I've had Between Us on bookmarked ever since it opened! This brunch spot in North Park serves up a menu of fusion brunch options with Japanese and Filipino influences. I was nervous about coming without a reservation, but my husband and I arrived early and were able to grab a spot at the bar no problem. We started with the beignets that can either be served sweet or savory. We opted for the sweet which came with a sesame and matcha dipping paste. They were fresh and clearly made to order! They were a great start! For entrees, I got the Japanese curry and my husband got the duck and waffle. The curry was so good! I loved the whipped egg on top. It was so light and fluffy. The portion was huge and I was able to take about half of it home for a second meal. I was full from the delicious brunch, but still ordered a matcha to go. It was the only thing that I thought wasn't so great. I didn't love the matcha and the strawberry puree was a little too chunky for my liking. Everything else was great though! Food was delicious - they have unique Asian fusion items like even yuzu hollandaise for the late dish. Service on the other hand was one of the worst / most inattentive I've experienced. Got there for reservations at 10:47 on a Saturday. I immediately put in an order for beignets since I knew they might take a while. They came out around 11:15. I hadn't been asked by anyone since I walked in about anything else, so eventually I had to flag down someone at 11:30 to put in a food order... 45 minutes of no one really looking our way to take an order or ask about drinks. I ordered 2 dishes that then probably took another 30 minutes before they came out. My husband joined us at some point, having brought food from another place at which point a waiter told us he can't eat outside food in the restaurant, which usually I wouldn't mind, but that was literally the only major interaction we had with our waiter aside from being seated and bringing out the beignets and it had been over an hour long wait to get food by then... All in all, food is great, but wait time / service was extremely disappointing. Order take-out unless you have a super free schedule to potentially wait an hour for food. read more

I really enjoyed eating the curry hamburg, it's like a mix between loco mocco and curry and omu rice. the steak & eggs was good with the chimichurri sauce. I would pass on matcha latte but pretty for the picture. beignets were good but if you're sitting at the table tops by the entrance beware because the wind will make the sugar go all over you. I honestly don't know if the staff noticed but the sugar kept going all over us and we had to keep wiping it off our clothes. Just a tip I would not recommend sitting at the table tops unless the window is closed. we asked if it could be closed and one staff said yes but our server said no since she had to climb up and close it.. mix feelings from my groups overall experience because we saw that they closed it only after we left. overall food is good, id come back if i have a reservation. maybe I will have better experience sitting in the dinning area away from open window so my food doesn't go all over me again LOL read more

I came her for brunch with a friend a few days ago, and we were feeling adventurous! While we usually opt for the sweet beignets, we instead went for the savory ones! New favorite brunch spot in town!!!! do yourself a favor and make a reservation. If you're able to plan ahead, there's definitely availability. My friend has said that she's waited an hour plus for a table as a walk in. I could understand why it came so highly recommended from a friend. The butterscotch matcha was to die for. It wasn't overly sweet and the Matcha was so smooth. Portions here are very generous. The beignets were good, but I probably didn't need them after getting our entrées. I got the curry hamburg which was basically an elevated loco moco. The curry was rich and had a little kick to it. My husband got the fried rice, which was solid with the fried chicken on the side. The kids loved the eggs and sausage. The French toast was a bit too crispy on the edges for them but overall they enjoyed everything also. There's lots more for me to try on the menu. Visiting out of town and my daughter wanted to have beignets before we went back home. Found this spot that was dog friendly. They had limited seating outdoors. Next time I'll prefer to sit at the counter. Service was great as our server made my daughter feel special for her birthday. A lot of unique items on the menu. Their menu has a paragraph listing their local sources from food to drinks, which I found to be an amazing tidbit to include. The interior is very open air yet cozy. We ordered the sweet beignets with black sesame and matcha cream dip, shakshuka, and curry hamburg and had leftovers to spare! They offer beignets that were deliciously soft and