Stumbled upon this speakeasy bar in downtown SD, and I am glad I found this place. It is located inside the Neighborhood restaurant. The ambiance is a spooky, cool vibe; it is very small with very little seating. Highly recommend making a reservation; otherwise, it is a 1-2 hour wait. I would say this experience was the highlight of my trip. What makes this bar unique compared to other bars is that there isn't a menu. Instead, you would just describe your ideal drink or what you're in the mood for, and the bartender will just make you a drink. The bartender, Quintin killed it with my order. I told him to make me a fruity strong drink, where I can't really taste the alcohol. Amazing experience, i will be back!

Truly a noble idea--and an even better experiment. Noble Experiment is a must-visit in San Diego if you're tired of the same old cocktail menus. Instead of picking a drink, you just describe your "ideal" vibe--the flavors you're into, the spirits you like, and the mood you're after--and the bartenders whip up something unique just for you. My drink was spot on; it's rare to find a place that actually listens and nails the profile that perfectly. The vibe inside is incredibly cool and intimate, but the best part is the "secret" transition from the outside restaurant. Speaking of which, the food at the main restaurant is actually top-tier, so it makes for a solid full night out. If you want a bespoke drink in a space that feels genuinely hidden away, this is the spot.

This is a cool downtown speakeasy located inside The Neighborhood restaurant and bar. The entrance is hidden behind a door that looks like a wall of kegs. No reservations are needed for this experience, however there is usually a wait. The decor inside is really cool and every inch from floor to ceiling is decorated. There are no menus here. Your bartender will ask you a series of questions to find out what your tastes are and then will perfectly craft a cocktail that is tailored to you. I went with two friends this time, and we each had two drinks. Every drink we got was perfect for us and fit our individual tastes dead on. Go check this place out for yourself if you haven't already!

Worth the wait! An amazing experience coming here, loved the ambiance, great for smaller parties or date night. I really liked the experience, and i applaud the bartender on his knowledge and creativity with making drinks. We chatted for a bit to discussion my preferences and he came out with an amazing drink! Definitely bookmarking this place and coming back

Amazing experience! Besides the very cool decor and vibes, our bartender, Nicole, was wonderful. There are no menus here. You describe what you like in a drink, and the bartender will make you a drink based on those preferences. My friends and I have very different tastes, and Nicole absolutely nailed all of them. Highlight of the weekend and definitely recommend if you're in the area.

So, I'm not usually into bars that aren't also restaurants, but this place is amazing. First, it's fun to go through the "secret" entrance in the back. We had hear that if you get there right when they open at 6PM there won't be a wait and we found this was correct! It is a small place and fills up fast. The atmosphere is fun with a "spooky" vibe with the skull wall, cobwebs on the chandelier and portraits on the ceiling. The bartenders are amazing. There is no menu; you describe what you like and they run ideas by you to create your ideal cocktail and my gosh do they nail it. I am not exaggerating when I say these were some of the best cocktails I've had in my life. They make a lot of the ingredients in house and it shows. The flavor combinations are amazing. I had an herb-citrus negroni like first round and a gin, herb, cucumber second round. I almost never have a second cocktail but this was such a unique experience. Cost is the same for anything they put together so no worries about ending up with a $50 cocktail based on what the bartender makes. Definitely a must visit place if you're in the area and in the mood for a creative cocktail or two. Lots of options for food nearby for before or after your cocktail experience!

Noble Experiment was a unique experience, no doubt. After the Padre's game, we walked over to Neighborhood to grab some appetizers. Youngblood was booked for the night, but we were able to grab a reservation for Noble. The ambiance gave "libation library" and they have framed paintings all over the ceiling. The music was ON POINT, and they played some of my favorite artists - Larry June, Badu, Dom Kennedy (Just so you know what type of time they on). The concept is dope! You tell the mixologist your favorite spirits, fruits, or spices, and they curate a cocktail for you. The mixologist made me a cocktail that taste like a boozy fruit roll up, and it was fantastic. Definitely add this to your "must try" speakeasys in downtown San Diego.

This place was pretty cool, there was no menus and the bartender will ask you questions of what flavor profiles you enjoy, and he will make up a cocktail for you right in front of you. Ambience was nicely dimmed. They didn't have any food, but we definitely enjoyed the drinks.

Place was so good I came in on back to back days! Service is impeccable, staff are very helpful and talkative and make drinks very, very strong.

Parking is super tough in the area, better to rideshare or pay for parking in an ACE lot nearby. We were able to walk in without a reservation for bar seating. Walk in through Neighborhood and they will point you to the speakeasy which is behind the barrel doors near the restrooms. The interior is beautiful. Don't forget to snap a photo of or in front of the skull wall! Very impressive. The space is very small, not good for large parties. They have bar seating and bench style seating. Some of the seats at the bar are directly facing the AC vent so I got very cold very quickly. There is no menu. You let your bartender know your spirit of choice and flavor profile and they craft the drink in front of you. Each drink was $18. I asked for a sweet drink. My drink was rum based but was a tad too bitter. Friend asked for something light and refreshing. They said theirs tasted like medicine, very herbally, but they liked it. It was very bitter. Both drinks were very strong. Be sure to eat before coming as they do not offer food.

