Up some sketchy stairs behind an asian supermarket, you will find a literal hole in the wall. The lady working there walking around is the boss. She is a hustler, just tell her what you want and she'll hook you up. We got a $40 catfish and it was just the right amount for 2 people. If u get more people you can get the bigger ones and different dishes to share. I love this diy type stuff, the catfish was crispy and delicious and I loved all the toppings and the rolling. It's more of a group effort but fun nonetheless.
This is a great place to bring people who haven't experienced Vietnamese food before. It's like a speakeasy where it's kind of an adventure to find it and it's not easy an obstacle free path. I don't know if the health department just doesn't like stairs, but everything's messy, sticky and in disrepair on this upper floor of the Saigon supermarket. I've been to Vietnam four times and this place seems most like Vietnam. Almost no signs or menus are in English. Some people will not want to eat at here because it's so sketchy, but eat anyway. Just like Vietnam, the dish put in front of you is clean, safe and delicious even if the surroundings don't make it seem that way. I had the banh khot which are hard to explain. They are mini savory pancakes topped with shrimp (with shell), onion and coconut cream. I had it in Nha Trang where it was invented. These were good just slightly too sweet. You wrap one of these in lettuce with herbs and dip it in the sauce. Delicious! The other dish was fish cake soup with rice noodles. The broth was clean and flavorful. Ate every drop. This place proves that people make the hike up here stepping over trash and around Christmas items in July to get here just to get to the delicious Vietnamese food. Affordable too!
We were driving back north from San Diego while my friend was searching for something to eat. He quickly found five or so restaurants for us to choose from, everything sounded great since we essentially skipped lunch to go hiking. Ultimately, the Yelp review from friend Amy L swung the vote (many thanks!). The three of us arrived right as the sun started setting, so walking from the parking lot to the rear of the building and up the stairs felt rather sketchy. To be fair though, there were plenty of cars parked back there with what seems to be apartments on the opposite side. Speaking in Vietnamese, my friend ordered Cá Nướng, roasted catfish. While we initially wanted to order a small, the lady told us that they had ran out so gave us a medium for $5 more. In addition, we also ordered a plate of Bò Nướng Lá Lốt, grilled beef with guised leaves. Finally, we had wanted to order the Bún Đậu Mắm Tôm, the fried tofu pork with vermicelli, but the shrimp paste guy had left for the day. Their attentiveness was exceptional, and the food came out quick. Turns out the medium sized fish was perfect for three people. Amazingly flavorful with the pineapple and tamarind dipping sauces, we devoured everything and had little left over. The beef was also deliciously succulent, and the soup was a perfect complement. Right next to the restaurant was a bakery selling pork floss cake which proved not too sweet and delicately creamy. All in all, a very satisfying meal.
I have a feeling this might turn into an annual tradition where I update my review of Quan Ca SaiGon. Honestly, this place never fails! It's still my go-to spot for catfish spring rolls. I appreciate how easy it is to order over the phone, pick up, and enjoy a delicious meal at home. The catfish is always perfectly prepared, the sauces are consistently amazing, and the price is spot-on. I always order the Small Catfish ($30), which comes with all the fixings to make your spring rolls. In my opinion, the small size is enough for 2-4 people, though if you're especially hungry, it might be more like 2-3. For those who haven't been, you can access Quan Ca SaiGon directly by driving to the back of the Saigon Supermarket parking lot. You'll spot a staircase outside (see photo) that leads you straight to the restaurant, so you don't have to navigate through the supermarket.
Ordered takeout from Quan Ca Saigon in Garden Grove and went with the XL fried catfish. Everything traveled really well and was still fresh and delicious when we ate it at home. The catfish was crispy on the outside and tender inside. They included everything needed to make your own spring rolls at home. Rice paper, fresh veggies and herbs, and a variety of sauces were all packed separately and thoughtfully. It was fun putting everything together ourselves, and the flavors were excellent. The portion was huge and easy to share. The lady that brought out the food was so nice and welcoming! The restaurant is tucked behind a market, so it's a little tricky to find, but it's well worth it. Even as takeout, the quality held up. 100 percent recommend.
