My brother found this place several years ago on his visits to SD. It's now become a regular spot whenever we are in town. Most recently we were there for an event and as always, they were nothing short of exceptional! The drinks are always fantastic but what really elevates this place is the staff. They always have the best attitude, they are so accommodating, and you can tell they want you to enjoy your experience in every way. During our most recent visit, Lamar really went above and beyond to ensure our group was able to all be together for an event. This place is hidden inside Craft & Commerce which is a quirky little bar itself. There was a wait for entry this past Sunday after 9pm. Staff was also not very attentive to guests' needs, rather just going through the motions. For instance, they noted "standing room only" and that they would eventually seat our party of two. They walked us to an exact spot on the floor to stand and view the menu in the dark (we used our phone flashlights, but it wasn't easy while carrying our belongings too), and they instructed us not to order at the bar in this colorful but dimly lit tiki lounge. We essentially ordered from staff who took our order in the middle of the floor, then we had to hold our drinks, some that came with additional shot glasses, in full hands, as we were never seated. We did find a barrel to set our drinks on later, but their process and expectations for guests was just really weird and impractical. The theme and decor of the setting was lovely, with moments of a lightning and thunder effect that made the experience more immersive. But we were not impressed by the sticky menus and sticky floor, nor the lack of service and minimal help from staff while there. We made the most of our time at False Idol regardless of their shortcomings. The bombay sling and enigma de muerte were pretty decent in quality and flavor, so it's safe to say the drinks aren't the problem here. If you're looking for a fun place to grab cocktails, this is definitely a spot worth checking out! **Located inside Craft & Commerce Walking into False Idol honestly feels like you've been transported somewhere else. The decor, lighting, and sound effects all come together to make the experience feel fun and memorable. Just know, if you are hoping to sit down, good luck! A lot of reservations are made in advance. However, at the bar, if you see a reservation sign and they're not there yet, staff will let you sit down once it's time to get up for the reserved party. DRINKS: 9/10 The cocktails were creative, well crafted, and definitely strong enough to make you feel like you were getting your money's worth. I also loved how much attention they put into the presentation. Every drink looked like a piece of art and added to the whole tiki experience. SERVICE: 9/10 The staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. They took the time to answer questions and made great recommendations without making us feel rushed. AMBIANCE: 10/10 This is easily the highlight of the experience. The entire space is beautifully designed, and every little detail makes it feel like you've escaped into a hidden tropical bar. It's cozy, intimate, and unlike any other place I've been to in San Diego. Reservations are definitely worth making since the space is on the smaller side and fills up quickly. The only reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars is that, while the experience and ambiance were amazing, the drinks are definitely on the pricier side. I understand you're paying for the craftsmanship and atmosphere, but it's probably not somewhere I'd visit regularly because of that. It's common for tiki bars to be pricey so it was to be expected. Went here with advance knowledge of the place during our PHX to SD whirlwind vacation to see Bob Dylan at the Rady Shell. Had to put in our names, as there is only so much space on an early Saturday evening. Took all of 10 minutes before entry was granted. Led inside to a standing room-only table. Lady friend got the Saturn, myself the 151 Swizzle. I probably did the wrong thing and didn't allow the ice packed on top of the swizzle to melt thoroughly enough into the drink to dilute the 151 overproof black Demerara's rum. Nae worries, brah. Once inside seating is first come first served so the place is insanely crowded with people trying to get drinks. The menu is mostly rum drinks since this is a rum bar however since I'm not the biggest fan I ordered the only thing with tequila on the menu. My False Idol experience was memorable, albeit blurry toward the end! My boyfriend and I had been on a half-day tour beforehand, but I saw that False Idol was near our hotel and I insisted we stop in for a cocktail before calling it a night. I knew it was a speakeasy but he did not. I was trying to double-check on my phone that Craft & Commerce was the right restaurant its housed in (yes) when he tried to jet set off down the block "to keep looking" rather than listen to me. I yelled, "MOTHER!" by accident and then he did truly leave me hahaha. He resurfaced a few minutes later, and then we walked in. It was 5:15 at the time, so 15 minutes after opening. I had NO IDEA how