I love speakeasies and this was one of the best. The hostess and bartender are super awesome! Amy is hilarious! I love how they laid or the menu. They have their signature drink on top of each page and then on the bottom are similar, more common drinks. Drinks are really good. They also have small bites. Overall a great and intimate experience and will def be coming back!
Been a few times but it's been a while and Henry, Amy, and Ben made us feel right at home again. This is one of our fave speakeasies because it really gives a speakeasy vibe-won't give away too much in case you've not been. But also easily bookable through OpenTable (we booked a 7pm slot about 30 minutes before). Two drink minimum with classics at $20 and specialties at $22. A few light bites but def better to just have drinks here and eat nearby. Also love the conversation cards they put on the table as an activity. All in all a solid spot and a fun spot for date night or a girls/boys night out.
Room 56 is located within the Moxy in downtown SD on the second floor. You pick up the red book and the hostess will be with you shortly. Once she opens the door you take a tight staircase down to the parlor room 56. Very intimate and holds true to a speakeasy feel. We were given complimentary champagne upon seating and a deck of cards that had questions on them. It really made great conversation while enjoying your drinks! The drinks were a hit or miss for myself. I think because the bartenders base the menu on their take of drinks aka also opposite of what the standard might be for that cocktail. However, I did enjoy the creativity and effort put into the cocktails. It made a great date night. Heads up reservations are required for the most part.

Amazing customer service! First time trying, (anytime I try new sushi restaurant I start at their California roll) it was amazing! To my surprise, fresh Crab, instead of imitation Crab!. everything was fresh, the restaurant was clean! And the customer service was phenomenal. (& I only got a to-go order. On the spot.) 10 out of 10!. can't wait to try the rest of the menu.
Room 56 at the Moxy is a 3 star speakeasy experience for me it's not terrible by any means but definitely not the vibe I was hoping for. I love a good speakeasy and the feeling of being transported somewhere else but this one felt more like a very small high end hotel lounge than a true speakeasy. It's stylish but it never really gave that "wow" or immersive speakeasy moment. On the positive side the cocktails were good they clearly have the mixology part down and the drinks were well balanced and thoughtfully made. The downside was the service which was surprisingly subpar for such a small space. Every time we ordered a round, it took about 25-30 minutes to get our drinks which really drags out the experience in not a great way. Also worth noting prices here are on the high end so be prepared to spend if you come through. Overall, cool to check out once if you're already at Moxy but as far as speakeasies go it felt a bit lackluster and not somewhere I'd rush back to.
Great cocktails. Extremely friendly service. Place was busy on a Tuesday due to a convention in town. Bar concept was good but I'd recommend some more thoughtful touches like nice garnish jars or rimming trays etc. Back bar seemed a little clustered. Possibly a better solution for syrups as opposed to be scattered around back bar. It takes away from the vibe and look. Would still Highly recommend for a good cocktail and cute date night
We got lucky enough on a Friday night to get a table here without a reservation. But I would definitely recommend you make one! Once you get called in, you go through a secret door and once inside, you walk down a set of spiral stairs where you'll then find the hidden speakeasy bar. It's dim, cozy, and intimate. Not sure if they do this all the time, but at our table were some still water and a tiny glass of champagne. They also gave us a set of question cards for a conversation starter, which was rather cool! We enjoyed this place a lot! Drinks were uniquely served in such eclectic style and they were pretty good.
Host Henry was super nice and helpful. Really enjoyed the drinks here. The drink menu was extensive and we went during their valentine special so the valentine menu that was offered was pretty good. Would def go back for the ambiance and great drinks
The experience and ambiance was amazing. The staff was incredible and friendly. I had the Kamboora which was pleasantly different. Just very expensive.

The speakeasy schtick may be over done. Dark and some of the menus require a cell phone light to read. But the cocktails and service are outstanding. The menu has an excellent list of classics and Room 56 signature versions. The bartender Henry was friendly, very knowledgeable, and made excellent drinks. I highly recommend Room 56. read more
Room 56 is an amazing speakeasy you could go to! The element of surprise is definitely there and it feels like this place should be kept secret in fact. Service here is amazing, the servers are very knowledgeable about their menu, everyone is very friendly and attentive. The vibes on the inside are immaculate, very upscale and intimate. The drinks are also good yet strong. It is on the pricier side however I didn't mind since the vibes of this speakeasy and drinks were equally as great. I'd definitely recommend! read more

