Their menu has a paragraph listing their local sources from food to drinks, which I found to be an amazing tidbit to include. The interior is very open air yet cozy. Visiting out of town and my daughter wanted to have beignets before we went back home. Found this spot that was dog friendly. They had limited seating outdoors. Open lighting ambiance and a really cute Japanese inspired brunch spot. Loved the mushroom ochazuke. Loved the Japanese inspired flavors in the brunch. Although it's a little pricey for around 23 dollars per plate the portions are big and you can definitely take it home. The broth for the mushroom ochazuke was umami and rich yet light. I loved the crunch and texture of the tempura crisps on the ochazuke. It was a heart warming meal which didn't make me groggy. It's preferred to have a reservation as there may be a wait. If you want to try the beignets, come early, they run out, they are tasty and I love the yummy dips (matcha and black sesame) it comes with. Asian/American Fusion brunch place is a healthier option than a full American brunch. The place is bright. Drinks are not too sweet, I would have actually liked more sweetness in their matcha & black sesame drinks. All the brunch items are pretty unique and tasty. Been on my to try list for a while, but North Park parking makes it so difficult. Finally came on a Saturday morning about 15minutes after opening the place was already packed. Comes with black sesame mascapone and matcha cream. The black sesame stood out more and it'll be great if we can just pick 1 instead of having both (unless you want to try both). There were many dishes I wanted to try, but ended up ordering duck & waffle. It may look like it's a small portion, but it's filling as duck meat tends to be on the heavier side. The ambiance was fresh and young, it was just a tad hot because it was letting in the heat from the outside. The service was my worst gripe. Upon getting seated, we had a few servers tending to us. The server getting our order was just beyond unwelcoming. It felt more sassy and I felt like I was burdening her by being there. Not once were we smiled to. I work in restaurants and service, so I tend to be lenient and understanding, but our service was just so bad that it was almost unbearable. My friend got the yuzu sparkling drink with mango puree -- I tried it and it was very refreshing for how warm it was! The fried maitake came with a yuzu aioli and it was a 1000/10. The umami flavor was so rich, balanced with the citrus of the aioli and chili crunch for hint of spice. Just writing about it makes me miss it. The shakshuka came with halibut, and I could do without the halibut. Or if the halibut was on the side/on top because the super oily and acidic flavor profile mixed with the fish was not very pleasant. I enjoyed putting the egg on the bread it came with, though. My friend got the cornbread & co, which is cornbread with a piece of fried chicken. This dish is part of the shareable/appetizer section, but it's pretty sizable. This brunch spot is just around the corner from my apartment and I think it's become my new favorite brunch spot. It sits on the corner of 30th and Polk in North Park and has a nice view of the street, which is good for people watching. Love the decor and furniture, like a nice mid century modern look with bright colors to match. I've been a few times now, mainly during the week for brunch as I've seen it quite busy on the weekends. Nice place to catch up with friends or even family/ group as they can accommodate. Staff is always really friendly and attentive, which I appreciate. As for the food, I've ordered the following - latke egg benedict - it was light and fresh, but I will say, the potato latke was a little too crispy and maybe a little too burned for my taste. Otherwise, it was really good and the flavors all complimented each other - side of 2 eggs - I added for extra protein - mushroom rice - a nice add if you are a rice lover and it had a nice light mushroom flavor to it - mushroom toast added poached egg - this is my go to as I live a savory yet fresh brunch. The ricotta spread pairs well with a good portion of mushrooms and fresh herbs and green lightly tossed in a vinegary dressing. Highly recommend! I tried to visit Between Us on a weekend for lunch and the place had a line out the door.  Taking advantage of my no longer being employed I tried 9:30am on Wednesday and there was parking across the street and no line. I tried the duck confit with waffle and breakfast sausage on the side. Waffle had a thin crispy outer layer while the inside was fluffy.  Loved the waffle flavor and the sweetness from the sprinkled on powdered sugar. Duck confit had crispy skin and tender duck.  