The beignets were good and our brunch entrees were nicely prepared. Ambiance is nice with an open air concept. The only thing is parking is very difficult and the service times were slow.
There's a lot of hype around this place and I don't really know why after eating here. Our server was rude and the food tastes forever to come out. Another problem I have is that the menu literally says, "Substitutions or modifications are politely declined!" That is insane that they won't make accommodations for people. What if they have allergies? Let people enjoy the food how they want/like to. It's not your call. We started with the Beignets. These were very dry and tasted old. They serve the black sesame mascarpone and matcha cream in one dish, which stinks because the matcha cream is not good. I got the Duck & Waffle. The duck was easily the best thing here that we had and the passionfruit guava sauce (made in-house) was light and lovely. Unfortunately, my waffle came out cold and when I told my server, she said, with no emotion, "I'm sorry about that." Then, turned around and LEFT. They didn't fix my dish at all. It was insanely rude. My guy got the Latke Egg Benedict, which stunk of fish and tasted like old fish. We had to send it back for them to remake and it came out better the second time. Very concerning they would serve old salmon to their customers when you could smell it had gone bad. The latka wasn't too thick, which was nice, but the dish didn't have much flavor to it and wasn't anything special. The duck is the only good thing on the menu, but it is not worth dealing with the issues like rude staff and rotten fish.
Between Us is such a cute and trendy brunch spot in San Diego. We stopped by on a Saturday morning with our 2-year-old and didn't have reservations. Luckily, they were able to seat us at the large communal table near the entrance, which was totally fine. The place had a really fun, youthful vibe and was pretty busy with lots of younger groups. Since we had our toddler with us, we kept things pretty simple and shared the Two Eggs Your Way Breakfast and the Cornbread & Co, along with a Tiramisu Matcha Latte. I was really excited about the matcha since I saw quite a few people ordering it, but unfortunately it was probably my least favorite thing. The matcha flavor wasn't very strong and the drink tasted a little watery to me. The food was much better. Even though the breakfast was pretty basic, it was really good for sharing with a toddler. The toast with butter and jam and the crispy potatoes were definitely the stars. The fried chicken that came with the cornbread was also really tasty. Service was a little slow. It took about 15 minutes for our server to come by and take our drink and food order, and the food took a bit to come out after that. So I wouldn't necessarily come here if you're looking for a quick breakfast spot. It's definitely more of a sit-down, take-your-time kind of spot. This neighborhood is street parking, so plan accordingly. I'd also highly recommend making a reservation, especially on weekends, since it seems like this place can get pretty busy.
I came here because my friend has been here a few times and really likes it, so I was excited to finally try it. Unfortunately, I don't think I'd come back. First off, parking is a pain. You're lucky if you can find street parking, and since this place gets pretty busy, I'd recommend making a reservation. I ordered the Mushroom Chazuke with Poached Egg ($24) because my friend recommended it. Honestly, this is so not something I would normally order, but I figured I'd give it a try. It's definitely Japanese comfort food, but to me it was basically rice, mushrooms, and broth/stock with a poached egg... for $24. I just couldn't justify the price for what you actually get, and honestly felt like it was a waste of money. I also tried the Brûléed French Toast with Poached Pears and Cream Cheese. Unfortunately, a lot of the top was pretty burnt and tasted bitter. I'm not sure if that's intentional with the brûléed style, but the brunt parts were too bitter for my taste. Overall, it wasn't the best French toast I've had, and for $20 for just one slice, it was overpriced. For drinks, I had the Butterscotch Matcha Latte, which was okay but nothing memorable. My friend got the Yuzu-Ade with sparkling water and said it tasted pretty flat and wasn't sparkling enough. Overall, Between Us is basically brunch with a Japanese twist, which sounds right up my alley because I love both Japanese food and brunch food. Unfortunately, the food just didn't do it for me. Between the high prices, portions, and flavors, I didn't find anything that made me want to come back. Honestly, I probably should've just ordered the Duck & Waffle instead haha. That's the one thing I'm kinda kicking myself for not trying. Maybe that would've changed my mind, but based on what I had, I wouldn't return.
Soo good!! Cute little brunch spot perfect for a weekend bite. We made reservations for our party of 4 so were seated immediately. Our waitress/server was super sweet and gave us her recommendations and they were awesome. We started with the sweet beignets. They were light and airy - we liked the sesame over the matcha although they were both good. The mushroom appetizer was amazing and fried to perfection! The yuzu sauce and garlic crisps paired so well with it. The star of the show for me was the chazuke with grilled fish. It reminded me of the simple meals in Japan. I would definitely order it again. The butterscotch matcha latte was sooo good too. I ordered that with regular milk. I will come back in the future with my family!
Food: 9.5/10 Service: 9/10 Ambiance: 9/10 between us has always been somewhere ive been wa to go to, but I've been to in San Diego. Find you I'm a really big brunch person. For reference, my favorite place is sugar and scribe. there's a mushroom rice dish and it was my favorite. I love how all their dishes weren't salty and honestly everything we got fit my taste profile. All my friends got matchas and a black sesame latte. Those were really good as well as someone who loves Matcha, it really hit the spot so I will most definitely be coming back. We also got the eggs Benedict and the beignets. Everything was so yummy.