Came here Comic Con weekend and was surprised they had late night reservations available! I was able to book for a party of 2 online at 10pm while we were eating at a restaurant nearby. Room 56 is a speakeasy within the Moxy Hotel in downtown. When you arrive you're instructed to pickup a red book to signal that you're there for the speakeasy. There are large wooden games like tic tac toe and connect four downstairs, and also since it was Comic Con weekend there were arcade games upstairs that were free to play. We didn't have to wait long before we were ushered inside and seated at the bar. Our bartender was Patrick and he was friendly and great company. They offered card games with questions to get to know each other. Patrick gave us a couple of little welcome spritzers and we ordered two drinks each. The first round was the Robe n' Slippers for me and the Autumn Bonfire for my boyfriend, the second round was the Aperol Showers Bring Elderflowers for me and the I'm Not Drinking Merlot for my boyfriend. We started with lighter drinks then our second order was heavier in taste. I absolutely loved the Robe n' Slippers because in general I don't really like the taste of alcohol. It was light, and had a refreshing watermelon creaminess to it. The Aperol Showers Bring Elderflowers was very floraly and still good, but I think I enjoyed the fruitiness of the watermelon better with my first drink. My boyfriend also really enjoyed his drinks, but they were too alcohol forward for my personal preference. That's why mine were served in tea cups for my dainty taste :P Amazing drinks, amazing service, and amazing ambiance! Great place for a date night and the drinks were also very reasonably costed! Highly recommend this speakeasy and honestly I feel like it has the best tasting cocktails out of all in SD!! read more

Great date experience! The hostess was adorable and added to the experience. Great service. Amazing cocktails. They bring you water and a little sip sparkling wine. The One Stiff Mexican Mocha was delicious. And they have fun conversation cards at the table. 100% will return and try the food. read more

Gaslamp has a speakeasy inside the Moxy Hotel called "Room 56", named after the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. The speakeasy is accessed through a hidden door in a bookcase (after you picked up a red book and led down a spiral staircase by a "Librarian" to a cocktail den). From the complimentary Prosecco shot to a deck of question cards, the speakeasy was inviting and had interesting mixed drinks like ones with red curry or lamb fat! The servers were attentive and welcoming. It was definitely a fun evening! read more
My friend made reservations online for Room 56 on a Friday night just around 7pm. Just a note, eat before or after this experience, as there are no food options! Old pictures and reviews show that they used to, but they are serving only drinks here for now. Each person must order $40 minimum of drinks and there is also gratuity included. Once you enter the Moxy lobby and check in near the bookshelf door, the hostess will walk you down a flight of narrow stairs to get to the speakeasy. The atmosphere was not too dark, cozy, and subtle. There were fun cards with questions on the tables, perfect for a date night or just getting to know someone! Almost every drink was crafted aesthetically, and service was great all around. Do take some time to find the area as they are strict on reservation times. My choices of drinks were all from the cocktails section, but my favorite was Audrey's Backyard. The drinks were tasty and each had a nice presentation. I appreciated the staff recommendations and loved everything I tried! read more

I loved this speakeasy. Walk up to the second floor and grab a red book and have a seat. We didn't have reservations, but put our name on the waitlist and got a text 3 hours later so we came back to try it. To start they bring over a glass of champagne. I got an espresso martini and my bf had the old fashion. The menu is unique and has their own version and the version you would typically see. They also brought a card game over for us, which I loved for date night. The inside is super cute and intimate. The drinks were very good and service was great. Loved the chocolate covered pretzels you get at the end too! Def recommend! read more

Booked a reservation on a Saturday night for three. This place is located inside of the Moxy hotel which has extremely trendy decor and a large bar in the lobby. We arrived early and sat at the bar for a drink. I had the Jay Gatsby, a gin based passion fruit flavored drink and it was delicious. They currently are making Valentine's Day inspired drinks and my friend ordered the "Lover"(Taylor Swift inspired). You enter 56 descending down into a basement like room. Dark accents are painted around a smoky atmosphere and it feels very sophisticated. All the drinks we had were delicious and I highly recommend the clover club. FYI, there is a 40 dollar minimum per person. read more
This was cool little speakeasy was inside the Moxy hotel. SERVICE: Our host was super friendly. Made a lot of jokes (my kinda host) and got us seated pretty quickly. She explained the menu well and got us on our way to our drinkies in no time at all. DRINKS: They offer a lot of cool drinks. My friend tried the Kookaburra. (Picture) and said it was great. We came here on a whim for a night cap, and it is definitely a place to check out. We entered through a secret bookshelf in the Moxy, let in by our mixologist Chris after ringing a secret doorbell. We entered a dark room and descended through a spiral metal staircase into a small intimate room that reminds you of a posh basement; we got a welcome Prosecco shot and Chris gave us the spiel on drinks. After taking some time to look through the many options of original drinks this speakeasy had to offer, we made our choices and were all happy with our drinks. Highly recommend the gardener. Service is a little on the slower side as there was only one person making the cocktails and these were not simple cocktails, mind you! That being said, heads-up that there is an auto 22% gratuity on top of each $22-25 cocktail. read more
This bar is definitely a speakeasy to the 9's. It all starts off with you looking for a hotel lobby and going up to their second floor lounge area. Make sure you pick up your red book and have a seat on the couch, you will then be approached by a hostess. The hostess will make sure that you had a reservation because they're pretty strict on that, and they will always make sure you're aware that they do not sell food and it is a two drink minimum. The drinks were good but expensive so expect to drop money there, but the ambience is cool, the staff is great and tentative, and it definitely made you feel like you were in a different place and not just in gaslamp overall, probably one of the more higher end speakeasies I've ever been to. read more