I did not like the garlic bits but they were easily brushed off.  Duck was delicious.  Tied for my favorite duck confit in town with West End Bar. Side of breakfast sausage had a nice snap to the casing.  Pork was tender and I loved the savory pork flavor.  Better than any grocery store sausage I have tried so far. Complimentary soda water was cold and refreshing. Shakshuka: Catch of the day fish in tomato-chili sauce with Boursin cheese, fennel, eggs, zucchini, and yellow squash, served with house-baked focaccia. SO GOOD! My friend said she gets this everytime and is never dissapointed and I would definitely come back for this! The beignets weren't anything special but the creams were unique and tasted good. -Bacon Scone ($11): also limited quantity and only available on the weekends. I enjoyed the consistency of the scones and the dips. -Cookie Crunch French Toast ($17): the server asked if we wanted the blueberry or banana brûlée. My friend was raving about Between Us (she said it was so good that she and her bf went back twice on the same trip to SD), so I immediately added it to my bookmarks and decided to check it out on our latest trip! After my initial failure to secure beignets, I was on a mission to obtain them when I had errands to run in North Park. Street parking both free and paid was still extremely difficult to find during late weekday afternoon. Because of this, I ordered takeout and brought it home. Beignets - I didn't eat these until 1-2 hours later and they were easily the best beignets I've ever had outside of Louisiana. The dough is dense but airy and has a nice soft chewy texture with a slight crispy exterior. The black sesame and matcha creams were also so good and went well together. Overall not too sweet. I bet they would've even been better hot. Duck and waffle - this dish was okay for us. The waffle wasn't anything special. It was a dense waffle and not really fluffy. Side of fried chicken - this was solid and a good piece of chicken Hot black sesame latte - I was really surprised when I picked it up and it only fills half of the cup. Is this only 4-8oz? It's okay though because the black sesame fell to the bottom an was so thick that when I added more liquid and stirred, the drink was good. It had very strong lovely black sesame flavor. This place was great no wait when I came in on a Tuesday afternoon. Street parking was easy to find. Was seated right away. Place was clean and had windows that opened up onto the street which is perfect for a sunny day. Ordered the beignets, a hojicha, and the curry hamburg. The beignets were small, pillowy, soft and came with matcha and sesame sauces to dip in. Hamburg steak was delicious and filling not overwhelming or too salty. The burger was good it felt like i was eating a curry loco moco. Ask them for what seems to be homemade hot sauce to jazz it up it was delicious and gave it a kick. Will def be back! read more

Between Us is the epitome of brunch. Great service, great vibes, nice brunch food. I give it a high rating for the overall package. They decorated for the holidays in December so gave a nice festive experience. It's downtown so of course parking is not easy, but I was able to find street parking around 10:30am after circling a couple times. I made a reservation about a week before for the weekend, and we were seated right away. Fried Maitake - 8/10 This was my favorite dish and would go back to eat this! Matcha Tiramisu - 7/10 I just had to try the matcha tiramisu. Normally I like just straight matcha but I had to try this fun sweet drink, and I enjoyed dipping the lady finger in the drink. For a sweet drink, this matcha was also not sweet!! Just the way I like it!! Shokupan Toast - 7/10 It's hard to find good shokupan toast outside of Japan, and Between Us actually used decent shokupan toast! You can tell by the sweet taste and the texture. Duck and waffle - 6/10 I ordered the duck and waffle because I normally love chicken and waffles so of course I have to try this. It was not for me because I did not like the sauce that they provided and would have preferred a regular sweet sauce like maple syrup for the waffle. The duck was a bit dry in my opinion. Beignets - 7/10 A good standard beignet Steak and Eggs - 6/10 The steak was alright but the dish as a whole was the perfect breakfast plate. So glad I got to try this place finally! Came on a Saturday around 11am with a party of 3 and got seated fairly quickly. Ordered the salted maple matcha latte for a drink- I would not recommend the matcha here, it was $9 for a really small glass with mostly ice and milk. It didn't taste that great unfortunately :( BUT their saving grace is the food- the Latke Egg Benedict was amazing, loved that