Super dry and bitter taste. Fish look like she have deep fry it for over 10 times before she serve it taste very old, dry and bitter. Used to be good, but I will not come back anymore. Service was lack and auto charge 10% for service fee. When I confront her about it, she said the owner told her to add it in each bill.
Support your small local businesses!! Got the Medium baked catfish for $40. Such a steal, most other restaurants sell this fish for $60-70. I called ahead so they had enough time to prepare. The catfish was pretty big (despite the bad camera angle in the pic), feeds 3-4 people. Owner is an older Vietnamese lady, super sweet and kind, speaks primarily Vietnamese only. Make sure you bring cash because they charge extra with card!!
Was craving grilled crispy catch fish fish and found this place. This is not a stand alone restaurant but set up sad a part of the food court. Tuck in the far right corner above a supermarket. Signs are everywhere to lead you to the place. Once you're there, the. The enjoyment begins. The main dish is the grilled and very crispy fish. Order the approximate size for your party. The squid mango salad was good. They charge for all additional condiments even with the dipping sauce. The main dish came out quite fast but be prepared to wait for your drinks and other dishes. All over all are good.
Recently came here for the Ca Nuong and it was really bad. There's no A/C so it was really hot inside. Service was non existent, no menu was given, and wasn't asked if we wanted water for maybe 5-10 minutes after we sat down. We asked for a few extra things and didn't get it for over 10 minutes. We had to ask multiple times. Few customers came in and sat down and ended up leaving because there was no service. As for the food, the fish meat was really mushy and didn't taste fresh.

Since we were both unaware of how to navigate and get to the restaurant, he went through the long way and told me he was almost creeped out by the entire walk because there were just empty shops and not much else going on the building. My friend sent me an Instagram video after the matter and we saw that there is a back secret entrance that leads you straight to the restaurant. Wow. What an experience for my bf. He thought I was sending him off to die. Haha. Anyway, back to the food.. everything was so good and well cooked/crispy! This was the perfect amount to feed 6 people (one person didn't eat much though) and with no leftovers. Pro tip: take this to go and make more vermicelli/buy more spring roll wrap at home. Veggies and sauces were plentiful (more than enough) and it's just such an enjoyable experience to eat with everyone! I would definitely come back again and introduce this place to other people.
It's a mom & pop shop restaurant with one lady running the cashier and serving. She is the sweetest lady and though we had a language barrier, she did her best to check in on us, make sure the food was okay and served us quickly! It's a grungy, unsuspecting place but it's a small business that deserves more recognition! The food was great, price was amazing and service was excellent! Please support!
Was brought here by my "shrimp" to try the fish after I requested something "fish" for my birthday. Don't think I've ever had catfish~or if I have, it likely wasn't good because I can't remember it. Place is located upstairs in the back of a strip mall....would never have found this place on my own....the location is as sketch as can be...you go up these stairs on the side of a building and when you enter you'll find a couple mom and pop shops operating together. Its almost like a caring village--everyone helps eachother. Loved it. Anyway, we ordered a medium sized catfish for two and some banh khots. I've never had them but supposedly these are more coconut-y. They were piping hot and fresh when they came out. Perfect on a bed of lettuce dipped in sauce. The catfish was perfectly soft and moist. We rolled them into the rice papers along with all the veggies and condiments and dipped them into either some sort of fish sauce or tamarind sauce. During the meal I found out I suck at rolling rice paper rolls...but I was able to make a few on my own thankfully. Ended up with half the fish remaining because we were so full...either way, really had fun because its such a unique experience. Would totally come back again. read more

I bought a delicious grilled fish to go, the fish was crispy, and the dipping sauces were truly tasty. It was enough for my family of three and cost only 40USD; although I had to go upstairs to get it, the trade-off was a meal that was both affordable and delicious for the whole family. read more