Super cute brunch spot in North Park, and we were glad we got a reservation because seems like this place can have quite a wait. Parking can also be challenging around here. The dishes seem to be inspired by other ethnic cuisines, but hey, they work! I like that they offer complementary sparkling water as an option, which was very refreshing with the recent heat wave. I also got a sparkling Yuzu-ade and was pleasantly surprised at how fresh the Yuzu flavor tasted without having an artificial aftertaste linger in my mouth. We got the beignets and cornbread for the table to share. The beignets were served with a matcha and sesame whipped dip, and I enjoyed the matcha dip better but both were flavorful. The cornbread was only one piece and came with a piece of fried chicken, which was less ideal to share between 8 girls. Maybe because I didn't get much of a bite with the cornbread , but I preferred the beignets more. For my main dish, I got the mushroom chazuke because I was craving something brothy. They serve the broth on the side so you can control how much broth you want to pour over the rice. This was very tasty and had a very earthy and umami flavor from the different types of mushrooms. I wasn't a fan of the garlic chips on top of the rice and picked them out. It did become rather overwhelming halfway into the meal, so I might recommend sharing this and another item to break up the flavors. I was also considering the hamburger curry, but after trying my friend's, it was nothing to write home about. Overall, the ambience and service were great, food was tasty, and I would return to try some of the other items on the menu in the future.
Searched up brunch spots and Between Us was the first place that came up, so we decided to give it a try. TLDR: terrible host We were told they needed to clean a table for our party of 2, so we waited a bit before being seated. As we walked to our table, I noticed there were plenty of open 2 tops, but the host with silver/purple hair sat us right next to a group of 5. It felt cramped, and the group was talking so loudly that I could barely hear myself think. We asked the host if we could move to one of the open tables for more space but it seemed like such a big deal, he had a terrible attitude. He said that a party was going to be sat at the one he was setting up... but the others remained open?? They ended up seating the incoming party at a completely different table. By the end of our meal, the tables we asked about were still unoccupied. What made it even more frustrating was watching another party of 2 come in and get the option of choosing any of the open tables, which was never offered to us. We ordered the beignets, duck & waffle, latke egg benedict, yuzuade, and matcha latte tiramisu. They were out of the latke, so they substituted it with a waffle. The yuzu hollandaise was extremely sour and tasted off, almost like it had gone bad, and the texture was really mushy. The matcha latte tiramisu was also such a letdown. It tasted like water even after I mixed in the foam, so I asked our server to take it off the bill. We ended up spending $76 for food that was just okay and service that was pretty disappointing. I wouldn't waste my time coming back, especially considering how rude and difficult the staff made a simple request to move tables feel. I had high hopes after seeing all the other reviews, but unfortunately, my experience didn't live up to them.
All of the food here was great! Would definitely add the steak to the curry hamburger. The matcha latte tiramisu was just okay, the matcha was watery. It's North Park, so parking can be tough. I went without reservations, which l'll never do again because the expected wait for 2 people was 1 hour. I got lucky when one of their reservations cancelled and I got seated in 10 mins.
Visit July 2026 Bougie breakfast time lol! Invited by some family members who like this place a lot. Consider me sold. Food: Beignets-fluffy, come out hot, though not evenly sugared. I watched the table carefully pick around this one lone barely sugared piece. Ngl, I like the ones at Disneyland better. Both me and a daughter ordered the Chunky Avocado Toast with a poached egg, we both felt that the toast was a little tough. Good avocado spread and the egg oozed well. I tried their house hot sauce with it but wasn't too impressed with it. I also ordered a side of the House Potatoes. These were awesome. Crisp outside but not over done , well seasoned. Totally recommend. Wife ordered the Mushroom Chazuke. Mix of seasonal mushrooms. She liked it a lot. Tastes some of the mushrooms. Earthy but not overbearingly so. The wild rice and poached egg made for a pretty good mix. Other daughter got the Curry Hamburg. She likes her curry, especially Japanese curry. While she did not get transported to Tokyo she did give it a thumbs up. This place is pretty busy and I was fairly impressed with the attentiveness of our waitress. Waters kept full which was handy as it was a bit hot and my car was a good walk away. Would like to visit again and try other menu items.
Amazing! This is a very dog friendly restaurant! Dogs can sit inside. The food is really good. We ordered the crispy chicken sandwich and curry hamburg. The crispy chicken was moist and crispy! The curry Hamburg is so good! Portions are big too. Definitely returning try the mushroom dish!
Really cute brunch place in North Park. I got the Pomelo salad to share and curry hamburg. Salad was refreshing. I enjoyed the curry hamburg, and it was a big portion that filled me up quick. We also shared the beignets and it came with black sesame/matcha dip. They were light and fluffy and paired well with the dips. Best eaten fresh as they cool down pretty quick. For drinks, I got the Matcha Tiramisu Latte and Matcha Yuzu Mimosa. The latte was more matcha. I didn't really taste any tiramisu in my drink, but the matcha was good. It definitely is on the low sweet. The mimosa was good as well. At first, wasn't sure if the flavor would pair well as a mimosa, but it was good! The matcha and yuzu blend well. Someone else had a yuzu mimosa, but it too sour for my taste. The yuzu with the matcha definitely helps reduce the citrus sour taste. Service was friendly and fast. Since it was a busy Sunday, they already explained in advance that food might take longer to come out, but it didn't feel very long. When I went, we had a live musician playing. Personally for me, it was a bit loud, so it was hard to hear everyone at my table. But, Im sure other people appreciated and enjoyed the live music. I just prefer quieter environments, and that's my personal taste. I would be willing to come back for a special occasion again.
Cute spot! Came on a Fri for lunch at 11:30. We had made reservations but we probably could have gotten seated right away even though the place was decently busy. The space is also much larger than I thought it'd be. They have tables for larger groups and smaller two person tables. I got the simple toast and made it "extraordinary" (matcha cream and berries). Also added a side of chicken patties. My friend got the burger and beignets. The toast was delicious!! It's a housemade shokupan that was perfectly fluffy and had a nice buttery taste. The matcha cream was really light and the berries were good. The chicken patties you could tell we're homemade and had a light sweetness to them. Very good. I think the only downside was the beignets. If you've had them in new Orleans these were a sad comparison. The dough didn't have that much flavor and the inside texture was light but the outside was a dry, crusty texture. The matcha and black sesame dip it came with was nice though. Service was a little haphazard but friendly. I'd come back and try out some other items.