perfect with their matcha/sesame dip. The shakshuka is not as thick as the traditional dish, more like a tomato soup with their catch of the day. The bread crust was perfectly crunchy and a soft, doughy inside. The curry hamburg was amazing! The rice made a perfect pairing with the sauce and the egg was soft and pillowy! Food was awesome! We loved everything from the beignets to the mushroom rice BUT since we didn't have reservations on a Sunday morning we waited almost an hour. That's not the problem, we waited by the front door and can hear everything happening. Three guys walked in with no reservations and were seated within a few minutes by the window. Open lighting ambiance and a really cute Japanese inspired brunch spot. Loved the mushroom ochazuke. Loved the Japanese inspired flavors in the brunch. Although it's a little pricey for around 23 dollars per plate the portions are big and you can definitely take it home. The broth for the mushroom ochazuke was umami and rich yet light. I loved the crunch and texture of the tempura crisps on the ochazuke. It was a heart warming meal which didn't make me groggy. In north park, you'll find street parking, and many eateries nearby. There's typically always street parking near Vons, you just have to walk a few blocks. It's preferred to have a reservation as there may be a wait. If you want to try the beignets, come early, they run out, they are tasty and I love the yummy dips (matcha and black sesame) it comes with. Asian/American Fusion brunch place is a healthier option than a full American brunch. The place is bright. Drinks are not too sweet, I would have actually liked more sweetness in their matcha & black sesame drinks. All the brunch items are pretty unique and tasty. I've had Between Us on my Yelp to-try list for YEARS but the parking situation in North Park always scared me. Recently, when a friend was in town, I finally committed to trying this brunch spot with them! We made plans last minute so were unfortunately unable to make reservations. We came around 11am on a Friday and there was no line when I joined, though a queue formed right behind me. I got there before my friends (rare North Park parking luck) and the friendly staff allowed me to claim a table and wait for them. The shop is gorgeous with lots of wooden elements and big, open air windows. The overall vibe is clean and airy, and there are cute flower decorations on each table. Service was friendly and while they aren't beating any speed records, food came out in a reasonable timeframe. My thoughts below: Mango matcha latte: This was smaller than I expected. It costs $1 extra for the seasonal fruit puree and they really give you your money's worth when you get it. Before I gave the drink a good stir, I was worried that the fruit would overpower the matcha as the drink looked rather pale. However, as I stirred, the milkiness bloomed into one of the most richly green matchas I've seen in a while!! Each sip is rich with not-too-sweet Mango puree, tempered by the earthiness of the matcha. Wow, what an excellent matcha latte! Beignets: These sell out so I was very relieved when our server said they were still available. They have a sweet and a savory version, and we opted for the sweet. It comes with 5 beignets and black sesame + matcha cream spreads. The beignets were lighter and fluffier than donuts with a slightly yeastier taste. The outside had structure while the inside was super soft. Perhaps I overhyped them in my head but by no means were they bad. I really loved how flavorful both cream spreads were, and they were necessary for proper enjoyment of these fried treats. Duck and waffle: This was a crispy duck leg served atop a waffle with a guava sauce on the side, likely a riff on the popular citrus/berry pairings of French cooking tradition, in the shape of the classic southern fried chicken and waffles. The duck was perfectly tender and the skin was well-seasoned, and the waffle was crispy. The guava sauce was divisive with my table but I liked it! The floral funk of guava brightened up the richer, earthy duck and the waffle benefited from the presence of both flavors. Mushroom Chazuke: Mushrooms and rice served with a light, bonito-based broth and various garnishes and crispies on top. This was incredibly flavorful from the variety of mushrooms and the fish broth. The mushrooms were perfectly crisped and the rice had a nice chew. Flavorful yet soothing interlude from the more adventurous or bold flavors of the rest of our dishes. Shakshuka with fish: This was the undisputed hit with my party. The fish was a flaky white fish, cooked perfectly fork-tender. The dish hit the perfect balance of salt, sugar, and acid with a dash of flavorful fats from the Boursin cheese swirled in. Pop a soft spoonful atop the crispy bread it comes with, and the taste and feel in your mouth are just indescribably good in the