All of the dishes looked very pretty and aesthetic! The matcha latte tiramisu did not have a very strong tiramisu flavor, but the matcha tasted good. The toast was decent - nothing particularly special. The beignets were very delicious, and if anything I would recommend trying those! Between Us has been on my list for the longest time. After finally trying it, my only regret is not coming sooner because everything we ordered was delicious. We walked in around 12:40 without a reservation. They close at 2:30, but we were still seated pretty quickly. Every employee we interacted with was genuinely friendly. The service never felt rushed even though we came close to close. I also had no idea we walked in during their "US Hour" from 12:00 to 2:30, so that ended up being a nice surprise. They offer $7 draft beers, $9 wine, $10 mimosas, plus a handful of bites for $9. We started with the Fried Calamari Tentacles from the US Hour menu. They're served with Japanese mayo, although it tasted like there was some citrus mixed in because it had a nice tangy kick. Whatever it was, it worked really well with the crispy calamari. To drink, I ordered the Yuzu Matcha Mimosa. It had a really vibrant green color that almost reminded me of green juice. I actually enjoyed it. The matcha flavor came through without getting lost. My friend wasn't the biggest fan because they thought it leaned a little too bitter, so I think this one depends on how much you already enjoy matcha. For my entree, I ordered the Duck and Waffles ($24), which comes with crispy duck confit, a waffle, passionfruit guava sauce, and chili crunch. This was easily the highlight of the meal. The duck was cooked perfectly. It was crispy on the outside, tender inside, and seasoned just enough to let the meat shine. I also appreciated that the chili crunch actually had some heat instead of just being there for texture. The waffle was light and fluffy. A new brunch spot located in NP run by the young new owners of Thai Time across the street. "Between Us" is aptly named with some fusion, "in-between" offerings ranging from Curry Hamburg (Japanese), ube dips (Filipino), Duck Waffles (Chinese fusion), Latke Benedict (Jewish fusion), Beignets (Cajun) and Shakshuka (North African). We had the Beignets (5 for $12) to share, and I ordered the Curry Hamburg ($20), a Black Sesame Latte ($7) w/ a shot of Matcha (+$2), and a Matcha Yuzu Mimosa ($13) for myself. The beignets, perfectly shared between the 5 of us, were a bit too dense and possessed a weirdly hard outer crust. The matcha cream and black sesame mascarpone serving as dips made them a little more enjoyable. The black sesame latte was deliciously nutty, but the matcha shot at the $2 up charge was exorbitant. (Note: This is their only caffeine addition -- along with hojicha -- as they do not have an espresso machine). I was very disappointed in the Curry Hamburg, unfortunately. This was a failed attempt at omurice. The egg, while plentiful, was not even seasoned. Further, the equally unseasoned hamburger patty was very dry and the sauce over-salty. They should have distributed the salt and seasoning throughout the dish because it lacked serious balance. They just added beer and mimosas, so the Matcha Yuzu Mimosa, though overkill with the Matcha (and likely wasted), did ease the ache some. I made reservations online via OpenTable where I had to put a credit card down and agree to the seemingly shady policy regarding party changes within a 24 hour period. We were seated immediately, but they gave us a table with some weird wooden fold-up chairs. Our table was strangely the only one with these uncomfortable chairs. This review is mainly reflective on the service and how long it took for our food to come out. We originally planned on going to Morning Glory for brunch but it was a 2 hour wait so we decided to come here instead. We only had to wait 30 minutes to be seated which was a lot better than 2 hours. Little did we know, it would take a whole hour for us to get our food. We honestly could've waited the 2 hours for Morning Glory and gotten our food at the same time if not earlier. The restaurant wasn't packed with customers but they were definitely short staffed or something because there were two couples sitting next to us who were also waiting for their food. One couple was ready to leave when their food came out at that exact moment. The servers did apologize and told us that they were having issues with the kitchen. They also offered us all free orange juice. However, if they knew they were having issues with the kitchen then they should've told us earlier before we got seated so people could go elsewhere rather than waiting an hour for their food. Overall, service here was very poor. In terms of food, it was unfortunately pretty good but not worth the wait. I really liked the simple toast with matcha cream on top as well as the curry hamburg. My friend ordered the shakshuka (not pictured because it came last and everyone just wanted to eat at that point) which was also pretty good. For the avocado toast, the toast was too hard so I wouldn't recommend it. We also ordered a yuzu and matcha yuzu mimosa. Both tasted like yuzu. The matcha yuzu one was basically a green yuzu mimosa. We stopped by at Between Us for brunch and it was an alright overall experience. The hit of the meal was the curry Hamburg - basically a Japanese curry loco moco mash up. The sauce was delicious and we mopped this dish up. The duck and waffle was odd - although the duck was cooked well the accompanying syrup included guava which we were initially intrigued with but ultimately disappointed by. The dish would have been better with just straight up plain maple syrup. The beignets were fluffy but I felt that the dip itself was a little lacking. The matcha half had good texture but lacked flavor, and the black sesame half had good flavor but was a little "firm" and difficult to dip. Service was alright. I tried to visit Between Us on a weekend for lunch and the place had a line out the door.  Taking advantage of my no longer being employed I tried 9:30am on Wednesday and there was parking across the street and no line. I tried the duck confit with waffle and breakfast sausage on the side. Waffle had a thin crispy outer layer while the inside was fluffy.  Loved the waffle flavor and the sweetness from the sprinkled on powdered sugar. Duck confit had crispy skin and tender duck.  I did not like the garlic bits but they were easily brushed off.  Duck was delicious.  Tied for my favorite duck confit in town with West End Bar. Side of breakfast sausage had a nice snap to the casing.  Pork was tender and I loved the savory pork flavor.  Better than any grocery store sausage I have tried so far. Complimentary soda water was cold and refreshing. Staff was nice and efficient.  Between Us is a great spot to relax and enjoy a delicious breakfast. 2nd visit I tried a classic burger with fries.  Fries were crispy on the outside and I liked the fried potato flavor.  Beef was tender and I enjoyed the high quality beef they used.  Butter lettuce was fresh and crisp.  I prefer it to iceberg lettuce lots of places use.  Tomato were fresh and juicy.  Bacon was crunchy and had a nice smoky and savory flavor.  Very good burger. Loved the bottle of complimentary soda water. Servers were nice and efficient. read more