Visiting out of town and my daughter wanted to have beignets before we went back home. Found this spot that was dog friendly. They had limited seating outdoors. Next time I'll prefer to sit at the counter. Service was great as our server made my daughter feel special for her birthday. A lot of unique items on the menu. I went with their special latke Benedict which was delicious as enjoyed having potatoes instead of bread as the base. I would definitely like to come back and try other items on their menu. read more

In north park, you'll find street parking, and many eateries nearby. There's typically always street parking near Vons, you just have to walk a few blocks. It's preferred to have a reservation as there may be a wait. If you want to try the beignets, come early, they run out, they are tasty and I love the yummy dips (matcha and black sesame) it comes with. Asian/American Fusion brunch place is a healthier option than a full American brunch. The place is bright. Drinks are not too sweet, I would have actually liked more sweetness in their matcha & black sesame drinks. All the brunch items are pretty unique and tasty. There was really no entree I did not enjoy. The must have every time I come is probably the Fried Maitake. read more

Notty was an absolute gem. Very friendly and accomodating! Food was delicious! Highly recommend the beignet, they are delish! Get then in the morning while you can! I also do recommend eating the latke first before any other food. The yuzu in it is quite delicate, will get masked by other dishes :) read more
Friend recommended this place so in we went~ got there around got there around 12:30 ish? It was around a 10-20min wait which wasn't too bad at all! **FOOD Shashuka $24 Tomato-y with eggs, zucchini and cheese was really really good! Def would order this dish again! Mushroom Chazuke $20 Variety of mushroom with rice and garlic chips! It was good especially with the mushroom broth poured in! Not too salty which is great! Curry Hamburg $20 Rice on the bottom with a hamburger patty and egg on top surrounded by curry. Not sure what it was but the curry tasted too salty and did not pair well with the rice and egg :( Beignets $12 They were nice and fluffy and not too too sweet but they weren't as airy as I thought they'd be; as in there's more bread than expected. The dips were flavored black sesame and matcha which we LOVED! **PEOPLE Servers were all courteous and efficient with service :) they did forget to give us a bag for our leftovers but luckily the host gave us one **VIBE This place has a chill beach vibe with low lighting which gives off a contemporary romantic feel as well Overall: I think I'm for a yes to come back but I don't think I would voluntarily mention this place as it is on the expensive side and pretty far out from my friend's house read more
Open lighting ambiance and a really cute Japanese inspired brunch spot. Loved the mushroom ochazuke. Loved the Japanese inspired flavors in the brunch. Although it's a little pricey for around 23 dollars per plate the portions are big and you can definitely take it home. The broth for the mushroom ochazuke was umami and rich yet light. I loved the crunch and texture of the tempura crisps on the ochazuke. It was a heart warming meal which didn't make me groggy. I also got to try the fried chicken and latke and the latke was perfectly crispy with the smoked salmon. The fried chicken was leaking juice and super flavorful. I will definitely come back in I'm in the area. Definitely check this place out for brunch! read more
I tried to visit Between Us on a weekend for lunch and the place had a line out the door. Taking advantage of my no longer being employed I tried 9:30am on Wednesday and there was parking across the street and no line. I tried the duck confit with waffle and breakfast sausage on the side. Waffle had a thin crispy outer layer while the inside was fluffy. Loved the waffle flavor and the sweetness from the sprinkled on powdered sugar. Duck confit had crispy skin and tender duck. I did not like the garlic bits but they were easily brushed off. Duck was delicious. Tied for my favorite duck confit in town with West End Bar. Side of breakfast sausage had a nice snap to the casing. Pork was tender and I loved the savory pork flavor. Better than any grocery store sausage I have tried so far. Complimentary soda water was cold and refreshing. Staff was nice and efficient. Between Us is a great spot to relax and enjoy a delicious breakfast. 2nd visit I tried a classic burger with fries. Fries were crispy on the outside and I liked the fried potato flavor. Beef was tender and I enjoyed the high quality beef they used. Butter lettuce was fresh and crisp. I prefer it to iceberg lettuce lots of places use. Tomato were fresh and juicy. Bacon was crunchy and had a nice smoky and savory flavor. Very good burger. Loved the bottle of complimentary soda water. Servers were nice and efficient. read more

First of all, the vibe of this place is so nice. Relaxing but also the decor just made it seem more elegant. Love the idea of having the open garage door in the front to let the breeze in. Perfect for the weather right now where it's just enough breeze to keep you cool. The food was delicious! I was worried that the curry may be too sweet but it was actually not too sweet at all! It went perfectly with the mushroom rice! We also got the beignets with a matcha and black sesame spread and the beignets were nice and fluffy. The service was fast and friendly and we just overall had a great experience here. read more

This review is mainly reflective on the service and how long it took for our food to come out. We originally planned on going to Morning Glory for brunch but it was a 2 hour wait so we decided to come here instead. We only had to wait 30 minutes to be seated which was a lot better than 2 hours. Little did we know, it would take a whole hour for us to get our food. We honestly could've waited the 2 hours for Morning Glory and gotten our food at the same time if not earlier. The restaurant wasn't packed with customers but they were definitely short staffed or something because there were two couples sitting next to us who were also waiting for their food. One couple was ready to leave when their food came out at that exact moment. The servers did apologize and told us that they were having issues with the kitchen. They also offered us all free orange juice. However, if they knew they were having issues with the kitchen then they should've told us earlier before we got seated so people could go elsewhere rather than waiting an hour for their food. Overall, service here was very poor. In terms of food, it was unfortunately pretty good but not worth the wait. I really liked the simple toast with matcha cream on top as well as the curry hamburg. My friend ordered the shakshuka (not pictured because it came last and everyone just wanted to eat at that point) which was also pretty good. For the avocado toast, the toast was too hard so I wouldn't recommend it. We also ordered a yuzu and matcha yuzu mimosa. Both tasted like yuzu. The matcha yuzu one was basically a green yuzu mimosa. They have a vero water purification system so their water was really good lol. read more

