We didn't have a reservation, so we completely understood that there would be a wait and never complained about it. However, the hostess came across as very rude and unwelcoming, which really took away from what could have been another great experience. We really enjoyed the food and our server was wonderful, so it's disappointing that the interaction with the hostess left such a negative impression. There's a lot of hype around this place and I don't really know why after eating here. Our server was rude and the food tastes forever to come out. Another problem I have is that the menu literally says, "Substitutions or modifications are politely declined!" That is insane that they won't make accommodations for people. What if they have allergies? Let people enjoy the food how they want/like to. It's not your call. We started with the Beignets. These were very dry and tasted old. They serve the black sesame mascarpone and matcha cream in one dish, which stinks because the matcha cream is not good. I got the Duck & Waffle. The duck was easily the best thing here that we had and the passionfruit guava sauce (made in-house) was light and lovely. Unfortunately, my waffle came out cold and when I told my server, she said, with no emotion, "I'm sorry about that." Then, turned around and LEFT. They didn't fix my dish at all. It was insanely rude. My guy got the Latke Egg Benedict, which stunk of fish and tasted like old fish. We had to send it back for them to remake and it came out better the second time. Between Us is such a cute and trendy brunch spot in San Diego. We stopped by on a Saturday morning with our 2-year-old and didn't have reservations. Luckily, they were able to seat us at the large communal table near the entrance, which was totally fine. The place had a really fun, youthful vibe and was pretty busy with lots of younger groups. Since we had our toddler with us, we kept things pretty simple and shared the Two Eggs Your Way Breakfast and the Cornbread & Co, along with a Tiramisu Matcha Latte. I was really excited about the matcha since I saw quite a few people ordering it, but unfortunately it was probably my least favorite thing. The matcha flavor wasn't very strong and the drink tasted a little watery to me. The food was much better. Even though the breakfast was pretty basic, it was really good for sharing with a toddler. The toast with butter and jam and the crispy potatoes were definitely the stars. The fried chicken that came with the cornbread was also really tasty. Service was a little slow. It took about 15 minutes for our server to come by and take our drink and food order, and the food took a bit to come out after that. So I wouldn't necessarily come here if you're looking for a quick breakfast spot. It's definitely more of a sit-down, take-your-time kind of spot. I just couldn't justify the price for what you actually get, and honestly felt like it was a waste of money. I also tried the Brûléed French Toast with Poached Pears and Cream Cheese. Unfortunately, a lot of the top was pretty burnt and tasted bitter. I'm not sure if that's intentional with the brûléed style, but the brunt parts were too bitter for my taste. Overall, it wasn't the best French toast I've had, and for $20 for just one slice, it was overpriced. For drinks, I had the Butterscotch Matcha Latte, which was okay but nothing memorable. My friend got the Yuzu-Ade with sparkling water and said it tasted pretty flat and wasn't sparkling enough. TLDR: terrible host We were told they needed to clean a table for our party of 2, so we waited a bit before being seated. As we walked to our table, I noticed there were plenty of open 2 tops, but the host with silver/purple hair sat us right next to a group of 5. It felt cramped, and the group was talking so loudly that I could barely hear myself think. We asked the host if we could move to one of the open tables for more space but it seemed like such a big deal, he had a terrible attitude. He said that a party was going to be sat at the one he was setting up... but the others remained open?? They ended up seating the incoming party at a completely different table. By the end of our meal, the tables we asked about were still unoccupied. What made it even more frustrating was watching another party of 2 come in and get the option of choosing any of the open tables, which was never offered to us. We ordered the beignets, duck & waffle, latke egg benedict, yuzuade, and matcha latte tiramisu. They were out of the latke, so they substituted it with a waffle. The yuzu hollandaise was extremely sour and tasted off, almost like it had gone bad, and the texture was really mushy. The matcha latte tiramisu was also such a letdown. It tasted like water even after I mixed in the foam, so I asked our server to take it off the bill. We ended up spending $76 for food that was just okay and service that was pretty disappointing. It definitely is on the low sweet. The mimosa was good as well. At first, wasn't sure if the flavor would pair well as a mimosa, but it was good! The matcha and yuzu blend well. We walked in around 12:40 without a reservation. They close at 2:30, but we were still seated pretty quickly. Every employee we interacted with was genuinely friendly. They're served with Japanese mayo, although it tasted like there was some citrus mixed in because it had a nice tangy kick. Whatever it was, it worked really well with the crispy calamari. To drink, I ordered the Yuzu Matcha Mimosa. It had a really vibrant green color that almost reminded me of green juice. I actually enjoyed it. The matcha flavor came through without getting lost. My friend wasn't the biggest fan because they thought it leaned a little too bitter, so I think this one depends on how much you already enjoy matcha. For my entree, I ordered the Duck and Waffles ($24), which comes with crispy duck confit, a waffle, passionfruit guava sauce, and chili crunch. This was easily the highlight of the meal. First time here. Made a reservation 1 day prior for brunch. Labor Day weekend, so busier than usual I'm sure... expected that. Parking is street parking, and finding one right by the restaurant is challenging, so arrive early as they have a grace period of 10-15min, I believe. We ended up parking on the street by the Vons plaza, which was a 3min walk to the restaurant (not bad). Be mindful of street cleaning days/times though (they have signage posted). We requested a high chair for our infant, and was told they will need to check since they had many babies at the restaurant, so needed ti ensure a high chair was available. Didn't take too long, and they set up a high chair for us and provided child plate and utensils. So we booked for 6, as 1 is an infant (11mo), and were charged by default a 20% large party fee... 20% is a lot, when most restaurants typically charge 18%. But