The Drafthouse has always been one of my favorite neighborhood restaurants. However, my visit after work yesterday was disappointing. I felt rushed throughout my meal. The server repeatedly asked how I was doing, but the interactions didn't come across as warm or caring. Instead, they felt rushed, matter-of-fact, and as though she was trying to wrap up my visit. She took my plate while I was still eating and offered me the check before I had asked for it. I left with the impression that the table was needed for something else, and I didn't feel welcome to relax and enjoy my meal. This visit ended up being way more fun than we expected. A friend is staying with me for Comic-Con this week, so we came here to grab a couple beers and catch up. How have I not left a review here in so long when I love this spot and try to frequent it when I can or if I am in the area. We use to live pretty close by here so it was our go to spot for a drink when we wanted to watch a game on TV and I came back recently and forgot how much I enjoy this spot. I will say for being so close to Balboa Park the parking here isn't too bad I have always been able to find a spot! Most are metered but there are some that are not. They have a great happy hour here but even if you don't make it for happy hour the pricing it pretty good and I love the variety of food options and the food is actually really good for it being a sports bar vibe. We managed to get a table at the back. This place has a huge long bar and a couple of tables for families/party to enjoy their dinner. They had the inside decorated with Christmas decor. It's been a while but I remember going on a little happy hour kinda sorta date with a former coworker who ended up being a total weirdo. We sat outside and shared Brussels + Buffalo Cauliflower. I believe he had the fig burger while I sipped on a couple vodka sodas prior to heading over to Balboa Park for their haunted trails. I really enjoyed everything about this kinda sorta date except for the person I was on that kinda sorta date with. 3-4 Stars. I came around 2:55 pm when it was on and off sprinkling. We sat on their side patio since we had a group of 8. They luckily had thick sun sails to protect us from the rain above. They also turned on 1 heater, they had another one but it only lasted for a short period of time. The workers were really nice and patient when it came to us looking at the menu to order. Just something to note, there's a surcharge and for parties of 8 or more, they have an automatic 20% gratuity (even if you ask for the checks to be split). I ordered the $21 Corner Drafthouse Burger with a side of fries (regular). I requested no onions and they also ask you how you like your burger to be cooked. I'm not particularly sure, so I just said "well." The burger comes with tomato, leafy lettuce, cheese, and a secret sauce. The sauce didn't have lots of flavor if you were to compare it to 1000 island vibe. The bun was toasted, but quite fluffy as well. It also came with a very very juicy slice of pickle. The fries were beautifully done with a nice and light crisp and a fluffy interior. It was a good lunch, but I'm not sure it's worth $27.72! Notes: To drink, most of us just had iced water. In my opinion, the water didn't taste very good. The waitresses didn't think to give us napkins except for the 4x4 napkin under the French fry holder. We had to go back in to ask (we are on the patio). She did ask if we needed anything else, and at the time-- I personally didn't need anything. But half way through, I wish she came back out to ask-- I would have liked more ketchup...Maybe next time, they can fill up the little metal cup more. On the other hand, some people would say it's nice that she left us alone so that we could all converse. My friend had the $21 Cubano with Sweet Potato Fries. It contained mojo pork, ham, swiss cheese, pickles, mustard, garlic aioli on a pressed hoagie roll. He said it was delicious, and saved half to take home for dinner. The waitress said it was a popular menu item! My other friend, ordered the ~$23 Mushroom Bacon Swiss Burger but subbed the actual meat patty with the Impossible Patty. She said it was a little freaky with how much it looked like a real patty when cooked. I also had to do a double take! Overall, it was a nice spot near Balboa Park (easy straight line walk from the bridge) to come with friends. For me personally, the price is already on the higher side and having the surcharge + the gratuity was a bit of an overkill esp since the gratuity was 20%. If I'm alone, I probably wouldn't come again. But I did hear that the pretzel bites are a crowd pleaser-- which is great for people that drink beer as well (because they pair well together). My friends and I decide to go here for our annual holiday drink meet up. We used to go somewhere else, but this year wanted a place that took reservations. The decor here was cute (look at my picture for the sign with lights), so it passed our vibe check. I managed to find metered street parking. The sign said 2 hours from 8-6, so I only had to pay for about an hour since I got there at 5. We loved how the holiday drinks came in cute cups (check my pic of the peppermint czar). We asked our server what he recommends, so one of my friends ordered the ahi poke bowl and I proceeded to have order envy. My other friend ordered the pork bulgogi bowl and I got the fig burger hut asked for onion rings instead of fries. We all needed to go boxes because we got full after making it through about halfway through our orders.