I have been wanting to go to Between Us, and the main reason for that is because of the beignets with matcha and black sesame cream. Of course, when I went this past weekend, they did not have anymore! So I would definitely suggest to arrive before noon on the weekend. Otherwise, one of the workers did tell me it would be easier to get the on a weekday. Enough about beignets. There was no wait when my friend and I went (on a Saturday, where there are no reservations). At first, we were seated at the "bar," then some tables opened up and I asked for us to move. Now for the food that we were able to order! I ordered the iced matcha latte, and it was not too sweet, which was perfect. My friend got the yuzu sparkling drink with mango puree -- I tried it and it was very refreshing for how warm it was! The fried maitake came with a yuzu aioli and it was a 1000/10. The umami flavor was so rich, balanced with the citrus of the aioli and chili crunch for hint of spice. Just writing about it makes me miss it. The shakshuka came with halibut, and I could do without the halibut. Or if the halibut was on the side/on top because the super oily and acidic flavor profile mixed with the fish was not very pleasant. I enjoyed putting the egg on the bread it came with, though. My friend got the cornbread & co, which is cornbread with a piece of fried chicken. This dish is part of the shareable/appetizer section, but it's pretty sizable. She said the chicken was not fully fried and had a lot of fat pieces of skin at the end of the meal. The pancake she got was really delicious though! Shoutout to the Filipino (?) dude working that was wearing an Appa shirt. He had shoulder length hair that was semi-dyed. He was lovely to have conversation with and attentive! read more
We had a reservation for 10 am on a Sunday and were seated once we arrived. It is super cute and aesthetic inside and surprisingly roomy with lots of tables. Service was quick and friendly and checked on us often. Our server brought us extra plates and bowls when we said we were gonna share our dishes which I thought was super thoughtful. -Beignets (5/5): came specifically for their popular beignets and they did not disappoint! They were hot, fresh, nicely soft and chewy. Paired with the matcha cream, it was delicious as the cream was nicely creamy and thick. I'm not the biggest fan of black sesame so it was nutty and just okay to me -Tiramisu latte (4/5): pretty good and strong as I could taste the matcha! Couldn't really taste the tiramisu and it needed more sweetness so we asked for extra simple syrup, pretty pricey for the size -Curry hamburg (4/5): very savory and meaty, the beef patty was thick and flavorful, the curry was well seasoned but had a little kick, the eggs were soft and fluffy -House potatoes (4/5): nicely crispy, a bit plain to me but was a nice balance to the savory curry hamburg When we left, there were lots of people waiting outside so I definitely recommend making a reservation. Made a reservation for brunch Sunday 10AM and we were seated once we arrived. The interior is so cute and homey, and surprisingly large! It wasn't too busy inside but there was a lot of people waiting outside when we left, so recommend making a reservation (I made it through Toast). Service was very friendly and our server checked on us often. I would definitely come back to get their beignets and matcha again! Beignets (5/5): we specifically came here to their signature beignets, and they live up to the HYPE! They came out super hot, fresh, and pillowy soft. The matcha dipping cream was so good and thick, I didn't care for the black sesame cream as I'm not a fan but it was decent Tiramisu matcha latte (4.5/5): nice and strong, I could taste the matcha! It did need some sweetness so we asked for extra syrup on the side. Couldn't taste much tiramisu but I really enjoyed it overall. Wish it was a bigger size Curry hamburg (4/5): very savory and lots of beef and rice. After seeing all the great reviews, we had to try this place and it did not disappoint. It's a great brunch spot with really friendly staff. We ordered the US fried rice and the breakfast tartine. Portions were big and both dishes were really tasty, though the rice was a little mushy. They also have a good variety of beers on tap for dinner, so we'd come back to try that next time. Definitely be ready for a food coma after eating here. read more
Been on my to try list for a while, but North Park parking makes it so difficult. Finally came on a Saturday morning about 15minutes after opening the place was already packed. There were just 2 tables left outside and got seated. The beignets are limited quantity per day and they have 2 kinds (sweet or savory). Of course had to go with the sweet! Comes with black sesame mascapone and matcha cream. The black sesame stood out more and it'll be great if we can just pick 1 instead of having both (unless you want to try both). There were many dishes I wanted to try, but ended up ordering duck & waffle. It may look like it's a small portion, but it's filling as duck meat tends to be on the heavier side. Waffle tasted average, but the duck is the star of the dish. How is it SO tender? The skin was crispy too! I was not a fan of the black sesame latte. It was not sweet at all, not a single drop of sweetness. Will be back to hopefully sit inside because I was missing the vibe by sitting on the sidewalk. read more
Date of visit: 3/25/26 Food: 6/10 Ambiance: 7/10 Service/ 2/10 I might've not given the food a fair shot because I feel like I should've gotten something more unique and exclusive to Between Us. The U.S. Fried Rice was bland. The rice was flavored with tomato (I believe), and the tornado egg was nice and soft. I chicken was flavorless though. I had to constantly reach for the sausage and bacon for some flavor. The beignets were great! They were pillowy and bouncy, paired with matcha and oreo(?) custard. The ambiance was fresh and young, it was just a tad hot because it was letting in the heat from the outside. The service was my worst gripe. Upon getting seated, we had a few servers tending to us. The server getting our order was just beyond unwelcoming. It felt more sassy and I felt like I was burdening her by being there. Not once were we smiled to. I work in restaurants and service, so I tend to be lenient and understanding, but our service was just so bad that it was almost unbearable. I saw her also ignore customers coming to pick up orders as well. Other servers were all good, and even problem solved an issue we had with our food. I'm disappointed. May or not return to have some coffee and beignets, but maybe if I'm in the mood to deal with snubby service. read more