way that excellent dishes are. We scraped this dish CLEAN with a quickness. Genuinely one of the best breakfast dishes I have ever tried, and I will definitely be experimenting with adding fish to my shakshuka at home now. While Between Us is on the pricier side and their portion sizes aren't crazy, they are definitely priced in the brunch range. Smaller plates just means more stomach space to try more of their amazing menu! It was frankly agonizing trying to decide what to order, and there are probably two meals worth of dishes left off our table. Been on my to try list for a while, but North Park parking makes it so difficult. Finally came on a Saturday morning about 15minutes after opening the place was already packed. There were just 2 tables left outside and got seated. The beignets are limited quantity per day and they have 2 kinds (sweet or savory). Of course had to go with the sweet! Comes with black sesame mascapone and matcha cream. The black sesame stood out more and it'll be great if we can just pick 1 instead of having both (unless you want to try both). There were many dishes I wanted to try, but ended up ordering duck & waffle. It may look like it's a small portion, but it's filling as duck meat tends to be on the heavier side. Waffle tasted average, but the duck is the star of the dish. How is it SO tender? The skin was crispy too! I was not a fan of the black sesame latte. Of course, when I went this past weekend, they did not have anymore! So I would definitely suggest to arrive before noon on the weekend. There was no wait when my friend and I went (on a Saturday, where there are no reservations). At first, we were seated at the "bar," then some tables opened up and I asked for us to move. Now for the food that we were able to order! I ordered the iced matcha latte, and it was not too sweet, which was perfect. My friend got the yuzu sparkling drink with mango puree -- I tried it and it was very refreshing for how warm it was! The fried maitake came with a yuzu aioli and it was a 1000/10. The umami flavor was so rich, balanced with the citrus of the aioli and chili crunch for hint of spice. Just writing about it makes me miss it. The shakshuka came with halibut, and I could do without the halibut. Or if the halibut was on the side/on top because the super oily and acidic flavor profile mixed with the fish was not very pleasant. I enjoyed putting the egg on the bread it came with, though. My friend got the cornbread & co, which is cornbread with a piece of fried chicken. This dish is part of the shareable/appetizer section, but it's pretty sizable. She said the chicken was not fully fried and had a lot of fat pieces of skin at the end of the meal. The pancake she got was really delicious though! The U.S. Fried Rice was bland. The rice was flavored with tomato (I believe), and the tornado egg was nice and soft. I chicken was flavorless though. I had to constantly reach for the sausage and bacon for some flavor. The beignets were great! They were pillowy and bouncy, paired with matcha and oreo(?) custard. The ambiance was fresh and young, it was just a tad hot because it was letting in the heat from the outside. The service was my worst gripe. Upon getting seated, we had a few servers tending to us. The server getting our order was just beyond unwelcoming. It felt more sassy and I felt like I was burdening her by being there. Not once were we smiled to. I work in restaurants and service, so I tend to be lenient and understanding, but our service was just so bad that it was almost unbearable. I saw her also ignore customers coming to pick up orders as well. Other servers were all good, and even problem solved an issue we had with our food. I'm disappointed. I tried to visit Between Us on a weekend for lunch and the place had a line out the door.  Taking advantage of my no longer being employed I tried 9:30am on Wednesday and there was parking across the street and no line. I tried the duck confit with waffle and breakfast sausage on the side. Waffle had a thin crispy outer layer while the inside was fluffy.  Loved the waffle flavor and the sweetness from the sprinkled on powdered sugar. Duck confit had crispy skin and tender duck.  I did not like the garlic bits but they were easily brushed off.  Duck was delicious.  Tied for my favorite duck confit in town with West End Bar. Side of breakfast sausage had a nice snap to the casing.  Pork was tender and I loved the savory pork flavor.  Better than any grocery store sausage I have tried so far. Complimentary soda water was cold and refreshing. Staff was nice and efficient.  Between Us is a great spot to relax and enjoy a delicious breakfast. 2nd visit I tried a classic burger with fries.  Fries were crispy on the outside and I liked the fried potato flavor.  Beef was tender and I enjoyed the high quality beef they used.  Butter lettuce was fresh and crisp.  