We had some restaurant credit to use, so my husband and I decided to visit on a weekday night. Unfortunately, the experience was underwhelming. Despite making a reservation a week in advance, we weren't given a standard table and had to choose between a bar table or outdoor seating, which was frustrating. We chose the bar to stay indoors, but service was quite slow. The restaurant seemed incredibly busy and understaffed--I honestly felt bad for the waitstaff. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance is decent for drinks and casual snacks, but it doesn't quite feel like a 'full meal' destination.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We ordered several items, including the cosmo knots, kefta skewers, cheeseburger, cheesecake, penne alla vodka, and some potatoes with dip. Everything was average at best, with the exception of the cosmo knots, which were delicious. Overall, I'd probably go here for drinks with a friend & light snacks, but that's about it.

The three of us came here on a Saturday afternoon and had a great time. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The bar is beautifully decorated, with both indoor and patio seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The drinks were fresh and expertly made. We tried the Palace of Certainty, Bees Knees, Camino Muerto, and King Friday. Since the menu rotates, it felt fun to try a few different options. [[HIGHLIGHT]]One funny detail was that the main bar had some goth-themed music playing, while both the men's and women's restrooms had death metal. It added to the character of the place.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Great drinks and a really cool atmosphere.

Vulture is dead. Long live Kindred! I'm glad my prayers were answered. I guess I prayed to the right deity, because the Vulture Martini is back. I have had a few martinis in my day, and this one may well be the best. The Dirty Martini may be the second best. I'd probably stop there, but my wife loved her Brooklyn during our last visit, and she is not even a big fan of peach. Skewers are still great. I missed out on one of the pickled things. Was it a pear? Not sure. The carrots were good. I missed out on my opportunity to try the French Onion Soup at Vulture, so I was really happy to see it on the Kindred menu. Surely this could win over carnivores. Vive la soupe à l'oignon française! Maybe I will try the Steak Frites next time, which I think is another Vulture holdover. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was great to see Kindred busy on a Monday night.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Let's support the vegan places, people. Peace

Amazing little vegan restaurant off the beaten pass different kind of vibes from most restaurants that are vegan. Bartender was attentive. Must make reservations for this place. We just showed up and the only seating we could get was the bar. I got appetizers the drone bloom mushroom they were OK have the onion soup it was amazing. My daughter also got the grilled cheese that was out of this world. Little disappointed with the Desert option (cannoli) as in that great place.

My bf wanted me to check this place out and I really loved the vibe! the bar area and the seating is pretty unique and the bartenders are very friendly. We came for drinks before heading to dinner and the Kult classics were very tasty. Highly recommend! It does get busy on weeknights.

    wayne k.

to start with, we will be back. reasons: 1. the doom bloom is addictively good. never thought fried mushrooms can taste so good. 2. the tofu skewers were just fire. perfectly seasoned. so good. some of the reasons that would keep me from coming back. service. rather slow and infrequent. the drink was way too sweet. i had the miracle cure and it was more like fruit flavored sugar water. [[HIGHLIGHT]]the seating was creative but not very comfortable.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]lots to see in the bar though.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] but. as i mentioned to start, we will be back.

I was recommended this spot by my coworker who said this is one of the few vegan joints that actually make vegan food tastes good, and this is coming from a coworker who loves eating all the meat! We came in for a weekday dinner around 6pm and it was pretty packed. The only bad part of the experience was probably waiting to be acknowledged and seated. Usually if the host is too busy to seat people, they'll at least acknowledge us so we know they are aware that they still need to seat us; however, we were probably standing there for a good five minutes or so of not being acknowledged. We were about to leave but thankfully were acknowledged and got seated right away. Their cocktail menu is quite extensive! It did take us a while to decide what we wanted, but this is the cocktails and food that we decided on: Skewer Battle (2pcs of each kind of skewer: chimichurri, kefta, tofu Cosmo Knots Heart & Soul King Friday Akumanouta A must order is definitely the skewers. I thought tofu and keft would be my least favorite but they were actually on par with the chimichurri. Luckily we had more food on the way, otherwise, I would be requesting for another order. The cosmo knots looked like garlic knots, but since they use puff pastry, it's a lot lighter and crispier! These were gone super fast. The heart & soul was indeed quite a hearty platter. It resembles a vegan country fried steak with mashed potatoes. Perfectly fried and seasoned! King Friday cocktail intrigued me since it said limit two per person and the waiter had explained because it was one of the stronger cocktails (even though it doesn't taste like it) and once I tried it, I can see why it was popular, it made me feel like I was sipping on a cocktail on a tropical island. The Akumanouta which uses japanese whiskey was on the lighter and refreshing side. Despite the slight mishap in the beginning, I think I'd definitely keep this spot in my back pocket if anyone in my party is craving for vegan food!

