavy to pick up. The dough inside is raw. It is also obvious that the donuts are not made on site and are brought in from another location. These are not designer or premium donuts. They are sub par with cereal or broken cookies/churro on top. Chula Vista has enough that are not on site donut shops like Donut Bar and Crispy Crème. read more

I tried Randy's Donuts for the first time recently, selecting some of my favorite types to sample. Here's what I thought: Strawberry jelly donut: Five stars - delicious! Glazed buttermilk bar: Three stars - decent. Plain buttermilk bar: Two stars - dry. Apple fritter: Five stars - fantastic! Crumb doughnut: Three stars - a bit too doughy. Blueberry glazed cake doughnut: Three stars - somewhat dry. Blueberry frosted cake doughnut: Five stars - great flavor. I tried this new(ish) location of Randy's donut and was SO excited!! The building was tucked away in a corner and it was bright and clean inside. The teen running the cash register was sweet but had no clue what was going on. He was busy talking to his co-workers. ‍‍ When I ordered he told me they were sold out... but they weren't. The kind man behind me helped me order and told the young man what was in stock. Bless this kind delivery man for knowing the menu/stock better than the workers! So happy to have finally tried this donut shop! As a child I remember always seeing the iconic donut sign in LA but never getting a chance to stop and try it out so I was beyond excited to hear one opened in San Diego. They had a variety of options but we went with the chocolate long John with cream, raised maple churro, and bear claw (shared with my friends) lol. All three were sooo yummy! Very soft and rich in flavor. I will say the only thing I didn't care for was the churros on top of the raised maple donut. They were a bit too hard. My favorite donut was the chocolate long John with cream filling. The dough was pillowy soft and the cream was a not too sweet. I believe it was a Bavarian style cream 10/10. The service was also great! The line wasn't too long maybe about 4-5 people and we got out of there quick. I also want to mention the Parking is great since it's in a shopping plaza. The ambiance was super cool it was very clean and had cool decor. My favorite was the wall art displaying all of the pictures of different places Randy's donuts has been featured! Also on the opposite side is a big replica of the iconic Randy's donut we all see in movies. It's so cute and perfect for a photo op. All in all I give this place a 10/10 and highly recommend! read more

Came here around 9:30 in the morning and got 2 dozen donut holes, called Randy's Rounds. Glazed $5 for a dozen, Iced $6 per dozen, and Topped $7 per dozen. I got a dozen iced and glazed. Glazed are just like a plane glazed donut, iced are either chocolate or maple I got 6 of each. They were pretty good but all pretty dry. The donuts had a nice crispy outside which I think is the appeal, but the inside was kinda dried out. I guess Randy's has been an LA staple for a long time, but I think the donut game as progressed a lot in the last 10 years. So the flavors might have been a big hit 50 years ago but today they aren't that special. I was surprised that at 9:30 they were pretty dry already. One thing I did notice that there were racks of donuts just resting in the open air behind the counter. I think that's what accounts for them being dry, if they were put immediately into the case where there was limited air flow they might stay moist for longer. I think they should make less donuts more often to keep them fresher and only enough to fit in the case so they stay moist. Staff was friendly, there was lots of parking in front though the location is a little out of the way sort of behind McDonalds. The donuts were ok, although I only got donut holes, I thought the regular donuts were a bit on the pricy side. read more

There was nobody in the shop when I arrived around 12pm. Little did I know that they sell out of their popular donuts really fast! Once they sell out of that flavor, they claim to not make more for that day. Overall I would like to come back to try their other flavors! And prob get the crumble one again! I was looking forward to try their regular donuts wasn't actually interested in the fancy ones. But they were out of the basic chocolate glazed and original glazed! I asked them for recs and they told me to try their crumble donut WHICH IS SO GOOD!!!! The crumble melts in your mouth. I also thought the crandy was so good! Which is the Randy's take on a cronut. Flaky! Also got the apple fritter which my hubby thought was burnt/overdone. The chocolate twist was also totally forgettable too. read more

I attended Randy's Donuts grand opening and the line was around the building.  I met Iron Man and friendly employees brought out glazed donuts. Glazed donut was fresh off the rack and had that heavenly fresh donut aroma.  Sweet yeast based donut was soft and fluffy.  Melted in my mouth.  Loved the sweet flavor. Apple fritter had a crispy outer layer and soft inner layer.  Sugary glaze on top adds lots of sweetness while the plentiful apples give this treat a burst of apple flavor.  One of my favorite apple fritters due to the plentiful apples.  I only ate half as it was huge and too sweet to eat the whole fritter. Sugar raised donut was a traditional yeast based donut which was fluffy and sugar sprinkles provided just the right amount of sweetness.  Loved the flavor. Blueberry glazed cake donut was full of blueberry bits in the cake batter and in the sugary glaze.  Sweet and full of blueberry flavor.  Very good tasting as long as you love blueberries. Randy's donuts has an excellent selection of traditional donuts at traditional prices.  Staff is very friendly and helpful.  Next time I think I'll try a cinnamon roll and an old fashioned. read more

Came here on a Tuesday morning when I had CPR in the area. I had been wanting to try it but was worried about lines. There was one customer leaving when I showed ip. I was greeted and asked for time to try and decide what to get. I decided to pick up some donuts foe my family to enjoy. Donuts I got: 1. Maple long john with bacon-premium 2. Blueberry cake-deluxe 3. Blueberry iced cake-deluxe 4. M&M raised-fancy 5.Chocolate long john-deluxe 6. Butter crumb raised-fancy The chocolate long john was for me and I snarfed it down. It was tasty. The blueberry donut was ok. I have had better from other donut shops. Kidlet only ate a few bites of their M&M raised. My husband said the maple long john with bacon had too much bacon. The butter crumb was not good. I can't even describe the taste. It was like a donut with a bitter taste (closest description I have is sour cream) and it was crumbly. It didn't taste like a cake donut or a a regular donut. I had none of the blueberry iced donut and no one gave feed back so it must have been ok. Something to note. These donuts are PRICEY (hence why I put what tier of donut they fall into. I assume deluxe is the least expensive then fancy then premium. They also have classic. I got 6 donuts and it was $17.90. The inside is small and doesn't have tables or seating. They have a painted decorative wall. It was clean and bright. Overall a solid spot I would go to if in the area but wouldn't go out if my way to go. read more

Friendly and welcoming staff, minimalist aesthetic (no tables or seats), above average doughnuts - better than chains (Dunkin' and KK), but not at the level of some craft shops (Sidecar and Blue Star are tops). Reminds me of Donut Bar. We recommend the crondy for the texture, and the butter crumb for the flavor. S'mores and Cinnamon Toast Crunch were overly sweet.