I prefer it to iceberg lettuce lots of places use.  Tomato were fresh and juicy.  Bacon was crunchy and had a nice smoky and savory flavor.  Very good burger. This brunch spot is just around the corner from my apartment and I think it's become my new favorite brunch spot. It sits on the corner of 30th and Polk in North Park and has a nice view of the street, which is good for people watching. Love the decor and furniture, like a nice mid century modern look with bright colors to match. I've been a few times now, mainly during the week for brunch as I've seen it quite busy on the weekends. Nice place to catch up with friends or even family/ group as they can accommodate. Staff is always really friendly and attentive, which I appreciate. As for the food, I've ordered the following - latke egg benedict - it was light and fresh, but I will say, the potato latke was a little too crispy and maybe a little too burned for my taste. Otherwise, it was really good and the flavors all complimented each other - side of 2 eggs - I added for extra protein - mushroom rice - a nice add if you are a rice lover and it had a nice light mushroom flavor to it - mushroom toast added poached egg - this is my go to as I live a savory yet fresh brunch. The ricotta spread pairs well with a good portion of mushrooms and fresh herbs and green lightly tossed in a vinegary dressing. Highly recommend! We had a group of four line up right before 9 AM on Mother's Day for Sunday breakfast/brunch. After doors opened we got sat fairly quickly. Our sever took our drink orders and appetizers a few minutes after we sat and had a chance to go over the menu. The food was delicious. Fresh, bold and unique. Every dish had it's own personality. The fried mushrooms with chili crisp was the standout dish. Our group all agreed it was fantastic! Even our friend who is not fond of mushrooms agreed! The matchas were delicious and especially matcha-y. The color was vibrant and I can tell they did not skimp on matcha powder. The only hiccup was that my entree (shared with my friend) took a very long time to arrive. Which was strange because it was a salad harvest bowl with fish protein. We were a little pressed for time since we were getting picked up for Mexico soon. We decided to cancel the order. The sever was well versed on service recovery. Not only did she remove the charge, she packed the bowl to go and offered us complimentary dessert. It was a berry panna cotta and it was superb. All and all it was a great start to Mother's Day. Shakshuka: Catch of the day fish in tomato-chili sauce with Boursin cheese, fennel, eggs, zucchini, and yellow squash, served with house-baked focaccia. SO GOOD! My friend said she gets this everytime and is never dissapointed and I would definitely come back for this! Considering how the other "bread/pastry" items (waffle and cookie crumbs french toast) I had here were so dryyyy the last time I came here I had really low expectations but these were actually moist and fluffy and delicious! Would get these again! I came on a weekend this time, we called and made reservations in advance and I would definitely recommend doing this for the weekend since it was PACKED when we went and when we tried to change the time we were told they were booked from 9-12 so book reservations early if you can! Service was p good, the food actually came out hot this time compared to last time I was here the food came out cold even though it was less busy. We did have to wait a bit long for the food but given how packed the place was that's to be expected. I definitely prefer the seating at the front of the restaurant better than the back. We were sat in the tables in the back this time and it just seemed darker and not as bright as you'd expect a brunch spot to be. It kinda gave bar vibes in the back and interestingly enough they were playing law and order on the tv at 9:30am on a Saturday haha. Overall, I would come back to between us! I would probably just stick to the items we got this time though given that my last experience with the duck & waffles and cookie crumble French toast and tiramisu matcha was so baddd. Really great service by the young man who gave great recommendations. They are dog friendly- but only for the best behaved. The savory Beignets were amazing - the mushroom/truffle dip was spot on! I came with some girlfriends for a Saturday brunch date. Pros: - We ordered sweet beignets which comes with matcha and black sesame cream, shaksoukas and smoked salmon egg benedict. Everything tasted delicious! Great portion too. - You can make reservation in advance so there was really no wait for us, but we did get seated at 9:30AM. - Parking can be difficult. I didn't realize it's paid parking on the Main Street so I got a parking ticket... Our party of 4 ate here for Sunday brunch. We didn't have a reservation so we waited about 30 minutes to snag a table. I recommend