My dad's relatives are somewhat aware, so they suggested we go here for lunch. I was bummed because of the lack of local eateries we've been to so far (which will be a recurring pattern for the rest of our time here). And Ippudo already has locations back in the States. But I was still interested in going since I didn't get the opportunity to go during my Japan trip last year. You will find the restaurant on the second floor of Greenbelt 5, a shopping mall in Makati. Next to Chili's, which I'm sure is a familiar name for everyone. There was a bit of a wait since it was busy. Seating was tight because our part of six was smushed into a booth that should probably only accommodate four. A bowl of ramen is about $8-12 USD, on the higher end locally (the average office worker in Manila makes less than $10 an hour). I tried their limited edition (available until April 30) Yakiniku Ramen. The pork bone broth was lukewarm, but the consistency of the Hakata style noodles were great and the soft boiled egg was perfect. If it's your first time, try their famous signature Happiness Ramen. It costs Php 480 a bowl and the serving is big enough for three kids to share. Or two adults. Or one ramen-lover like me. The pork is soft and the broth can be oily but then again that's the point. It's just good. You have the option to add tamago to your bowl (for an additional fee) and I strongly recommend you do that. It's good enough on its own though. They don't have much in their menu but thankfully they have gyoza. I mean how can a ramen place not have gyoza? The two have been married since time immemorial. Okay I'm exagerrating. But really, get some gyoza too. They're really good.

I was probably expecting a lot as I didn't feel like I was very satisfied and happy with the ramen I got. Everyone else seem to like what they got, my kids included. But they did say they had better. Service was good and staff was friendly. Ambiance and decor was also great. Love their Japanese themed decor and the chairs with baskets to hold your personal items and bags or purses. I would liken this type of restaurant to Chipotle, where you can customize your order. Ramen Nagi is the fast casual version for Ramen. We were greeted with the enthusiastic Irasshaimase by the servers as we stepped inside. The restaurant had Japanese decor all around, with tables, chairs and benches for larger dining groups. Phia helped me customize my order based on my preference, which each one wrote on their own order sheets and later on collected by our server. Our sever delivered drinks and after a short wait, everyone's piping hot ramen. After my first sip of the broth, I could immediately tell these guys have something special going on. The rich broth was meaty, with a creamy texture. It was very tasty! Everyone in my group enjoyed their ramen-- including me as only remnants of the broth remained in my bowl after I was done... yes, we have a ramen convert here. If I had one quibble, it would be that the restaurant temp was on the warm side, which made some of us (not gonna name names Raphael) sweat profusely. However, if it were any cooler, the ramen would cool down pretty quickly. Although Ramen Nagi would be at a different segment and lower price point than Ippudo, I would have to say that I enjoyed my experience in Ramen Nagi QC, Philippines much more than dining at Ippudo in NY. Situated at the corner of East and West Capitol Drive, it is conveniently in the middle of the bustling food neighborhood that is Kapitolyo. My perfect start to cooling-off would be with their seared tuna salad - a colorful bowl of vegetables and greens, with thick slices of seared sesame and chili powder-coated tuna. Then I follow it with a bowl of their hiyashichuka - a cold, refreshing bowl of ramen served with slices of tamago, kani and cucumber. Best to push all of that down with either cold Japanese green tea or a tall glass of their Milo dinosaur. On days when I want a light snack, I head over to Ramen Cool and have their gyoza. Given the serving sizes, the good taste, and the restaurant's nice ambience and modern, funky interiors, it's always money well spent.

I was kinda surprised when I looked at the menu of Ramen Cool because they charge waaaaaay cheaper than your regular ramen joints in the Philippines. Not only that, I'm surprised that the quality of ramen they provide is in line with the big Japanese chains that proliferate around the metro. Apart from their pork ramen, I also fell in love with Ramen Cool's matcha drink. When I got there, I only spent around less than 300 and with other Japanese restos, that's already a great deal. I can now say I've dined at Ippudo NYC and Ippudo Philippines and the quality is truly the same with the Ippudo name. It would be dangerous if I lived in Manila because the bowl is so much cheaper than its NYC counterpart, I'd probably eat here every day. The flavors, spices, TLC put into every bowl is so evident and the noodles are just so perfect I get a 2nd serving every time! Whenever you ask me and whereever you ask me what my favorite ramen bowl is, I will always say Ippudo until further notice.

The taste of all components in ramen are slightly lower than the average, but balance and combination of all is below average ramen we could eat in Manila. Gyoza also is lower than the average level. Maybe their noodle is only for tsukemen dipping noodle like Mitsuyado seimen.