Tip - make reservations via google! AND have your party ready with you to get seated. You can also come in for drinks at the counter too to reduce the crowd wait. Very cute spot to catch up with friends for brunch. Love to see the relationship Between Us has made among the community, connecting beloved SD businesses in their quality ingredients. The live music added greatly to our brunch experience as well! Our table ordered 4 matcha drinks (delicious, although one was forgotten at first). Beignets came quickly and the matcha/black sesame cream was light and delicious. Although my husband and I enjoyed the shakshuka and duck/waffle, we would opt to try something new for next time. read more
I came her for brunch with a friend a few days ago, and we were feeling adventurous! While we usually opt for the sweet beignets, we instead went for the savory ones! I'm not usually a mushroom girlie, but I actually quite enjoyed the mushroom dip that they had, and I would recommend this if you, too, are feeling adventurous! I ordered the pancakes with maple syrup. They were good, not particularly brag worthy, but they were fine. My friend got a mushroom and rice dish that she really liked though. read more
This brunch spot is just around the corner from my apartment and I think it's become my new favorite brunch spot. It sits on the corner of 30th and Polk in North Park and has a nice view of the street, which is good for people watching. Love the decor and furniture, like a nice mid century modern look with bright colors to match. I've been a few times now, mainly during the week for brunch as I've seen it quite busy on the weekends. Nice place to catch up with friends or even family/ group as they can accommodate. Staff is always really friendly and attentive, which I appreciate. As for the food, I've ordered the following - latke egg benedict - it was light and fresh, but I will say, the potato latke was a little too crispy and maybe a little too burned for my taste. Otherwise, it was really good and the flavors all complimented each other - side of 2 eggs - I added for extra protein - mushroom rice - a nice add if you are a rice lover and it had a nice light mushroom flavor to it - mushroom toast added poached egg - this is my go to as I live a savory yet fresh brunch. The ricotta spread pairs well with a good portion of mushrooms and fresh herbs and green lightly tossed in a vinegary dressing. Highly recommend! Drinks - I've only ever ordered their ice matchas, one with strawberry purée and one with mango purée. It's made fresh and the matcha is nice and creamy. Not to mention instagramable. Between Us is a great new brunch spot in North Park with a fun menu and a cozy atmosphere. The owners are the same as Thai Time across the street, and they were incredibly kind and welcoming during our visit. We went shortly after they opened, so it was packed--we ended up waiting about an hour for a table, and service was a little slow at first. Since it was their soft opening, I'm hoping things have gotten smoother since then. The food was good overall. Beignets were sooo good! The steak in the shakshuka was cooked well, and while I enjoyed my curry, it was a little sweeter than I expected. There were also a few flies inside since all the windows were open, but nothing too major. Parking is about what you'd expect for North Park--not impossible, but it can take some patience. Overall, I'd definitely come back. The food was enjoyable, the owners were wonderful, and I think this spot has a lot of potential as they continue to settle in. read more
Came here for brunch after looking for a new place. Didn't have a wait on a monday morning. They had matcha and hojicha lattes-- tried their black sesame latte with a hojicha shot and my bf had the tiramisú matcha latte. Gave between us another try since my friend insisted and I'm glad I did! This time we ordered the shakshuka, latke egg Benedict, and sweet beignets and were not disappointed! Shakshuka: Catch of the day fish in tomato-chili sauce with Boursin cheese, fennel, eggs, zucchini, and yellow squash, served with house-baked focaccia. SO GOOD! My friend said she gets this everytime and is never dissapointed and I would definitely come back for this! The tomato chili sauce has the perfect flavor and slight hint of spice that keeps you wanting to eat more. The bread is deliciously crispy and perfect for dipping into the sauce. This dish is also super filling with the fish and eggs, ended up having to take some of it home! Latke egg Benedict: Potato pancake, smoked salmon, soft-poached egg, pickled shallots, avocado, mustard seeds, yuzu hollandaise. Also SO GOOD! I love the latke base instead of the traditional English muffin, crunchy potato pancake perfection, paired with the smoked salmon, soft packed egg, and YUZU hollandaise sauce this was a dream. My friend who ordered this actually isn't normally a fan of hollandaise sauce but she loveddd this yuzu hollandaise! I would definitely come back for this too! Beignets: offered with sweet or savory dipping sauce option. We chose to get the sweet matcha and sesame cream dipping option this time. Considering how the other "bread/pastry" items (waffle and cookie crumbs french toast) I had here were so dryyyy the last time I came here I had really low expectations but these were actually moist and fluffy and delicious! Would get these again! I came on a weekend this time, we called and made reservations in advance and I would definitely recommend doing this for the weekend since it was PACKED when we went and when we tried to change the time we were told they were booked from 9-12 so book reservations early if you can! Service was p good, the food actually came out hot this time compared to last time I was here the food came out cold even though it was less busy. We did have to wait a bit long for the food but given how packed the place was that's to be expected. I definitely prefer the seating at the front of the restaurant better than the back. We were sat in the tables in the back this time and it just seemed darker and not as bright as you'd expect a brunch spot to be. It kinda gave bar vibes in the back and interestingly enough they were playing law