making reservations ahead of time. Between Us is located in North Park with no dedicated parking lot-- give yourself extra time to look for street parking. Vibes: All the tables are technically indoor but the large open doors/windows gave a patio feel to the tables in the outskirts. Unfortunately we got seated towards the back where there was less sunlight. There were many 2-4 person tables, some bar seating, and a big table by the entrance that could fit a party of 8. Food: -Beignets ($12): comes with 5 pieces served with black sesame mascarpone and matcha cream. They're limited quantity so we ordered one for the table right away. The beignets weren't anything special but the creams were unique and tasted good. -Bacon Scone ($11): also limited quantity and only available on the weekends. Two scones served with salted yolk butter and raspberry chili preserves on the side. I enjoyed the consistency of the scones and the dips. -Cookie Crunch French Toast ($17): the server asked if we wanted the blueberry or banana brûlée. She recommended the banana brûlée, which I didn't know was an extra $3. It was honestly alright and could've done without paying the extra for the banana. Wouldn't get again. -Mushroom Chazuke ($20) + add poached egg ($4): a variety of mushrooms served with rice and garlic chips. The mushroom broth is poured in the bowl. It was a unique dish that I enjoyed. The serving was big enough for me take home half. Overall: I enjoyed the vibes and location of the place. Came here on a whim with my sister-in-law on a Saturday morning (10a). We expected a line, but to my surprise, there wasn't one. We opted for the bar to avoid waiting, and it was a great choice. The food was served quick. I ordered the mushroom toast and matcha tiramisu, and would 100% order it again! I appreciated the airy ambiance. The aesthetic gave a mid century modern x industrial vibe. I felt relaxed enough to take a breather mid-meal and chat with my SIL before finishing my food. The staff were friendly, and even nearing noon, the service was quick and attentive. Food was super slow, matcha was subpar, it's like a wind tunnel with the windows and door open so it's freezing inside. Overhyped for sure. If you go ask for the drinks super sweet (they don't add much sweetener), and wear extra layers cause it's freezing. Prepare to wait an hour for food. read more

I was so excited to hear about this restaurant opening, and it lived up to the hype and expectations. I got the curry hamburg, the matcha tiramisu latte, and the beignets. The rice of the curry hamburg was perfect and not too soggy or hard. The seasoning of the curry sauce was excellent as well and had just a little bit of spice to bring out the flavor. The matcha tiramisu was unique and well made. The beignets were my favorite. They were not too sweet, and I loved the matcha and black sesame creams. They were the best I've had outside of New Orleans. The restaurant is small and intimate. I would recommend getting a reservation because it's busy and popular. I had to get a dish with tornado eggs, after watching so many videos of them online. I opted for the U.S. fried rice. It did not disappoint! The eggs were perfectly cooked with a slightly wet top and beautiful swirls. The tomato fried rice was superb--with the perfect amount of sweetness and tang. The accompanying meats were all good, especially the sausage. The fried chicken was kinda overkill, but made for nice leftovers. Beignets aren't really my thing, but they were perfectly cooked and the two creams were tasty. My friend's fried chicken sandwich was huge and the fries looked great. Service was very good. Cute hip brunch place. Only street parking and it can be difficult as it gets busy quickly. The staff is friendly and welcoming. Came here for a drink and some beignets. My Butterscotch Matcha Latte was yummy. It wasn't too sweet. However, it is pricey for the size and for what it is...$9. The beignets were okay. The outside was hard and thick. I wanted to like them especially we waited over 30 minutes for them. The only good thing was the black sesame mascarpone and matcha cream to dip the beignets in. The highlight of my meal was the corn bread & co. The fried chicken was very juicy and flavorful, I also appreciated the crisp on the cornbread. The matcha with strawberry was yummy and not too creamy or sweet. The sweet beignets were kind of skimpy on the powder sugar as you can see in the picture. The dipping sauces aren't strong on flavor so the sweetness of the powder sugar was missing for sure. The latke eggs Benedict was kind of a miss for us, prepare for a mix of smokey and sour/ acidic flavors if that sounds good to you. The service was fine. If you go on a beautiful day the restaurant is very open with a nice breeze. I see now from the reviews they offer a fly stopper rotating thing this would be nice if they offered it.