it had a lemon/sour flavor to it, all the flavors went together really nicely. I also loved that it was on a bed of really crispy potatoes instead of bread. Also had to get the beignets and those were amazing especially with the black sesame dip. Service was also really friendly here and I love the vibe inside. Parking sucks because it's in north park, but ambiance of the place is super cute. Super adorable brunch spot near Saigon Coffee! All their drinks were so cute and there's a lot of natural light. Staff was super friendly and food came out pretty quick even on peak weekend times! Parking can be difficult. It's worth coming with a reservation and plans to stop by other cafes or small stores in the area. I loved the beignets but I wish they came with more sauce and it was easier to share. Most dishes were super flavorful! The duck waffle was okay, I would skip it next time. The mushroom chazuke, beet & burrata salad, and latke benedicts were great and fun to share. read more

A hidden gem for amazing Asian fusion brunch in San Diego!! We went for a girls lunch and had a fantastic time! Everything was so delicious, we ordered the Curry Hamburg, Duck and Waffle, and Steak and Eggs. The curry was piping hot with a slight kick, excellent pairing with the tornado egg and rice. The steak and eggs came with some AMAZINGLY fried crispy potatoes and the steak was perfectly medium rare with a garlic dressing. There was so much talk around this brunch spot, and I saw so many social media posts around it that I felt like I had to try Between Us out! - PARKING - Street parking only, and it can be pretty difficult to find a nearby spot if you're dining at peak brunch hours! - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - Looked like you could make reservations ahead of time, which I would definitely recommend if you're eating on the weekend. Otherwise you can wait in the walk-in line and put your name down, which is what we did. We went on a Sunday around 11:30am and waited about 30-40 minutes. The first half of the restaurant is fairly bright, but we got seated in the back area where it was very backlit depending on where you sat. Staff is pretty attentive, they kept checking in on us throughout our meal. - FOOD - Beignets ($12): Limited quantity so we ordered them immediately! This was one of my main reasons why I wanted to come to Between Us! The beignets were soft and pillow-y, and I loved the Matcha cream and Black Sesame Mascarpone! Would definitely get these again. Bacon Scone ($11): These were also limited, and only available on the weekends. You get 2 in each order, and although I did enjoy it, I don't feel the same urge to reorder like I do with the beignets. Duck & Waffle ($24): The duck was very well cooked - super crispy skin, juicy meat! My review is only about the café -- I haven't had a chance to try brunch yet. I love that you can walk right up to the front counter to order drinks to go. I got an iced matcha latte and was in heaven. They use really good, traditional, high‑quality matcha -- rich green color, smooth, and just genuinely delicious. The owners of the Thai eatery across the street at this North Park intersection on 30th St have opened a farm-to-table gastropub that has replaced a longtime local brewing company. Between Us made its debut earlier this summer, and judging by the long wait during my recent weekend visit, the buzz and interest in this place remain strong. I don't know if this happens frequently, but there was a flower kiosk set up on the corner in front of the structure. It obscured the hostess stand and didn't do anything except create congestion. I was fortunate that a space opened up at the bar fairly quickly after my name was added to the waitlist. The tap system from the previous business was retained so that a nice variety of brews was available. I ordered a Yuzu-Ade for a beverage. It was yuzu juice mixed with still or sparkling water. I chose the former with light ice. The drink tasted like a light lemonade. The food menu had typical brunch offerings but also some Asian-influenced items like the US Fried Rice. My pick was the Curry Hamburg which seemed to be popular based on how many times I saw waitstaff bring it out from the kitchen. A house-made beef patty was served with Japanese brown curry, tornado eggs, mushroom rice, and a dollop of whipped ricotta with chives on top. The curry was mildly spicy, but the entire dish was very hearty and satisfying. I could have used more rice to sop up the curry, however that's nitpicking. The service was okay as the bartender came by periodically to check how I was doing. I am not sure I would wait an hour in line for a seat as there are plenty of brunch spots in this neighborhood.
