My friend and I ordered the Mushroom Chazuke, beignets with black sesame and matcha dips, and French toast. Tasty and well-presented. It's a great brunch spot with a nice atmosphere--perfect for catching up with friends.

Between Us has been on my list for the longest time. After finally trying it, my only regret is not coming sooner because everything we ordered was delicious. We walked in around 12:40 without a reservation. They close at 2:30, but we were still seated pretty quickly. Every employee we interacted with was genuinely friendly. The service never felt rushed even though we came close to close. I also had no idea we walked in during their "US Hour" from 12:00 to 2:30, so that ended up being a nice surprise. They offer $7 draft beers, $9 wine, $10 mimosas, plus a handful of bites for $9. We started with the Fried Calamari Tentacles from the US Hour menu. They're served with Japanese mayo, although it tasted like there was some citrus mixed in because it had a nice tangy kick. Whatever it was, it worked really well with the crispy calamari. To drink, I ordered the Yuzu Matcha Mimosa. It had a really vibrant green color that almost reminded me of green juice. I actually enjoyed it. The matcha flavor came through without getting lost. My friend wasn't the biggest fan because they thought it leaned a little too bitter, so I think this one depends on how much you already enjoy matcha. For my entree, I ordered the Duck and Waffles ($24), which comes with crispy duck confit, a waffle, passionfruit guava sauce, and chili crunch. This was easily the highlight of the meal. The duck was cooked perfectly. It was crispy on the outside, tender inside, and seasoned just enough to let the meat shine. I also appreciated that the chili crunch actually had some heat instead of just being there for texture. The waffle was light and fluffy. I'm a sucker for sweet and savory combinations, so the powdered sugar paired with the rich duck was enough to win me over. The passionfruit guava sauce was the only part I wasn't completely sold on. It wasn't bad by any means. I just think it's one of those flavors that comes down to personal preference. This ended up being one of those meals that reminded me why I keep a running list of places I want to try. Great food. Great service. A fun happy hour that I accidentally stumbled into. My only wish is that parking in North Park was a little easier, but that's just part of the neighborhood. I'd definitely come back.

Loved it! I grabbed a seat near the window so I could people watch and order the breakfast with the eggs and bacon and potatoes. The potatoes were so good like literally the perfect crispiness and everything. I think I'm coming back just for those. And maybe the beignets as the people next to me ordered them and they looked delicious. I took off a star because the toast was not hot enough to melt the butter. And if you love buttered toast, then you know what I mean.

A must-visit if you're in San Diego! We saw this place recommended on TikTok for brunch and decided to give it a try. We ordered the beignets, Matcha Latte Tiramisu, Curry Hamburger, and the U.S. Fried Rice. Everything we ordered was delicious, but the standout was definitely the beignets! We loved that they were made fresh to order, and the matcha and sesame dipping sauces made them even better. Our server was very friendly and checked in on us throughout our meal to make sure we had everything we needed. Thank you for the great service! The restaurant also has plenty of tables, making it a great spot for both small and larger groups. We'll definitely be back the next time we're in San Diego for brunch! P.S. We came on a Monday around 1 p.m.

A new brunch spot located in NP run by the young new owners of Thai Time across the street. "Between Us" is aptly named with some fusion, "in-between" offerings ranging from Curry Hamburg (Japanese), ube dips (Filipino), Duck Waffles (Chinese fusion), Latke Benedict (Jewish fusion), Beignets (Cajun) and Shakshuka (North African). We had the Beignets (5 for $12) to share, and I ordered the Curry Hamburg ($20), a Black Sesame Latte ($7) w/ a shot of Matcha (+$2), and a Matcha Yuzu Mimosa ($13) for myself. The beignets, perfectly shared between the 5 of us, were a bit too dense and possessed a weirdly hard outer crust. The matcha cream and black sesame mascarpone serving as dips made them a little more enjoyable. The black sesame latte was deliciously nutty, but the matcha shot at the $2 up charge was exorbitant. (Note: This is their only caffeine addition -- along with hojicha -- as they do not have an espresso machine). I was very disappointed in the Curry Hamburg, unfortunately. This was a failed attempt at omurice. The egg, while plentiful, was not even seasoned. Further, the equally unseasoned hamburger patty was very dry and the sauce over-salty. They should have distributed the salt and seasoning throughout the dish because it lacked serious balance. They just added beer and mimosas, so the Matcha Yuzu Mimosa, though overkill with the Matcha (and likely wasted), did ease the ache some. I made reservations online via OpenTable where I had to put a credit card down and agree to the seemingly shady policy regarding party changes within a 24 hour period. We were seated immediately, but they gave us a table with some weird wooden fold-up chairs. Our table was strangely the only one with these uncomfortable chairs. It was also excessively loud and we almost didn't learn the name of our server, who, by the way, was PHENOMENAL despite some of the disappointment with the food! Thank you (Mick) Jagger for taking care of us and getting our food out to us so quickly!

