I am a fan of Japanese food that, when balikbayan relatives ask me where we can eat in the city, I, more often than not, refer them to a Japanese place or, at least, include it as one of the options. You may think that Japanese restaurants need to thank me for that. But, I say: Japanese restaurants and food joints, thank Kitaro.
Kitaro started my love for Japanese food with their very enticing and delicious mixed sashimi special platter. Tuna, salmon, egg, sea urchin, crab, shrimp and eel. Oh, so yummy. And, may I add, Kitaro is also where I learned to like wasabi. The first time I tasted wasabi, I almost cried, because the spice ran all over my nose and up to my head. But, not to be put down easily, I gave it another try. Then, I realized how nicely it blended with the sashimi that it got to a point where a meal at Kitaro would never be complete without mixed sashimi special platter and eating wasabi-flavored food became almost an addiction.
But, Kitaro is not limited to sashimi. I soon discovered Sakana-Furai, Kani Salad, and Beef Yakiniku - the three other dishes I frequently order at Kitaro. Eventually, this love for Kitaro extended and became a love for Japanese food in general. For introducing me to Japanese cuisine, I thank Kitaro! read more