Super cool place! [[HIGHLIGHT]]I love the open air dining, and we had good service.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The place is fully vegan but if you're like us and wander in you don't even realize until they tell you. They can also accommodate nut allergies, which can be unusual for vegan places. We loved the cosmo bread and enjoyed the carbonara.

Kindred absolutely knocked it out of the park!!! My boyfriend and I came here for a Friday date night and we had an amazing experience. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance is cohesively eclectic and every part of the restaurant is fun to look at![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We came in without a reservation at 6 and were seated immediately. Our hostess was wonderful, as was our bartender who we also put in our food orders with. We first ordered the starspun and luck dragon drinks. Both were fantastic and came out quickly! For food we ordered the BBQ jackfruit sandwich with fries and Egg roll burger with brussel sprouts on the side. Both were absolutely phenomenal, we could not pick a favorite! I am a lifelong vegetarian but my boyfriend eats and enjoys meat and we were both blown away by the food here! Meat eaters and vegans alike will all love this place:) We capped the night off with a Gloom coil and Iron bell! Both were fantastic but we decided that the Iron Bell was the best drink of the night in both of our opinions (I would recommend it to anyone who goes). Kindred is a great weekly date night spot with fun drinks and fantastic (and relatively well priced) food!

2nd time to this place. It is nice that everything is vegan and plant based. However, food isn't the healthiest here I have to say. I did like my egg roll hamburger but I know it could have been more healthy. Flavor was good though. Small. I also had the bbq pulled pork jackfruit sandwich before - a little on the salty side. Small. Miracle drink non alcoholic was good but probably a lot of sugar... Also had carrots - a little on the oily side. Also had the chimichurri seitan skewers. Those were probably my favorite. They ran out of the tofu and the other kind so didn't get to try it unfortunately. Not the best value for your dollar restaurant- higher prices with small servings. Also not the healthiest food but flavors are good. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Bathrooms a little weird with some weird artwork and I think the sinks connect with the men's bathroom...[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Kindred in South Park is such a cute, hip spot with a really stylish interior. Parking can be tricky since it's right in the heart of South Park, but it's worth it. The restaurant is fully vegan and has an amazing, creative menu. Some of my favorites are the mac and cheese, pinwheels, soup, and grilled cheese. They also have a great brunch menu. Everything we've tried is really flavorful and satisfying. There's a bar with lots of drink options -- we don't drink, but it seems like there's plenty to choose from. The place can get crowded and a bit loud, but that's part of the fun hip ambiance. On weekends, the line can get long, but it's absolutely worth the wait. Overall, a fantastic spot for vegan food lovers who enjoy a lively, stylish atmosphere.

Kindred is a vegan goth/metal bar with a dinner menu from 5-10pm. They also have brunch on weekends starting at 11:30am (and there's no wait!). When I came to San Diego in 2018, we came for dinner, so when I came back this time, I wanted to try their brunch. If you don't drink, they also have cute mocktails with edible flower garnishes. We ordered biscuits and gravy and a breakfast sandwich. I like that the breakfast sandwich has pickles on it. Everything I've ever had from there has been SO GOOD.

A great plant-based spot in San Diego. This last round we only got drinks, but we loved our espresso martinis at the bar