Food was awesome! We loved everything from the beignets to the mushroom rice BUT since we didn't have reservations on a Sunday morning we waited almost an hour. That's not the problem, we waited by the front door and can hear everything happening. Three guys walked in with no reservations and were seated within a few minutes by the window. There were also three in my party and by then have been waiting for at least 35 minutes. My question was why weren't we seated first??? Those 3 guys didn't have reservations either, whatever, I didn't want to make a scene so I just let it go. read more

I have been wanting to go to Between Us, and the main reason for that is because of the beignets with matcha and black sesame cream. Of course, when I went this past weekend, they did not have anymore! So I would definitely suggest to arrive before noon on the weekend. Otherwise, one of the workers did tell me it would be easier to get the on a weekday. Enough about beignets. There was no wait when my friend and I went (on a Saturday, where there are no reservations). At first, we were seated at the "bar," then some tables opened up and I asked for us to move. Now for the food that we were able to order! I ordered the iced matcha latte, and it was not too sweet, which was perfect. My friend got the yuzu sparkling drink with mango puree -- I tried it and it was very refreshing for how warm it was! The fried maitake came with a yuzu aioli and it was a 1000/10. The umami flavor was so rich, balanced with the citrus of the aioli and chili crunch for hint of spice. Just writing about it makes me miss it. The shakshuka came with halibut, and I could do without the halibut. Or if the halibut was on the side/on top because the super oily and acidic flavor profile mixed with the fish was not very pleasant. I enjoyed putting the egg on the bread it came with, though. My friend got the cornbread & co, which is cornbread with a piece of fried chicken. This dish is part of the shareable/appetizer section, but it's pretty sizable. She said the chicken was not fully fried and had a lot of fat pieces of skin at the end of the meal. The pancake she got was really delicious though! Shoutout to the Filipino (?) dude working that was wearing an Appa shirt. He had shoulder length hair that was semi-dyed. He was lovely to have conversation with and attentive! read more

Tip - make reservations via google! AND have your party ready with you to get seated. You can also come in for drinks at the counter too to reduce the crowd wait. Very cute spot to catch up with friends for brunch. Love to see the relationship Between Us has made among the community, connecting beloved SD businesses in their quality ingredients. The live music added greatly to our brunch experience as well! Our table ordered 4 matcha drinks (delicious, although one was forgotten at first). Beignets came quickly and the matcha/black sesame cream was light and delicious. Although my husband and I enjoyed the shakshuka and duck/waffle, we would opt to try something new for next time. read more