popular this spot was, nor anything about its nation-wide reputation. I actually didn't know that until two days ago when a Yelp-friend at home here in Richmond, Virginia, exclaimed excitedly when I told her we stopped in. The host who greeted us was kind, informed us there had been a line to get in that day, but that they had one barrel left; we jumped on it of course. It was happy hour, so the first cocktail I ordered was dirt cheap at $9. It was the Imperial Hawaiian with gin, rum, lemon, pineapple, and orgeat. I really shouldn't have ordered a second drink after that one, but I did have the classic Saturn later on in the night and it was absurdly good! Definitely my favorite of the two. The moody tiki vibe was so cool and fun. They even had frogs you could play on the tables. We had some fun neighbors too, which livened up the experience even more. A highlight during my recent visit to San DIego was visiting one of the coolest tiki bars, False Idol. They had the most beautifully decorated drinks I've ever seen in a place that has thunderstorms when they serve certain drinks! I would highly recommend making reservations. If you don't you may wind up standing during your visit. It's a small place and has limited seating. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. She was able to make recommendations that were spot on. The drink menu is huge!! No food in the bar, but it is attached to a restaurant if you would like to eat before or after you visit False Idol. I loved this place! Stopped by Falls Idol this past Saturday on our way back from Panda Fest, and it turned out to be such a fun, spontaneous experience. We arrived about 10-15 minutes before opening, let the staff know we were walk-ins, and they were super accommodating--they gave us about 60 minutes at a table despite reservations coming in. The space itself is very small and tucked inside another venue, but that honestly adds to the charm. It's dimly lit with a unique, immersive vibe--think jungle-inspired with eclectic decor. At one point, there were rumbling sounds and subtle vibrations through the chairs, which made the whole experience feel interactive and different from your typical bar. The drinks were creative and fun (one of my friends even kept the drink garnish as a collectible), and the staff was friendly and welcoming throughout. It's definitely more about the ambiance and experience than anything else. I'd come back again--especially around the holidays to see how they switch up the decor. Came to San Diego for 2 specific places, The Zoo and False Idol. I have to say the decorations here are killer, it's a blast to look around at all the art. The entrance was totally bizarre being inside another restaurant, cool but bizarre. We were able to arrive an hour before our reservation and snag a bar seat, love that! The staff was super friendly from start to finish, but I have to say, all of the drinks we had were not really what we expected. This is still a great a bar, but the drinks were really unbalanced for us, everything was super heavy on citrus. Still a great experience but if you are used to high caliber tiki bars it was just weird to find these so unbalanced. I feel like I got abused by the lord of citrus. Decoratively invigorating under dim lights and netted ornaments and lamps hanging from above, the interior was packed and booming with music and conversations from every corner. I ordered a Painkiller cocktail, a strong, chilling drink. Some of the others in the group mentioned their drinks were just ok. We were crowding around the bar area, though since someone didn't show for their reservation, we lucked out and snagged a table. Service was great and pretty efficient. There were several folks ordering something that triggered the sounds of a thunderstorm followed by a visually eye-catching show of lights and smoke. We were most certainly amused after the fifth time it happened. As others have mentioned, the restrooms have the sound of a British guy reading out the restaurant's bad reviews. When joining the waitlist, just know when you get in, you just stand around or wait for a highly coveted bar seat to open up. They have an extensive cocktail menu, and from the two we got it's safe to say that you can't go wrong with any. For the first round, we got the Ube Bae, and it was amazing! False Idol is everything you want in a tiki bar, with a bit of speakeasy mixed in. There's no sign outside, and it is down a hallway of another restaurant. There is a hostess outside. I was alone, so I was able to grab a bar spot. When you walk in, it is everything you want in a tiki bar. The decor, the uniforms, and of course the rum. They have other spirits, but in true tiki fashion, this bar is very rum forward. The menu is extensive. Page after page of tropical drinks. Not all sweet, not all recognizable, but more options than you can try in a night. The service was great. The staff knows their stuff and are easy to chat with. I'm a tiki geek, and FI has been on my todo list since it opened, which means I've been missing out for ten years! I love Little Italy area but traffic and parking and getting there has been getting in the way, along with the need