The single worst experience I've ever had going out…read more If you're friends with the servers, bartenders, or hosts, you'll probably have a great time. If you're not a regular, be careful, because apparently all it takes is one drunk friend of the staff making up a story to get you kicked out. While visiting San Diego with friends, we came here after hearing so many great things. There was a short wait, which was fine. The four of us were seated at a small standing table, also fine. Behind us were two guys drinking at the standing bar. One of them bumped into my friend and then stroked her arm while apologizing. She was visibly uncomfortable, so I told her to switch places with me. The guy immediately said, "We're gay, so you don't have to worry," then turned to his friend and said, "Now he looks so stupid and embarrassing." I told him, "I don't think it's embarrassing to make sure your friends are comfortable," then turned back around. I didn't argue with him, insult him, or continue the conversation. I thought that was the end of it. A few minutes later, the manager came over and told us we had made comments that made other patrons uncomfortable and asked us to leave. We had already paid for our drinks and were still waiting for them. My friend followed the manager to ask what was going on, and I joined shortly after. The person complaining was, of course, the same guy who had bumped into her. He was clearly drunk and started rambling about how we had made homophobic comments toward him and his friend. This was especially ridiculous considering the friend I switched places with was there with her girlfriend. We calmly explained exactly what happened. The manager did not care. There was no real attempt to hear our side, ask questions, or figure out what actually happened. The decision had clearly already been made. While we were speaking to the manager, the guy who complained was cheerfully talking with one of the bartenders, receiving a to-go meal, and greeting them cheek to cheek. He very obviously appeared to know the staff. So that seems to be how things work here: a drunk regular or friend of the staff can make up whatever story he wants, and management will throw out an entire group of paying customers without even pretending to investigate. They refunded the drinks, which was the bare minimum. The ambience was nice, but that means absolutely nothing when the staff handles customers this poorly. Awful management, blatant favoritism, and easily the worst service I have ever experienced. I would never come back, and I would strongly warn anyone who isn't already friends with the staff to stay away.

Sadly, the B&R Mac n Cheese did not do it for me. It was missing seasoning and the flakes tasted stale. The staff did give us salt & pepper to jazz it up which did help. Regardless of the mac n cheese, I really enjoyed this place. The red wine was perfection. Overall it was a great experience and I gotta go back to check out other food items.

It's been great, fantastic Little Italy & this spot is perfect for afternoon easy breezy vibes. The decor is inviting & the music is chill, relax with a laidback groove. The bartenders on point with this drink. I ordered the MMM. . . Food. It's more sour in the Whiskey Rye sour category Love the record collection. Wanna just hang after dinner, this is your spot. I'm including the screen shot of the music playing right now. Bravo bartender/DJ You can also order & pay by barcode. How convenient when the night gets busy. Will definitely be back.

She appeared to be the only one working, yet there were already eight or nine people on the patio. Even so, she stayed on top of everything, and we never had to wait to place an order or receive our drinks. I ordered: * Static Age: This refreshing green cocktail is served in a tall Collins glass and is made with vodka, matcha green tea, vanilla, yuzu, and seltzer. It wasn't overly liquor-forward, making it light and perfect for a warm afternoon. * MM..Food?: Served in a cocktail glass, this drink features masala chai rye whiskey, vanilla honey, ginger bitters, lemon, and egg white. While the flavor combination sounded interesting, it ended up being just okay. It wasn't bad, but it didn't really stand out and wasn't my favorite of the two. *Espresso Martini: this was also enjoyable and not too sweet. Overall, this is a fun spot with a great atmosphere. The courtyard has plenty of energy, live musicians performing, and several restaurants surrounding the area, making it a great place to relax and enjoy a drink. Although none of the cocktails I tried really stood out or have me rushing back for more, it's a nice spot to stop by.

As the self-appointed king of speakeasies, I'm back at it with another one. After having dinner in…read morethe area, we stopped by Charade for some drinks on a Monday night. I parked on the street close to the dinner spot I went to and then walked over to Charade. Ambiance (5/5): Charade is a speakeasy so here's your clue. It's located inside Balboa. Look for the room with the arcade games and you're on the right track. Once you enter the speakeasy, you'll immediately be impressed with the old school charm. It seats roughly 20-30 people and there's a bar on one end and a stage on the other end. Old school red curtains add to the vibe. And here's the best part. On Mondays, it's jazz night. Local musicians will play which makes for a great time. Service (3/5): There was one bartender working when we were there. Overall, she provided pretty good service. There was one comment she made which rubbed me the wrong way but no biggie. Food (N/A): I had dinner prior so were on a liquid diet. I did notice that they have a few snacks available like popcorn. Drinks (4.5/5): When you think of speakeasies, you think of elevated cocktails. I look for creativity and an interesting blend of flavors and ingredients. The menu here, while not huge, has some interesting options. Outside of the menu itself, the prices are reasonable (especially for California). And they make you stiff drinks which is always appreciated. Taking into account the cocktails and the ambiance, Charade is an awesome laid-back speakeasy. Make sure to stop by on a Monday for jazz night. That takes things up a notch.