and order on the tv at 9:30am on a Saturday haha. Overall, I would come back to between us! I would probably just stick to the items we got this time though given that my last experience with the duck & waffles and cookie crumble French toast and tiramisu matcha was so baddd. I came with some girlfriends for a Saturday brunch date. Pros: - We ordered sweet beignets which comes with matcha and black sesame cream, shaksoukas and smoked salmon egg benedict. Everything tasted delicious! Great portion too. - You can make reservation in advance so there was really no wait for us, but we did get seated at 9:30AM. - Parking can be difficult. I didn't realize it's paid parking on the Main Street so I got a parking ticket... Our party of 4 ate here for Sunday brunch. We didn't have a reservation so we waited about 30 minutes to snag a table. I recommend making reservations ahead of time. Between Us is located in North Park with no dedicated parking lot-- give yourself extra time to look for street parking. Vibes: All the tables are technically indoor but the large open doors/windows gave a patio feel to the tables in the outskirts. Unfortunately we got seated towards the back where there was less sunlight. There were many 2-4 person tables, some bar seating, and a big table by the entrance that could fit a party of 8. Food: -Beignets ($12): comes with 5 pieces served with black sesame mascarpone and matcha cream. They're limited quantity so we ordered one for the table right away. The beignets weren't anything special but the creams were unique and tasted good. -Bacon Scone ($11): also limited quantity and only available on the weekends. Two scones served with salted yolk butter and raspberry chili preserves on the side. I enjoyed the consistency of the scones and the dips. -Cookie Crunch French Toast ($17): the server asked if we wanted the blueberry or banana brûlée. She recommended the banana brûlée, which I didn't know was an extra $3. It was honestly alright and could've done without paying the extra for the banana. Wouldn't get again. -Mushroom Chazuke ($20) + add poached egg ($4): a variety of mushrooms served with rice and garlic chips. The mushroom broth is poured in the bowl. It was a unique dish that I enjoyed. The serving was big enough for me take home half. Overall: I enjoyed the vibes and location of the place. Hubs & I did a walk in for brunch and the staff was so accommodating to our little love & doggie. We were so impressed with the menu and wanted to try so many things but ultimately decided on the Mushroom Chazuke and the Shashuka. The mushroom chazuke was so umami and the bread that it comes with was so perfectly baked. Crispy on the outside, softer in the middle. Our baby LOVES bread and she was loving it - so much that we asked to order some more bread and a kind staff just gave her another serving. Amazing customer service! I also love shashuka for breakfast and found it so interesting that Between Us adds fish to it! It was so good, would definitely get it again. Honestly, I'd get both dishes again but there were so many other good things on the menu, we'd have to try something else. So many people ordered beignets but we weren't going to be able to finish them, so I'm definitely coming back with some friends and getting beignets next time. We got lucky with our table. So many people came in after, mixed walk ins and with reservations. While the place was a lot bigger than I thought, the restaurant was filled by the time we left. read more
I was so excited to hear about this restaurant opening, and it lived up to the hype and expectations. I got the curry hamburg, the matcha tiramisu latte, and the beignets. The rice of the curry hamburg was perfect and not too soggy or hard. The seasoning of the curry sauce was excellent as well and had just a little bit of spice to bring out the flavor. The matcha tiramisu was unique and well made. The beignets were my favorite. They were not too sweet, and I loved the matcha and black sesame creams. They were the best I've had outside of New Orleans. The restaurant is small and intimate. I would recommend getting a reservation because it's busy and popular. It's a Saturday afternoon less than an hour before the restaurant close and I was able to be seated immediately. There is ample seating (bar, main, and outdoor) in the establishment. Neutral, modern decor. My server came quickly to take my order. Unfortunately, there were out of my initial entree choice which was Curry Hamburger. I order the Steak and Eggs. Eggs over easy, steak cooked medium, the only option for toast is sourdough. I decided not order a beverage during the experience, however, I saw many matcha ordered. I would have an order a matcha with the curry. Personally, I don't believe the matcha would pair well with the steak, and the server didn't recommend any beverage. I was provided with water. Shortly after my food was delivered. My plate was a nice presentation. The steak is of a good quality, cooked very well, and seasoned properly. It one of my top steak brunch experiences. The eggs were well cooked. The potatoes were crisp and lightly seasoned. I enjoyed the jam and whipped butter on my sourdough toast. My steak got cold quickly because I sat at the windiest table in the restaurant so I only ate half of it. I did ask if the large windows can be closed and the staff did obliged. The service wasn't anything special. It was order your meal, deliver meal and accompaniments, to-go box (which took three tries, hahaha), pay for meal. read more

I absolutely love Between Us! We were here for brunch on a Sunday. We came here early, around 930 and the place was already packed! There is street parking only, so plan ahead if you are here later in the day. We are lucky to get seated right the way once our whole party got there. The service was excellent! The restaurant is beautifully decorated with warm wood panels, yet has the modern vibe. The menu is not your typical American brunch menu. It's Japanese fusion brunch!!! Many of the items on the menu have Japanese cuisine elements, like matcha, mushrooms, rice. We started with drinks, and were very impressed by their iced matcha latte and interesting hojita latte. Their Beignets is a must try! They came out piping hot and so delicious. All the plates were amazing! I love my mushrooms toast, as well the pomelo salad with grilled chicken. The crispy mushroom rice bowl was filled with mushroom flavors. Definitely recommend it for all mushroom lovers. Overall, I can't believe this is our first time here! We will be back for their dinner and more brunch visits! read more
