    Chicken karage
    Gabby A.

Im not really a ramen fan but I still like to try the other food they offer at ramen places. So i got the chicken karage. It's not bad, comes with a mustard sauce and small salad. Nothing special. I will just always get that when I go here. I have tried the ramen before and there are definitely better places to go. But this location is the most convenient to go to. The service is good and fast. They greet you when you walk in and walk out.

Someone once asked me what the deal is with ramen, actually asking "they're just noodles, right?" Good thing we were in a moving vehicle then, otherwise I would have fallen off my chair. But actually, I came late to ramen. As a kid, I grew up seeing noodles with soup as part of Chinese cuisine. I preferred my pancit over wanton soup, also partly because I was always told not to slurp because it was bad manners. I thought to myself, man, this is a hassle to eat. So many rules. So when I discovered ramen years later, I fell in love. It was salty, and garlicky, and really, really flavorful. Plus, the cherry on top: the Japanese actually consider slurping part of the proper way to eat ramen. So hooray! At Ramen Nagi, I got everything I wanted in their Kuroo, or Black King. Lots of garlic, lots of pork, and lots of flavor. It looks like something a witch brew in a pot but it tastes like heaven. An extra point for Ramen Nagi: they serve Kirin, our favorite beer!

I attended the press launch of Ramen Nagi in Robinsons Magnolia. I can't account for an everyday experience, but if their launch was any indication, they're a quite lively bunch who take their ramen seriously. They served us all some Chicken Karaage (good) and Nagi Star Salad (also good). I like how ramen joints let you "create" your own bowl. It being my first time, I went with a classic: Original King (Butao), with extra nori. It was a huuuuge bowl, good enough for two, if you're eating lightly. Which was the case for me; I usually stop when the noodles are gone. I found it so cute that they let a few customers in behind the counter to experience making noodles. They probably don't normally do this, but a great way to get people involved.

Among all the ramen heavy weights in the Metro, Nagi has the richest and boldest broth in terms of flavor and punch. Its a double edged sword. The initial taste is instant infatuation that will make you wanna finish the whole thing in one go. Halfway through, the laws of marginal utility cones to play and you start to ponder if you can go on. But of course you will since you'll still pay for it. I love the fact the "Ramenan" enables you to customize your order based on how you like it. This leaves room for you to tweak until you attain the perfect ramen bowl in final form. I usually go with the Red King since spicy food is my bread and butter. The Black Squid Ink ramen, while delicious, is a bit overpowering a halfway through the bowl. Don't ever get these during dates for obvious reasons (black squid ink, white teeth and any form of clothing is not a good equation to solve). The pork meat that it comes with (shoulder or belly) is so tender and delicious. I'd probably have a good bowl of ramen Nagi once the month of June aka "Ramen weather" kicks in. As if moment, the Manila heat is not to be trifled with!

It doesn't have the international recognition of Ippudo or Santouka or the creativity of Nagi, but the ramen here feels as though someone is treating you for a nice dinner at home. There are only three flavors available of the ramen, the shiro (classic), kuro (garlic), and aka (spicy). I've had both the kuro and aka, and I can say that they are extremely satisfying. Neither the garlic nor the spice was too overpowering. The broth was also extremely well-balanced. Not too fatty but still smooth enough to make you want to slurp the bowl once you've finished. The pork cuts weren't as tender as I've had at other places, but still very well done. The tamago was also well done. Love the runniness! But what puts this place over the edge into 5-star territory is the price. You can get a super filling bowl of ramen here for only 230 pesos! And that's for the larger size! I wager that's basically half of what you'd pay at the more upscale mall places for nearly the same quality. I was also able to try one of their sets featuring a bowl of ramen of your choosing, their gyudon rice don on the side and a bowl of fresh fruits for only 360 pesos. I was stuffed after. So so worth it. The gyoza was also really well made, and a steal for only 100 pesos. The staff here is always super attentive and accommodating, even when we've come in with a larger group, and they do accept all major credit cards, which is a huge plus for me. Definitely worth a try. I don't have to venture out to the more upscale parts of the Metro to enjoy a well-curated bowl of ramen anymore!