Hear me out - worth the adventure for good baked fish spring rolls at very reasonable price. AND USE THE REAR ENTRANCE. First time trying this place and ordered for pickup. Never knew second floor existed above the supermarket. Finding this place was a mission - entrance is the stairs from the supermarket, walk down 2nd floor pathway with open view of supermarket, don't let the chained closed vacant shops with newspaper windows scare you, turn left at the end to see another straight shot pathway with now what seems to be rows of restaurants, two large buckets catching the leaking ceilings, and at the end is where you find the final boss - Auntie Quan Ca. She's busy but still accommodates to her best as what looks like 1-2 WHOAman operation. She then shares there's a shorter entrance to the side and after two flights of stairs is the BACK OF THE SUPERMAKET. Food was prepared nicely and tasted delicious. So if you never been before it's in the Saigon market and go upstairs because that where it is. There are a lot of signs if you don't go through the main entrance but if you do go to the main one just as a worker if you are lost and they will tell you where to go. Once I walked for like 2 mins up the stairs and kept walking finally found it. I called an hour before hand and they still weren't ready with my fish so I would call an hour and a half ahead from the time you want to pick it up. The lady was working alone and she was quite busy handling customers that were dining in. I was the only one picking up. I had to wait 15 mins there until she packaged it and took payment and then I was on my way home. When I ate it at home it was not warm as I wanted it to be which was okay because the lettuce, rice paper, white noodles and sauces made up for it being not warm. It was so good and I would definitely consider going to purchase from them again if I don't find another place I like. read more
The business a few doors down from the bakery closed down and sold her shop to a pho, noodles, and dim sum place. This was our must stop for bun mam when we are in OC. I'm so sad. If anyone knows of a bun mam place that has good broth that's not fishy or too sweet and a good amount of crispy pork belly, LMK. Dim sum wasn't that great. Tasted a little on the sour end like it's about to go bad. The homemade soy sauce and chili oil were both very delicious. We used that in our catfish rolls. read more

avoid at all costs on a holiday! Placed an order of 2 $50 ca nuong a few days in advance at 4pm pick up. Good thing I arrived 40 mins prior cause they were so short staffed and when I told them I'm here to pick up they said okay right away just hold on. Didn't even ask for my name or what I even ordered. Just be patient. Your food will eventually come. I was able to leave at 415pm with my cat fish but some were waiting over an hour. Mine was just short of an hour even though we all called in and ordered ahead of time. However, when it isn't a holiday and slow they are able to actually give you decent service and in a timely manner. Catfish is great but with how unorganized it is. I rather go somewhere else if I need them at a certain time but if you have all the time in the world, yes check them out. SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESSES! read more

I saw many good reviews about this place so I decided to give it a try. Last Saturday I went there around 5PM and ordered a medium size baked catfish ($40) to go and less than 5 minutes later my order was ready. I asked the lady (owner?) why it was so fast and she said Saturday was a busy day so they had baked the fish in advance and she picked the best one for me. I went home and immediately started my dinner. What I found was that the fish was so dry, the meat on both sides of the head was hard and not edible. The whole fish looked like it was deep fried not baked. The meat inside the fish was dry and tough like jerky. I couldn't believe they sold me this horrendous fish. So much for the "best" fish. I have been going to Nam Giao which is just a few steps around the corner for years and was never disappointed, their baked fish were 100x better. I should have just gone there instead of this horrible place. This was the first time and the last time for me with Quan Ca Saigon. Save your money and go somewhere else. read more
So it was really confusing to get into this restaurant but we went through the back door way since we didn't know the main entrance is through the super market but the super market closed at 7:00pm. It looks very sketchy to go through the back stairs LOL! The atmosphere is not much and there's a lot of fans going on because it's extremely hot in here! Hotter than outside and no air conditioning... But the nice little mom and pop was helping us and recommended the bun vit and Banh hoi dish and they were both AMAZING so all the sketchy stairs and hotness is forgiven. I will be back to try their famous ca nuon !! read more