I thought the vibes were really cool and the concept of the bartenders making drinks based off what you're feeling was interesting. However, I'm not too sure if I'd come again. Maybe we went on a really busy night because it took like an hour to get sat as a party of 4 without reservation and our bartender only came to us to get vibes for our first and only drink, drop it off, and give us the check. It did seem really busy as the bartenders were entertaining the people sat at the bar counter, but my group at the table were down to order more given we waited that long to get sat. Parking in the area is also pretty rough as other people say. Despite all that, our guy really did a phenomenal job making my drink LOL

One of two small speakeasy's in The Neighborhood. Noble experiment has a wall covered in skulls across from its bar. There is bar seating and a row of small tables. They don't take reservations for parties less than four, but we had no wait going on a Sunday evening. There is also no menu and you just tell the bartenders what flavors and spirits you like. There were two bartenders working. I was underwhelmed by my first drink as it tasted like Moscow mule to me. My second drink was more unique, but I didn't love it. It is a cool place to go for a drink and it wasn't too expensive for what it is. It was about $19 per cocktail before tip.

We did not have reservations on a Saturday night, so we made sure to arrive close to opening and we were able to walk right in. Noble Experiment is tucked inside of Neighborhood, so you have to walk past the bathrooms and go through the 'secret' keg door to get to NE. The concept is there is no menu and the bartender comes up with something for you on-the-spot. They asked questions about spirit of choice, do you like fruity, floral, sweet, bold etc. We each enjoyed the drinks that we got and felt that the bartender did a good job in listening to our order. That being said, I do think your mileage varies with this 'no-cocktail menu' concept. While the bartender did a good job of navigating through different drink profiles/asking questions to help narrow things down, I think the drinks that we all got respectively were 'limited' in terms of the number of elements/flavor/how far they can go. In comparison to a bar with a pre-set menu where the drinks have been thoroughly thought-out and designed where they are confident that the drink on the menu is worth putting on the menu, this style makes more sense to not go 'too' far off the beaten path. To be fair, we didn't explicitly ask for 'unique ingredients' or anything to that effect because we were all open to anything the bartender crafted, but something worth noting. I'm sure that if someone in your group was really knowledgeable about mixology, then they could really go all out for something truly unique that would be a stand-out, but for our group of regular drinkers, I understand that our drinks were what they were (not a bad thing!).

Is it reservation only? What are the odds of walking in (since online won't let me make a reservation for a large -or any size for that matter- party) and getting a spot for 6?

They don't take large parties (from my experience). I'd say 3 is the max... their tables are pretty small!

Do you need reservations for a party of two?

Hello Wendy! Thank you for reaching out. We take walk-ins on a first come first serve basis

    Can I wear a hat?

Yes I would say so- I'm not positive but this location is a bit more causal and everyone is so nice! I do not think that would be a problem.

What's the average price per drink?

For most cocktails, it's $15. If you ask for a specific brand of hard liquor to be mixed in, it could be more expensive.

Why does OpenTable only allow reservations of 2 people?

Do we need to make a reservation?

I went about a month ago and they were taking walk-ins, would highly recommend making reservations though ahead of time.

Can we bring our 11 month old daughter with us?

No, it is only a bar so only 21+

    Do they serve food?

No, noble experiment only offers water and alcoholic beverages. If you are looking for food you can get some outside at the neighborhood bar.

    Are you open?

Actually, we are not. We are currently undergoing some exciting and overdue renovations and riding out the COVID wave before reopening our door.

