The ramen here isn't very good considering they have 'ramen' in their name. Maybe it's just me, because I have been spoiled by the Tonkotsu and Tantanmen variations. I will recommend the Drunk man rice bowl if you are not going for the ramen. The Kakuni could be less fatty but I liked how the generous amount of chilli on top isn't too hot and how the two eggs are perfectly cooked.

Soy source-pork based soup is quite good, but a large pork lump seems too much for a bowl of ramen. This would be their unique point. Not available of alcohol drinks and gyoza this time.

It doesn't have the international recognition of Ippudo or Santouka or the creativity of Nagi, but the ramen here feels as though someone is treating you for a nice dinner at home. There are only three flavors available of the ramen, the shiro (classic), kuro (garlic), and aka (spicy). I've had both the kuro and aka, and I can say that they are extremely satisfying. Neither the garlic nor the spice was too overpowering. The broth was also extremely well-balanced. Not too fatty but still smooth enough to make you want to slurp the bowl once you've finished. The pork cuts weren't as tender as I've had at other places, but still very well done. The tamago was also well done. Love the runniness! But what puts this place over the edge into 5-star territory is the price. You can get a super filling bowl of ramen here for only 230 pesos! And that's for the larger size! I wager that's basically half of what you'd pay at the more upscale mall places for nearly the same quality. I was also able to try one of their sets featuring a bowl of ramen of your choosing, their gyudon rice don on the side and a bowl of fresh fruits for only 360 pesos. I was stuffed after. So so worth it. The gyoza was also really well made, and a steal for only 100 pesos. The staff here is always super attentive and accommodating, even when we've come in with a larger group, and they do accept all major credit cards, which is a huge plus for me. Definitely worth a try. I don't have to venture out to the more upscale parts of the Metro to enjoy a well-curated bowl of ramen anymore!

So no taking home leftovers but you can do frozen ramen take out where they also have instructions on how to make it. We had the tantanmen ramen with extra charsiu and egg and it was phenomenal. No wonder they don't have you take it home. We also ordered gyoza which was a little too oily for me and also their Japanese fried rice and chicken karaage now the chicken was great but the rice was passable at best. The rice tasted like they old rice which would be perfect for your usual fried rice as that's what I use but this was too brittle. I paired the chicken with an Asahi beer which hit the spot perfectly. All in all I would say reserve seats first so you don't have to wait long. They make you order and pay ahead of time before eating which is worth noting. Oh and there don't have a lot of seating capability.

Mentally bookmarked it and came back another day during off hours (3 pm) - the waiting benches outside were empty. The decor inside is impressive - a huge display of ramen spoons crown the central open kitchen where Chashu is being grilled and bowls of soup noodles are assembled. The order is taken at the register at the front before you are seated. Once seated at the bar, a chef and waiter on either side of the bar are there to help you out. I ordered a delicious Tsukemen, whose broth options were different had I ordered a regular bowl of soup ramen. The tsukemen broths appear to be more seafood forward and worth coming back to try them all. I do recommend getting extra chashu no matter what your order is. For just 315 PHP you get 3 extra pieces of smoky goodness, an outstanding piece of meat that I've never seen at any other ramen joint. Definitely a must-come-back to on my next Manila visit

The location in BGC was quite large with the bar like seating winding all around the kitchen area. Hundreds of soup spoons hung above. Ordering process was the same with the menu posted at the front. Three types of ramen (regular, dipping and soupless) plus side dishes like gyoza and extra char siu. Service was fast at the front and kitchen staff regularly shouted greetings in Japanese when getting seated. Food took a little long to be served as I watched one guy prepping, making the ramen and char siu. Seemed like they were a little understaffed that day. I had ordered my favorite tan tan men with a side of char siu. The broth was creamy and mildly spicy. Ramen was thick and chewy. Char siu was thick, juicy and added more flavors to my tan tan men. Their char siu was quite a generous serving of pork for the price. Beats many other ramen places. Gyozas here were also good. Crisp on the outside and good amount of filling inside. They offered two sizes, 3 or 5 pieces. Besides the slow service this chain still remains my favorite here in Philippines.

Although that's the case, I still enjoy exploring cheaper ramen places, and I am so annoyed right now because apparently, Hikojyu has been around for a year and a half already, yet I learned about it only 2 weeks ago! Bummer! Anyway, my boyfriend and I are so glad of this discovery! Unlike other ramen restaurants, Hikojyu's ramen choices are limited to just 2 kinds: shoyu and tonkotsu. Naturally, we ordered both! When they were served, I was a bit apprehensive because they didn't look hefty. However, on my first sip of both broths, I knew we have found the best affordable ramen shop in Marikina! They are rich in flavor, minus the umay factor that others have! Of course, given the price, the toppings were understandably limited to a few pieces of pechay, egg halves, and a chashu slice, which could still be made more tender, IMO. If you want your ramen to be spicy, use any of their authentic Japanese condiments. For our sides we tried their gyoza and potato salad. I was never a fan of gyoza save for Ippudo's deep-fried gyoza, and now, I have a second favorite! This one doesn't have the yucky mashed old veggie taste that most gyozas have! But if I had to pick just one side, I'd order their potato salad more often! It's perfectly seasoned! Wish it came in a bigger serving, though! On one corner of the restaurant is a table with magazines, both English and Japanese, plus an album filled with the owners' pictures in Japan. We met one of them, the wife, Tita Tess, and she's really nice and accommodating! Never a dull moment! Her husband is Japanese, so we know that Hikojyu's dishes are authentic! I can't wait to go back and try their rice meals!!!

I'm saying that most of the restaurants nowadays would always give you the you-get-what-you-pay-for kind of quality or worse, they put up a high mark off price on the food or services they provide. I was kinda surprised when I looked at the menu of Ramen Cool because they charge waaaaaay cheaper than your regular ramen joints in the Philippines. Not only that, I'm surprised that the quality of ramen they provide is in line with the big Japanese chains that proliferate around the metro. Apart from their pork ramen, I also fell in love with Ramen Cool's matcha drink. When I got there, I only spent around less than 300 and with other Japanese restos, that's already a great deal. They also provide great service on top of their high quality food.

Situated at the corner of East and West Capitol Drive, it is conveniently in the middle of the bustling food neighborhood that is Kapitolyo. My perfect start to cooling-off would be with their seared tuna salad - a colorful bowl of vegetables and greens, with thick slices of seared sesame and chili powder-coated tuna. Then I follow it with a bowl of their hiyashichuka - a cold, refreshing bowl of ramen served with slices of tamago, kani and cucumber. Best to push all of that down with either cold Japanese green tea or a tall glass of their Milo dinosaur. On days when I want a light snack, I head over to Ramen Cool and have their gyoza. Given the serving sizes, the good taste, and the restaurant's nice ambience and modern, funky interiors, it's always money well spent.