what I didn't understand was the 6th person in our group was an 11mo baby! Most restaurants book for 6, but do not charge a large party fee of 6 or more since 1 person is an infant. Thought that was interesting. Would've tipped 18% anyway per usual... Restaurant has a good number of tables inside. A bit warm inside, despite the fans going. No A/C I think... but was manageable. Pretty clean overall. Service was great also. Staff were friendly and welcoming. The beignets, drinks, and corn and chicken co appetizer came out pretty quickly after our orders were placed. But after that, it took awhile for our other entreés to be served, like 45min+. It wasn't just us though. Other tables were waiting also. Our server was kind enough to provide us updates saying our food will be out soon, and sorry for the delay. They are very busy, so it was taking longer for meals to get served. I thought that was nice of our server to keep us posted and acknowledge that they were taking a long time. Some places don't, so I thought that was very nice of him to do so. A new brunch spot located in NP run by the young new owners of Thai Time across the street. "Between Us" is aptly named with some fusion, "in-between" offerings ranging from Curry Hamburg (Japanese), ube dips (Filipino), Duck Waffles (Chinese fusion), Latke Benedict (Jewish fusion), Beignets (Cajun) and Shakshuka (North African). We had the Beignets (5 for $12) to share, and I ordered the Curry Hamburg ($20), a Black Sesame Latte ($7) w/ a shot of Matcha (+$2), and a Matcha Yuzu Mimosa ($13) for myself. The beignets, perfectly shared between the 5 of us, were a bit too dense and possessed a weirdly hard outer crust. The matcha cream and black sesame mascarpone serving as dips made them a little more enjoyable. The black sesame latte was deliciously nutty, but the matcha shot at the $2 up charge was exorbitant. (Note: This is their only caffeine addition -- along with hojicha -- as they do not have an espresso machine). I was very disappointed in the Curry Hamburg, unfortunately. This was a failed attempt at omurice. The egg, while plentiful, was not even seasoned. Further, the equally unseasoned hamburger patty was very dry and the sauce over-salty. They should have distributed the salt and seasoning throughout the dish because it lacked serious balance. They just added beer and mimosas, so the Matcha Yuzu Mimosa, though overkill with the Matcha (and likely wasted), did ease the ache some. I made reservations online via OpenTable where I had to put a credit card down and agree to the seemingly shady policy regarding party changes within a 24 hour period. We were seated immediately, but they gave us a table with some weird wooden fold-up chairs. Our table was strangely the only one with these uncomfortable chairs. It was also excessively loud and we almost didn't learn the name of our server, who, by the way, was PHENOMENAL despite some of the disappointment with the food! They get really busy on weekends. My favorite things to get here are the beef sando and curry hamburg! They are sooo flavorful. A lot of people I bring love the duck and waffles. They say that the sauce pairs perfectly with the duck. The matcha latte here isn't that good, there are plenty of other coffee/matcha spots that are nearby that would be better to go to. Was looking for a new brunch spot to try and came across Between Us. Didn't have a reservation and walked up to the host stand and was quoted a 2 hour wait. My group decided to wait it out and walk around the area. The wait ended up actually being only a little over an hour. Got seated towards the back of the restaurant. Tables were felt very cramped and there was not much ventilation/AC running. I was sweating the entire time there. Food took a while to come out but was expected since the restaurant was packed. My group ordered the beignets which were hot and fresh. The sesame and matcha cream were a nice touch. I ordered the mushroom chazuke which was very filling but light tasting. New favorite brunch spot in town!!!! do yourself a favor and make a reservation. If you're able to plan ahead, there's definitely availability. My friend has said that she's waited an hour plus for a table as a walk in. I could understand why it came so highly recommended from a friend. The butterscotch matcha was to die for. It wasn't overly sweet and the Matcha was so smooth. Portions here are very generous. The beignets were good, but I probably didn't need them after getting our entrées. I got the curry hamburg which was basically an elevated loco moco. The curry was rich and had a little kick to it. My husband got the fried rice, which was solid with the fried chicken on the side. The kids loved the eggs and sausage. The French toast was a bit too crispy on the edges for them but overall they enjoyed everything also. There's lots more for me to try on the menu. The matcha beignets were warm, fluffy, and had the perfect amount of matcha flavor without being overly sweet. Definitely a fun twist on traditional beignets! The Benedict with latke was my favorite, the latke was crispy on the outside and paired perfectly with the eggs and creamy hollandaise. We dropped by as a party of two on an early Saturday morning and were seated promptly at the bar. Their menu has a paragraph listing their local sources from food to drinks, which I found to be an amazing tidbit to include. The interior is very open air yet cozy. We ordered the sweet beignets with black sesame and matcha cream dip, shakshuka, and curry hamburg and had leftovers to spare! They offer beignets that were deliciously soft and perfect with their matcha/sesame dip. The shakshuka is not as thick as the traditional dish, more like a tomato soup with their catch of the day. The bread crust was perfectly crunchy and a soft, doughy inside. The curry hamburg was amazing! The rice made a perfect pairing with the sauce and the egg was soft and pillowy! Outside, Colibrí had a flower cart with plenty of shade. Between Us was the first restaurant to collaborate with this immigrant-focused local company! Such a hidden gem in north park. Delicious menu of brunch items! First the staff are so welcoming! From the moment you walk in, to when you are seated. I must give props! Visiting out of town and my daughter wanted to have beignets before we went back home. Found this spot that was dog friendly. They had limited seating outdoors. Next time I'll prefer to sit at the counter. Service was great as our server made my daughter feel special for her birthday. A lot of unique items on the menu. I went with their special latke Benedict which was delicious as enjoyed having potatoes instead of bread as the base. Notty was an absolute gem. Very friendly and accomodating! Food was delicious! Highly recommend the beignet, they are delish! Get then in the morning while you can!