High chairs are available for kids and adults and establishment delivers via FoodPanda. BEVERAGE We had hot and cold tea by accident so what we did was consume the cold one during the meal because the ramen was hot. Then I had the warm tea to feel relaxed after getting full. FOOD Signature Happiness Ramen (shoyu tonkotsu broth ramen topped with tender, slow-braised custom cut soft bone pork rib) was umami with a tasty broth, acceptably hard noodles, a very generous serving of tender beef, and a cute strip of seaweed with some Kanji written on it. I'd strongly recommend this dish for the quality of the beef. Teriyaki Beef Tapa Rice Bowl (angus beef slices, homemade teriyaki, garlic, sunny-side up egg, salsa, gari, spiced vinegar on rice) was an interesting approach to combining Japanese and Filipino brunch, and the quality of the beef was, indeed, special but a bit pricey for me. The sweet taste of beef was pleasant but the ramen gave me more value. SERVICE We were informed that the Signature Happiness Ramen "whole" size, Ebi Tempura and free kaedama or noodles weren't included in Zomato Gold. Claiming perks was smooth! Because of the relay of messages, we accidentally received hot and cold tea but we were totally okay with it; can't waste good tea!

If it's your first time, try their famous signature Happiness Ramen. It costs Php 480 a bowl and the serving is big enough for three kids to share. Or two adults. Or one ramen-lover like me. The pork is soft and the broth can be oily but then again that's the point. It's just good. You have the option to add tamago to your bowl (for an additional fee) and I strongly recommend you do that. It's good enough on its own though. They don't have much in their menu but thankfully they have gyoza. I mean how can a ramen place not have gyoza? The two have been married since time immemorial. Okay I'm exagerrating. But really, get some gyoza too. They're really good.

Although that's the case, I still enjoy exploring cheaper ramen places, and I am so annoyed right now because apparently, Hikojyu has been around for a year and a half already, yet I learned about it only 2 weeks ago! Bummer! Anyway, my boyfriend and I are so glad of this discovery! Unlike other ramen restaurants, Hikojyu's ramen choices are limited to just 2 kinds: shoyu and tonkotsu. Naturally, we ordered both! When they were served, I was a bit apprehensive because they didn't look hefty. However, on my first sip of both broths, I knew we have found the best affordable ramen shop in Marikina! They are rich in flavor, minus the umay factor that others have! Of course, given the price, the toppings were understandably limited to a few pieces of pechay, egg halves, and a chashu slice, which could still be made more tender, IMO. If you want your ramen to be spicy, use any of their authentic Japanese condiments. For our sides we tried their gyoza and potato salad. I was never a fan of gyoza save for Ippudo's deep-fried gyoza, and now, I have a second favorite! This one doesn't have the yucky mashed old veggie taste that most gyozas have! But if I had to pick just one side, I'd order their potato salad more often! It's perfectly seasoned! Wish it came in a bigger serving, though! On one corner of the restaurant is a table with magazines, both English and Japanese, plus an album filled with the owners' pictures in Japan. We met one of them, the wife, Tita Tess, and she's really nice and accommodating! Never a dull moment! Her husband is Japanese, so we know that Hikojyu's dishes are authentic! I can't wait to go back and try their rice meals!!!

Mentally bookmarked it and came back another day during off hours (3 pm) - the waiting benches outside were empty. The decor inside is impressive - a huge display of ramen spoons crown the central open kitchen where Chashu is being grilled and bowls of soup noodles are assembled. The order is taken at the register at the front before you are seated. Once seated at the bar, a chef and waiter on either side of the bar are there to help you out. I ordered a delicious Tsukemen, whose broth options were different had I ordered a regular bowl of soup ramen. The tsukemen broths appear to be more seafood forward and worth coming back to try them all. I do recommend getting extra chashu no matter what your order is. For just 315 PHP you get 3 extra pieces of smoky goodness, an outstanding piece of meat that I've never seen at any other ramen joint. Definitely a must-come-back to on my next Manila visit

The location in BGC was quite large with the bar like seating winding all around the kitchen area. Hundreds of soup spoons hung above. Ordering process was the same with the menu posted at the front. Three types of ramen (regular, dipping and soupless) plus side dishes like gyoza and extra char siu. Service was fast at the front and kitchen staff regularly shouted greetings in Japanese when getting seated. Food took a little long to be served as I watched one guy prepping, making the ramen and char siu. Seemed like they were a little understaffed that day. I had ordered my favorite tan tan men with a side of char siu. The broth was creamy and mildly spicy. Ramen was thick and chewy. Char siu was thick, juicy and added more flavors to my tan tan men. Their char siu was quite a generous serving of pork for the price. Beats many other ramen places. Gyozas here were also good. Crisp on the outside and good amount of filling inside. They offered two sizes, 3 or 5 pieces. Besides the slow service this chain still remains my favorite here in Philippines.