After my initial failure to secure beignets, I was on a mission to obtain them when I had errands to run in North Park. Street parking both free and paid was still extremely difficult to find during late weekday afternoon. Because of this, I ordered takeout and brought it home. Beignets - I didn't eat these until 1-2 hours later and they were easily the best beignets I've ever had outside of Louisiana. The dough is dense but airy and has a nice soft chewy texture with a slight crispy exterior. The black sesame and matcha creams were also so good and went well together. Overall not too sweet. I bet they would've even been better hot. Duck and waffle - this dish was okay for us. The waffle wasn't anything special. It was a dense waffle and not really fluffy. For the price I would expect more waffle or a bigger waffle. The duck was cooked well though. Side of fried chicken - this was solid and a good piece of chicken Hot black sesame latte - I was really surprised when I picked it up and it only fills half of the cup. Is this only 4-8oz? It's okay though because the black sesame fell to the bottom an was so thick that when I added more liquid and stirred, the drink was good. It had very strong lovely black sesame flavor. The food pickup process was easy and everything was packaged thoughtfully and neatly. read more

Food was awesome! We loved everything from the beignets to the mushroom rice BUT since we didn't have reservations on a Sunday morning we waited almost an hour. That's not the problem, we waited by the front door and can hear everything happening. Three guys walked in with no reservations and were seated within a few minutes by the window. There were also three in my party and by then have been waiting for at least 35 minutes. My question was why weren't we seated first??? Those 3 guys didn't have reservations either, whatever, I didn't want to make a scene so I just let it go. read more
I've had Between Us on my Yelp to-try list for YEARS but the parking situation in North Park always scared me. Recently, when a friend was in town, I finally committed to trying this brunch spot with them! We made plans last minute so were unfortunately unable to make reservations. We came around 11am on a Friday and there was no line when I joined, though a queue formed right behind me. I got there before my friends (rare North Park parking luck) and the friendly staff allowed me to claim a table and wait for them. The shop is gorgeous with lots of wooden elements and big, open air windows. The overall vibe is clean and airy, and there are cute flower decorations on each table. Service was friendly and while they aren't beating any speed records, food came out in a reasonable timeframe. My thoughts below: Mango matcha latte: This was smaller than I expected. It costs $1 extra for the seasonal fruit puree and they really give you your money's worth when you get it. Before I gave the drink a good stir, I was worried that the fruit would overpower the matcha as the drink looked rather pale. However, as I stirred, the milkiness bloomed into one of the most richly green matchas I've seen in a while!! Each sip is rich with not-too-sweet Mango puree, tempered by the earthiness of the matcha. Wow, what an excellent matcha latte! Beignets: These sell out so I was very relieved when our server said they were still available. They have a sweet and a savory version, and we opted for the sweet. It comes with 5 beignets and black sesame + matcha cream spreads. The beignets were lighter and fluffier than donuts with a slightly yeastier taste. The outside had structure while the inside was super soft. Perhaps I overhyped them in my head but by no means were they bad. I really loved how flavorful both cream spreads were, and they were necessary for proper enjoyment of these fried treats. Duck and waffle: This was a crispy duck leg served atop a waffle with a guava sauce on the side, likely a riff on the popular citrus/berry pairings of French cooking tradition, in the shape of the classic southern fried chicken and waffles. The duck was perfectly tender and the skin was well-seasoned, and the waffle was crispy. The guava sauce was divisive with my table but I liked it! The floral funk of guava brightened up the richer, earthy duck and the waffle benefited from the presence of both flavors. Mushroom Chazuke: Mushrooms and rice served with a light, bonito-based broth and various garnishes and crispies on top. This was incredibly flavorful from the variety of mushrooms and the fish broth. The mushrooms were perfectly crisped and the rice had a nice chew. Flavorful yet soothing interlude from the more adventurous or bold flavors of the rest of our dishes. Shakshuka with fish: This was the undisputed hit with my party. The fish was a flaky white fish, cooked perfectly fork-tender. The dish hit the perfect balance of salt, sugar, and acid with a dash of flavorful fats from the Boursin cheese swirled in. Pop a soft spoonful atop the crispy bread it comes with, and the taste and feel in your mouth are just indescribably good in the way that excellent dishes are. We scraped this dish CLEAN with a quickness. Genuinely one of the best breakfast dishes I have ever tried, and I will definitely be experimenting with adding fish to my shakshuka at home now. While Between Us is on the pricier side and their portion sizes aren't crazy, they are definitely priced in the brunch range. Smaller plates just means more stomach space to try more of their amazing menu! It was frankly agonizing trying to decide what to order, and there are probably two meals worth of dishes left off our table. Casual, open spot with prices on the higher side, so I'd recommend checking reviews before ordering. Some dishes are excellent, while others aren't quite worth the price. For brunch, the fried maitake was a great appetizer, and the mushroom chazuke was sooo good--10/10! The beignets were okay... the matcha flavor was weak, but the black sesame cream was delicious. They've also started serving dinner, so we came back to try a few more dishes: the clay pot crab rice was rich and full of umami--good for two if you're not too hungry. The pork belly sandwich was just okay and needed more seasoning. The hojicha Basque cheesecake was 10/10! Intense hojicha flavor, perfect texture and sweetness. A must if you like hojicha. Service was great both times. The portable fly fans helped, but hopefully they find a permanent solution for the flies. read more
I had to get a dish with tornado eggs, after watching so many videos of them online. I opted for the U.S. fried rice. It did not disappoint! The eggs were perfectly cooked with a slightly wet top and beautiful swirls. The tomato fried rice was superb--with the perfect amount of sweetness and tang. The accompanying meats were all good, especially the sausage. The fried chicken was kinda overkill, but made for nice leftovers. Beignets aren't really my thing, but they were perfectly cooked and the two creams were tasty. My friend's fried chicken sandwich was huge and the fries looked great. Service was very good. I'm eager to come back, but it will be hard to not get the U.S. fried rice again. read more