This has the worst sanitary ever. They won't sell a $30 fish to us because there are four of us. The fish tastes so smelly and not fragrant. The whole restaurant is so horrible The drinks are expensive and they are bland and the water is dirty. I will never come back Banh cong was also so fishy too. It was my first time ordering for pickup at this location after families and friends tried the catfish here and liked it. I also read other reviews about their catfish from this place. This is what I think: First of, the place was hard to find. I was a bit lost in the parking lot and had to call my dad to figure out where. They are located in the back of this plaza, where the supermarket is. It's in the corner all the way in the back where it is pretty shady and scary feeling at night. You walk up the stairs (there might be more than one stairway up but the one I found was the "front" of the super market). When you get up, it is like a maze. The only way to go once you're up there is to the right and you keep going all the way to the other side of the supermarket on the second floor. This place is at the other end upstairs, near the elevator, which I think there might be two elevators lol! Second, the catfish. I called to order it for pick up Wed at 5pm, TG eve. Lady on phone was nice and quick, Vietnamese mostly. I ordered the $50 size. When I came to pick up, a lady only asked which size I ordered to pick up and I said the $50 size. Another lady came out to tell me she'll get it for me. She brought the fish out after a while, maybe 5 mins, and showed me the fish. It was pretty big, fed 4 of us and we still had leftovers. They already pre-packages rice papers, 3 kinds of dipping sauce, veggies, and vermicelli. They accept cash, credit card, and EBT. The quality of the fish was not bad, it was good and the dipping sauce were good. BUT, like some reviewers said, I think they deep fried their catfish here, or at some point of their cooking they fell fried it then baked it or something, because it was super oily!!! I haven't had "baked" catfish this oily before. Overall it was AOK, taste was fine and I got full pretty quickly. I'm still torn because I'm not sure if I really like this place. But the pick up and ordering was smooth and I didn't have to wait long for pick up. And the ladies were so nice! I prob still order from here if I crave catfish for a gathering.... read more
We were influenced by TikTok and saw this catfish place that was in a hidden food court that was upstairs of a supermarket. At first, we didn't know if we were at the right place, but...we went up the stair, around the corner, and down a hall to their stall. It definitely looks like an old-school food stall. We quickly sat down and order a medium size catfish that could easily feed 3-4 people for $40. the catfish wasn't too oily and tasted pretty fresh. We love their sauces that we dipped our catfish spring rolls. I wish they had more green onion and jalapeño on their baked catfish. I think next time we will definitely get it to go instead of eating it there. Definitely check them out if you like catfish. read more

The definition of hole in the wall restaurant! Probably my all-time favorite place to get Ca Nuong (Vietnamese Grilled Fish). If you have never tried ca nuong before, please do yourself a favor and have this be your sign to go. Such a simple yet unique dish! Typically, you start off by ordering the size of your fish, which varies by pricing. I recommend the $45 fish; it can most-definitely feed around 4 people. It comes with lots of veggies to your heart's desires, rice paper with water to soften it, dipping sauces, and noodles to add into the rolls. The fish comes out as whole, and you will have to cut into it yourself. It is flakey, soft, and buttery! Something that I promise is a must-try once in your life. A perfect roll for me is the rice paper on the bottom, lettuce next, the fish with bits & pieces of the crunchy skin, cucumber - dipped in fish sauce. I am drooling with my tummy growling, just thinking about it at the moment. PSA: If you are allergic to nuts, this is a nut-filled dish! I recommend asking for no nuts or nuts on the side for the other people in your party! For the service, there are nice Vietnamese ladies that will accommodate to your needs and wants. They are pretty straight forward and will help you order exactly what you want. Ambiance of the place is pretty quiet; since it is more of a low-key spot, I wouldn't compare it to a normal restaurant. Most-likely, you may be the only one there eating the entirety of your visit or have one/two parties there with you if they know the secret gems of Orange County. read more