Very interesting and cool mix of Signature drinks. They also had non alcoholic beverages. The whole menu is plant based. Drinks were very interesting and really good. Food is Spanish style tapas. Small plates to share. I think we ordered almost everything in the menu Bread, Potatoes, Rice, Tofu, Bao Bun Sandwiches and Savory Pancake. Every dish was delicious and nicely presented. Place was medium loud and it felt that you actually entered another planet like in the tv series of Star Trek. Bathrooms looked like the elevator of a starship. Outstanding decor. Service was really good until the part that they rushed us through our dinner. That is why I put 3 stars. No where I saw that seating was maximum for two hours but they even rushed us more. Our reservation was at 730pm and they took us out of our table at 9pm. Very nicely they told us that we had to leave because they had another reservation. We were not even through our second cocktail and we had to leave it half drank. That is why my 3 star rating. I think that was very rude. For four people to celebrate a bday an hour and a half is very little time to share. It was a nice one time experience but that is all. I hope everyone working can be on the same page moving forward to avoid this happening again to others. I decided to come by for birthday dinner and figured 8pm was a decent time to still get great food and service. We made a reservation in advance and got to a table in 5 minutes. That's wonderful, always love that for anyone. The non-alcoholic drinks are always a favorite as someone who's been sober for years. However, it all got much more complicated after that. After not hearing or getting any updates from the server for 50 mins on our appetizer, we asked if everything was ok and if they had potentially forgot about our order. It's happened before no worries. The server said no and it just takes a while. That's fine and fair, it's to be expected on a skeleton crew for a Wednesday night shift. It was odd to see at least 4 tables and groups who had been seated after us get their food before us. When we got our Doom Bloom, around 8:55pm, over 50% of it was burnt to a crisp, the smaller mushrooms had been completely blackened to a point where you could just taste charred. Something tells me this is not the best way to serve food to others but what do I know as someone who's been coming here for years. When we got our Mind Melt and BBQ Jackfruit, which was another 50 minutes later now around 9:40pm, these entrees had met the same fate. The BBQ Jackfruit sourdough was so dry and burnt it tasted like a saltine cracker left in a campfire as a joke. The fries were overcooked, super dry, and stale all at the same time. It's like it was left in the heat lamp for 30 minutes or far too long to be enjoyed for what would be great food. My partners food thankfully wasn't to the same degree as mine but still not great. We were checking with ourselves quietly to make sure the other wasn't loosing it or if we were missing out on something. People will be people and that will never change. I hope some else won't have to spend over $100 with tip included to get the same service we got. I cannot imagine how bad things are behind the scenes for this to be a standard the staff are okay with and that they perpetuate based off other recent reviews in this matter. It was embarrassing and a waste of money. I do not recommend coming here given how this situation has transpired. My stomach still hurts while typing this review on my sofa at home.

The only reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars is that, while the experience and ambiance were amazing, the drinks are definitely on the pricier side. Once seated, though, we sat for about 20 minutes without anyone acknowledging us. I eventually had to flag someone down just to get water. We then waited even longer for our server to take our order. Because service was so slow, I ordered all of our drinks and food at once since I wasn't sure when we'd see our server again. What stood out even more was watching a couple seated next to us receive immediate attention. They were greeted, served water right away, and the woman was offered a purse hook. Meanwhile, we were sitting there with our purses shoved beside us and weren't offered the same courtesy. It may seem like a small detail, but combined with the lack of attention, it made us feel overlooked. The drinks came out quickly, and the chicken satay and mac and cheese were decent. Nothing was bad, but nothing really stood out food-wise either. The highlight of the evening was definitely the live music. The performers were fantastic and created a great atmosphere that honestly was the only enjoyable part of the evening.

Immediately fell in love with this quaint and chicly decorated speakeasy lounge. The staff was…read moreincredibly personable and helpful. The vibe was relaxed and unassuming. When I made the reservation, it was noted that there is a 1.5 hour limit on the table. Thankfully, Botanica isn't incredibly stringent about this rule as it gave us more time to eat, drink and be merry. My friend and I split the bill and I paid $87.49 with tip included. Here's what we had: Blistered shishito peppers - mild spice but flavorful New York strip yakitori - ordered two of these because they were that good! The steak was tender and the sauce rendered an umami flavor Botanika roll - tasted fine, but it ate one note. You can taste the citrusy parts but not much else. Mochi dessert - you can only get dessert if you order the pre fixe chef menu, but since our waitress didn't know this, she put the order in and gave it to us! We were incredibly grateful because it was the perfect end to a good meal For cocktails we ordered Spirited Away, Dragon of the West, Kyoko Sakura & Heads will Roll. All of the cocktails were beautifully presented and quite tasty.

I parked on the street close to the dinner spot I went to and then walked over to Charade. Ambiance (5/5): Charade is a speakeasy so here's your clue. It's located inside Balboa. Look for the room with the arcade games and you're on the right track. Once you enter the speakeasy, you'll immediately be impressed with the old school charm. It seats roughly 20-30 people and there's a bar on one end and a stage on the other end. Old school red curtains add to the vibe. And here's the best part. On Mondays, it's jazz night. Local musicians will play which makes for a great time. Service (3/5): There was one bartender working when we were there. Overall, she provided pretty good service. There was one comment she made which rubbed me the wrong way but no biggie. Food (N/A): I had dinner prior so were on a liquid diet. I did notice that they have a few snacks available like popcorn. Drinks (4.5/5): When you think of speakeasies, you think of elevated cocktails. I look for creativity and an interesting blend of flavors and ingredients. The menu here, while not huge, has some interesting options. Outside of the menu itself, the prices are reasonable (especially for California). And they make you stiff drinks which is always appreciated. Taking into account the cocktails and the ambiance, Charade is an awesome laid-back speakeasy. Make sure to stop by on a Monday for jazz night. That takes things up a notch.
