I can't help it that I know how to work it.
Other women, especially statuesque ladies like me, love to accost me at the Farmer's Market, or the book store, or the craft fair, to let me know how fine I look--seriously. They ask me where I find such cute clothes, 'in our size' they whisper. Until now, I have only shared my fashion secret with those amazonian sisters who basically were breaths away from asking me for my autograph.
As a full figured gal, it can be difficult to find fun/current/young clothes for the size 14 plus crowd. I found Rainbow a couple of years ago after another discount clothing store closed their doors in the same shopping plaza (near the YMCA on North Lamar.)
I have no fear when it comes to clothes shopping. I love stores like 'one price clothing'---the more...uh, how should I put it? Well--urban and inexpensive the shopping experience can be, the better. I have even been known to buy dresses at Fiesta. I just don't care about provenance. One cannot look as good as me and stay on the beaten path!
So let me just give you an idea of some of the fun things I've found at Rainbow:
-mustard colored clutch with 80's bow
-sweater tunic in eggplant
-turquoise faux croc notebook clutch
-graphic tees of many distinctions
-red kimono blouse
-Brazilian, padded flip flops
-cute brown undies with cream polka dots for my big booty
-purple framed risky business sunglasses
-silver corset belt
-wrap dress in folk pattern
-cream sundress with turquoise and orange edging
Basically, I find stuff at Rainbow that looks like it comes from a boutique, and each item usually costs between $5 and $20. Don't go to Rainbow looking for great quality. While many pieces I've found there have lasted several seasons, at Rainbow and in life, you generally get what you pay for. Think of Rainbow as like H&M with a Mary J Blige soundtrack.
As a word of caution, don't go to Rainbow if you don't have 'vision' for your sense of fashion. That is, you need to look beyond the t-shirts that say 'baby girl' and the foil embossed velour pants with sayings across the behind. There is both good and bad at Rainbow, so if you don't know what is good on you...you might be lost at this shop.
Finally, to have a successful trip to Rainbow, you need to check any sense of class-ism or racism at the door. This is a store where you can exchange "oh girl that looks good on you's" with women from all different colors and backgrounds--Rainbow is a fitting name on many levels.
There are tons of cute, inexpensive (season specific) clothes for junior and ladies sizes too. read more
