A friend recommended this restaurant and the food looked amazing! My boyfriend and I are always down for Japanese food. We decided to have our anniversary date night here and booked a reservation on OpenTable on our first night in BC.
It's located next to Market Meats Kitsilano and Shoppers Drug Mart on W 4th Ave in Kisilano. There's only street parking around the area on the smaller streets perpendicular from the main road from what I've seen.
Originally, I wanted to order off their menu but when we arrived, I noticed their course menus that was given to us as we seated. The Kaiseki Course for $146 or the Omakase Uni Zukushi course for $156. Both served enough for two people which I was very skeptical because for that price, there's usually not enough food... but the choices of food looked tempting (peep at pics). HMM. My boyfriend and I decided to do it! We chose the Kaiseki Course for 2 people as we're unfortunately not big uni eaters (sad). And I was SOOO GLAD we chose the Kaiseki course meal and didn't add anything else as there was a TON ton ton of food! The portions for everything was HUGE and soooo delicious. Absolutely in shocked! The hospitality from the staff also made our experience 2x better. Thank you for such an amazing night!
The Kaiseki Course was basically a 6-course meal that allowed us to choose what we wanted.
1: An aperitif with a choice of sake or non-alcoholic drink (obv chose the sake of chef's choice which was good!) and Scallop Shooter! YUM! That was delicious. I was thrown off by the jelly but wow! Something I didn't expect. The presentation of it was beautiful too!
2: Choice of one of two salads. We chose the AAA Steak and Mushroom Salad. Omg, another yum! The steak was well seasoned and beautifully cooked medium rare. The dressing the had added acidity which mixed sooo nicely with the entire salad. The salad itself was already a meal for one person because of it's huge portion!
3: Choice of two appetizers out of four. We chose the Chef's choice of sashimi which was Albacore tuna, Atlantic Salmon, and Otoro (super fatty bluefin tuna) and Kakuni braised Pork Belly. Another WOW. The sashimi were all really fresh! I didn't expect the albacore to be really good and fatty as my first experience was albacore was REALLY fishy. I had to ask the servers what that fish was as I didn't catch the name of the fish twice (and because I was in disbelief that it was albacore LOL). And the otoro, super fatty and melted in my mouth YUUUM. The pork belly came with a mashed potato and a hard boiled egg cut into halves and the flavor of both the meat and potato was ah-maazing! Not overly salty and the meat was super tender.
4: Otoro Aburi Sushi with the option to add foie gras & wagyu nigiri and/or chawanmushi for an additional cost. We didn't opt in for the extras. The otoro aburi sushi was NOT what we expected. It was a line of cooked otoro with different toppings. What originality! Never seen this kind of sushi before and definitely left a lasting impression on both me and my boyfriend! Even though the main protein was the otoro aburi, the flavors of each bite was so different from the previous bite. Crazy!
5: Choice of carbs. We chose the Lobster Uni Cream Udon. HUUUUGE BOWL! As big as BOTH my hands together (if not bigger; peep at pic). The dish smelled amazing! But I thought the udon was kind of bitter and didn't have much of a bite to it. Probably because of the juices from the lobster. But the lobster was soooo good! The lobster was actually what caught my eyes LOL.
6: Digestif of hot green tea and Chef's choice of dessert which was two green tea cheesecake with a fluffy cream and fruits and pistachios. Presentation again, A+. The cheesecakes did blend in with the plate but the fruits gave it color. In addition to these, we were also given an anniversary dessert of Almond Tofu Parfait. So nice of them! Didn't have much almond flavor that I was used to in a Chinese dessert but overall, really good! It was my boyfriend's first time trying this kind of dessert and he enjoyed it!
When they gave us the almond tofu, the staff all came together to say 'happy anniversary' to us and also took a polaroid picture of us! They gave us the picture at the end of our dinner, and I AM IN LOVE WITH IT!
The food, service, and ambiance of this restaurant was SPECTACULAR. I LOVED everything we had and would definitely say this restaurant is now one of my top 3 Japanese restaurants with really decent prices that wasn't considered "high-end" that I've been to. If I'm ever craving Japanese, I definitely will be back. Would love to try their Sha-Ka-Do Bento! read more