We stopped by at Between Us for brunch and it was an alright overall experience. The hit of the meal was the curry Hamburg - basically a Japanese curry loco moco mash up. The sauce was delicious and we mopped this dish up. The duck and waffle was odd - although the duck was cooked well the accompanying syrup included guava which we were initially intrigued with but ultimately disappointed by. The dish would have been better with just straight up plain maple syrup. The beignets were fluffy but I felt that the dip itself was a little lacking. The matcha half had good texture but lacked flavor, and the black sesame half had good flavor but was a little "firm" and difficult to dip. Service was alright. Our server was straight to the point and not warm with us. read more
Between Us is the epitome of brunch. Great service, great vibes, nice brunch food. I give it a high rating for the overall package. They decorated for the holidays in December so gave a nice festive experience. It's downtown so of course parking is not easy, but I was able to find street parking around 10:30am after circling a couple times. I made a reservation about a week before for the weekend, and we were seated right away. Fried Maitake - 8/10 This was my favorite dish and would go back to eat this! Matcha Tiramisu - 7/10 I just had to try the matcha tiramisu. Normally I like just straight matcha but I had to try this fun sweet drink, and I enjoyed dipping the lady finger in the drink. For a sweet drink, this matcha was also not sweet!! Just the way I like it!! Shokupan Toast - 7/10 It's hard to find good shokupan toast outside of Japan, and Between Us actually used decent shokupan toast! You can tell by the sweet taste and the texture. Duck and waffle - 6/10 I ordered the duck and waffle because I normally love chicken and waffles so of course I have to try this. It was not for me because I did not like the sauce that they provided and would have preferred a regular sweet sauce like maple syrup for the waffle. The duck was a bit dry in my opinion. Beignets - 7/10 A good standard beignet Steak and Eggs - 6/10 The steak was alright but the dish as a whole was the perfect breakfast plate. The food was good, we got the curry hamburg and the breakfast tartine. The curry in the curry Hamburg dish was super yummy, I think it's homemade? Did not taste like the curry blocks I get from the supermarket haha! The egg was delicious and not dry! The hamburg, however, was super dry and it was undercooked in the center. The breakfast tartine was good, the bread was super soft and pillowy, and the bacon was still pretty tender. The egg was done well like the curry hamburg. However $19 for basically avocado toast...take that with what you will. I ordered the matcha tiramisu and my friend ordered the maple leaf syrup matcha... it's good matcha, well made or whisked since it was not bitter but to pay an extra $3 (total $9 each) for the flavorings is not worth it tbh? I barely tasted any tiramisu or any syrup in our matchas, so def recommend getting just the matcha latte. They ran out of the beignets when we came in, so def recommend coming earlier if you are trying for that. Love the ambiance and the area in north park! The wait was about 30 min to an hour in three day weekend Monday, and it took a bit for our food to arrive. I want to say it was a solid 15-20 minutes for the food to come out! We left the house at 10 and were able to get seated and finished eating at 1 - to put things in perspective. There is only street parking, and north park does fill out fast, however it's a walkable neighborhood so parking a bit far is also okay too! read more
Super adorable brunch spot near Saigon Coffee! All their drinks were so cute and there's a lot of natural light. Staff was super friendly and food came out pretty quick even on peak weekend times! Parking can be difficult. It's worth coming with a reservation and plans to stop by other cafes or small stores in the area. I loved the beignets but I wish they came with more sauce and it was easier to share. Most dishes were super flavorful! The duck waffle was okay, I would skip it next time. The mushroom chazuke, beet & burrata salad, and latke benedicts were great and fun to share. read more

My friend was raving about Between Us (she said it was so good that she and her bf went back twice on the same trip to SD), so I immediately added it to my bookmarks and decided to check it out on our latest trip! Obviously, I also scoped out their Yelp and looked at a bunch of pics and the menu before I went. Looked good but didn't seem like anything too special. Well let me tell you - it was indeed soooo good and def something special. Probably the best meal that we had on our entire trip, and this is including all my local faves like tacos el gordo, lobster west, oscars, dunedin, etc.! First, the drinks - I got a salted maple cream matcha and the bf got a nitro cold brew. I don't remember if I tasted the cold brew, but the matcha was yummy! More comparable to what you would get at a matcha spot than a restaurant or brunch spot. The salted maple cream made it super creamy and slightly sweet (but not too sweet). The bf got the duck and waffle (which was highly recommended by my friend). It was a fun trust on chicken and waffles, and I really liked the passion fruit guava syrup! The standout for me was def the shakshuka. It was unlike any other shakshuka I've had. Now hear me out - the ingredients listed on the menu do look a bit odd (but intriguing imo). Fish of the day, boursin cheese, snap peas, runny egg, and focaccia in a spicy tomatoey sauce. I would have never expected these ingredients to go together so well, but gurllll they worked!! The pairing was amazing. When I had it, the fish of the day was some kind of white fish, which was smooth and tender. Something about the smooth fish, the heat of the tomato sauce, the creaminess of the cheese, and the sweet peas just created the perfect balance. And the focaccia - I'm not normally a huge focaccia person, it's usually just ok to me - this homemade focaccia was heavenly. Slightly crisp on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside, and the perfect vehicle for picking up all the yummy sauce. I was tempted to also go back a second time on our trip, but alas we had too many other spots to check out. But def a must go when we're back in SD! read more