I've had Between Us on bookmarked ever since it opened! This brunch spot in North Park serves up a menu of fusion brunch options with Japanese and Filipino influences. I was nervous about coming without a reservation, but my husband and I arrived early and were able to grab a spot at the bar no problem. We started with the beignets that can either be served sweet or savory. We opted for the sweet which came with a sesame and matcha dipping paste. They were fresh and clearly made to order! They were a great start! For entrees, I got the Japanese curry and my husband got the duck and waffle. The curry was so good! I loved the whipped egg on top. It was so light and fluffy. The portion was huge and I was able to take about half of it home for a second meal. I was full from the delicious brunch, but still ordered a matcha to go. It was the only thing that I thought wasn't so great. I didn't love the matcha and the strawberry puree was a little too chunky for my liking. Everything else was great though! Prices here are pretty steep, but the food does taste good!

The beignets came out piping hot and fresh! The dips were good. The black sesame flavor was much more pronounced than the matcha. I honestly couldn't really taste the matcha much. I kept thinking a lemon or strawberry element would brighten it up nicely, and even a little salt could have made the flavors pop more. I feel like the texture of the dip should have leaned a bit more foamy for easier dipping. Duck Confit The duck was incredibly tender with crispy skin. I also loved the chili oil and felt it added such a nice kick. The passion fruit sauce was interesting and creative, but a bit too strong for my taste and overpowered the dish a little. I actually think a simple maple syrup would've worked better here. The waffle itself was decent, though I wish it had been crispier and had a bit more flavor on its own. Curry Hamburger The egg was light and nicely cooked. The curry leaned pretty salty, but it was smooth and flavorful. I really enjoyed the rice - it had a smoky, earthy flavor from the mushrooms that added a lot of depth. The hamburger patty helped balance out the saltiness well

came in on sunday, it gets busy so I recommend booking reservation. I really enjoyed eating the curry hamburg, it's like a mix between loco mocco and curry and omu rice. the steak & eggs was good with the chimichurri sauce. I would pass on matcha latte but pretty for the picture. beignets were good but if you're sitting at the table tops by the entrance beware because the wind will make the sugar go all over you. I honestly don't know if the staff noticed but the sugar kept going all over us and we had to keep wiping it off our clothes. Just a tip I would not recommend sitting at the table tops unless the window is closed. we asked if it could be closed and one staff said yes but our server said no since she had to climb up and close it.. mix feelings from my groups overall experience because we saw that they closed it only after we left. overall food is good, id come back if i have a reservation. maybe I will have better experience sitting in the dinning area away from open window so my food doesn't go all over me again LOL

    Vivien L.

Matcha latte tiramisu: skip this, doesn't taste like matcha at all...just sugary green liquid Beignets: they're fine. I personally enjoyed the matcha cream more than black sesame but wouldn't order again Steak and eggs: really loved how the steak was cooked and the favorite part of my dish Friends liked their order too

    Victoria H.

I think about these beignets all the time! They're so delicious, and I absolutely loved the matcha and black sesame dipping sauces. The beignets are perfectly fluffy and pair so well with both dips. This is such a great spot for breakfast or brunch and the perfect place to catch up with friends. The service is always friendly, which makes the experience even better! #like #comment #livelaughlovelife :)

I really enjoyed my visit to Between Us. First off, the restaurant has a cool vibe and atmosphere. I appreciate the interior and furniture in the restaurant - the small details were nice. Plates were huge, so I'm glad we chose to do family style and try everything out together. Our server was really kind as well, so we'll be back.

New favorite brunch spot in town!!!! do yourself a favor and make a reservation. If you're able to plan ahead, there's definitely availability. My friend has said that she's waited an hour plus for a table as a walk in. I could understand why it came so highly recommended from a friend. The butterscotch matcha was to die for. It wasn't overly sweet and the Matcha was so smooth. Portions here are very generous. The beignets were good, but I probably didn't need them after getting our entrées. I got the curry hamburg which was basically an elevated loco moco. The curry was rich and had a little kick to it. My husband got the fried rice, which was solid with the fried chicken on the side. The kids loved the eggs and sausage. The French toast was a bit too crispy on the edges for them but overall they enjoyed everything also. There's lots more for me to try on the menu. Can't wait to come back! The only downside about this place is the parking!

I asked, "What if we want to order more beer or sake later?" because whenever we come here, we usually order three or four sakes and three or four beers throughout the meal. His response was simply, "It's just the two of us." I understand that they were short-staffed, but that's not an excuse to make customers feel rushed and unwelcome. Honestly, the way he spoke to me and looked at me genuinely scared me. After we sat down, I turned to my friend and said, "I'm scared of him." I rushed through the menu and ordered the first thing I saw because I just wanted to get away from the counter. I've been here before, and I loved the food. In fact, that's exactly why we came back. But this time, because of the atmosphere and the way I was treated, I couldn't enjoy the meal at all. The same food I had loved before tasted awful to me because the experience completely ruined it. No one checked on us afterward. We had to get our own napkins and anything else we needed. I worked in the restaurant industry for 16 years, so I understand how stressful and difficult the job can be. I've dealt with all kinds of difficult customers, but I still treated people with kindness and respect. I really do love this restaurant, which is exactly why this experience was so upsetting. I sincerely hope this was just a one-time experience and that it never happens again. I would love to come back and enjoy the food the way I always did before

It was a balance of sweet and savory, with hints of rice flour and coconut milk -- but even ordering it less sweet, it still came out too sweet for me. The pastries were also just OK. My favorite of the bunch was the ensaymada.