for reservations. I visited on a Thursday night, found easy (paid) parking nearby, and was able to get in when they opened with no reservation. Most of the other patrons were tiki geeks as well - one was choosing from their rum collection by name, two were comparing the cocktails to other spots I've been; the woman next to me was visiting from Wisconsin with False Idol on her list; and the guy next to her was sporting a coat with "Mai tai till I die" patches - if you know, you know! It's stalker than I expect but the ambiance is spot on, even the smell of the sea. Don't miss the bathroom where they are playing a recording of bad reviews. If you're a Yelper it's worth it. To say the cocktail menu is extensive would be an understatement, and each one has a colorful description. Many many selections here that you've never heard of before! It was happy hour (every hour I get to spend in a tiki bar is happy hour!) and they had several specials; I tried the Planter's Punch which was tip top my favorite, and the Chata-Lada which was milky cinnamon goodness. My server was Lamar, and he was great. I got a souvenir glass with him on it! I want to try everything on their list - it's a bound, illustrated book with side stories, though it was a little too dark to read. The Matchaaaaaaa-looooooo-hai! caught my eye - how could it not? Fruity, earthy, grassy, indeed. As a novelty seeker, I will need to visit more regularly and try some of the others. Three drinks was my fill, unless I move in within stumbling distance. If anything could get my review on the bathroom hallway recording (and I have to admit I wouldn't object!) it would be the lack of appetizers. Needless to say, we looked up tiki bars in San Diego when planning our trip and stumbled upon False Idol. This seemed like something right up my alley, so we booked a table and made our way over our first night in the city. False Idol is not visible from the street, rather the entrance is inside the restaurant Craft & Commerce. Even though its an entrance within another place, it's not really a speakeasy as it's pretty obvious that False Idol is there. Anyway, we checked in and were led to our table - immediately we were bombarded with AESTHETICS. Low lighting, lots of wood, color, water features - it was all there! They did an excellent job, probably one of the most well done tiki bars I've been to - wow. While there is a bar with stool seating, they also have tables scattered throughout the space - mainly along the walls. The menu is large, and is split into traditional tiki cocktails and ones that are newer creations from the team. There's a lot to choose from, both sections have a bountiful selection. Ultimately, we had two rounds - I had one from each section and both were delicious; smooth and tasty. We noticed they had some merch available so we picked up some because of course. Service was great, everyone was really friendly. Overall, False Idol was awesome - this was a highlight of my trip and somewhere I would return to next time I'm in SD. My wife and I celebrated our 8-year anniversary at False Idol and it was an amazing experience from start to finish. We showed up about 2 hours early for our reservation and although we initially had to stand, the staff quickly accommodated us with a table, which was incredibly thoughtful and set the tone for the night. The service was outstanding. The host kept checking in on us throughout the evening, and our waitress was awesome -- attentive, friendly, and genuinely cared that we enjoyed everything. She even swapped out a drink my wife didn't care for without any issue. This place is such an instant escape the moment you walk in. The atmosphere completely transports you somewhere else, and honestly, who couldn't use a place like that right now? We even left with some merch to remember such a special night. My only small nitpick is that some of the drinks didn't hit as hard for my personal taste, but that's probably because I make tiki drinks at home and have certain preferences. That said, the Mai Tai Reserve was hands down the best drink of the night -- absolutely incredible. At $32 it better be good... and it absolutely was worth it. Can't wait to come back. read more

This is a true speakeasy because I couldn't find any directions to get in until I digged through reviews lol I thought it was the huge hallway but that is just to the bathrooms for the speakeasy. False Idol is through the restaurant. I figured it out with the random host stand in the opposite front corner. The tables were full but they told us to wait at the bar until our table was ready. What she didn't mention is the bar fit like seven seats and twenty people were already standing next to it so there really was no room. We were able to order if we stand somewhere in the crowd. While we waited for a drink, they said a table was ready so we were sat for maybe five minutes before they came back to us and said that table was for someone else and we had to stand again. Like okay.... A couple by a barrel had saw what we weren't through and said the standing barrels were first come first served and said we could have theirs since they were pretty much done with the place too.
